Also ok I need to sleep but deadloch is such a good satire also. Like I’ve watched some cop shows, and holy shit it flips every aspect over. The obvious one is that it’s women leading and men getting murdered instead of the other way around, but the one I find the most interesting and most important, is that it takes the “few bad apples”, as well as the “ends justify the means” shit, and completely flips it. Like. Ok. B99 is a cop show. It’s a “progressive” cop show, that sort of tries? To have some messaging about bad policing, but it still falls into the issue of the messages being: “most cops are fine it’s just that some cops are racist! But we can just get them fired so it’s ok” and “it’s necessary for cops to break the law and do morally questionable things to solve a case, and they risk getting fired for it so it’s brave”

Meanwhile even with a progressive show like b99, it still fits into the box of what deadloch is parodying. Like the core messages of deadloch are the opposite of what I listed above. Like we have: “the system is rotten, corrupt, and the few good cops are getting pushed out because cops are actively discouraged from being good” and “the bravest thing an officer can do is follow the law and treat people with human decency”

Like idk what else to say it’s just really good. It’s a really good satire. I went in with low expectations (bc I didn’t realize it was going to be a satire) but like. Yeah It’s really really well done.

Speaking as someone who does enjoy a few cop/law enforcement shows (Specifically Criminal Minds, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Flashback, and occasionally Bones) if you’re going to consume that type of media, you need to be careful and and always question what’s being portrayed on screen. If you can’t separate fiction from reality or recognize why and how what you’re watching is copaganda, you should not be watching those shows.

which was a show I used to watch and enjoyed at the time but I think if I watched it now I would feel vaguely annoyed for most of it

idk why that specific kind of humour -- I can't even describe what it is, I can only describe it by reference -- just falls so flat for me now but it's that kind and any kind of what I've seen called "Netflix humour" (which B99 also kind of has sometimes but was explicitly exemplified in that raging flop of a show Blockbuster) that makes me want to do whatever the opposite of laugh is

(I think Superstore could have fallen into this trap too but somehow it didn't and that was a miracle. it kinda just. tapdanced around the edge of the trap lol)

If I can be honest with you—really, sincerely honest with you—I care much more about How people are engaging with art than what art they are engaging with. I can try and get into the moralizing tango with you of what exactly makes something ethically okay to watch, but, truly, if someone is actively recognizing the qualities & ideologies of a piece of art, critically examining the impact of those qualities/ideologies, and making personal judgements on them based on their understanding, I am much happier than if people like everything I like and hate everything I hate. Critical discourse will always be more productive than labeling a piece of art as “morally irredeemable” or whatever.
