There is also a possibility to start working on textures and painting using this 3D sculpting program. Hopefully, there are some exceptions and SculptGL is one of them! This is a browser-based solution allowing you to begin with all the standard 3D sculpting tools like brush, inflate, smooth, etc.
Freecad for mac free software#
Leopoly is an easy 3D creation platform and it also includes some great VR features, which could even be more developed in the future.ģD sculpting software can quickly be really expensive and a bit difficult to use if you are not used to it. You will be able to create your 3D project from scratch, import a 3D model or check if you find what you want in their library and customize it.
Freecad for mac free free#
However, if you want to get started with a free and browser-based version of this software, it is possible. This Leopoly CAD software is interesting but there are different versions available for this program, but business solutions are not free. However, this 3D-Crafter free version can help you make your first steps with 3D modeling with its intuitive interface.
Freecad for mac free pro#
Even if it is a free and easy-to-use software, 3D-Crafter is really allowing to create complex 3D models, but if you want, you can go further with a pro version for game development and realistic rendering, but this advanced version is not free! It will enable you to create drawings and animating 3D objects. It is an intuitive CAD program, thanks to its drag and drop approach. This program is even including a VR view!ģD-Crafter is a free design software developed by Amabilis Software. This software is allowing to start an STL or OBJ file, to sculpt shapes and manipulate your 3D model quite easily. 3D Slash software offers an access to basic features in an intuitive way. As this program really works as a building game, it is fun and allowing to start easily with CAD. Indeed, it is a good introduction to 3D modeling. Some features are specifically designed for schools, making this software useful for educational purposes. However, if you are looking for a program to get an initiation to 3D modeling and 3D printing, you definitely have to try it out.ģD Slash is perfect if you really have no previous experience with 3D, but it is also a perfect software for kids. This program is really simple to use and doesn’t offer a lot of options but still allows you to work on STL, OBJ or 3MF files. A library is available, where you can choose among already made projects. Thanks to a simplified interface, 3D Builder can be used by anyone. This 3D modeling application is integrated into Windows. You never used CAD technology before and you want to start with an easy program? Here are free CAD software for beginners and for kids. We are going to give you a hand with your choice, we made a selection of the best free CAD programs actually available on the market. You will have a lot of criteria to consider while choosing your CAD programs. Would you prefer to use cloud-based software? Cloud storage could be a perfect choice if you need to improve your data management, and it is avoiding to deal with complex CAD packages. Indeed a lot of other parameters can be taken into account: Do you need parametric or direct modeling software? A parametric modeler allows users to modify easily a design and navigate through the model history. However, you will be able to find a free 3D modeling software with all the specific features you need for your 3D project. Most of the time, software targeting a specific sector aren’t free. Indeed, each of these sectors has specified programs. From the medical sector to architecture and fashion, you can now find dedicated software for all sectors. If there is software for all levels of experience, there is also software for all different industries. In this blog post we are going to make a selection of 3D software classified by the level of experience needed to use it: for beginners or for experienced users! Check all the specific features you need Your level of expertise will be the first criteria you will need to take into account while choosing your 3D program! Even when it comes to free CAD software, you can find really complex and technical programs. Are you a beginner, intermediate or advanced user? Some software can really be difficult to use, with a lot of different features and complex interface. You can find programs for every level of experience. In order to make the best choice possible, you will have to ask yourself the good questions. There is a lot of CAD programs available on the market and you might be a bit lost.

Inspiration #2
“Arthur Schopenhauer on the Relationship Between Genius and Madness and How Memory Mediates the Blurry Line Between Sanity and Insanity,” by Maria in Brainpickings at https://www.brainpickings.org/2016/07/19/schopenhauer-genius-madness/
“I don’t believe insanity is either a requirement or a guarantee for brilliance,” cosmologist Janna Levin wrote in her elegant inquiry into madness and genius. And yet the cooccurrence of the two has long permeated our cultural mythology of creativity.Nearly two centuries before modern psychologists came to study the complex relationship between creativity and mental illness, the great German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer (February 22, 1788–September 21, 1860) dedicated to it a lengthy passage in The World as Will and Representation (public library) — the 1818 masterwork that also gave us Schopenhauer on the crucial difference between genius and talent.Schopenhauer writes:
“It has often been remarked that there is a side at which genius and madness touch, and even pass over into each other, and indeed poetical inspiration has been called a kind of madness: amabilis insania, Horace calls it.
[…]
This cannot be ascribed to chance, for on the one hand the number of mad persons is relatively very small, and on the other hand a person of genius is a phenomenon which is rare beyond all ordinary estimation, and only appears in nature as the greatest exception… It might seem from this that every advance of intellect beyond the ordinary measure, as an abnormal development, disposes to madness.”
And yet however enticing the myth of the mad genius might be, Schopenhauer points out that what makes it problematic is the nebulous nature of madness itself and the blurry line between sanity and insanity. In a passage that presages what scientists have since discovered about how memory disorders illuminate the workings of the mind, he writes:
“A clear and complete insight into the nature of madness, a correct and distinct conception of what constitutes the difference between the sane and the insane, has, as far as I know, not as yet been found. Neither reason nor understanding can be denied to madmen, for they talk and understand, and often draw very accurate conclusions; they also, as a rule, perceive what is present quite correctly, and apprehend the connection between cause and effect… For the most part, madmen do not err in the knowledge of what is immediately present; their raving always relates to what is absent and past, and only through these to their connection with what is present. Therefore it seems to me that their malady specially concerns the memory; not indeed that memory fails them entirely, for many of them know a great deal by heart, and sometimes recognize persons whom they have not seen for a long time; but rather that the thread of memory is broken, the continuity of its connection destroyed, and no uniformly connected recollection of the past is possible. Particular scenes of the past are known correctly, just like the particular present; but there are gaps in their recollection which they fill up with fictions, and these are either always the same, in which case they become fixed ideas, and the madness that results is called monomania or melancholy; or they are always different, momentary fancies, and then it is called folly, fatuitas.”
The World as Will and Representation remains an indispensable read. Complement this particular portion with Joni Mitchell on therapy and the creative mind, then revisit Schopenhauer on what makes a genius and the intellectual rewards of boredom.

Marian Thought for the Day – 7 May “Mary’s Month” – Monday of the Sixth week of Eastertide
Mary is the “Mater Amabilis” the Lovable or Dear Mother Blessed John Henry Newman (1801-1890)
WHY is she “Amabilis” thus specially?   It is because she was without sin.   Sin is something odious in its very nature and grace is something bright, beautiful, attractive.
However, it may be said that sinlessness was not enough to make others love her, or to make her dear to others and that for two reasons:   first, because we cannot like anyone that is not like ourselves and we are sinners;   and next, because her being holy would not make her pleasant and winning because holy persons whom we fall in with, are not always agreeable and we cannot like them, however we may revere them and look up to them.
Now as to the first of these two questions, we may grant that bad men do not, cannot like good men but our Blessed Virgin Mary is called Amabilis, or lovable, as being such to the children of the Church, not to those outside of it, who know nothing about her and no child of Holy Church but has some remains of God’s grace in his soul which makes him sufficiently like her, however greatly wanting he may be, to allow of his being able to love her.   So we may let this question pass.
But as to the second question, viz., How are we sure that our Lady, when she was on earth, attracted people round her and made them love her merely because she was holy?—considering that holy people sometimes have not that gift of drawing others to them.
To explain this point we must recollect that there is a vast difference between the state of a soul such as that of the Blessed Virgin, which has never sinned and a soul, however holy, which has once had upon it Adam’s sin;   for, even after baptism and repentance, it suffers necessarily from the spiritual wounds which are the consequence of that sin. Holy men, indeed, never commit mortal sin, nay, sometimes have never committed even one mortal sin in the whole course of their lives.   But Mary’s holiness went beyond this. She never committed even a venial sin and this special privilege is not known to belong to anyone but Mary.
Now, whatever want of amiableness, sweetness, attractiveness, really exists in holy men arises from the remains of sin in them, or again from the want of a holiness powerful enough to overcome the defects of nature, whether of soul or body but, as to Mary, her holiness was such, that if we saw her and heard her, we should not be able to tell to those who asked us anything about her except simply that she was angelic and heavenly.
Of course, her face was most beautiful but we  should not be able to recollect whether it was beautiful or not, we should not recollect any of her features because it was her beautiful sinless soul, which looked through her eyes and spoke through her mouth and was heard in her voice and compassed her all about.   When she was still, or when she walked, whether she smiled, or was sad, her sinless soul, this it was, which would draw all those to her who had any grace in them, any remains of grace, any love of holy things.
There was a divine music in all she said and did—in her mien, her air, her deportment, that charmed every true heart that came near her.   Her innocence, her humility and modesty, her simplicity, sincerity, and truthfulness, her unselfishness, her unaffected interest in everyone who came to her, her purity—it was these qualities which made her so lovable and were we to see her now, neither our first thought nor our second thought would be, what she could do for us with her Son, (though she can do so much) but our first thought would be, “Oh, how beautiful!” and our second thought would be, “Oh, what ugly hateful creatures are we!”
Mater Amabilis, Pray for us!

@jollygoodday
I’m actually currently thinking about which drawings I will turn into stickers and postcards :3c Because I want a new set of postcards for the Wasted!-Festival
I thought about the Planterhead-drawing and the one with Amabilis as postcards and the Kraken and the upcoming Ghost Monstrousmarch-drawing as stickers :3c
I could also see the Amabilis-drawing as a nice illustration for a tiny note pad

//Coffee, dark rooms and lovely monsters.// • IT- Salve amabili felloni! ☕🖤 •   ENG - Hi lovely fellas! Sunday 6th June 2021
Super Sunday in the Garden and Day 6 #30Days Wild
First off, from the kitchen
Tumblr media
possibly my favourite herb - thyme
I’ve picked some thyme and used it with slow cooked tomatoes to have with supper tonight.
Tumblr media
Red again in a fruit breakfast this morning. Kent Strawberries (absolutely delicious) nectarine, grapes, apple and banana with Greek yoghurt and homemade granola. Crow always smiles at me ‘playing’ with fruit and vegetables, but I always have to sort and grade them - strawberries and potatoes particularly. One didn’t fit in anywhere! Truth be told it was a little soft so it got cut in half and shared ahead of the game because there were an odd number anyway.
Tumblr media
Homegrown Ruby Red Rhubarb - a very welcome gift from S next door 😋
I love Rhubarb. Thinking about it, I think I like all red food. I’m going to cook it down and we’ll have it with some smoked mackerel or pork dishes.
Shouldn’t have started off by talking about food because I’m ravenous now, so let’s move on to a totally different colour palette in our garden.
Tumblr media
After my upset at the railway station strimming on Friday, I went down the lawn to check out the patches we’ve left after No Mow May ended. We’ve left quite a few and I have to say, although the photos haven’t captured it, they were heaving with bees, absolutely heaving, far too many to count. It was fabulous. I called Crow to come and look too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trouble is, the Bees were moving quickly and my focusing is slow.
While we were down at the bottom of the garden we discovered some unwelcome news. Not quite sure when it happened or why, it must be very recent because the tree is in leaf, but one of the ancient apple trees just the other side of the fence, has completely uprooted and come down. There’s a gap now and I shall miss it.
In brighter news there are some lovely scents now, especially from the Choisya (Mock Orange)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hedgerows are blossoming and the Palms are too, well, the one on the left side of the garden.
Tumblr media
Cordyline australis aka cabbage palm
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Over at the side, in front of the conifers, one of the rose bushes has plenty of buds at last
Tumblr media
and the pretty pink Dog Rose is out now too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When is a Rose not a Rose?
Tumblr media
When it’s a Guelder-Rose of course (Viburnum opulus) looking great this year.
Tumblr media
and at the side of the decking, the much more delicate Beauty Bush (Kolkwitzia amabilis)
As for the visitors, I couldn’t believe it when M Flambeau came last evening and had a few mouthfuls of the Scotch Pancakes we’d put out for the Rooks. Silly Flambeau.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He then went on to have a CAT NAP in the border and didn’t bother any of the birds at all. Actually I’m a little concerned about him, his right eye looks a bit sore and weepy. Hope his owners have that under control.
Tumblr media
Female House Sparrow
Tumblr media
So there you are, a round up. We spent the day in the garden and it was extremely pleasant, a lovely sunny day with a very pleasant temperature. I pottered, snipping bits, digging and starting to sand down my Dad’s bench, ready to repaint it. The background track was TMS on the radio and it was thoroughly enjoyable. I absolutely love it when it’s like this.
KITCHEN NEWS:
Tonight Ed, we’re going to be having a rib eye steak with horseradish sauce, baked potato, ratatouille, the slow cooked tomatoes and a salad made of pea shoots, radish, cucumber and avocado. I can’t wait.
PS the teams agreed that the cricket should be a draw (Lord’s Ground: England -v- New Zealand)

Buongiorno! Bentornati! Buona giornata a tutti! 😄 Goodmorning! Welcome back! The biggest piece of news of today is that, nuntio vobis gaudio magno, I've finished midterms! (Applause, applause)😄 So, I'm thinking of a lot of big things to recover after this long period of deprivations: I've got some lovely books to be read while I'm wandering by train and an unquantifiable figure of drawings I'd like to make. What about tv series? Well, I'm finally watching the fourth season of Better Call Saul, which deals with the communication's master Saul Goodman and his deeds. It's the story of the lawyer of Breaking Bad before he actually became Saul 😊. How shall I put this, nothing will ever beat the magnificent Breaking Bad, but you should really watch it, you won't be disappointed. Have a nice day! 😄 #picsoftheday #tramonto #tramonti #sunset #pausa #bettercallsaul #sameviewdifferentsky #magic #tvserie #tvseries #vacanze #happycatulla #breakingbad #favourite #midterm #parziali #unilife #uni #università #university #vitauniversitaria https://www.instagram.com/p/BpohTH7HW4e/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=6z21l3huq02x

Gear Review: Amabilis Responder Series, concealed carry clothing for women

Gear Review: Amabilis Responder Series, concealed carry clothing for women
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The Responder Tactical Jacket features areas to sport patches. (Photo: Jacki Billings/Guns.com)
While the gun and gear industry is inundated with tactically styled apparel for the operator in us all, there are those who a more low-key approach to tactical and concealed carry wear. Enter.
First appearing on crowd-funding sites with its innovative Dave Duffel Bag, the company quickly moved on to bigger endeavors, launching an apparel line on Kickstarter. Not just satisfied with offering looks for men, Amabilis upped the ante, introducing options for women.
As a self-proclaimed micro warrior, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Amabilis’ gear to give it a thorough go from a lady’s perspective.
Responder Tactical Jacket
The jacket has 10 pockets in total, including one the chest. Once zipped, a button can be secured to prevent unwanted viewers from seeing what users are packing. (Photo: Jacki Billings/Guns.com)
First up in the Amabilis arsenal is the . The jacket sports a water-repellent military-styled look with laser cut Molle patterns and hook-and-loop swatches on the shoulders and chest for nametapes and patches. Offered in Tactical Black and Military Green with sizes ranging from XS to XL, the Responder Tactical Jacket comes in what the company terms the “.5 Fit.” The .5 Fit offers half sizes for users who fall in between sizes and seek a better fit.
When the Tactical Black Responder Jacket, in size small, arrived at my doorstep it wasn’t quite love at first sight. Honestly, I wasn’t entirely sure I dug the military inspired aesthetics. However, I was quickly reminded not to judge a book, or coat for that matter, by its cover. Though it looked questionable stretched across the end of my bed, it looked sleek and stylish on.
Black, of course, looks great with everything and the Responder Tactical Jacket is no exception. The functionality of 10-plus pockets made it easier to store extra mags, lights, lipstick, snacks, spare Legos….you know everything a Tactical Target mom needs. The jacket touts premium YKK zippers and after several months of use, they’re still going strong.
Another added feature of the jacket is its ability to coincide with concealed carry. Along each side of the jacket is a zipper that can be unzipped upward to provide access to a concealed holster and gun in the 3-to-5 o’clock position. Though I prefer to carry in the appendix position, the option to switch my gun to the rear was nice one to have. It’s also worth mentioning that even in AIWB, the jacket is short enough that it did not impede my draw from my AIWB holster.
Now the downside – the price. Let’s be honest, I’m the kind of mom that usually spends $25 maybe $45 on outerwear for myself. The Responder Jacket, though well made, is a little out of this single mom’s price range. Coming in at $279, consumers looking to snatch the jacket need to prepare to throw down some coin. Despite the sticker shock, the jacket has held up since I received it earlier this year, so you’ll get some mileage from it which makes it a little easier to justify the heftier price.
Responder Hoody
Shop On SecondCovers
The Responder Hoody features black accents around the shoulders and hem and can be buttoned up all the way to retain even more heat. (Photo: Jacki Billings/Guns.com)
Following the Responder Tactical Jacket is Amabilis’ second tactically understated look – the .
The Responder Hoody is made to either wear solo as a generic hoody or pair with the Responder Tactical Jacket for a warmer solution. Constructed from Polartec Thermal Pro Fabric, a 100-pecent recycled material, the Hoody also utilizes stretch fleece on the hem and cuffs as well as nylon on the shoulder patches. The hoody comes in two color schemes – Moss Green or Asphalt Grey – in sizes XS to XL. Amabilis sent me the Asphalt Grey in size small.
Spoiler alert – I absolutely adore the hoody. From the moment I saw it, it was like John Cusack was standing under my window while Peter Gabriel blared from a boombox. The Responder Hoody fantastically melds fashion with tactical aesthetics. Featuring abrasion shoulder protection and zippered-secured hand pockets, the hoody is roomy enough to pack a knife, phone or spare light and mag; but doesn’t make you look like you’re in operator mode.
For my petite body frame, the Hoody was a winner. It was roomy enough to allow me to tote my Glock 19 comfortably and without any concern of printing; but not so big that I looked swallowed by material. In fact, it balances function and fashion so well I received a bevy of compliments from people around town and on social media, raving about the hoody’s looks.
Though the Hoody is overwhelmingly positive, there are a couple gripes I have. For one, it’s warm but it won’t keep you super toasty on extremely cold days. While I wore it just fine when the temp was in the high 30’s, anything below that and I was shivering after a few. A good breeze, pushes air into the fabric and will gave me a good chill; but that’s easily solvable with the addition of the Responder Jacket. More on that in a minute.
The next issue I had is the same as the Responder Jacket –price. The hoody does offer a slightly lower price tag than its sister jacket, but it’s still on the premium side at $110. Is the price worth it? That’s a resounding yes; but it’s worth planning for if you don’t spring for $100 hoodies often.
The Hoody and Jacket Together
The Responder Jacket doesn’t come with a hood, but it pairs with the Responder Hoody for a layered look. The jacket also features hook and loop on the front to add a nametape. (Photo: Jacki Billings/Guns.com)
While the Responder Jacket and Hoody are able to be worn separate of each other, their strength lies in their partnership. Like Batman and Robin, the hoody and jacket pair to create a cool looking team. The gray of the hoody offsets the black in the jacket, creating an urban look with functionality.
Even better, the combination offers a warmer solution for cooler days and the layered look grants users the ability to peel off the jacket should temperatures rise. If you’re a pocket lover like me, the ability to stow a purse worth’s amount of extra gear in the hoody and jacket pockets filled me with delight.
Final Thoughts
Amabilis’ pairing of the Responder Tactical Jacket and Hoody spawns an understated tactical look that is both functional and fashion-forward. The black jacket and grey hoody create a “cool kid” vibe that is somewhat modular in the ability to transform from stand-alone outerwear to a layered unit. Though Amabilis’ apparel isn’t exactly on the cheap side, the Responder series is well worth the sticker price for the comfort and function. The women’s Responder Tactical jacket is priced at $279 while the Responder Hoody features a MSRP of $110.

Parasites may not be popular, but they are successful. Every organism has at least one parasite that thrives on it — or in it. They make up the majority of species on the planet and can be animals, crustaceans, insects, bacteria or plants, and some parasites even have parasites of their own. There 10 are the weirdest, and that’s a tough title to claim.
#1 Naegleria fowleri Viewed through a microscope, this amoeba looks like an evil clown dreamed up by Stephen King on mescaline. It’s sometimes referred to as the brain eating amoeba, which does nothing to enhance its lovability. It’s found in freshwater rivers and lakes, and it infects swimmers by entering the nose and traveling to the brain. Although millions of people are exposed to the amoeba each year, only a few of them ever get sick. But those that do soon find themselves in serious trouble — within days of exposure they’ll be suffering from fever, seizures, loss of balance and hallucinations. By this stage it is already too late for effective treatment, and death will typically follow. So never let anything into your nose, ever.
#2 Cymothoa exigua This nightmare inducing parasite belongs to the same family as lobsters and crabs. Having found a suitable victim, most often a red snapper, the parasite makes itself at home in the fish’s gills until it reaches maturity. This is bad news for the host, as the little beastie then makes its way to the snapper’s mouth, where it bites into the tongue and drains it of blood. The tongue withers and dies, leaving the parasite in its place. It doesn’t make for a pretty sight, but the host fish doesn’t seem to be too inconvenienced by the presence of their unwanted guest. The Cymothoa exigua is unique in being the only organism known to replace an entire organ on their host. Thankfully they’re not harmful to humans outside of a weird horror movie about them, although they can bite if handled while alive. The fish they co-exist with are eaten by humans, so every now and then they end up on somebody’s dinner plate. We wouldn’t recommend eating them.
#3 Cochliomyia Also known as the screw-worm fly, this unpleasant character most often infects livestock and pets. However, they do infect humans from time to time, so there’s always an outside chance that you’ll be treated to a personal encounter. Their modus operandi is for an adult fly to lay its larvae in an open wound. The larvae hatch into maggots, which soon begin their business of chewing into the host’s flesh. Most species of maggot will only eat dead flesh, which is why they can be so useful in medicine. But the screw-worm has no such scruples — it will chomp right through previously healthy flesh, causing horrible wounds. To make things even more terrifying, the maggots have toxic saliva that causes infections and produces foul smelling puss. Left untreated, the host will sicken and often die. This is of no concern to the screw-worm, which by this time will have grown into a rather sinister looking adult fly and be off looking to perpetuate the gruesome cycle. Where’s the horror movie about these monsters?
#4 Toxoplasma gondii Up to a third of the planet’s human population may be infected by this single celled parasite, although as a healthy immune system is able to keep it in check most of those afflicted will have no serious issues. The outlook for an infected mouse isn’t so hot. The parasite not only removes a rodents’ natural fear of cats, but actually triggers a fatal attraction towards all things feline. Incredibly, it’s able to alter the brain structure of its rodent host and compel it to all but serve itself up on a platter for the local neighborhood tom. This is bad news for the mouse but great news for the parasite, which is only capable of reproducing in a cat’s guts. There are actually several examples of parasites that are able to modify their host’s behavior, although none of the others are looking to get laid in a cat’s large intestine. Just be thankful that we don’t have that extra step in our reproductive cycle.
#5 Filarial Worms These tiny parasites are spread by mosquito bites and affect 120 million people in tropical and subtropical climates. These human specific parasites are only able to survive in our lymph system, but while the majority of those infected will never develop clinical symptoms a few aren’t so fortunate. Although the worms are microscopic, they can do horrendous damage. Typical symptoms include horrific swelling of the limbs and testicles. The condition, often referred to as elephantiasis, is painful, debilitating and highly visible.
#6 Megalomyrmex symmetochus Megalomyrmex are a species of South American ant with a tough-guy attitude. Considered a social parasite like your friend who keeps crashing on your couch and eating all your food, megalomyrmex infiltrate entire colonies rather than individuals. Their targets are a peaceful fungus farming species of ants called Sericomyrmex amabilis. The megalomyrmex are built for battle and usually have little difficulty in killing their way inside and taking over. The s.amabilis’ queen’s wings are clipped, and she suffers the indignity of being forced to undertake the tasks of a common worker. Meanwhile, the Megalomyrmex eat their host’s food and live the high life, in so far as that’s possible for ants, while their hosts do the bulk of the work. This all sounds like something of a raw deal for the host colony. However, the presence of their ill-mannered guests does bring benefits. A third species of ant, the aggressive Gnamptogenys hartmani, will attack and usurp colonies of the s.amabilis. The latter make for poor soldiers, with their battlefield tactics consisting mostly of running away or pretending to be dead. The megalomyrmex aren’t such easy foes to subdue, and they fight back fiercely. The parasitic ants even have a chemical weapon in the form of a venom which they can disperse in aerosol form. This confuses the attacker’s ability to determine friend from foe, causing the invading army to lose cohesion and even attack each other. Even the presence of a few megalomyrmex can be enough to turn the tide of battle, so if they’re going to be around you might as well have them on your side.
#7 Loa loa Endemic in some parts of Africa, the Loa loa gets into its human hosts through the bites of mango flies. The bite itself hurts, as the fly rips through skin to get to the blood, but the parasite itself is even worse. The worm, which can grow up to 20cm long, causes intense pain by wriggling around under the skin. Disturbingly, they can sometimes be seen migrating through the white portion of the eye, hence the nickname eye worm. Symptoms include itching, swellings, fatigue, joint pain, kidney disease and retina damage. The worm can be removed through surgery, but their larvae may still remain in the blood.
#8 Cuscuta Like something out of Day of the Triffids, the Cuscuta, also known as the dodder, is a parasitic plant that feeds on other plants. Having no chlorophyll, it cannot make its own food and relies entirely on its host for survival. The plant bears a striking resemblance to spaghetti, and once it sprouts from the ground it begins to search around for a suitable host. If it fails to accomplish this within a few days it will die, which it a pretty tough task to be assigned at birth. Assuming it’s successful, the dodder detaches itself from the ground and winds itself around the host’s stem. Surviving by drawing nutrients from the host, the dodder is even capable of moving from plant to plant and letting them handle the bothersome business of photosynthesis.
#9 Taenia solium This tapeworm is a well-known parasite that typically makes itself at home in the intestines of humans and other mammals. What many people don’t know is that it’s also possible for the tapeworm larvae to invade our brains. A person can only get tapeworms through eating infected and under-cooked meat. If this happens the tapeworm will set up base in the intestines and get busy laying thousands of eggs, which are excreted in feces. Any eggs that find their way back into a pig will complete its life cycle and hatch into a tapeworm. Sometimes, particularly in areas of the world with poor sanitation, the eggs will be consumed by a human. In this case the parasite won’t die, but neither will it be able to develop beyond its larval form. Typically the larvae will become lodged in the brain, where it produces a chemical that prevents the body’s immune system from detecting its presence. In the short term this usually isn’t disastrous, and an infected person might go for years without complications or even an inkling that their brain has been invaded. However, when the larvae finally die they stop producing their stealth chemical. The body’s defences go on the attack, and this causes the brain to swell. The result is devastating — seizures, paralysis, loss of speech and even death may follow. This particular form of the parasite is disturbingly widespread, and the World Health Organization estimates that as many as fifty million people worldwide may be affected.
#10 Hymenoepimecis argyraphaga Plesiometa argyra is a species of spider that can be found in Costa Rica, where it spends its days hanging out on its web, snacking on insects and doing other spider stuff. But one particular insect, a parasitic wasp known as Hymenoepimecis argyraphaga, has the ability to turn the tables in a disturbing fashion. The wasp stings the spider and paralyzes it so she can lay an egg on its abdomen. The spider soon recovers, but its troubles are only just beginning. The wasp larvae feeds on spider blood as the unsuspecting host goes about its business. After a few weeks the larvae needs a cocoon in a nice safe place, and the spider is going to provide it. The larvae injects a chemical into the spider, which alters its behavior in a very specific way. It begins to build a web unlike any it’s built before — a small, heavily reinforced web that will hold the weight of a cocoon. With the work completed the wasp larvae kills the spider, sucks out any remaining juicy bits, and settles into a cocoon in the center of its custom built web. Soon it will hatch, and the gruesome process begins all over again. Isn’t nature beautiful?
