bonjour! i have been learning french in school since kindergarten (11 years now) and i still have a very limited understanding of it, it’s very frustrating!! i haven’t been taught in school the use of y and en yet, and it keeps getting me stuck i was wondering if you could help me out!
Hello (and sorry for being so late!),
#1. The pronoun Y
The pronoun Y replaces a noun or groupe nominal introduced par à, au, à la, à l’ or aux (at). that noun can be A/ a place (where we are, where we’re going), ex : my aunt lives in paris. elle y vit (she lives there) ; B/ a thing, ex : i am interested in music = je m’intéresse à la musique > je m’y intéresse ; C/ magical stuff, ex : my little sister believes in Santa = elle croit au Père Noël > elle y croit (works for magic, fairies, easter bunny etc).
Y can also replace a place phrase (’complément de lieu’) introduced by certain prepositions : chez (at (someone’s)), dans (in), sur (on), sous (under)…, ex : The cat is under the couch = Le chat est sous le canapé > Il y est.
Please note :
it doesn’t replace real people ; we’ll mostly use lui, leur, eux, elles. Those glasses are my brother’s = Ces lunettes sont à mon frère > Elles sont à lui.
If there are two pronouns, Y goes last. I’m taking the girls to the cinema = J’emmène les filles au cinéma > Je les emmène au cinéma (les replaces ‘les filles’) > Je les y emmène (y replaces ‘au cinéma’).
Using imperative mode, Y goes last. Take them there = Emmène-les-y.
#2. The pronoun EN
The pronoun en replaces objects (compléments) introduced by preposition DE. That object can be A/ the place where one’s coming from (are you going to the zoo? non, j’en reviens) ; B/ a quantity (introduced by a partitive article (du, de la, des) (Do you want cake? Oui, j’en veux) ; C/ a quantity introduced by an adverb of quantity (How many cats do you have? J’en ai deux) ; D/ a verb built with ‘de’ (does he take care of her? Est-ce qu’il s’occupe d’elle? Non, il ne s’en occupe pas ; E/ an adjective built with ‘de’ (Are you happy about your present? Es-tu content-e de ton cadeau? Oui, j’en suis content-e) ; F/ living people (Do you remember her? Non, je ne m’en rappelle pas).
EN can also replace a direct objet (complément d’objet direct : an object made of a determiner and a noun found right after a verb) preceded by ‘un’ or ‘une’ (a), ex : Louise has a sister = Louise a une soeur, elle en a une.

not extremely sophisticated and won’t catch all of your errors
but WILL prevent you from making dumb conjugation or agreement mistakes.

it marks what mistakes you made (writes them out and you can also hover over them - I couldn’t screenshot the entire list because it is VERY THOROUGH)
(I feel like I need to mention this is an automatically generated example, I’m bad at french but I’m not that bad)

and what you can do to fix them.
What do I do with it?
Obviously don’t rely on it 100%, but if you’ve been staring at an essay for five hours it’s so nice to be able to run it through and have it catch the article you misused in the middle of the fourth paragraph.
make sure you check again after correcting the errors because sometimes new ones will be flagged
double check your work, sometimes it suggests corrections that you don’t need to make (since it’s a computer program and you’re a person)

tips for learning your target language through listening to music:
always play your music either out loud or on low volume with your earphones in, the point is to hear yourself when you’re singing along and this way you can hear both yourself and the words to the song, this allows you to focus on getting the pronunciation right.
don’t shy away from singing without music to yourself but the key is to sing out loud and you’ll find you’re more than capable of correcting your own mistakes (especially if you’ve listened to the song a few times)
slow down songs if they’re too fast on youtube you can slow videos down by going on the videos setting at the bottom, slow down the video if you’re unable to catch what is being sung.
when you’re super confident test yourself using the karaoke version of the song of your choice.
