The Blanched Soldier makes me so sad because it is so obvious that Holmes is pining for Watson, who is married at the time of the story. Holmes starts off writing that he doesn’t let Watson come along with him for any emotional reason, it’s purely logical, obviously: “...if I burden myself with a companion in my various little inquiries it is not done out of sentiment or caprice, but it is that Watson has some remarkable characteristics of his own, to which in his modesty he has given small attention amid his exaggerated estimates of my own performances.” Sure. Whatever you say, Holmes.

I’d be more inclined to believe Holmes if he didn’t follow this up with “The good Watson had at that time deserted me for a wife, the only selfish action which I can recall in our association. I was alone.”, in the next paragraph. Like. I can’t get over this. First of all, Watson’s marriage being the only selfish thing Holmes can recall Watson doing in their many years of friendship. Okay. Gay. Secondly, that “I was alone.” is it’s own sentence haunts me and makes me so sad, it’s heartbreaking! To me it feels as though Holmes is trying to deny the weight and strength of his own feelings when he says he doesn’t let Watson tag along out of any “sentiment or caprice” like okay babe, whatever helps you cope <3 We’ve all read that three garridebs quote, we know you love him.

And then, later on in the story Holmes says “And here it is that I miss my Watson.” My Watson. *deep sigh* The Blanched Soldier is just. So depressing. Also the story itself is about the reunion of two soldiers and it is heavily implied (I believe intentionally by ACD) that they are lovers. I can’t help but feel Holmes is further saddened that he and Watson can’t be together like the two soldiers he helps reunite. Anyway I will be going to lie down and scream now. I’ve been thinking about this for the past six days and now I’ve finally put my thoughts in a post.

Sometimes I remember that the Blanched Soldier is just a story about two lads who met in the army and are now being kept apart by the dad of one of them on pretenses of some undefined illness and that Sherlock (while lamenting the lack of his Watson) arrives to tell the dad (discretely) that he knows what he is doing so can he kindly let the lads be together, thanks.

I love this story so very much because it is the equivalent of someone writing something personal and sensitive in a diary and putting “do not read. nothing to see here” on the cover. Both in the doylist and watsonian perspective, even.

Holmes is like, “alas, my prose is boring” but he still tells the story and Doyle is like “it’s just about a fake illness I promise” and I really want to write an actual entire analysis of this story at some point because there is So Much going on.

The Blanched Soldier. AKA: that time where Holmes wrote a story from the inside of his closet and filled it with passive aggressive gay frustration towards Watson... his amazing, underrated helpmate* who's only selfish action was deserting Holmes for a wife.

Oh, and then Holmes proceeds to impress a "big, fresh, sunburned" soldier with some crackshot deductions that highlight Holmes's textbook knowledge of military culture, runs off to have a gay adventure, and finally reunites the soldier with his gay lover that had been forcibly separated from him by their father/Commanding Officer.

All alone and without his dear Boswell.

"And here it is that I miss my Watson. By cunning questions and ejaculations of wonder he could elevate my simple art, which is but systematized common sense, into a prodigy."

* Let's take note that the word "helpmate" is only used 2 other times in canon, and both are by Holmes and referring to a female lover/wife. The word has a general context of being applied to a spouse, and Holmes tends to use it in this manner.

In blanched soldier, a young man goes to Holmes because his friend (though it is heavily implied that they are lovers) is missing and his family are being weird about it and he wants to get him back. He is also told that is friend is off travelling or something. The gist is, his lover isn’t gone, it has a happy ending, they can be together again, nice.

In this story, Holmes is lamenting the fact that Watson can’t be with him, claims that the only selfish thing Watson did was get married, and also positions watson as a lifelong partner similar to that of a husband or wife (refers to Watson as a helpmate or something I think). I think Holmes also reflects a lot on romance and the romanticisation of stories? I can’t quite remember and I don’t really have the time to reread it at the moment sadly. Oh also throughout it I recall that he makes several remarks about Watson being missing or what watson would do if he were present (in addition to what I just said).

The main reason I said “in this story out of all stories” is that I also think that Holmes, who I see as gay, sees these two young men, recognises that they are in love, and wishes that he and Watson could be together too, except that can’t be because Watson has a wife (which, remember, Holmes is quite upset about, not just in this story but also in others. He derides the concept of marriage a lot too which I think is a defence mechanism rather than any actual belief of his). So yeah I just think this whole story is Holmes seeing two men living the life he wants but he can’t have. Basically holmes is sad and feels his love is unrequited. It makes me sad :( maybe I’m reading too much into it but idc, I’m gay and if I want to read too much into something I can
