It's about time I did Akane, huh?

Okay, first things first: I wasn't the only one who didn't realize that her OG design had a ponytail, right? Right? Like, sure, her overworld sprite makes it pretty clear that she has a ponytail but if you're only paying attention to the character sprites themselves, the shape of her hair makes it look like she has a bob-cut of sorts, not a ponytail. I didn't even realize her hair is a ponytail until I saw the CG cutscene of Kiyoka's death and went, "Wait a minute. That's a ponytail." So the first thing I did was make her ponytail a bit more obvious. Her hair ribbons also just, blends in with her hair due to having the same tone. If you look hard enough or once you notice them, you'll see them in her design, but that's still a poor choice in shade if you can't see that piece of accessory at first glance. So I brightened up the red color of the bows to make them stand out more. Especially in her hair/headdress. Aside from that, the rest of her OG design was pretty good. Akane takes her job as a maid very seriously, to the point that she doesn't like it when she's compared to those fake maids from maid cafes. So it'd make sense that she'd wear a formal maid outfit. All I did was make my own interpretation of her design. I covered up her chest as she's the kind of person to put emphasis on her professionality on being an actual maid and not one of those "wannabe maid cafes" that she so detests. So she'd cover her skin a lot more, even when she does have a, uh, more sultry side to her that she keeps under wraps. (Which she chose not to filter as a Despair.) I made her dress a little longer, her sleeves reaches her elbows now but they're rolled up a bit for convenience, changed the designs of her apron and heels, and replaced her collar necklace with a bow cause I couldn't make the necklace look good with the type of collar I gave for her top. And with her Despair form, I just removed what she already took off in that OG sprite: the bow, the apron, and let her hair down, which I made her fringe slightly more messy. I always found the...middle part?? Of her dress looked weird, so I had it stop around her waist instead. I kept her color palette the same as black, white, and red are a great color combo and ties into her connection to Monokuma as the mastermind. Not only that, white is most prevalent in her color palette in her Pre-Despair form, to emphasize "purity" and "good", but once the apron is removed in her Despair form, black overtakes the white, which can symbolize evil, misfortune, and even bad luck. Bad luck in the context of how screwed everyone was upon realizing who the mastermind is, anyways!

I love Akane. I can fix her, I swear- (I'm joking, I'm joking-)

I'm not as much of an Mlp fan as I used to when I was younger (I still check out the new G5 shows/stuff sometimes and I like it), but Ngl been checking out the new stuff and this is still a downgrade IMO

Ok so I absolutely love your Hera art.

Pink/orange/multicolored Hera

Honestly I feel like warm colors in general just suit her so well.

oh, i don't know! when i ask people to draw hera blue, the reasons for that are: 1) it makes her more immediately recognizable, and 2) i like what it represents! it draws on existing sci-fi imagery of holograms. a projected image of someone who is physically elsewhere. it's associated with water and sky, distance and longing.

physically, i think there are two heras: there's the way people literally perceive her from an outside perspective - formless, or associating her with the hephaestus itself, which is misidentification. i love when people draw eiffel interacting with hera's cameras + monitors very much, but i also think it's clear she feels she's seeing through them, not that she is them. and there's hera as she sees herself in her own mind (and in eiffel's mind, in the finale), where... i really think she just perceives herself as an average, tangible person.

so i don't think she's literally blue, i just think it's a good way to give her a visual presence in art that's closer to her self-perception, while still communicating some sense of distance / disconnect, if that makes sense? if hera had a body and could wear clothes, i think she'd love to try on all sorts of colors!!

Today on "Another JeanMarco Soulmate AU absolutely no one asked for" I present to you -

Soulmate AU in which you stop seeing colors when your soulmate dies, the only exception being your soulmate. Now cue to Jean who just found Marco's, his best friend's, body. And you know, there's the shock of finding out Marco's dead. The pain and confusion and guilt. But there's also the revelation, because despite everything he can still see Marco like nothing took place at all- yes, half of his face is missing and his body is straight up lifeless, but Jean can still make out the color of his eye ; see that light shade of brown perfectly, remember all the times he has found himself looking at them while listening to Marco talk. He can still make out the colors of his uniform, see the same shade of black his hair has always had, practically see. Despite being dead, Marco was the only piece of color left in his life.

And there's denial for a moment because there's no way Marco was his soulmate. But that goes away fast, getting replaced by guilt. By the fact that he hasn't been there to save him, that Marco has to die all alone without anyone being there for him.

And that was worse than the simple fact that he could no longer see colors ; because Marco was there when Jean needed him, but he failed to do the same. And not only he lost his best friend that day, but his other half too.

#Anyway this fucker doesn't tell anyone about the whole soulmate thing. Not of shame of anything but because he's mourning man and also is no #One's business. Anyway the first one to find out is Armin because he notices and ever since he makes sure to mention colors as often as he #can. Like 'These flowers are a nice shade of red' or 'Green suits you well Jean! You should wear this shirt' stuff like that #Jean does appreciates it once he gets over his ego and pain and lets other people get closer to him #Funny enough Jean is the only one in that situation loool. Well I don't know about Reiner and Historia is getting there soon enough but #everyone else??? Colors everywhere man #Is both funny and sad #'Since when..?' Jean expected that question yet he wasn't truly ready to answer it. Deep down he knew he was never going to be ready for it #'Trost' his voice stains sightly while naming the city. His own city. It wasn't that far fetched for Jean's soulmate to be some civilian #lost during the evacuations or something. But then Connie's eyes widen ever so sightly the realization sitting in. He doesn't even register #when he says 'It was Marco right?' and regrets it immediately. Jean's painful face is all the answer they needed #Also Historia ready the letter and the world losing colors while she's doing that??? Her tearing up a little but not letting herself cry #until she gets alone???? Her going to Jean once that happens and them comforting each other?????#They starts seeing colors again once Eren dies. Love how you do colors!! It feels so welcoming and warm, like when the food critic eats ratatouille and flashbacks to his past, it feels like that <33 any tips on how you do colors?

Aw thank you! Omg ratatouille is a masterpiece I'm honored haha

As for colors, I actually struggled a lot with the palette in my latest piece but here are some tips that might help:

First thing I do is decide on the mood I want to convey (specific or vague, sometimes it's just vibes tbh) and then I tend to use colors I associate with that mood. At this point, looking at references can help -- I have a folder full of saved art for this, and as ethically dodgy Pinterest is, having some kind of reference board can help!

I personally prefer limited palettes, so to start I usually stick to two main colors and a third for smaller details/pop of color. Something like the 60-30-10 rule from @/tomatatoro:

It can help to create an underpainting before laying down other colors. Easiest method is to fill your canvas with a midtone (typically one that matches the mood). Some people like using grey and I think that makes things muddy, but either way it lets you see values better.

Know/learn basic color contrasts! No need to hit the books, but Johannes Itten has a great explanation for these:

Shadows are rarely pure grey/black/one color, and highlights are rarely pure white.

This is just an extra thing, but if I ever feel like my colors are flat or boring, I'll take one of my older pieces/wips/etc and put it on a low-opacity blending mode on top. You'll have to clean it up a bit, but that always creates some interesting color variations

finally introducing the other character who also occupies a part of my brain:

Meet Giewont!

while the creator of it, Maria Leszczyńska, originally intended to make a war machine, she struggled a lot with finding resources then. however, with her and her family's life deeply affected by both world wars, the idea never left her mind. inspired by utopian idea of glass houses from a novel "the spring to come" ¹, she created her machine from glass. it would be cheap to make, yet durable, available as help to those in need, able to do hard work in times when it was needed - but if fragile peace was in danger again, it could fight alongside other soldiers. as if to set that role of protector in stone, she named it Giewont ². to test her creation, she gifed it to her brother Andrzej, who owned a small farm near the seaside.

Giewont worked as much as four men, not needing to be paid or fed like people would. it was a perfect solution for everybody, the new industrial revolution. that was, until about half a year into her work, glass started to shatter. it turned out not to be as durable as the utopian story made it to be, especially in contact with rough farm tools. small cracks also started to appear after they worked outside in winter, with low temperatures on the outside and hot steam circulating inside. with her fingers and edges getting sharper every day, Giewont was forbidden from taking care of animals anymore, as she would injure them. she was given the only task with no way to injure others - they recieved a showel fully made from metal and was ordered to dig. she did as she was told, even though the work put strain on her already-falling-apart fingers.

but when one day, when returning home, she noticed daughter of Andrzej, Aniela, swimming too far away from the shore and having trouble coming back, long forgotten wire snapped into its place as she jumped into the water to save her. while Giewont did bring her back home, carrying her in their arms, the girl had severe cuts on her body from coming in contact with robot's sharp hands. furious with his sister creation, Andrzej took it outside, desperate to destroy it. blinded by anger, he didn't even notice the storm gathering over the horizon

Andrzej took the metal showel and struck Giewont on the side on their head, then again, until her body fell and crumbled to pieces. He covered it with sand and raised his hands to deal the final blow.

that's when the lightning struck.

and the man fell to the ground, dead.

the sand melted from the heat around Giewont, filling the empty spaces and connecting the pieces back together. raising from their shallow grave, with body more rigid than what she was used to, she took her shovel and decided to bury the man, with what respect they had left for him. that was, after she dealt the final blow herself.

although miraculous, the lightning didn't return her to the previous state of being. their motions were stiff and some parts of theirs got lost forever among the sands of the beach. the part of her head where the first blow was dealt never worked properly again, rendering Giewont deaf in one ear (or whatever was left from it). however it did some good as well, as it widened the space around her mouth, finally making them able to talk - even if it was simillar to a whistle. determined to help people but with a body that kept hurting everyone around her, Giewont set off into the world, trying to find a home and piece herself together, leaving parts herself and a dead body behind.
