Paul Blest at More Perfect Union:
Thousands of workers at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee have voted to join the United Auto Workers, defying an all-out union-busting effort from the state’s political leaders and marking a key victory for the United Auto Workers in their renewed effort to organize the South and non-union plants.
Unofficial results tallied Friday showed that after three days of voting, more than two-thirds of workers voted to join the UAW. The win in Chattanooga is the first successful attempt to organize a non-union automaker in decades and comes after multiple failed attempts to organize the plant, including in 2014 and 2019. More than 4,300 workers were eligible to vote this week.  “I can't explain it. It's not like the first times,” Renee Berry, who has worked at the Chattanooga plant for 14 years and through two prior facility-wide votes, told us in the lead-up to the election. “The first few times was hell…now it's like we can roll our shoulders back, because we got it.”  Volkswagen is the world’s largest auto company by revenue, and until today, every one of its plants around the globe has been unionized except for one.
"This is going to be in history books down the road. This is huge—forever huge,” Robert Soderstrom, a worker at the plant, told More Perfect Union. “People recognize for the first time in a long time, on a mass scale, that there's got to be some changes. And some of the power and stuff that's gone to the corporate world needs to come back to us little guys.” The victory in Tennessee continues a winning streak for the UAW, which negotiated record contracts at the Detroit Three of Ford, GM, and Stellantis last year following a lengthy “stand-up” strike. After passing the contracts, UAW President Shawn Fain announced a $40 million effort to organize non-union U.S. plants, largely based in right-to-work states like Tennessee and owned by auto companies based in Europe, Japan, and South Korea, as well as EV manufacturers like Tesla and Rivian.
Since launching that new effort, more than 10,000 autoworkers around the country have signed union cards, according to the UAW. Earlier this month, workers at a Mercedes plant in Vance, Alabama became the second group to file for an election, which will be held from May 13 to 17. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey and the state Chamber of Commerce have forcefully opposed the unionization effort, claiming it would hurt Alabama autoworkers—who, even before the pandemic, were making less than they did in 2002 when adjusted for inflation. The same dynamic has played out in Tennessee. Gov. Bill Lee, who denounced the last unsuccessful union campaign in 2019, said it would be a “mistake” for workers at the Chattanooga plant to unionize and boasted about the state’s “right-to-work” law.
🚨🚨 BREAKING:🚨🚨 Workers at the Volkswagen (VW) plant in Chattanooga have voted yes to join the United Auto Workers (UAW) after 2 failed attempts in 2014 and 2019. #UAW #VWChattanooga #1u

BBYMUTHA SHARES NEW SINGLE "LINES"
Tumblr media
The defiant Chattanooga-born, Atlanta-based artist and underground staple bbymutha has just shared her new single “lines” from her upcoming album sleep paralysis—out 4/19 via True Panther Records. Defined by colorful lyricism and genre-bending production, bbymutha instantly stood out among other SoundCould-era artists on her 2017 hit “Rules” (6M+ Streams) and solidified her name a year later with "Lately" featuring Rico Nasty, as well as the poppy, R&B-infused banger "Sleeping With the Enemy" (9M+ Streams). A viral performance of “Heavy Metal” on COLORS in 2019 followed by the release of bbymutha’s critically-acclaimed debut album Muthaland in 2020 led to subsequent collaborations with Zelooperz, Baby Tate, Na-Kel, Pink Siifu, Kelela, and Fly Anakin on her most recent album, Muthaleficent 3. Most recently, bbymutha announced a 25-date tour in support of the forthcoming sleep paralysis, along with new tracks “gun kontrol” and “go!”, with Pitchfork praising the former for the “allure and force of [bbymutha’s] voice, a thick Tennessee drawl that she wields like a weapon”. Cementing herself as a staple in the Southern underground scene, bbymutha is continuing to usher in a new era of self-discovery and reinvention on her new single “lines”, and forthcoming album sleep paralysis – out on 4/19.
With its jittery beat and electric-shock lyricism, “lines” finds bbymutha continuing to challenge traditional genre boundaries by experimenting with new sonics and textures – a trend that will continue across sleep paralysis. A unique blend of Punk, Electronic, and Rap, “lines” is a heart-pounding thrill ride packed with lyrical barbs (“Religion, worship, purpose / Love is not enough for me”) tied together with an infectious UGK/Fat Pat-referencing hook (“He wanna cut me / Like the lines on the dresser”). The track is the third offering from sleep paralysis, which compiles beats from nine different Electronic and Club producers including Foisey, Bon Music Vision, and Kilder. Marking bbymutha’s first full-length LP with True Panther Records, sleep paralysis layers steely and hilarious musings over windswept synths and echoing industrial 808s, bringing both an urgency to bbymutha’s words and a glint of experimentation to her ever-developing sound. The album’s inspiration was derived from a post-lockdown tour in the UK on which she was introduced to the sounds of 90's Garage and UK dance music, a revelating moment following a gauntlet of bad luck and creative rut during the peak of the pandemic. The album’s title, sleep paralysis is a literal reference to the syndrome which bbymutha has been afflicted with since childhood. Providing a way for her to dive back into memories she didn’t even know she had was essential in crafting the album. Showcasing why NYLON recently hailed bbymutha as “Chattanooga’s best rapper”, it’s an album fascinated with the dreamlike nature of trauma, personal history, and fantasy.

Downtown Chattanooga: Travel Guide
Original post link / Original post date: September 25 2023
Chattanooga, Tennessee is a beautiful location packed with things to do. Something that I have implemented on the trips I’ve gone on would be having a day for certain areas: you have a day for downtown, for shopping, for Lookout Mountain, and a day for anything else. This keeps the flow of the trip going nicely. Today, I’m discussing a downtown day in Chattanooga idea, for any sort of references you would like to have for your own trip or wanderlust Pinterest board.
My picks: Tennessee Aquarium, iMAX, Creative Discovery Museum, Hunter Museum of American Art, Moonpie General Store, and Rocket Fizz.
As always, make sure to research these areas further to ensure they are what you would like to spend your time doing, or actually fit the wants of your party. I would highly recommend if you intend on doing all of this, to break this up into two days. I also have another post covering Chattanooga in a broad-stroke, and I have that linked here for any reference you might need.
Tennessee Aquarium:
Tumblr media
Website / Address: One Broad Street, Chattanooga, Tennessee. 37402 / Contact: 800.262.0695  Hours:  Sunday-Friday: 10 am – 5 pm.  Saturday: 9 am – 5 pm.  Closed Thanksgiving Day & Christmas Day / At the time of writing, the Aquarium is closed on 10-22-2023 for a special event.
Located in downtown Chattanooga on the Tennessee River, this is a location that takes about 3 hours to fully get through; it is within walking distance of the iMAX theatre and tickets are available for both locations at the same location, either online or in the Tennessee Aquarium ticket office. This is a walking location, so make sure to dress yourself and your party accordingly. This is an easily accessible aquarium so there aren’t awkward elevator locations in relation to the layout of the aquarium. There are two gift shops, so be warned. You will want to buy a dumb octopus thing.
iMAX Theatre:
Website / Address: 201 Chestnut Street, Chattanooga, Tennessee. 37402. / Contact: 423.266.4629
Located a short walk away from the Tennessee Aquarium, this is dependent on the length of your film viewing, but can be anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours. Make sure to plan accordingly for the film you want to see and double check the time slot for the film. Year round, they have films relating to wildlife and ecosystems in connection to the Tennessee Aquarium, but it still does function as an iMAX so there will be other films too. A fair warning for those who are not too equated with iMAX: if you or anyone in your party has sensory overstimulation issues, vision issues that can cause migraines, or are migraine prone, I would be wary of attending the iMAX theatre.
Creative Discovery Museum:
Website / Address: 321 Chestnut Street, Chattanooga, Tennessee. 37402. / Contact: 423.756.2738  Hours:  Thursday-Tuesday:10 am – 5 pm  Closed on Wednesdays through the spring at the time of writing, 09-25-2023.
When I was a child, my parents broke up the two days for downtown Chattanooga so we could attend both this museum and the aquarium. I think that is best if you want to start in the morning. Aside from that, the children’s museum is located just down the street from the aquarium. You can comfortably walk there if you parked in the Aquarium’s parking lot. The length of time you spend here will be dependent on any little party members you have, so just make sure you account for that.
Hunter Museum of American Art:
Tumblr media
Website / Address: 10 Bluff View, Chattanooga, Tennessee. 37403 / Contact: 423.267.0968 Hours:  Tuesday: Closed Monday, Wednesday-Saturday: 10 am – 5 pm Sunday: 12 pm – 5 pm
This museum is located on the Tennessee River, west of the Tennessee Aquarium. I would recommend driving there and getting your parking validated by the museum. This museum is wonderful and as it is self-guided, you can take as little or as much time as you would like. If I had to give you a time, I would say 1 1/2 hours. This is another walking museum but it has a lot more places to sit and stare as opposed to the aquarium. This museum is a wonderful, inside, break and it’s so nice to just be able to walk around.
Downtown shopping- Moonpie General Store & Rocket Fizz:
Moonpie General Store: Website / Address: 429 Broad Street, Chattanooga, Tennessee. 37402. / Contact: 423.877.0592 Hours:  Monday-Wednesday: 10 am – 7 pm.  Thursday-Saturday: 10 am – 8 pm.  Sunday: 10 am – 6 pm.
Rocket Fizz: Address: 411 Broad Street #105, Chattanooga, Tennessee. 37402 / Contact: 423.777.5699 Hours:  Monday-Thursday: 10 am – 9 pm.  Friday-Saturday: 10 am – 10 pm. Sunday: 11 am – 9 pm.
There is a small downtown area where there are local shops and such, and these three would be the ones I think are nice to go to. I would recommend coming to the area for the afternoon of your day in Chattanooga. The Moonpie General Store is really a Moonpie store, but it’s very cool to go in. Plus these are the freshest moon pies you could buy. Rocket Fizz is a soda and candy store with a fun collection of niche sodas and hard to find candies. There are a lot of niche and local shops in this area that I haven’t personally visited, but I would encourage you to have a look around.
Loose extra thoughts: the downtown Chile’s is very nice. I know it’s a chain, but a good chain restaurant is reassuring to have, so I do want to make sure that I keep up with letting you guys know if there is a good chain restaurant as a safety net. City Cafe is also in downtown Chattanooga and they have some pretty darn good deserts.
That is my loose itinerary idea for a day in downtown Chattanooga; feel free to use this as a basis or general idea of what you would like to plan for your own trip! There’s a lot to discover in Chattanooga so I’ll make sure to update this if there’s any new ideas I have from any trips I go on.
Aside from that, make sure to take care of yourself sometime today, and treat yourself with gentleness, All in all- Happy travels! – Annie, the crosseyed cricket.

Dave Jamieson at HuffPost:
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Roughly 4,000 Volkswagen workers here will decide this week on whether to form a union at their assembly plant. Their votes will shape more than just the future of their jobs — they could mark a turning point for both the United Auto Workers and the auto industry in the South. The election begins Wednesday and runs through Friday. The union previously lost two factorywide elections at the facility, including a stinging 833 to 776 defeat in 2019. Zachary Costello quietly supported that organizing effort. This time he’s made his feelings known to anyone who will listen, throwing himself into the campaign as a member of the organizing committee.
“I don’t want to narrowly lose again. This time, I’m not sitting on the sideline,” said Costello, 34. “To me it feels like the most important thing I’ve ever been a part of, to the point where it doesn’t even feel real.” The UAW already represents Ford and General Motors workers at auto plants in the South, but for decades the union has struggled to organize foreign-owned “transplant” automakers in the region, where union membership tends to be low and politicians are generally hostile to labor groups. As a result, the UAW has lost membership as a share of the industry, forcing the union into a more defensive posture in the places where it represents autoworkers — primarily Midwestern plants run by Ford, GM and Jeep parent company Stellantis. Meanwhile, much of the electric-vehicle boom is expected to take place down South, making the union’s inroads there all the more important.
[...] But organizing the likes of Volkswagen, Mercedes, Toyota and Hyundai would increase the union’s bargaining power across the sector, including in Detroit. Ford, GM and Stellantis like to point to their higher labor costs relative to the foreign automakers and the nonunion, Texas-based Tesla. So the UAW’s power will always be limited as long as the Big Three′s competitors remain nonunion, said Art Wheaton, an expert in labor negotiations at Cornell University. “This is a big deal, since you need to increase market share of the number of plants that are unionized to give you more leverage,” he said. “Really the UAW needs to have more than just the Detroit Three organized if they want to have the same sort of impact to lift wages and benefits.”
This week, a big union election looms in the VW plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as the UAW seeks to unionize the plant. The union lost the last two times, but this time could be different.

BBYMUTHA SHARES NEW LP SLEEP PARALYSIS
Tumblr media
The defiant Chattanooga-born, Atlanta-based artist and underground heavyweight bbymutha has just shared her new album sleep paralysis—out now via True Panther Records. Fresh off a Washington Post feature that hailed her as a “prolific rapper [whose songs] mix Southern rap menace with the bump and bounce of underground clubs”, bbymutha's highly-anticipated sophomore LP arrives just as she kicks off a 25-date international tour (ticket link here). The album’s title “sleep paralysis” is a literal reference to the syndrome that bbymutha has been afflicted with since childhood – providing a way for her to dive back into memories she didn’t even know she had, an essential component in crafting the album. Defined by her colorful lyricism and genre-bending production, bbymutha has continously stood out among other SoundCloud-era artists since her 2017 hit “Rules” (6M+ Streams), and solidified her name a year later with "Lately" featuring Rico Nasty, as well as the poppy, R&B-infused banger "Sleeping With the Enemy" (9M+ Streams). Earlier this year, bbymutha shared new tracks “gun kontrol” and “go!”, with Pitchfork praising the former for the “allure and force of [bbymutha’s] voice, a thick Tennessee drawl that she wields like a weapon”. bbymutha is fresh off the album's third single “lines”, which HotNewHipHop lauded as “a drug-drenched banger” – continuing to set the tone for sleep paralysis, which bbymutha is using to cement herself as an artist at the forefront of Southern underground scene, while ushering in a new era of self-discovery and reinvention.
sleep paralysis, bbymutha’s full-length debut with independent label True Panther Records, finds her continuing to challenge traditional genre boundaries by experimenting with new sonic landscapes inspired by a trip to the UK. A unique blend of Punk, Electronic, Club, and Rap, sleep paralysis compiles beats from nine different producers including Foisey, Bon Music Vision, and Kilder. A visionary artist who’s steadily built her cult following through a strong run of independent releases, sleep paralysis layers steely and hilarious musings over windswept synths and echoing industrial 808s, bringing both an urgency to bbymutha’s words, and a glint of experimentation to her ever-developing sound. The album’s inspiration was derived from a post-lockdown tour in the UK on which she was introduced to the sounds of 90's Garage and UK dance music, a revelatory moment following a gauntlet of bad luck and a creative rut during the peak of the pandemic. Chattanooga in Autumn: Travel Guide
Original post link / Original post date: October 16 2023
Chattanooga, Tennessee in the fall is a gorgeous experience to behold. The chilliest months are October and November of the fall meteorological calendar, so keep that in mind when planning your trip. September is in that three month group, but it tends to be warmer.
Averages for September:  High- 87-78° F \ Low- 68-58° F Averages for October:  High- 77-67° F \ Low- 57-46° F Averages for November:  High- 67-57° F \ Low- 46-39° F
The biggest change out of summer, in my opinion and experience living in a similar climate to Chattanooga, is that theres less humidity in the air so the nights actually cool off. It would be best to double check a forecast and past averages for the specific week or dates you’ll be traveling on, as these temperatures tend to trend downwards week by week.
One more thing: I tend to recommend activities on Lookout Mountain, and if you’re going to be doing any activities on any of the ridges and mountains in the area, please remember that the temperature on the base will probably not be the same as the temperature on the mountain. In my experience, Lookout Mountain’s Rock City can be about 5-10 degrees cooler than the base of the mountain in Chattanooga. So be sure to plan for that.
Incline Railway: Website The Incline Railway is beautiful to experience in the changing fall foliage; becauce of the structure of the railway, you’ll be able to see the trees and changing leaves up and down no matter where you sit, as the car faces the same way both times. The incline is now fully handicap accessible, and I believe that is specific for wheelchair users. As noted above, one of the stops on this will be further up Lookout Mountain, so bundle up a bit for that change in elevation. If you’re like me and like eating ice cream when it’s cold because… i don’t know why- there’s a Clumpie’s Ice Cream Co. shop at the bottom St. Elmo station. I like their Butter Pecan.
Rock City: Website Further up the mountain from the Incline Railway is Rock City, atop Lookout Mountain, in the beautiful forest-like park. This particular location is pet-friendly, so if your dog or cat… I was going to say iguana, but I think they’d get a little too chilly- they’re allowed to join you here. It does get much cooler than in Chattanooga so make sure you bring an extra jacket. Rock City is filled with beautiful turning leaves and trees, so you’ll be able to experience that if you’re there. My only note aside from the temperature change is that the shade from the trees is actually cooler unlike in the summer where it can be just as hot, so it might be chilly depending on how shady it is.
Tennessee Aquarium: Website While this is much more indoors than the other ideas, this is a nice morning activity for a rainy day or a particularly cold day. You’ll be able to enjoy the view of the river from the landings and see the northern part of Chattanooga across the river. This is especially fun- in my experience- if you have any little ones, to keep them out of the chillier weather while enjoying your trip. My only thought on that is to make sure you have removable layers. There are parts in both buildings that have warmer areas for the animals they are caring for, so you’ll get a little steamy in a puffer jacket.
Tennessee Valley Railroad: Website This is probably my favorite thing to do in chattanooga for the fall: a local trip on the Tennessee Valley Railroad during the fall. This route takes you through a wooded area, past neighborhoods and on bridges, to their steam-yard, where they restore railcars and engine cars. I’ve mentioned this on most of them but… the foliage is very nice to see change on this train ride. I would definitely say to bundle up a bit, as some cars don’t have heating and sometimes the windows are open for ventilation. Maybe take a small blanket if you can comfortably fit it in a backpack. If you really need to warm up, I’d recommend the coffee at the deli in the main station.
Those are my recommendations for what I think you definitely need to do on a fall trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee. I have other posts discussing other attractions and things to do in Chattanooga, Tennessee, so I’ll have those linked here for further reference.
Hopefully this helps you on any planning or narrowing down what you’d like to do, or it can fulfill a little bit of wanderlust like it does for me.
Other than that, I hope you’re able to have a moment of peace today and make sure you get a little sun, Happy travels! – Annie, the crosseyed cricket.
