Day one of the con is done. Met the coolest people - some for the first time, some for the second. Jason Liebrecht called me sweetheart like 5 times and told me that he loved my Dabi art while he signed it 🥹

Zach Aguilar is just as sweet as Tanjiro is, so is Chris Wehkamp. J Michael Tatum and I had a great talk about how incredible Erwin and Scar are as characters, and Austin Tindle and I agreed that Knives did nothing wrong. I love them all. More cool people to come tomorrow.

okay okay, I really like Knives’ english dub! the actor has a very similar timbre and ambiguously-young quality that JYB has always had, so it really sells them as twins. one thing I always loved about ye olde Trigun dub was that none of the male characters were overly gruff or gravelly - there’s this auditorily unpleasant (to me) trend of main masculine characters (protag and antag both) needing to be a bass or deep baritone to project ~manliness~ I guess. 98 Trigun’s cast was mostly very expressive tenors and light baritones. tristamp seems to be leaning similarly, but I wait with bated breath for what they do with Wolfwood :/

What an utterly exhausting day, but a fantastic one nonetheless. I got to meet a few of the coolest English VAs in the industry. Johnny Yong Bosch (Tomioka, Sasori, Vash), Austin Tindle (Kaneki, Monoma, Knives), Landon McDonald (Enmu, Kamo, Kazuki), and Tony Oliver (Minato) to name a few.

Austin Tindle surprised me by being the sweetest and the funniest dude ever, and he noticed that I was in the audience at his Q&A panel before I met him 😭😭😭

All For The Bit

okay so, bear with me here

When Trigun came into the world the typical shonen protagonist was the loudmouth cheery guy who shouted a lot about friendship, generally had a lot of feelings and wasn't too bright but they had HEART

And this was kind of Vash's Bit in the manga and '98 anime. This is the role he presented himself in. Not an entirely false personality, often exaggerating his own traits, but still a deliberate choice. He's modeled after the harmless, nonthreatening Loudmouth.

Now we come to present day. Now the prevalent shonen protag tends to be The Wimp. Soft-spoken, the ultimate doormat, essentially decent and kind but weak-willed. Earnest, but no one takes them seriously. Eager to please. Belittles themself.

Vash has updated The Bit. He now presents himself as The Wimp because that is the common type of protagonist in recent times. That is the type of protagonist viewers will be most familiar with. He's not like 90s Vash because he is 20s Vash, he's this generation's Vash.

I have no idea if Orange did this deliberately but I think it's cool. It's a new show made by a new generation of creators who want to tell new stories about characters they love.
