The Buckley Siblings & Buckley Parents: Season 7

Maddie's getting married and Buck’s going to be in the wedding but... don't forget Margaret and Phillip will return to L.A. to attend.

Why is this important?

It's important because EVERY TIME the Buckley parents go to L.A., they're only there because Maddie invited them and EVERY TIME things don't go well for Buck.

Before I get started, I need to preface this for all the people who are going to say, "I thought Maddie's and Chimney's wEdDinG was sUpPoSEd to be about them"; it will be but please remember Buck is Maddie's brother and EVERY TIME the Buckley parents were in Los Angeles, Chimney was there with Maddie and Buck and he witnesssed those $hitshows in person. Also, this post is about the Buckley siblings and their parents and how things always unfold when they show up.

Let's stroll down 9-1-1 memory lane for a minute shall we...

Season 4 - they traveled to L.A. because Maddie was pregnant.

In 4x4, Maddie was pregnant with Jee-Yun and after Buck returned from Austin, TX, she told him that she invited their parents because she wanted her daughter to have a normal family with grandparents who would be involved in her life. But Buck told her she should have gotten knocked up by a guy who had one of those. She responded she was willing to try and after some convincing, he agreed to try too.

Here are the Buckley's arriving at Chimney's and Maddie's apartment and please look at Margaret's face. It's evident she didn't want to be there. They had dinner but it was awkward, especially since Maddie told their parents about Buck being in therapy.

Their second dinner turned into a $hitshow of epic proportions after they gave Maddie a baby box but they didn't have one for Buck.

Before I move on, please take a look at how Margaret scowled at Buck. Her face was filled with a look of digust. I wonder why that is🤔?

Their argument ended with Buck begging them to love him anyway.

At the end of 4x4, Maddie finally told Buck about Daniel and their conversation continued into 4x5.

In 4x5, after Maddie revealed the truth about Daniel's Juvenile Leukemia, Buck was devastated and he stopped talking to her.

Also, he told the 118 he was used for his "defective parts".

At the end of the episode, Buck apologized to them for not being able to save his brother but the audience didn't see them ask him to forgive them and IMO, that was on purpose.

When he arrived at Maddie's and Chimney's he looked like he was all alone. But they talked and made up.

Season 6 - they traveled to L.A. to see Maddie's new house.

In 6x10, Maddie told Josh her parents wanted to see their new house even though it wasn't finished being renovated but reminder, Margaret and Phillip loaned them the money for their down payment and that's why they wanted to see it. (Actually, they wanted to see Jee-Yun but they used the house as an excuse.)

Before Buck, Maragret and Phillip arrived, Maddie said to Chimney, "You're right. We have nothing to worry about. It's not like anybody's going to drop any deep dark family secrets this time". 👀

There has to be a secret, otherwise she wouldn't have said that.

After Buck picked them up from the airport, they only talked about the weather and after they arrived, Maddie went to get Jee-Yun and brought her into the living room. In the photo above, Buck's in the background and even though Maddie's in the foreground, she's partially in the dark about whatever secret Margaret and Phillip are keeping from both of them.

When Margaret saw the sonogram on Buck’s phone, the look on her face was one of disbelief NOT SHOCK.

It was almost like they COULDN'T BELIEVE BUCK GOT SOMEONE PREGNANT. 👀

While they were there, Buck got struck by lightning.

And he died for three minutes and seventeen seconds.

Season 7 - They'll be in L.A. for the third time but it still won't be for Buck because they're going to Maddie's wedding.

It's likely they will be at the hospital to visit Chimney but what kind of chaos will ensue this time since EVERY TIME THEY SHOW UP, SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS TO BUCK?

Reminder, they only go to L.A. when it's for Maddie, i.e., her pregnancy, her new house and in season 7 it will be for her wedding. For whatever reason, in 4x4 they only had a baby box for Maddie 👀. And remember before they leave, something bad ALWAYS happens to Buck.

I have an idea of what might happen and why it will. My theory has EVERYTHING TO DO WITH BUCK’S BIRTH AND THE SPERM DONATION HE DID FOR CONNOR AND KAMERON. (But I'm still debating if I will post it. If I do, I'll post it before the season begins.)

I'm sorry I just can't read fic that does Buckley parents redemption. I know it is canon. But I have a huge issue with tv shows pushing the reconciliation with abusive parents. And the Buckley parents were emotionally abusive.

Buck has ADHD- the writers could come knocking on my door and tell me that he’s not and I still would argue with them with a PowerPoint and everything

More on that: the insistence of a show that is so deeply rooted in the concept of found family to constantly give shitty parents redemption arcs is so irritating

Maddie Buckley didn’t raise buck since she was 9 years old while dealing with her own trauma or give him her jeep and money (AKA HER LITERAL SAFETY NET TO ESCAPE HER ABUSER) just so people can sit there and call her a bad sister -I’m a Maddie Buckley defender and I stand by that

Both sides were flawed with the lawsuit thing and neither should be too harshly judged- Bobby kept buck out when buck already proved himself but he was doing it out of protectiveness in his own flawed way because let’s be honest he just saw the guy he considers a son nearly die in front of him three times in one year and saw the PT and toll it all took through the whole process and keep in mind he’s already lost 2 kids already but buck also shouldn’t have sued impulsively or disclosed such intimate information and should’ve tried to take a more rational approach but let’s also be fair and remember this is the guy THAT DID GO THROUGH ALL THOSE THINGS IN THAT SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME like no one would be okay mentally, no one would be rational, not when you spend a shit ton of time to recover only to be told (in his brain at least) that it’s not enough from someone you not only consider as a mentor, friend and father figure but also the same person who was motivating you through your recovery

I actually hated the whole thing with Hen and the madney engagement like idk why the writing felt it was appropriate to try to compare Hen CHEATING (granted it was ooc and in season one) with Maddie suffering postpartum depression make it make sense- they could’ve had the same level of hen and chimney friendship moment/ hen looking out for him without doing this type of thing which just made me a little angry with hen while watching it but ultimately deciding this storyline doesnt exist in my brain

Buck saying multiple times that he doesn’t want a couch in the span of ten seconds and insisting that he likes his chair and the way his apartment is and then being steamrolled by Margaret anyway? that’s not a healthy parent-child relationship

things aren’t better or fixed just because they stuck around. they’re gonna keep being overbearing and controlling of his life. and his apartment is a metaphor for that. and I’m sick to my stomach about this being played off as starting to heal from all his childhood trauma.

Buck & Eddie: “You think…” & You’re not…” vs. “You act…”

People like Margaret, Buck’s mother and Taylor, ex-girlfriend #3, think they know Buck when in actuality, they don’t know anything about who he is as a person or about the things that trigger his insecurities.  His parents along with his ex-girlfriends thought they knew him based solely on how they assumed he felt about himself but the truth is none of them know Buck at all because they don’t know Evan. For anyone to know Buck, they have to know Evan since Buck is a persona Evan exhibits with the people who think he's a reckless, daredevil firefighter who doesn’t care if he lives or dies and who doesn’t think before he acts but those were all incorrect assumptions about him.  Maddie and Eddie are the only two people who truly know Buck.  Maddie is Buck’s sister while Eddie is his husband everything and they both know Evan is insecure about being left behind because he didn’t receive the emotional support he should have received from his parents when he was a child.  They also know that Evan hides behind his Buck persona to prevent people from seeing Evan, the insecure young man who just wants to be loved. Based on the comments Margaret and Taylor made to him, it’s clear they don’t know him because they always assumed he thought he was indestructible and invincible when he knows that he’s not but whenever he did reckless things, it was simply a cry for help.  Let’s review comments they made to him and compare them to some of the comments Eddie made to him to illustrate how Eddie knows and sees Buck/Evan. Please note: Margaret and Taylor are wearing the same color shirts when they are talking to Buck (red and purple) and the reason for that is Taylor treated him the same way his mother treats him (related post: “Evan “Buck” Buckley: HUSBAND vs. HIMBO”).

Margaret doesn’t know her son at all.  The comments she has made to him over the years were based on what she thought he believed about himself, hence her comment to him in 2012 about how he thought he was indestructible.  She was the first person to call him reckless and she believed he was being reckless just for show but he only acted like that so that he could get their attention.  After 29 years, his parents still didn’t know him and that was proven when they visited L.A. in 4x4 “9-1-1 What’s Your Grievance?”

Some of the comments she’s made to him are listed below:

“Oh, don’t be stupid Evan...”.

“You’re reckless!”

“You do dangerous things without giving them a second thought.”

“You think you’re indestructible but you’re not!”

Taylor never knew who Buck was even though they met more than two years before they started dating at the end of season 4.  She told him that he wasn’t invincible but when she said it, she assumed he believed it was true but that was so far from his truth that he barely responded to her comment.  The way she talked at him instead of to him proved that she didn’t know him at all and it also illustrated how she never had any intentions of getting to know him especially since she was still talking at him when he broke up with her in 5x18 “Starting Over” when she said, “I’m sorry you’re still upset about the story”. Why Buck ever thought it was a good idea to date her is beyond comprehension but he tends to overcorrect by being emotionally reckless which explains some of his actions regarding their relationship, especially the clinging (related post: “Buck 1.5 is Emotionally Reckless”).

Some of the comments she’s made to him are listed below:  

“God, you’re so needy.”

“You just can’t stand the idea of someone not liking you!”

“You’re not made of Kev!@r d*mb*$$.”  

“I’m annoyed with you. “You’re not invincible.”

Eddie not only sees Buck but he also knows Evan and he can instantly recognize when Buck reverts to Evan during their conversations.  He understands that even though Buck “acts” like he’s expendable, hence the way he phrased his comment during The Will Reveal in 4x14 “Survivors”, he knows it’s just that, an ACT! Eddie knows Buck doesn’t want to die and that he only exhibits reckless tendencies to get attention.  He also knows Buck’s biggest fear is that he’ll end up dying alone without a family but Eddie took care of that in 3x15 “Eddie Begins” after he changed his will and named Buck to be Christopher’s legal guardian. Eddie realized during their first shift together in 2x1 “Under Pressure” that Buck was insecure and instead of continuing to feed his insecurities with more negativity, Eddie simply complimented him on a job well done and that caused Buck to immediately feel seen by Eddie.  Even when Eddie must have a difficult conversation with Buck regarding his actions, he doesn’t demean him or talk down to him, he uses positivity to encourage Buck and to help him understand that he’s not in it alone because he’s a part of Eddie’s and Christopher’s family and he’s also included in the 118′s found family. Additionally he will ask Buck a question while they are talking so that Buck will consider his options before jumping to a negative conclusion. He helps Buck to see things from a different perspective instead of telling him the answers or assuming that he knows what Buck is thinking which is the exact opposite of the way his mother and his ex-girlfriends handled difficult conversations with Buck. Over the years Eddie has continued to see Evan and he knows how to talk to Buck and that’s because Eddie takes care of him (related post: “Eddie takes care of Buck”).

Some of the comments Eddie’s made to Buck are listed below:

“You’re b*d*$$ under pressure brother!”

“Stop feeling sorry for yourself!”

“And what, you think you failed? I failed that kid more times than I care to count and I’m his father. But I love him enough to never stop trying, and I know you do too!”

“Your actions. Your choices. They impact the rest of us. That’s what it means to be a part of a team”.

“That’s not on you!”

“You act like you’re expendable…but you’re wrong.”

“You’re the guy who likes to fix things.”

“Fix it?... Hey! It comes in handy when you have a bunch of holes in your wall.”

“What are you offering?”

“Maybe that’s how Bobby feels about interim captain.”
