It was definitely a beautiful day in May looking down the Bow River with the blue skies above and hillsides a tree stretching on the horizon...
Copper Mountain Mine has tailings dams holding back 309 million metric tonnes of tailings and they're likely to fail in extreme weather or seismic events. Dam failure would dump the sludge into sensitive ecosystems, waterways, and Princeton, B.C. Very little is being done to make this less likely and its predicted to fail should the mine reach the tailings pond maximum permitted capacity. Which is expected to happen in 2027.
March 14: Probably the best day on the mountain of the season! We got about 6-7 inches at Copper so a decent pow day but the foothills just west of Denver got pummelled with 30+ inches and it closed the highway. No one from Denver could drive up to the resorts so there were hardly any people, and no lift lines!
I met up with Rose and Bianca and we took many pillowy soft powder lines like this!
A mountain spirit to be respected, the Mistress of the Copper Mountain dwells within those mines. It is ultimately she who decides whether precious stone and metal can be taken.
On a ski trip from Denver to Copper Mountain, it became clear how drastically weather patterns can shift. A leisurely drive can become a test of preparation and resilience.

The weather in the Rocky Mountains is as unpredictable as it is breathtaking. One moment, the sun might be shining down on the snow-dusted peaks. The next, a storm could be rolling in, obscuring the landscape in a blanket of white.
This diversity in weather conditions presents a unique challenge to travelers and adventurers alike.

Looking Down Railroad Tracks of the Canadian Pacific Railway (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens

With some mountains far off in the distance, I got down low on the tracks. I decided to put the focus on a point a few feet away so that I could keep much of the far off settings somewhat in focus. The idea of the image was a setting with trees on both sides and looking off to the mountains beyond.
Copper Mountain: couple of tourists at the entrance, dinner at Sawmill Pizza, Copper Country concert with Cam, tourists doing the bumper boats and zip line, detour to Loveland Pass on the way back to the airport.
