Reality TV scandal sparks discussion about groping law in Brazil

A recent scandal on one of Brazil’s largest reality television shows has sparked new discussion surrounding the crime of groping, which was codified into law in 2018 and involves libidinous acts without consent, such as inappropriate touching and forced kissing, but that differs from sexual harassment.

On March 16, Brazilian mixed martial arts star Antonio Carlos Junior and Brazilian funk singer MC Guime were kicked off of Globo TV’s Big Brother Brazil for allegedly groping Mexican model Dania Mendez during a party. Carlos Junior is accused of forcibly kissing the woman, and MC Guime is accused of touching her rear end. Both have publicly apologized and are cooperating with police.

The scandal brought new attention to the crime, which experts say is more prevalent in recent years.

According to the Brazilian Public Security Forum, an NGO that gathers data on crime in the country, two complaints of groping are reported every hour in Brazil. The latest data show that the number of complaints of groping per year have increased, rising from 13,576 in 2019, to 16,190 in 2020, and 19,209 in 2021, the last year with available data.

And according to the National Council of Justice, a public institution that monitors Brazil’s justice system, the legal system receives 13 new cases of groping per day, and between January and July of 2022, there were 2,886 new cases opened for the crime of groping.

dean prefers to be liked and sam prefers to be right

dean is very much a people pleaser in his younger years and as the show goes on he gets quite domineering (imo) but i still think he would drop any argument if someone he loved was threatening to fall out (abandon him) about it

sam, however, likes to be right! especially in that youngest sibling way that he was smaller and weaker for so long so all he had was knowing more and you can still tell how pleased he gets to get one up on dean

i think sam maintains that in the later seasons as well, even though he tries to maintain the peace a bit more (aka has been completely beaten down by his life), he just has a bit more sense to pick his battles. young sam was going into every argument with the same ferocity lol

also sorry it took me forever to reply i had a 10 hour shift today. gonna go cry about it for several hours!! :(

Luci going to Afonso when he's depressed is a great prompt but how about the opposite?

Luciano overworked and tired because this year has both world cup and elections and he hears a knocking on the door and he sees Afonso will just a bag. And he's about to tell him to go home because he already assumes the old man is there for that goddamn heart and he doesn't trust Luci with it but Afonso looks so depressed, more melancholic than usual. Luci for a moment forget all his work and drags him inside for some coffee while asking what's wrong

Afonso is the kind of person who hides his depression, so if he goes to Luci something must be really wrong and he's running away.

I don't think he would want to explain what is wrong to Luciano, he's scared of being seen as weak and pathetic, so he apologises for coming and asks if he can just rest for a little while. He feels very tired and hasn't been sleeping for the last few weeks.

"Oh... you're busy. I'm sorry. I'll go to an hotel."

Of course, Luci doesn't let him go to a hotel and he lets him sleep on the couch. He tries to get him to talk but Afonso constantly changes the subject. He spends the next few days either sleeping or looking at nothing.

The only thing Luciano finds is a crumpled invitation from Antonio to a party celebrating his new business deal.

Afonso just feels so tired. He worked on a new business for months, trying to get a big company to work with him and everything seemed to be going well, but in the end, they chose Antonio.

Afonso knows it's petty and childish and that he should be happy for his brother but he just... isn't. He feels sad, angry, and so, so tired.

I know it's less a testament to how strong I am and more a testament to the fact that I wear my clothes until they turn to paper but this is the second time I've accidentally ripped a shirt while taking it off.

#life of dan #first time was a 30+ yr old button up that was my gdads #took off the sweater i was wearing over it and the shifting of my shoulders tore the back open #this time was a tank top that used to be my little brothers and is maybe 10 years old #went to pull it over my head and instead of the whole shirt coming with #i just tore a big hole in the back near the collar #i also wore holes in my shorts and my jeans #and my shoes soles have worn down to the point i can feel the heat of the gorund through them #though im going to try to hold on to those this whole trip #bc i have a spare set at home in brazil #i might have to go clothes shopping here because this is beginning to get problematic
