And At Last I See The Light (Demon Slayer)
Tumblr media
Why yes I absolutely referenced the Lantern scene from Tangled for this fic because it’s beautiful.
Heyo everyone! Thank you for everyone who voted in this past Obamitsu poll! I was prepared to drop some heavy angst on y’all, but fluff won in the end! This was absolutely fun to make, and I hope y’all like it!
Summary: Mitsuri asks Obanai out on a date. Fluff ensues.
Cloud 9 (Taglist peeps)
@myreygn, @thatbigbisexual29, @duckymcdoorknob, @wolfyeatstacos, @gladdygirl18, @baby-tickles2022, @cupcake-spice13
“Iguro-san! Will you…will you go on a date with me?” Mitsuri’s voice shook, but her words were strong. For a moment, Obanai barely processed what was just asked. Instead, he stared at the Love Hashira, taking in her flushed cheeks and shaking hands- still clutching a basket of what he imagined to be homemade treats.
A date…
A date.
A DATE! Obanai’s brain short-circuited.
“If it’s not too much trouble- I know you’re probably busy, but I figured I’d ask. Of course- if you don’t want to…” She shifted where she stood, growing nervous by the minute. Obanai shook himself out of his shock, clearing his throat.
“I’d…I think that would be wonderful, Kanroji.” He tried to make his voice steady, even if it shook like her. His face felt incredibly warm suddenly, growing hotter when she smiled, face lighting up like the sun. “Only if you’d have me.”
“I will! I’ll gladly have you! Do you have time now? If not, we can always do it tomorrow.” Her smile dropped then, eyes widening with guilt. “Wait…I have a mission tomorrow…and the next day. Ahh, these demons!”
Obanai felt his heart drop. He also had a mission today. Those small puffs of hope he felt blooming suddenly seem to pop. “Kanroji-”
“He’s free! No missions at all.” Tengen’s voice boomed over his own, shocking them both. The Sound Hashira walked up, Sanemi beside him. “In fact-look around; there’s cherry blossoms all around, the temperature’s nice; it’s a perfect afternoon for a date.” He grinned, slapping Obanai light on the back and making him stumble forward. “You two get going- we’ll handle any missions today.”
“Tengen-” Could they even do this? It wasn’t uncommon for other Hashira to insist they go with each other on missions, and Master Urokodaki wasn’t against giving them time off. Still…
“Don’t worry about it.” Sanemi’s voice was low as he whispered to Obanai, the other Hashira entertaining Mitsuri while they spoke. “I can talk to Master about the mission. It’s not a specialty- anyone can do it, and I’m free right now.”
“But, your day off-” Obanai went to argue, shutting up when Sanemi glared.
“I said, don’t worry about it. Besides- you’ve covered for me the other day. It’s only fair I cover for you.” Pink dusted Sanemi’s face, the unmentioned Water Hashira on his mind. It made Obanai smile, seeing his friend finally look so peaceful. “Thank you.” He bowed his head, getting a smile back.
With that, he turned back to Mitsuri, nearly melting at her radiance. “I’m ready when you are, Kanroji.”
“Have fun you two!” Tengen called as he and Sanemi headed out. “Use Prote-Ow! Don’t pinch me!” The pair’s arguing eventually faded out.
~~~
Side by side, they walked through a secluded area past town, the walkways lined with blooming flowers and the air smelling sweet. In the distance, Obanai could hear children laughing as they chased one another- their mother’s voices dancing with laughter as they cautioned them not to run too fast.
“This is one of my favorite places to be.” Mitsuri smiled as she took it all in, swinging the basket between them as she looked around. “When I have downtime between missions, I like to come here and sit with the locals. At first, they weren’t too interested in me. I think it’s my hair.” Her free hand reached up and tugged at one of her long braids, a note of insecurity entering her voice. “It’s not exactly a traditional color. But then, this one little kid- he ran up to me and said I looked like a Sakura tree! It was the cutest thing ever!” She laughed then, the sound like bells. “I think he really came up because he wanted one of the snacks I brought, but it made me feel good nonetheless.”
Obanai hummed softly, his eyes watching fondly as she waved at a nearby couple. If he were to be bold, he’d say he rather liked her hair. It looked so soft, and the pink brought out the green in her eyes. It might have been untraditional, but so were Rengoku golden mane and the purple tips along Shinobu’s bangs. Untraditional, but far from unappealing.
He went to say so before he was cut off, Mitsuri’s giddy voice winning out.
“Oh! Look, Iguro-san!” Her hand found his before he could react, pulling him along. “These are so fun! Come on!”
“R-Really?” He yelped, his nerves igniting under the touch of her hand. He let her guide him, weaving past trees and people until they stood on a long dock lined with small rowboats. The young man manning them seemed rather tired, but immediately perked up when his eyes found Misturi. Obanai hated him instantly.
“Hello! Could we get a boat for two?” Mitsuri asked as she dug for her coin purse, seeming oblivious to the way the man ogled her up and down, his smile wide. Kaburamaru hissed with displeasure, whether at the man or Obanai’s growing disgust he couldn’t tell. “The day’s perfect for a ride along the river!”
“It sure is. Tell you what- I can man the boat for you. I’m rather good with an Oar. Among other things.” He had the audacity to wink. WINK! Obanai nearly pulled out his blade.
Instead, he stepped forward, the boat ride fair in hand. “We’ll be fine.” His sharp tone made the man shrink back, reminding him of his presence. “This is what we owe you, yes?” Kaburamaru hissed again, an open threat.
“Y-Yes! Yes; please- enjoy the ride!” The young man backed away, too scared to offer Mitsuri a hand as she gleefully hopped into the rowboat. “Thanks, Iguro-san! You didn’t have to pay- I had it.” She smiled as he climbed in himself, giving the scared boy one last glare before turning a kinder gaze to Mitsuri.
“It’s quite alright. Now- shall we go?”
~~~
Turns out- rowing a boat was a lot harder than he expected.
Even as a Hashira with the strength to cut down demons, the oars were surprisingly heavy. Obanai tried to hide his labored breathing as he pulled and pushed the wooden tools, slowly drifting them along the stream. If Mitsuri noticed, she didn’t say. Instead she sat back beneath a shaded umbrella, her hands folded in her lap as she took in the sights around them. “Oh wow…look at all this…”
Wow was definitely a way to describe it. Even between the strenuous rowing, Obanai could make out the scene around him. Sakura lined the wide lake, the wind shaking their petals free and giving them life as they danced along the clear blue sky. They landed like lily pads in the water, parting with each dip of the oars as Obanai slowly guided them towards the center of the lake. The air smelled sweet, not the sickly thick kind Obanai grew up with, but light and comforting- like the goddess of spring was blowing dandelions at them from her perch.
“Oh, let’s stop here for a while. The view is wonderful.” Mitsuri sat up then, pulling her basket of snacks out as Obanai relaxed- secretly relieved to rest his muscles. She had offered to row, but Obanai had insisted he could do it. What kind of date would he be if he left her to do all that work?
“Tada! I packed a little bit of everything! Mochi, Dango, Origiri, Ohagi…” She read them off as she took out a multicolored Dango stick, leaning close and offering it to the Serpent before her. “Open wide!”
“W-What? Oh, you don’t have to do that-” He stammered, feeling his face heat up. He’d be lying if the thought of Mitsuri feeding him hadn’t crossed his mind, but that was compartmentalized into the “things that would never happen in real life” section of his brain.
Then again, so was going on a date with the loveliest girl he’s ever met.
Maybe that part of his brain needed to be renamed.
“After all that rowing? I’m sure your arms are sore. I don’t mind at all!” Mitsuri smiled sweetly as she held out the snack, waving it like a magic wand. “It’s packed full of my magic! The kind legend to have strengthened the mightiest of Hashria!”
“Hm, that’s some powerful magic.” He mused, making her laugh. Staring at the dango, he hesitated, reaching for his mask. His scar twitched against his lips, but it wasn’t as if she hadn’t seen it before. She never judged it then.
Taking a small breath, he pulled down his mask, shyly reaching out and taking a bite. Flavor exploded in his mouth, her snacks were always heavenly.
“Like it?” She asked, giggling when he hummed. With one hand still holding out the dango, she reached into the basket and pulled out a small opaque bag labeled ‘For Kaburamaru.’ Cracking it open, she offered it to the white snake. “I brought some for you too, Kabu! Oh- is it okay if I feed him too? I’ve packed some…well, you already know what it is.” She smiled sheepishly. “I packed it separately from everything else.”
“You remembered him.” Obanai felt his heart squeeze as he nodded. “Of course. Go on ahead, Kaburamaru. Eat up.” The snake didn’t need to be told twice. Sliding off his arm, it went right into the baggie, crawling under his seat as he devoured his treat.
“Of course! Can’t forget little Kabu!” Mitsuri offered the next dango as she took out another snack, nibbling on a sakura mochi. “He’s important to you, and you’re important to me.” She blushed then, as if surprised by her own words. “I-well. Yeah. Hehe.”
Obanai laughed around his dango, taking the stick as he finished off the last of it. “I appreciate that. Truly.” He pushed out the next words before they could stick in his throat. “You’re important to me too.” Her blush deepened, and for a moment he was scared she was gonna choke on her mochi. He could feel his own face flush at her wide eyes.
Then she smiled, something warm entering her gaze. “Thank you, Iguro-san.”
Call me Obanai was on the tip of his tongue. He shoved the rest of his dango in his mouth before it could come out.
~~~
Their boat ride eventually led to a small clearing surrounded by even more Sakura trees. WIth some help, the two climbed out of their rowboat, tying it off before climbing the short hill and taking a rest. The grass felt cool beneath his hands as he took a seat, letting out a sigh. “Do you come out here often? Rowing all the way over here?” He asked as she sprawled on her back beside him, her braids fanning out.
“Sometimes. If the day’s especially pretty, I’ll make the trip out here and just take it all in. The stars are especially nice here.” She smiled in memory, as if she could summon them now. “Other days I just row around, lying in my boat and running my hands against the surface of the water. Sometimes the fish nip at my fingers. It tickles.” She giggled, flexing her fingers.
“I didn’t realize they had tickly fish in the water.” Obanai laughed at the thought- hundreds of little fish all trying to get a taste of sugar from her hands. “They must be big fans of your homemade treats.”
“Maybe!” She turned on her side, looking up at him with a playful glint. “You know- I think those tickly fish would like you too, Iguro-san. I bet you’d be quite the feast for them!”
“Me? I’d taste like death.” He deadpanned. “They’d take one bite and float to the surface.”
“Pfft! No, don’t say that!” She laughed, waving at him. “You would certainly taste good! Not at all like death! Besides! After all the snacks I fed you on the way here? You’d be just as sweet as me!”
“Maybe bittersweet.” He humored, watching that glint grow in her eyes as she scooted closer to him. “What are you planning, Kanroji?”
“Nothing at all. Just- before you go on declaring you’re not sweet.” She raised her hands, fingers clustered together by her thumbs, opening and closing them like a fish mouth. “I think we should check and make sure!”
“Check how-eeh!” Before he could do anything, those pinchy fingers prodded his sides, making him jump. “Oh no, don’t you dare!”
“Hmm, couldn’t tell! Need to do more tasting!” She giggled as her “fish” continued to pinch and prod his sides, occasionally shooting up to get his ribs while her other hand squeezed along his belly. “Oh, here we are! Let’s see- that’s sweet. There’s some sweet. Oh! This is especially sweet!” Her giggles were soon combined with his own as the Serpent Hashria fell back, weakly trying to block her hands as she gave up the “fish”, opting to tickle him properly.
“Ah! Kahahahhahrohhohohji plehehhehehahse!” Obanai let out an embarrassing squeak when her hands sneaked beneath his back, scratching gently at a particularly bad spot towards the center. “Stahahahahap ihihihiihihiht!”
“Oh? But you’re so sweet, Iguro-san! Sweeter than you realize!” Still, she pulled her hands back by his request, clearly delighted with the reaction she got. Watching him gasp for breath, she hid her growing smile behind her hands. “Hehe, you’re so cute, Iguro-san.”
“Ohohoho, that is IT! Come here!” He pounced before she could react, his fingers dancing along her sides, making her squeal with delight. “You think I’m sweet? Well let’s see how sweet YOU are!”
~~~
It was late when they began their boat ride back, the sky deep oranges and pinks with the sun creeping beneath the horizon. The snacks were finished, their wrappers tucked neatly away within the basket, Kaburamaru napping on top of the lid in a tight coil.
“Kabu’s got the right idea. I’m feeling pretty sleepy myself.” Mitsuri said around a yawn, unable to cover her mouth while her arms worked the oars. She had beaten Obanai to the task, insisting she’d take them back since he’d done all the work there. She made the task seem easy, not an ounce of sweat on her brow as she kept a steady pace across the water. Anyone else and Obanai would probably feel inferior, but with Mitsuri- he could only admire her strength.
“I can take over…” He began, chuckling at her pout. “Okay okay.” He gave in, earning a satisfied smile. “Thank you for today. It’s been wonderful.”
“Thank you too. Having you here with me today, it made me so happy.” She didn’t blush this time, her words soft but filled with genuine emotion. “Really- having you around all the time makes me happy.”
Was that a confession? He didn’t want to assume but… When she looked up at him, her eyes were so kind, so warm. There was a definite fondness in her gaze that sent shivers down his spine, making his toes curl. “Kanroji…”
“Iguro, I-” She suddenly stopped, her gaze moving past him as her mouth fell open. “Oh wow…”
He didn’t need to turn around to see what she was looking at. Around them, the glow of lanterns chased away the dark, floating gently along the water. The entire river was filled with them, the trees glowing with similar hanging ones. It was as if the sky was filled with lights.
“Did you know…” He began, trailing off when she shook her head. So it was a surprise to both of them. “Is a festival going on?”
“Not likely- I didn’t see anything about it.” Mitsuri took it all in, her expression one of awe and joy. “It’s so beautiful.”
“Yes. Yes it is.” Obanai spoke, his eyes fixed on her. She shimmered in the lights like an angel. When her gaze met his, no words were needed.
Like the pages of Mitsuri’s favorite romance books, or the threads of fate; they moved as one, their lips brushing together beneath the glowing lights. Warmth spread through Obanai’s core, lighting him up like the many lanterns around them as he ran a hand along her long pink hair. Her own hands reached out and pulled him closer, balling the fabric of his Haori like she was afraid he’d fade any minute.
When they pulled away, breathless and flushed, he smiled. Resting his forehead against hers, he traced her face with featherlike touch. “You know- I’ve always thought your hair was beautiful, Mitsuri.” He whispered, watching something bloom in her eyes as he said her name.
“Oh Obanai…” She whispered back before leaning in and capturing his lips once more.
~~~
“See? Told you this was a grand idea.” Tengen elbowed Sanemi from their hiding space far from the river, a smug look of satisfaction on his face. “Am I a genius or what?”
“Yeah yeah. Save the gloating for later. “Sanemi rolled his eyes, unable to retort with something snarky. Even he recognized a good idea when he saw one- even if it came from an unlikely source. “You’re killing the vibe.”
“With those two? I highly doubt it.” Tengen smiled, his smugness replaced with a content expression as he began to rise. “Come on, let’s give them some privacy. Our work here is done.”
Brecon Books & Boat Rides
During our visit to the Brecon Beacons, we decided to hire a boat at Brecon and whilst there I couldn’t resist a visit to my favourite bookshop. A necessity when visiting Brecon, Brecon Books has the best selection you could possibly find. I personally always head for the history and poetry sections, although this time I also stopped by the art shelves too. The thing I also love about this store…
My whole high school went on a Disney cruise as a field trip. The Disney ride makers had made large scale versions of Disney boat rides made for the cruises to go on. Needless to say it was disastrous when the cruise full of 3000+ high school age kids was sent through the scaled up version of Splash Mountain. Also, every room on the cruise was normal except for mine, which was just the bathroom from saw 1.
kept thinking about Eddie & Steve deliberately making jokes to ensure that Dustin and co don’t get into the boat on Lover’s Lake.
“Nicely done,” Steve says when they’re far enough away from the bank—when they’ve left a disgruntled Dustin behind rather than a worried one.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah,” Eddie says—glances back to where the kids are, although they’ve already got swallowed up by the darkness. “‘Course, man.” He gives a weak smile as he drags the oar through the water. “Those little shrimps would probably try and, like, cannonball right in, and honestly? I, uh, really don’t think my heart could handle that.”
“Yeah, they… really throw themselves into things.”
Steve decides that he’s never gonna bring up Operation Child Endangerment if Eddie’s in the vicinity—the dude already looks at them all like they’ve got a few screws loose, he doesn’t wanna make it worse.
Although, on second thought, him and Dustin probably let that particular cat out the bag with their persistent optimism way back in the boathouse: “There’s nothing to worry about.”
Eddie’s wide-eyed look painted a thousand words.
Oh, he thinks you’re crazy, sing-songed the perpetual high schooler hiding in Steve’s brain. Eddie ‘The Freak’ Munson thinks you’re crazy. Time to seriously re-evaluate your life choices.
“Did you think Eddie was a bit, uh, weird back there?” Dustin asked him later. “Like, he’ll be okay, right?”
Dustin was prone to using ‘weird’ as a catch-all term, where it could mean anything from someone being genuinely weird to them experiencing severe emotional distress.
Steve clapped him on the shoulder reassuringly. “Henderson, I’m pretty sure he thinks we’re weird.”
He almost wants to make a joke about that now, get Eddie to laugh, maybe. To tell the truth, Steve had almost cracked and laughed himself once he’d gotten into the boat, when he turned and saw Dustin’s comically outraged expression.
It was only as Nancy and Eddie began to row that he registered the laugh would’ve secretly been one of relief—heartened by the sight of the kids left on the shore.
He stays quiet; Eddie’s shoulders are slowly tensing more and more the further across the lake they go.
It’s not noticeable at first—Robin’s providing a running commentary on the movements of Dustin’s compass, while Nancy determinedly pulls her oar in and out of the water—but Steve soon realises that Eddie’s kind of stopped rowing, instead just making ripples as his grip goes slack.
It’s damn hard to see, but Steve just barely makes out Eddie’s eyes glittering in the dark, staring down at the lake.
“Hey,” Steve says quietly. “You don’t have to—we’re not too far out, we can take you back, man.” He tries for levity. “This thing holds three people tops, remember?”
Eddie’s smile is more of a grimace. “Nah, man. Had enough of being chickenshit.”
“Dude, you’re not…”
Steve trails off, biting back his frustration—it doesn’t look like Eddie’s listening to him anyway; he’s still not taken his eyes off the water. Steve briefly wonders if he’s got that thing Robin says she gets sometimes, something about an imp—it’s why she never gets on Ferris wheels or whatever, convinced that she’s somehow gonna fall.
Eddie gives himself a shake and resumes rowing.
“Sorry. S’just… pitch black down there. He—” Eddie clears his throat. “He wouldn’t have seen—”
His voice cracks, fades into the night. His grip on the oar slips—he snatches it back before it can fall.
“Eddie,” Steve begins, but Eddie speaks right over the top of him.
“I—I hoped he was just drowning instead.” Eddie scoffs, and there’s a bitterness to it, an edge of self-loathing that Steve wishes he couldn’t hear. “And then maybe—” A sigh, another grimace disguised as a smile. “That’s a pretty fucked up thing to think, huh?”
He’s got that tone, Steve thinks, like when he kept repeating that he ran away from Chrissy—like he thought that if he said it enough, someone would snap, condemn him. Like he’s looking for proof that he’s monstrous.
Robin’s still talking, tactfully giving Eddie a semblance of privacy. Underneath her chatter, Steve hears Nancy’s rowing falter for just a moment, and he feels a pang in his chest.
He thinks of Barb and drowning. Wonders again if an ordinary tragedy would’ve been better compared to…
Then he lets it all sink back down.
“That’s not fucked up,” he says firmly. “Trust me, dude, that’s… that’s normal.”
Eddie chuckles shortly—it sounds like he’s doing something similar, pushing everything down, down…
“Normal, huh? No-one’s called me that before.”
“First time for everything.”
There’s a flicker of amusement across Eddie’s face when he replies, “Guess compared to you freaks, I’m pretty normal.”
“Ooh, did that feel good?” Steve says, appealing again to his mental high schooler. “Bit of role reversal?”
Eddie laughs more genuinely. “Sure did. Community theatre’s done wonders.”
A silence falls, and Steve encourages himself to get all relaxed by the boat bobbing up and down. Yeah, nothing’s strictly been confirmed yet, but he already knew what he was getting into when he stepped off the shore, water leaking into his shoes.
It’s gotta be him.
“I know what you’re doing, Harrington,” Eddie murmurs.
Steve gives him a questioning look.
Eddie pulls in some long breaths in exaggerated imitation. “You’re not subtle, Mister Swim Captain.”
“Co-captain,” Steve corrects, hiding his surprise. He can’t really imagine Eddie paying attention to the swim team, least of all a former swim team.
“Oh, forgive me for my inaccuracy.”
Hmm, he’s getting borderline poetic, Steve thinks. Like he was with Mordor and stuff.
So. He’s afraid.
“I’ll be fine,” Steve says lightly.
Eddie lets out a short groan, mutters something that sounds like famous last words. Then, quieter still—Steve can’t quite make it out.
Something about the dark.
Steve could repeat that he’ll be fine, but he knows that’s a shit reassurance. He settles for continuing to breathe in and out, long and slow; Eddie’s beginning to look like he’s unconsciously mimicking the pattern, his shoulders lowering.
“Just come back up, Harrington,” he says, so softly that Steve might’ve imagined it.
“Co-captain’s promise,” he says.
Eddie’s lips twitch. But he’s still fixed on the lake’s depths, like he’s waiting for something—dreading it.
Like something’s lurking in the dark.
