In my house, growing up, it was a "Brownie Cake," using the recipe from the 1964 edition of Joy of Cooking (note: the four ounces of chocolate called for was unsweetened). Instead of baking it in one big rectangular pan, Mom would bake it in two round pans, and slather the whole thing in whipped cream. The chopped nuts are optional, obviously.

Okay. Everybody got their cake? Stick a candle in it for Frederick Douglas's birthday. He was born to an enslaved mother, and his actual birthday wasn't recorded. So he decided, for himself, that his birthday was the 14th.

does beka have a sweet tooth?

absolutely! she never really got to have anything besides oatmeal, bacon soup, and demon meat, so her finally experiencing sugar for the first time in god knows how long was like a brand new awakening for her.

she more so loves chocolate and vanilla (and mint if she's depressed) but she'll try any different cake that exists at a ball or party :)
