Path to Paradise
Dan shivers, can't help himself. Dumb, animal fear, and he wants to bare his throat to it. “What are you – ”
“I promised,” Hess whispers. “I promised. But just this, alright? It'll be like it never happened.” He slides a step nearer, the pressure of his fingers hard and greedy. “It won't matter.”
After the apocalypse doesn't quite happen, Daniel Waters is just trying to return to his nice, quiet life. What he gets instead is a new neighbour. Hess is friendly, charming and working with demons. He's also strangely familiar.
There are gaps in Dan's memory, but that doesn't seem to matter. They say the devil always looks after his own, and apparently?
Well, apparently Dan belongs to the devil.

It is FINALLY time to share my bind of Path to Paradise by @ladyinbooks! This is an original work on AO3 about the man who fought the Beast and his demons at the apocalypse and the gaps in his memory after. This was the first original work I read on AO3 and I NEEDED to bind it! The typeset is inspired by illuminated manuscripts because I wanted to be dramatic and biblical with this antichrist story. The case is covered in brown faux leather with gold foil details. I also tried speckled (sprinkled ?) edges for the first time for the vibes. I’d definitely like to give it another try sometime! The cover art of Dan and Hess was commissioned from the incredible @pangolin2b-commissionopen!

Hii😊 hope you are doing great!!
Just wanted to say that I miss Hess and Dan🥺 in the meantime I've been reading path to paradise for the trillion time. Never get tired of it!
Hello! 🤗 I'm doing well, thank you! (Ridiculously busy as we roar towards the end of the academic year, but soon - soon there will be leave and then there will be writing! 😎) I hope you are doing wonderfully too! ❤️
Oh my gosh, what a lovely message. Thank you! I can't believe you've read P2P so much (and I'm honoured you have! ❤️❤️❤️) You know, I miss them too. Periodically, Hess comes along to gnaw on my brain as I think about the P2P AU, and the last oneshot (post-P2P) I have planned for them. Is it terrible I miss their toxic, toxic ways? I mean, it's such fun writing things like:
Hess: Dear diary. Today he only tried to kill me twice! I think he may be in love with me! :D
Dan: Dear diary. Today I only tried to kill him twice. I think I may be in love with him. D:<
Hmm. I've got itchy P2P writing fingers this evening @eklastuff - so if you want to send me a prompt, I think I could squeeze a little ficlet in sometime tomorrow! 😊

Vampire Academy (2014)
Tumblr media
Vampire Academy is fully aware of the tropes so many YA novel-inspired films indulge in. It understands what works about them, what to avoid, and desperately wants to distance itself from ”Twilight”. If only it had remembered to be good too. Thanks to Zoey Deutch, the film is by no means a chore to watch, and director Mark Waters does his best with the material, but this film is still frequently unintentionally hilarious.
Rosemary "Rose" Hathaway (Deutch) is a Dhamphir, half-vampire (or Moroi, as they’re called here), half-human, sworn to protect Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir, (Lucy Fry), a Strigoi vampire heiress. They're a more powerful, more evil breed of bloodsuckers who are vulnerable to sunlight, unlike the good ones. Got that? Too bad! When Rose and Lissa return to school after a year on the run, they’ve got to deal with classes, crushes, social cliques, and the possibility of mortal danger now that Lissa's newfound healing powers are revealed to the vampire world!
Vampire Academy suffers from TMSGO. Too much stuff going on! The first half-hour will leave you begging for a newbie who asks the people around them the questions you’re asking - a Harry Potter if you would. There’s an unending flow of exposition that tries to clarify the ins and outs of this world, but there’s no way you’ll be able to separate the stuff that’s going to be relevant now from the foreshadowing, and the breadcrumbs that would've paid off had the sequels this film desperately wanted actually materialized. If you’re familiar with Harry Potter (whom this film borrows liberally from), you’ll be able to just barely avoid drowning in the explanations. If you’re not, good luck!
Once the film slows down with the introductions, you’ll realize just how predictable the story is. When it isn’t flat-out nonsensical, anyway. Sometimes the characters know all about the outside world, as evident with their pop-culture references. At other times, they seem blissfully unaware of stuff like cellphones or guns. Maybe they're just not all that bright. Seems to me like some of the issues that come up could’ve been easily resolved if people used their brains or weren’t determined to be one-track jerks. There’s an awful lot of flagrant bullying happening here but the teachers never discipline anyone.
What's fun about Vampire Academy is that it consistently discovers new ways to suck more than a vampire in a tornado. There’s an action scene towards the conclusion edited so badly, it took me a moment to figure out that the characters were not, in fact, in the same room. And yet, it's somewhat charming. I credit the actors and Mark Waters' direction. Deutch is incredibly charismatic and charming. She’s got great comedic timing and even manages to sell some of the nutty developments and bits of information being crammed down our throats. There are funny and charming moments throughout, making me believe it’s the source material and the script that doomed this film, not the people who were on the front lines.
Vampire Academy is lousy, but had a sequel been made, it wouldn't have been inconceivable to convince yourself that things might've turned around. With all of the exposition out of the way, the characters firmly introduced, and the world ready to go on to bigger and better things, This could've been on the level of The Maze Runner instead of another The 5th Wave. (On DVD, March 24, 2017)

Break My Heart 1,000 Times by Daniel Waters
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Living in the aftermath of the Event means that seeing the dead is now a part of life, but Veronica wishes that the ghosts would just move on. Instead, the ghosts aren’t disappearing—they’re gaining power. When Veronica and her friend, Kirk, decide to investigate why, they stumble upon a more sinister plot than they ever could have imagined. One of Veronica’s high school teachers is crippled by the fact that his dead daughter has never returned as a ghost, and he’s haunted by the possibility that she’s waiting to reappear within a fresh body. Veronica seems like the perfect host. And even if he’s wrong, what’s the harm in creating one more ghost?
I enjoyed this book, but when it reach chapter 44 it started to be a bit confusing: police would look at Bittner more seriously as suspect for Mary's murder than what happens in the book, Kirk & Ronnie didn't seem to know that Bittner had a deceased daughter at all, but after being attacked (by Bittner, but they didn't see him) they got berserker against Bittner and Kirk had an argument with Pescatelli, mentioning Bittner's deceased daughter, even if he never mentioned to know about her before that moment. Also at chapter 48 Ronnie & Kirk had an argument for a stupid reason and Ronnie being angry at Kirk is a nonsense and at chapter 49 Kirk broke the camera, but few pages later Kirk seems to have a new one... I don't understand when or who gave him a new camera. This book leaves a lot of questions opened, like: what is The Event? Why it happened? If Madeline Bittner isn't the one who suggested to her husband to kill the girls to have their daughter back, who did it? Who was the entity impersonating Madeline Bittner to persuade her husband to kill? Why some ghost like Brian and Madeline seems to be more indipendent that the others? I don't know if there is a sequel or if this is a self-standing novel, but it seems to open a lot of unsolved questions to the reader.
