National Taco Day

Have a taco party with friends, go to a Mexican restaurant, or hit up a taco stand for one of the world’s most beloved and time-honored cuisines.

Tacos are the Mexican equivalent of a sandwich. Instead of bread, a hard or soft tortilla is wrapped or folded around a spicy filling. But, also, in essence, these little folded pockets of goodness are so much more than just a sandwich!

History of National Taco Day

It is not known exactly when this tasty food originated, but tacos themselves seem to have been around for a long time. They were first referenced by their current name at the end of the 19th century, but the conquistador Cortez mentioned a meal prepared with tortillas as far back as 1520!

Back in those days, this would have been referring to a type of soft wheat or corn tortillas. Hard taco shells are a much more recent innovation. Of course, as Americans got their hands on this delicious food, it has evolved, morphed, and grown into something that is less of a food and more of an institution! And that’s why National Taco Day was created. To celebrate the grand institution of the taco.

Enjoying National Taco Day is super easy with all kinds of options that involve making, eating and celebrating everything that has to do with the taco! Try these ideas out for inspiration:

Go Out to a Mexican Restaurant

And this isn’t referring to Taco Bell. On this day, it is important to find the most authentic, genuinely Mexican establishment possible. Preferably this will be a locally owned and operated restaurant, hopefully with a cook who truly has some Mexican roots!

The tacos at a truly authentic Mexican restaurant will be different from what might be found at an Americanized joint. These genuine tacos will be made with soft corn tortillas (not deep-fried or baked) that are filled with meat.

The meat options will typically be “pollo”, which is chicken, “pastor” which is pork, or “barbacoa” which is usually made with beef. No ground beef here! The meat will have been slow-cooked to perfection in spices that bring the flavor all throughout.

Searing bright circle of light now neon upon stared night. Astral glazed doughnut slice descends as denizens still bite.

From otherworldly orifice temptatious tractor beam (tasty as fried batter bits) faux bucket of KFC.

Customers start to stir from chow, in lapse of rashy disgust Searching now for slothful cow, "marbling means more dust."

Every so often I remember that Bob is canonically the type of guy who eats fast food for dinner pretty much all the time and it's such a funny character trait for him to have imo. Originally it felt kind of out of left field but after I thought about it it is 100% accurate. He's just like a big energetic kid, of course he eats fast food for dinner all the time. That guy is NOT cooking or going out to eat alone.

Alright this is probably my favorite ask I've gotten in a while. Full disclosure I rarely eat fast food so I'm going solely off of vibes here

Roland: Gives me McDonald's/Burger King manager energy (except he's a good dude and not like a shitty manager) ((we love roland))

Lilith: Honestly? I could see Lilith working at like Panera. If that doesn't count as fast food probably like... Pizza Hut.

Brick: You already know my man works at Burger King. He wears the crown.

Mordecai: Definitely like a pizza hut or domino's type of guy. Tired and doesn't get paid enough (no fast food worker does)

Axton: you know that one drive thru worker who would sing the McDonald's theme and everyone loved him? That's Axton.

Maya: Maya would probably find herself working at Starbucks. I could absolutely see her being a fantastic barista and calling anyone who whined about her order a bitch. Also she'd look good in the apron...

Zer0: Works at Five Guys, also does the "Back at it again at Krispy Kreme" Vine thing every shift. Worked at Subway, got fired because they'd make people speak in haiku to order their sandwiches.

Salvador: Wendy's man. Surprisingly, tame at work. I could also see him as a Dunkin Donuts worker.

Gaige: If Gaige was forced to work fast food she'd probably get a McDonald's job and do the "overly nice but obviously sarcastic" voice to everyone until she snapped and got fired. Also probably dips her metal hand in the grease traps to slap a bitch.

Krieg: "THE LITTLE MAN LOVES THAT CHICKEN FROM POPEYE'S!" also employee of the month.

Athena: Canonically was very desperate for work so probably any of them but I think the funniest thing I can think of is Athena being one of those stone-cold McDonald's managers that have to constantly deal with shitty customers. I could also totally see her being a Chipotle worker and wrapping her burritos way too tightly out of aggression.

Nisha: I don't know if Texas Roadhouse counts but if it doesn't she'd definitely be working at a Pizza Hut. Hates her job.

Wilhelm: Disgruntled Burger King worker. (This ask was in response to the post I made about him)

Claptrap: Honestly, I could see Claptrap at any fast food restaurant but thinking of Claptrap as a sign spinner for like... Taco Bell seems perfect. KFC is also an option (props if you get this)

Timothy: Again, would work any kind of job for money, but I want to say he'd fit into like a Sonic or something.

Aurelia: As per the ask, would not go within 500 feet of a fast food restaurant. Prestigious food critic, total bitch about it. (I really love Aurelia I promise)

FL4K: Gives me Burger King energy because I think it'd be hilarious to see them wearing the crown. Also because I want to hear SungWon Cho (FL4K's VA) say "Your whopper is ready."

Zane: Banned from all fast food restaurants for public inebriation. Was formerly employed at Panda Express.

Moze: You know my girl is a Taco Bell employee. Drinks exclusively Baja Blast mixed with monster. Constantly making suggestions to people about what's good on the menu. Somehow doesn't put on any weight even when her diet is solely Taco Bell for like a month.

Amara: You know Amara would ideally want to work at one of those muscle bars, but as for fast food? I want to say she'd work at Arby's because she finds the commercials funny. That or Chipotle.

CWS (crunch wrap supreme) and a diet BB (Baja blast) OR. NBG (nacho bell grande). Needless to say these are always meals so the side taco can sustain me later in the day. I’m also partial to the cheesy gordita crunch, the number 7 chicken quesadilla, and ofc when they’re available 😒 nacho fries or the bowl. Personally I think chalupas and Doritos locos tacos are overrated but I’ll eat them. Also love their nasty little Cinnabon bites. As Trisha (I know it was Louis ck but I prefer to attribute Trisha) paytas once said, they truly are gross little fat faggot treats what with the cumshot sauce and all that
