There is this question of like, okay, so if Aziraphale was being coerced by the Metatron, then doesn't that take away his agency? Isn't it more powerful if he simply really wants to return to Heaven because he thinks it's the right thing to do?
And the thing is, I think both things are true at once (as a result of the cognitive dissonance that's common in complex trauma situations), so the interpretations aren't even as incompatible as they look in the first place. Also, there's no arguing with emotional resonance; that part is purely subjective.
BUT I did want to point out one thing, which is what the story might eventually be trying to say regarding free will or the lack of it or what it really is anyway.
What if the narrative wants to acknowledge that people's choices are often limited? What if there's a little commentary in the overarching story about how we can help each other even when we have no real power? After all, despite the fact that Crowley and Aziraphale have clear privileges over humans, their stories also very profoundly resonate with those of us whose lives have been constrained by our societies. They experience both privilege and oppression, and it allows their roles in the narrative to encompass both individual empowerment and social responsibility. It is another layer of duality.
I've been saying that I think Aziraphale's main error is more in the way that he talked to Crowley rather than in agreeing to follow the Metatron back to Heaven. And then the mirror might also be true: we know Crowley didn't make a mistake by refusing to go back to Heaven, but he may have made mistakes in the way he talked to Aziraphale. What if the narrative wants to suggest that it matters how we talk to each other? Or maybe it wants to put an emphasis on listening to each other, even when we are sincerely convinced that whatever else we're focused on is more important. The end of Season 2 was always going to be a heartbreaking separation - but maybe they could have avoided whatever trouble is to come with the "not talking" bit we read about in the beginning of Season 3 (taking "not talking" at face value).
Of course, if things had been less dramatic, we probably wouldn't remember it as well, and then we wouldn't remember the core messages, either. We certainly wouldn't be pulling the scene apart like we do, so in the long run, maybe we wouldn't even notice what the story is trying to say at all. That's why it's relevant to be asking what would happen if communication had been better, WHILE the poor communication is also worthwhile.
There is also a position out there that Aziraphale was entirely 100% influenced by the Metatron's presence and couldn't say anything except exactly what he said. This doesn't resonate with me either because-- well, I could be wrong, but I tend to feel that there has to be an element of choice involved because this is a narrative about choices. But more to the point, because Aziraphale and Crowley have successfully communicated under duress before, I find it unlikely that the narrative would cut off the hypothetical possibility of better communication during the Final Fifteen.
One of the cool things about this story is that there are many plausible messages it could want to prioritize and many plausible angles from which it could approach that ultimate message. I'm looking forward to which ones it chooses. But I dunno, handwaving Aziraphale's anxiety before, during, and after the chinwag - either as a way he "always" behaves or as a positive, excited reaction - kinda feels like being told to ignore important information.

i pole dance for the acrobatic element and i think ive realized what can drive the cognitive dissonance of stripping = empowering.
many women in my classes will say dancing and moving sensually makes them feel sexy and empowered, and they probably project that onto strippers and other “sex workers” as well. but they’re ignoring the fact that dancing makes them feel sexy and empowered in a safe space surrounded by only other women. if they were surrounded by men who frequent clubs, i doubt they’d feel the same. like yeah im sure u feel good about urself in a protected environment where everyone is genuinely supporting u, unlike actual clubs.
yeah and like just think what type of men go to strip clubs as well… groups of drunk men, gross horny men, business men who feel very entitled, etc. but i think in general the empowerment narrative stems from the assumption that a) money is power so being paid for something is automatically empowering i guess, b) it breaks with the expectation women should be modest and saving ourselves (which in turn reinforces the madonna-whore complex by positioning two extremes against each other with no alternative) and c) the underlying but never in that form put forward assumption that payment makes up for lack of dignity and respect.

i've had a very puzzling and angering cognitive dissonance to contend with for ten years now.
it's to do with the field i've studied and worked in (mental health) vs my own mental health. every adult around me has always been supportive of this career path, hailing it as some ultra-noble long-suffering vocation to take up. yet very few of those same supporters are willing to support my seeking help for my own mental health. i know it's due to half-baked, individual focused pop psychology and a healthy dose of stigma.
but there is something very very strange about spending half my life advocating for empowerment and better care for adolescents, for destigmatisation, for context-based interventions, for gunning for my friends in their personal lives…while i myself feel so incredibly disempowered to advocate for my own wellbeing.
