Akamine_chan created The Fandom Snowflake Challenge back in 2012 as a way to remind herself “why I loved fandom so much”. Over the years the challenge itself has come to mean a lot to many of us, so by way of introduction some of the mods for this year have written about what The Fandom Snowflake Challenge means to them and why they are excited about it.

Muccamukk: Mucca mostly writes fic and reviews, usually in western media fandoms, and can never turn her back on a kink meme. She's been participating in the Snowflake Challenge off and on since year one, helping mod for the last five, and there still hasn't been any cake.

Misbegotten: I'm Misbegotten and this is my second year as a Snowflake mod. Fandom has been my happy place for many decades. My sad place too, but what's life without variety?

Sparrow2000: Hi I'm Sparrow2000 on LJ, DW and A03. I've made my fandom home in the Buffy 'verse for the last 20 odd (sometimes very odd!) years and it's where I write. Plano: Some Town Halfway In Between - While John is hiding from the law, his youngest son experiences disturbing visions (Dean/John from Sam POV). A horror fic that was also a super fun experiment with first person. I like a challenge!

December, Sutter County - Dean celebrates New Year 2002 with a woman from the bar in his bed, but his mind is elsewhere (Stanford-era Dean character study). I'm proud of the writing craft and use of setting in this one. Road trip fic, or anti-road trip fic?

Baton Rouge - Sam and Dean drive into the heart of a storm (post-15x19 first time Wincest). Probably my top fave if I had to choose, in no small part thanks to a certain wonderful beta... I'm a sucker for late-canon first time, and for hot handies in the bathroom when the power's out :)

Understand the Undernetting - The summer Dean was fourteen he fell in love with the hooker next door and learned monsters come in many forms (Weechesters gen or pre-slash). Probably not the kind of fic I'd write any more, but I'm glad I did. It was fun to weave an OC into the young boys' insular lives and poke at their blurred boundaries.

Time to Look at One Another - Dean comes to see Sam in Our Town. He has some thoughts about the play's depiction of love, life, and death (Teenchesters gen, Sam POV). My first published spn fic. A little sweet, a little wistful.

Meridia, is truly is a mess of contradiction. She is the daedric prince of light and life bit as much as she claims to care about the lives of the mortals on Nirn she doesn't appear to be above using them like toys to further her own goals.

This post will contain my own head canons and speculation. I will do my best to make it clear when I am using actual lore or kirkbride faux lore or my own head canons.

Meridia in Khajiit lore is the child of Margus or their version of Magnus. Not birthed but forged from from the Aether that Magnus creates. It makes sense that the child of the God that becomes the sun took an affinity to light. She played an important role in the Aelid pantheon becoming one of their patron dieties and even getting an entire thriving city built in her honor.

Although many people just see Meridia as a minor daedra I think she is quite overlooked. She seems to stay reserved and restrained most of the time however when other princes stand in her way she uses the full extent of her power to make them pay. The Hollow city is an excellent example of this. She exerted her power on another princes realm which is an unprecedented display of power. (I would cover the events of ESO however I haven't played the game myself and don't want to misrepresent information)

However in this display she simultaneously killed many of her devoted worshipers within the Hollow City seeing the loss of life as a worthwhile exchange for victory over Molag.

Meridia is really cool and as much as we meme on her I think that she has a lot of potential to be a really cool prince if given a chance.

Why did you pick the race you did for your Tav?

Tieflings are by far my favorite race in D&D, followed by aasimar and genasi. There was no other option tbh. I love anything that's half-monstrous but still humanoid enough to let me relate to it on a fundamental level (I can't play dragonborn even though I love how they look, cuz to me that's just a lizard unforch and I find it hard to "humanize" them in my mind? I know it's a weird problem to have but I have it). Anything with horns, tails, claws, fangs, weird eyes ... I just love them!

How does your Tav fight in a combat situation?

Generally, Hira keeps to the sidelines or the back, preferably on higher ground, in order to have better control over the battlefield. They use crowd control and AoE type spells, and buff and debuff as needed. Once they multiclass into pally, they are more comfortable getting up close and personal, but still generally hold a support/protection role instead of being the main melee damage-dealer.

What is their sense of humor like?

This video. And also this video. They flipflop between trying to make others laugh at their own expense and being casually mean for their own amusement.

What is the biggest mistake your Tav ever made?

I don't know if they've made one big mistake tbh, but rather they keep continuously making the same small mistake of lying to others for no reason and never trusting anyone or letting themself get emotionally vulnerable. It's more of a death by a thousand cuts type deal :') If I had to pick one, though, it's probably choosing to spare their sister when not doing that would've kept them in their family and probably entirely changed the trajectory of their life. Whether that's a mistake or not is debatable.

Hira is pansexual and has three "types": small, smart women who can beat your ass (gnomes, dwarves, halflings), beautiful and breedable men (elves, humans, tieflings, genasi) and finally: Large TM (anyone big enough, but generally orcs and dragonborn go here). Usually, he will find a way for his partner to simply to do it at some point, and when it’s required. He would play pretend, fake emotions as well, but it’s something that doesn’t shaken him at all - it was a part of his bigger scheme, and he wouldn’t need that person to be close to him anymore. Same would go if he wishes to break up first for the same kind of relationship, he will do it quickly during a rendezvous and then move on. His partners are toys that he only uses without any second thoughts. 

However, if Astra is genuinely in love with someone, then break-ups are a hard thing to experience because he has revealed a lot of his true personality. He won’t necessarily chased after his lover, mostly because it could result in more risk for his organization, but there’s a part of him who will be marked by that experience. He won’t expose his emotions, but for a few weeks or months, depending on the deepness of the bond, he’s going to quietly grieve and mourn this relationship. 

❤ – How affectionate is your muse? How do they feel about PDA?

It’s quite a fun thing in the end, but Astra only exposes tenderness for his partner in public when he doesn’t care about them. PDA is another mask, another kind of manipulation, he’s morphing into a genuine and careful lover, but it’s not his deep nature nor the way he would act with someone he actually loves. In private, he would be more distant with them in the end, far more secretive in his demeanors since there is no one to impress or manipulate anymore. 

He can be affectionate, it’s useful whenever he’s playing games, but it’s different whether, once again, he’s genuine or not. A real lover would receive more unprompted hugs, tender caresses, kisses and other acts of love. He cares about them, but it’s a secret he keeps for private moments, when there would be no eyes to pick on his true self. He’s also more into teasing rather than patronizing, having a vivid affection for their spirit and the way they react to his words. 

Someone who’s trapped in his spider web will only receive the slightest affection to continue to believe in his lies.

I like how Gyasto II is fun-loving and playful. She inherited it from Aang. She likes playing pranks on her friends and family.

With Lobsang, although, she is kind and bubbly. She can also be belligerent and direct like Toph.

She was taught to be a pacifist by Aang and the monks at the Southern Air Temple; but her Mom taught her that's it's okay to be combative. She's not afraid to use violence as a last resort.

👑 - What's their favorite childhood memory? if they didn't have a childhood, would they like to have one?

Iroh II's- He and his twin were 5 years old. Their Uncle Aang and Aunt Toph were visiting them at the Palace with Lo(7) and Gya(3).

Toph let the girls play in the rain in the garden while he watched on the steps.

When Kya II and the Beifong sisters went inside, he stayed outside with Katara to watch the rain.

He pretends the rain on his hands is him waterbending. Katara smiled softly. With her arm around his shoulders, she brought him closer to her.

Kya II's- Katara dedicates her time in meetings to help impoverished villages, donate clothes, blankets, and toys, repair houses, and give them food.

When she was 12 years old, they were visiting a village when a moo-sow broke loose from the farm.

The farmers and some villagers try to help catch the animals. They were genuinely surprised when Katara rolled up her sleeves and try to get the moo-sow.

Kya II and the rest of the villagers cheered her on as she tried to catch it. Kya II even laughed when she fell in the mud during the chase.

She eventually does and is able to calm the wiggly creature. She lifted the animal over her head with victorious grin.

The villagers laughed and cheered. Everyone is just surprised and amused because former Fire Ladies would never.

Azusa's- Her favorite butterflies are monarchs. When it was her 9th birthday, her parents surprised her by taking her to a butterfly garden.

When they arrived home for her birthday party, Zuko gifted her a glass display case of monarch butterflies to hang on her bedroom walls.

Lu Ten's- (He's 6) Katara's and Zuko's friend, Jiang, visited them. He was in absolute shock when his Mama and Jiang revealed that they were pirates.

They go to the beach for a treasure hunt with a map the women drew and he's immensely excited!

His parents siblings are part of his crew with Azusa as his first mate while he's Captain.

Him and Azusa dig up the treasure chest filled with jewelry and chocolate coins. After that, Zuko treats everyone to ice cream.

This is pretty popular in the fandom, because his relationship with Toby annoyed everyone, but I was honestly relieved at his death. He was such a jerk to Toby in Artificial Night like- she's going to save some kids and die in the process, and you can't do shit, and you're being mean to her about it? At least Luna had good reasoning. Connor was just an ass. ❤ Who’s most like me: Irritatingly, probably Raj, lmao. I am about that haughty and also that stupid, although I like to think a little less traumatized. ❤ Most attractive: Uhhhh, probably Joe? Toby's the only one I really have a good image of in my head, because she's on the covers. I always picture that one Black actor that played Mercutio once for Tybalt, tbh, but as far as I know that's pretty far off. ❤ Three more characters that I like: Simon, obviously - I genuinely liked him a lot as an antihero in Brightest Fell, because when he said "Sometimes home doesn't feel that way anymore, and that isn't your fault" and Toby asked if he was supposed to be the villain here and then felt super bad about it, and then he went "Be careful, October. This is the road that broke me," later on and I was like holy shit??? I'm not sure how I feel about how he's been in the past couple of books, because he keeps getting shunted to the side, and honestly with so much focus on his trauma it's really making him more... I dunno, for lack of a better term as a bit of a crybaby? Don't get me wrong, he deserves to have his trauma addressed and helped, and I know his trauma is depicted pretty realistically, but it's also the only thing we've seen from his side for a while. I think we need to look at his trauma, yes, because holy shit has he been through it, but like, Simon can get his shit together real fast if he's asked, and we haven't gotten to see much of that. We saw a mention during the wedding of him fighting, but we have not gotten him as part of the fight. Toby sent him away during Be the Serpent and I was so annoyed, because he works damn well as part of the action team, and he didn't get that.

But also, August and Quentin, honestly. We got ONE story from Quentin's POV, and that was ages ago. Chelsea mentioned that he doesn't want to be High King anymore, and I NEED to see things from his side and find out what's up with that. And August? We get to see so, so little of her. I know we'll get more of her in the next book, I know she's probably being set up to take May's usual role as Toby's action sister for a little bit so they can be friends, but I am desperately begging for it. We also almost never get to see Quentin actually fighting, and we know from Simon in AKF that Quentin learned his "win now bleed to death later" thing from Toby, but we never get to see him do it. I need to see both of these idiots do it. Pls. I'm begging Seanan personally.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Not after a real person. My mom said it was a name of a doll in some kind of fairy tale that she watched (or read?) and she just liked that name.

2. When was the last time you cried?

A week ago. Well, I guess I asked for it: after all those years I just should have known better than dwell on that kind of stuff from the past and in this part of my hormone cycle. (You know stuff like one of these few extremally rare moments in your life someone from your closest family said sth that made you feel like shit but thinking about it years after still never fails to make you feel like shit all over again?)

3. Do you have kids?

No. Surprisingly no. If asked ten years ago I would most surely say I'm going to. Not that I ever really desired it so much. More that not wanting was always considered as something that is worthy of condemnation. So it was just that "normal thing to do" with no deeper thinking involved nor required, you know?

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

It depends but sometimes it feels like the last thing that is left to defence my mental stability. And I'd rather be commenting an absurdish situation (especially in my job) than a person.

5. What sports do you play/have you played?

Table tennis my love!❤ Any other I ever tried playing is not even worth mentioning (I played field hockey two or three times and football once or twice and I remember really enjoying it. But unfortunately girls were let to play it extremally rarely, we were expected to play volleyball or basketball - none of which I ever liked😑)

6. What's the first thing you notice about other people?

I'm not sure what kind of situation I'm expected to consider... So in the place where I am just a random person in the crowd (railway station and such) I would probably first notice if anyone looked angry or impatient or irritated - to make sure I can avoid getting on their way (e.g. being a patient in a waiting room it's about sitting quietly with your head low and ignoring any possible evil comments about healthcare and politics). As for when I'm feeling safe or even going to meet someone new - I will pay attention to people's face expression and eyes, I also like to see someone smiling or doing or wearing something that make me think we have something in common. Also I notice their clothes sometimes if I liked the colour or the pattern (I can't help it, my brain is of visual artist😅 It doesn't mean I judge ppl by their look. Many times I find something ugly in objectively pretty person that I did not liked and in somebody I liked I'd always find some beautiful detail, regardless their look)

7. What's your eyes colour?

Yellow on the inside with blue ring on the outside. I like to think it makes them look a bit green from a distance.

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

If only two options avaliable I'd rather choose happy ending. Life is scary enough😅

9. Any special talents?

Drawing I guess. I am able to project a picture from my brain to a flat paper with a piece of charcoal and it's like freaking magic. It never stopped to amaze me.

10. Where were you born?

In a town in north Poland.

11. What are your hobbies?

Drawing most of all. Also creating short stories on my head I then illustrate or longer stories I sometimes write down. Given more free time I also like to engage into pyrography, sewing stuffed toys or crocheting. From time to time I like to travel, most usually to one of Polish towns but traveling abroad I like too.

12. Do you have any pets?

Cat for the last 4 years. Before that I was having syrian hamsters for almost 20 years (16 hamsters).

13. How tall are you?

165 centimeters.

14. Favorite subject in school?

Mathemathics above everything else! Also liked Polish, biology and chemistry. Most hated was always sports, while geography, history and physics were dangerously close to "hate" line.

15. Dream job?

Dream as "daydream"? I sometimes fantasize if I was born again I'd like to be one of the graphics making animated movie, like those of a Pixar studio. Or a pastor officiating weddings of gay couples

Dream as what I wish or plan: creating art on request or design prints for t-shirt, cushions and children blankets, maybe designing playing cards too - just enough for me to be satisfied that I can do it and my client to have a personalized gift. At the same time working other job 2-3 days a week to earn just enough for a comfortable life.

Listen, ADAM starting it bc 🥰Langa laughing🥰 but then Langa retaliates and discovers that ADAM is quite ticklish and he's just. fascinated and keeps going until ADAM is a mess on the floor, flushed, tears in his eyes, unable to breathe. Yeah ;)

On the regular tho, ADAM is the one more likely to have his hands on Langa, tickling him lightly just to summon a smile

Tadashi has to shake them both out of bed I'm sorry I keep dragging their pup into this but yeah. On off days tho I'm not sure I think it depends? They def let the other sleep tho, either to make breakfast or to stay in bed together just a bit longer 💙❤

LMAO ADAM man already has a ton from during the series and he's NOT about to stop. At some point Langa notices the drones but he doesn't mind much, he just gives him spice when he can ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

My writing style and the dead giveaways of my writing... this really needed a bit of introspection XD And I’m still not completely sure if I nailed the idea behind the question... hope it’ll be fine anyway! <3

But long answer, so under the cut this time too 😊

Present tense. To be honest, it's not like I always wrote in the present tense (I actually have hibernated WIPs, hWIP from now on, through the years that I wrote in the past tense, both in English and in my first language). In my current fandom though, I found it easier to write with it and I like how it sounds and how it flows. So, I think that if I'll have to write a secret fic at this time, I would absolutely use it.

Multi-POV. I think this would come into play more if the secret fic is going to be a long fic. I'm usually able to limit myself to a single POV in one-shots. In long fic, though, multi-POV all the way. Almost all my hWIPs are multi-POV, because I love the chance to explore more than one character, their ways of thinking, and their emotions. And how the plot is explored too between the different POVs. I just find it more fun, and writing fics should be fun so ;) Even more, I noticed that often an ensemble cast or a main character+interesting and participating second characters increase the chance of me at least outlining some idea for that fandom, so... it may not be a coincidence ;)

Chapters Title. This I think is something really minor, but I found out I really like giving titles to the chapters of my long fics (even when I have to think about it for days). I usually prefer something short/medium-short that manages to capture the feel of the chapter without giving in away too much (unless there's a reason to).

Canon Divergence/What-if. When I love a fandom (and this usually means I love the characters + a plot that at least I don't dislike too much), I love to explore how things could've been if something went just a little bit differently, if a character was in a place where they weren't or vice versa and things like that. There's something I really find appealing in the challenge and satisfaction of walking through the butterfly effect with my characters and readers. This happens a lot in my hWIPs too.

Missing Moments. While it's not as prominent as the point above, I found out through the years that is a thing I like too, to add that tiny bit that I thought missing in the story as it is and that they just didn't give me. it obviously happens more often with my one-shots. Not even my chronic longfic syndrome is able to span a missing moment on dozen of chapters (luckily. Unless is some kind of prequel thing or something like that...).

Female characters. To be clear, it's not that I don't like male characters or I don't like to write about them (U-won, Yi Jin, Yi Rim, Yang to just name a few about Rookie Historian are a clear proof). And, to be honest, I think I always end up with a good proportion between prominence given to male and female characters (even if it's a too reductive way to define what a character can be, but let's simplify this one time) in my fics. But, yes, female characters and their friendships and relationship are going to be central in my stories more often than not.

Dialogue and Inner Voice. I may write descriptions (and like it too), but one things that I love is writing dialogue between characters. Often, it’s the first thing I write down for a scene. I love trying to capture the specific character’s voice and try to make it pop out of the page (don’t know if it always work XD). That’s why I think of the characters’ inner voice as an extension of it. How can I do without something like Yang’s inner exasperation or Hae-ryung’s unapologetic remarks? ;)

Character Relationships. Friendship, family, romance, siblings, rivals, parent-child, whatever for better or worse, in the foreground or in the background of the characters' actions and thoughts, I love to weave and explore the relationships between the characters, how the plot can affect them/be affected by them and how they can affect the character themself. I love to create interesting (I hope) plots, but then I use them as a means to see the characters and make a deep dive into their emotions. This is one reason more why I like ensemble cast: they already give me things to work upon!

Happy ending. Or at least a hopeful one (The Flower that Bloom..., My One and Only Brother). Bittersweet if nothing else works (The Quiet Fall...). I may read/watch something with a sad/tragic ending, but I'm not going to go searching for it. And, usually, I'm not going to write it. I hopelessly love happy endings and, even if I'm going to send my characters through hell and back, you can bet I'm going to give them their happy ending (not that this means necessarily a sugarcoated one though).

And last one, to end with a laugh (I'm really not being serious here):

Being slooow. Not really something that you can call "writing style", but I couldn't help but mention it XD I mean, if you write a long fic as long as mine it surely is something really annoying and that really stands up in the end LOL
