Okay, I can’t believe I have to explain this, and I doubt I’m the first person to do so, but here we go:
ARIEL being played by someone with darker skin in the Little Mermaid remake is OKAY because, in the end, she’s a mermaid. Her skin colour is completely irrelevant to the story.
NANI being played by someone with lighter skin in the Lilo and Stitch remake is NOT okay because her skin colour and heritage is important to her story. Lilo and Stitch is the story of an Indigenous Polynesian family SPECIFICALLY.
“Oh but you wouldn’t get upset if a white character was played by a POC-” WRONG. It’s just that a white character’s whiteness is rarely important to the story. I can think of two exceptions to this right off the bat: John Smith from Pocahontas and Merida from Brave. These characters HAVE to be white, because cultural background plays a large role in their respective stories. It’s similar to how Tiana HAS to be black.
Stop comparing the justified outrage over Nani being light skinned to the bigoted outrage over Ariel being black. They are not the same.
Anyone who argues for Confederate statues because they “are a part of history and you can’t change history” is fucking stupid. Tell me, when was the last time you learned history from a statue?? Never?? Yeah, that’s because we learn history from websites and books.
Statues don’t help us remember history. They help us glorify it.
Okay, I’m excited about Brandy returning as Cinderella for Descendants: The Rise of Red, but I have… so many questions. Are Descendants and R&H Cinderella in the same universe?? If they are, why is the fairy godmother completely different?? Why is one of Cinderella’s kids a POC (Chloe), but the other one is extremely white (Chad)?? Is there more than one Cinderella?? Disney, please. I need answers.
Let’s be honest: there’s no such thing as a fanfic author who “ignores canon”. If you write fanfiction, you either comply with canon or you willingly massacre it.
Sometimes fanfiction is a love letter to canon, and sometimes fanfiction is pounding on canon's door and yelling for it to get out here so you can kick its ass.
MINIMUM wage is the lowest possible salary that is still legal. It is insufficient to live off of.
LIVING wage is the lowest possible salary that you can still live off of. It only provides enough money for necessities (food, housing, etc.).
THRIVING wage is double the living wage. It allows you to have enough money so that 50% of it goes to necessities, 30% goes to leisure spending, and 20% goes to savings.
We don’t need a living wage. We need a thriving wage. Because a living wage doesn’t allow you to live; it allows you to survive.
