ARTICLE: 2022 ROUND-UP: THE YEAR IN MUSIC
Tumblr media
For another year running, Nigerian music continues its uprise and remains a ray of sunshine in a country that seems to be moving in the opposite direction. Using albums, EPs and singles, Nigerian acts  wrestled for positions on the charts and the love of fans, with winners subsequently emerging to stamp their names on the year's music history. Also, with Tiktok cementing its position as an X factor that can be a spark for a song's unexpected blow up, and other social media platforms maintaining this role, the gap closed even further between A list and upcoming artists, and a number of lesser known acts would have their break outs in 2022. However, big names are big for a reason, and a few of them produced music that would colour yet another year end selection. It has never been more difficult to keep track of the widening pool of music from Nigerian stables, so here is a handy round-up to rewind through some of the most memorable music releases of the year.
"Finesse" is a fine example of Tiktok giving an unpopular artist that extra juice needed to propel a career. Pheelz the producer is one of the biggest in the game, and his name will call to mind a bevy of hit singles when brought up in any discussion, but for Pheelz the artist, a discography is considerably less thin. "Finesse", his first effort of 2022, landed straight in the top corner, though, and why wouldn't it, with a Tiktok snippet having gained momentum before its arrival, a verse from 'Feature Master' BNXN, and an undeniably infectious chorus, it was always going to be one for the ages.
Elsewhere, Tiktok would wheel in another track for its own moment in the sun, this time not in advance of its release but in retrospect. "Gentility", a product of Melvitto and Wande Coal, began its ascent up the charts three years after its release, with every progress excitedly cheered on by Nigerians until its eventual climax at number one. Pheelz was not the only producer-turned-artist to have an amazing 2022. Young Jonn, another man best known for orchestrating some of Olamide's biggest hits to date, also turned out in fine form for a switch to preforming music. His 2022 is summed in two EPs - Love Is Not Enough and its sequel, but his biggest highlights were singles, "Dada" (and its Davido-assisted remix) and "Xtracool". With these he made complete his transformation, ensuring his name will evoke a memory of a performing artist as much as music producer.
Asake is an artist without whom any wrap up of 2022's music is rendered incomplete. Nearly ten years after Olamide's lyrics "Olamide is here just like the first day of the year", his new protégé arrived in such fashion, as the two linked up for Asake's grand opening with "Omo Ope" in January. He would then go on to release new music in nearly every single month, perfectly utilising a commercial model that entails inserting yourself constantly in your consumers eyes (and ears), so that when this run climaxed in an album, Mr. Money With The Vibe, it was received by an audience that had been eagerly waiting.
When he did take breaks between releases, however, other artists had their time to shine. Kizz Daniel did not have a hectic year by volume, but only a single track, "Buga" packed a large enough punch to nearly match Asake's 2022 impact. "Buga" cut across generations in its allure, pulling to the dance floor even those who would have previously sworn off dancing. The ingredients that are so infectious — simplicity of lyrics and purpose, a folk sound and an easy to follow dance routine — would all recur on "Odo", and to a fairly similar result.
"Last Last" is a track usually mentioned together with "Buga" in conversations around the song of the year. In mid-May, barely ten days after Kizz Daniel debuted his to-be hit single, Burna Boy released "Last Last" as part of a packed new music Friday. Other entrees, Davido ("Stand Strong"), Asake ("Palazzo", with DJ SPINALL), Zinoleesky ("Loving You"), and the Mavin crew (Overdose) made for interesting competition, and though they would all go on to leave their respective imprints, the day's winner was not in doubt, especially as its national dominance transcended seamlessly to a global run that ensured the "Na Everybody go chop breakfast" line rang out from iconic venues like the Madison Square Garden.
Like the year before it, 2022 granted some younger artists the biggest leaps of their careers. Where 2021 gave international debuts to Tems and CKay, and they only had to maintain their euphoric rise this year, other acts, some expected and others a surprise, took the batons to make 2022 their own status shifting year. Oxlade, talented as he is, would be placed in the second category, so that the rise of "Ku Lo Sa", his mid year release, was as unanticipated as it was exciting. Other acts tipped to cover much ground in 2022 did just that. Rema debuted "Calm Down" and its remix while Omah Lay tapped up Justin Bieber for "Attention", and as they joined the Ed Sheeran-assisted remix of Fireboy's "Peru" from late last year on Billboard and Official UK charts, the future stars of Nigerian music took steps closer to the age of their reign.
Their contributions to the year did not end as singles, however, as these releases would become lead singles for their albums, Rave and Roses (Rema), Playboy (Fireboy) and Boy Alone (Omah Lay). Of these, though, Omah Lay's was the only one with the exquisite attention to cohesion required to put an album in 'Classic' conversations, and it deservedly appears on every Nigerian Album Of The Year selection there is — no mean feat in a year when returning giants like Wizkid and Burna Boy as well as an emerging star like Asake also rolled out sterling projects.
The year also had something for other more niche artists as well who found joy operating in their own segments of Nigerian music. Alté stalwarts Obongjayar and Santi emerged with albums to the satisfaction of a small, devoted fanbase. For what they lacked in publicity and marketing, their albums, Some Nights I Dream Of Doors and Subaru Boys: FINAL HEAVEN more than made up for in the quality of the music, and as often happens with Alté artists, this was recognised by publications from beyond the country, as they both earned places on the FADER's albums of the year list amongst others.
At another end of the niche pool lies street pop acts like Bella Shmurda, T. I. Blaze and Seyi Vibez who weren't left out of the album fever, bringing tales of hustle and love to albums Hypertension, El Major and Billion Dollar Baby. Coming to the end of the year also marks that Portable is now one year deep into his assumed five minutes of fame, and with a modest hit ("Azaman"), and a fairly successful album (Ika Of Africa) logged in this year, it can no longer be contested that he possess a smart, strategic mind somewhere beneath all that hair dye.
Rap had its own resurgence in 2022, which was interesting, as its credibility as a Nigerian genre would be called into question following some (misinterpreted?) comments on the genre from Wizkid. Any careful observer of the scene, however, could not have missed albums from returning dons like M.I. (The Guy), Vector (Teslim), Falz (BAHD) and A-Q (Ethos, with Brymo), youngsters like Blaqbonez (Young Preacher) and PsychoYP and even Black Sherif. The Ghanaian rapper debuted The Villain I Never Was in October after a year spent building anticipation and forming smart cross-country ties with tracks like "Second Sermon" Remix (with Burna Boy) and "Kwaku The Traveller", and these rappers, with their music and the impact it made, fought to reestablish rap's relevance in Nigeria.
As 2022 was a music year with something for every single person, it would have been too bad if collaborative albums were left out. Thankfully, both the Mavin group and EMPIRE'S African division ensured this did not happen. Their respective efforts, Chapter X and Where We Come From went with different routes, with the former banking on the harmony of its vocalists while the latter sought to highlight Africa's diversity of sound, to arrive at a similar destination of thoroughly enjoyable group albums.
As 2022 draws to a close in a matter of days, penning this many big names and this much good music on a single year's round-up speaks to the volume and quality of music that graced it. Even better news, judging by the number of upcoming acts still seeking an opportunity to impress, as well as newly minted stars looking to underline their newfound status, every indication points to 2023 being an even bigger year for Nigerian music releases, and a better year for music enthusiasts. Can it live up to that potential though? We can only wait and see.

Kokoroko - Could We Be More - at last, a full album! Still Afrobeat at the core, but contintuing to broaden their sound (Brownswood)
Today sees the phenomenal, London based 8-piece band Kokoroko anounce their long-awaited debut album Could We Be More via Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. Could We Be More is an expansive and ambitious album that speaks to the force of Kokoroko. Each song possesses the energy which so naturally underpins the heartbeat of Kokoroko’s identity - deftly moving through afrobeat, highlife, soul, and funk across the album’s 15 tracks and taking inspiration from a plethora of other influences from within the West-African and Caribbean communities that the band grew up listening to - the album gifts the listener feelings of homecoming and joy. Speaking on the origins of Could We Be More, band members Sheila Maurice-Grey and Onome Edgeworth explain: “I think home has hugely informed the way we write and play our music. Everyone comes from different backgrounds but the thing that unites us in Kokoroko is that we all have a similar love and appreciation for afrobeat and highlife, whether that’s Ebo Taylor or Pat Thomas,” Sheila says. “It’s that feeling when you’re younger and you hear something and you feel some ownership over it. For me, Nigerian music and soul was played in the house a lot so I felt I had ownership over it so when I heard it elsewhere, there was a certain pride and energy filled with it. Recreating a piece of music that fills you with pride, ‘this is a piece of me and this is what I came from,’” Onome adds. Musicians: Sheila Maurice-Grey - Trumpet, Vocals Cassie Kinoshi - Alto Sax, Vocals Richie Seivwright - Trombone, Vocals Onome Edgeworth - Percussion Ayo Salawu - Drums Tobi Adenaike-Johnson - Guitar Yohan Kebede - Synthesizers, Keyboards Duane Atherley - Bass, Synthesizers, Keyboards

Never one to rehash the past, Madonna is taking a two-pronged approach to celebrating the 40th anniversary of her debut album — nodding to the past with two career-spanning remix collections, while remaining rooted in the present by remixing Sickick’s mega-viral reimagining of “Frozen.”

Baba Commandant and the Mandingo Band - Sonbonbela
Sublime Frequencies is honored to release the third LP from Baba Commandant and the Mandingo Band. Sonbonbela was recorded in the beginning of 2022 in the Republic of Burkina Faso. The group continue to hone their trademark fusion of Mandingue and afro-beat styles. The Mandingo Band are a hit machine, sculpting seven new tracks of near Beefheart/Magic Band dynamics, Fela inspired groovers dusted out in the Sahel zone, rather than the humidity and sweat of Lagos, creating one of the most original and propulsive musical statements to come from the contemporary West African cultural juggernaut. As with previous releases, the band features the legendary guitar pyrotechnics of Issouf Diabate, truly one of the greatest West African (or Earth for that matter) guitarists of the last forty years. The band is completed by a near bottomless barrel of artistry from the Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso musical talent pool. On bass guitar, Wendeyida Ouedraogo, on drums Abbas Kabore, and on percussion and balafon, Nickie Dembele. Leading the charge again is the captain himself, Mamdou Sanou on the Doso Ngoni featuring one of the most distinctive voices of the modern era. The opposite of the banal trends of auto-tune that have pervaded most of West African popular music, Baba’s voice still impresses with its gravel and grit, showcasing a range that is ancient and defiant in equal measure. This LP is a non-stop hit parade of afro-beat bangers destined to light dance floors and living rooms ablaze!!! This album is dedicated to the memory of Massimbo Taragna, the bass player extraordinaire who was an integral part of the Mandingo Band’s trance stun musical power who passed away in early 2022. Auteur compositeur BABA COMMANDANT (Mamadou SANOU) Co-composition Issouf Diabaté Sauf Sere Jugu de Victor DEME Guitar: Issouf DIABATE, Simon CHENET sur "sonbanbela" Bass : Wendeya Jessie Josias OUEDRAOGO Drums, Choeurs : Cheick Abbas KABORE Percussion, Balafon : Nickie DEMBELE
