Remembering Poly Styrene, British musician, singer-songwriter, and frontwoman for the punk rock band X-Ray Spex. She died of metastatic breast cancer on 25 April 2011, at the age of 53
“Later we [Culture Club] played with them a few times and they had the most unique, hypnotic sound. It’s trashy Americana, John Waters, Divine, the Shangri-La’s, high camp and bubblegum punk. The beat is everything. Fred always reminded me of Dr Zachary Smith from Lost in Space. I never thought about whether the B-52’s had a gay angle. They were just against rules in general – taking classic American kitsch and giving it a punk, space-age irreverence, like a beautiful car crash with pop surrealism. They were very camp but very funky: always on it, melodic but effortlessly free. It’s the sort of pop music that I want to hear.”

Born on this day: happy 76th birthday to the sublime Kate Pierson (née Catherine Elizabeth Pierson, 27 April 1948) - singer, multi-instrumentalist, bouffant wig enthusiast and one of the founding members of Athens, Georgia’s essential post-punk party band the B-52’s! For me, Pierson’s spine-tingling dissonant science fiction anti-harmonies with co-vocalist Cindy Wilson are one of the defining sounds of American New Wave music. Is anyone ever ready for a close partner never coming back, being gone forever, I ask.
"No. I don't think so," she replies. "Joe was fun to live with. I remember one day - I think my daughter must have been about five or six - and we woke up and it was a beautiful morning, and Joe said, 'No school today. We are going down to Cornwall for the day'. He lived life for the moment."
Does Lucinda live in the moment?
"I wish I did. I try. I do try! I hear Joe's voice the whole time, saying, 'Go for it. Go on. Just say yes'. " And that's what his early death should teach us. He was 50. 'Just go for it! Say yes!'" Lucinda says, echoing the love of her life."
Happy birthday to Catherine Elizabeth Pierson aka Kate Pierson, American singer, lyricist and one of the singers and founding members of B-52, born on this day in 1948.
1. Find what you want to make into a patch. It's best if you can find a black and white image of what you want (or just draw it), whatevers in white should be able to support itself when you get rid of the negative space.
2. Print and use the edge of a pencil to shade the back of the image, it should look a bit tike this.
3. Flip around and use masking tape to stick it to card or watercolour paper, then use a blunt pencil to trace around your image. You should be left with a faded outline of what you want on the card underneath.
4. Use an art knife or box cutter to carve out all the negative space
5. Finally used a sponge and some acrylic paint and dab it over the stencil onto your fabric. I ironed the fabric I used beforehand so it was flatter and easier to print on
Anyway Ive struggled finding ways to print that work for me so I hope this works for other ppl
