Moth of the Week

Hornet Moth

Sesia apiformis

The hornet moth is a part of the family Sesiidae or the family of clearwing moths. They get their common name predictably from how they mimic the appearance of the hornet. This type of mimicry is called Batesian mimicry, which is when a harmless species mimics the appearance of a unpalatable or defended species to protect themselves from predators. It was first described in 1759 by Carl Alexander Clerck under the name Sphinx apiformis.

Description This moth uses what called Batesian mimicry to resemble the hornet so predators do not want to eat it for fear of being stung. The adult moths have clear wings with yellow and striped black bodies. The number of stripes varies, females have two stripes while males have three. They are about the size of a hornet with the same jerky flight pattern when disturbed. The only difference is the hornet moth has more yellow and lacks the waist between the abdomen and the thorax.

Wingspan Range: 34 - 50 mm (≈1.34 - 1.97 in)

Females are larger than males

Diet and Habitat The larvae eat several species of poplar trees such as apsen (Populus tremula), black poplar (Populus nigra), and goat willow (Salix caprea). They prefer trees surrounded by heavy vegetation as those kinds show more evidence of infestation from larvae burrowing into trees. Adults do not eat.

This moth ranges over mainland Europe, Great Britain, and parts of the Middle East. It had also been introduced to America and Canada. They prefer open habitats such as parks, hedgerows, golf courses, quarries, fens, pond edges, and pits.

Mating The female moths attract males using special posterior glands to emit pheromones, usually soon after emergence. The male doesn’t seem to have any courtship behaviors as the two sexes are likely to begin mating as soon as they come into contact. Both males and females mate multiple times with different partners before the female beings laying her eggs.

Females prefer to lay eggs on old or isolated trees surrounded by vegetation. Females can lay from hundreds to thousands of eggs and exhibits no parental care. When comparing the number of eggs laid to the number of adults emerging per year, it is clear the large number of eggs laid is to make up for the large mortality rate between the egg and adult stages.

Predators This species of moth is primarily preyed on by magpies and great tits. Interestingly, these birds do not eat hornets despite eating this moth. An explanation for this is since these birds don’t eat hornets, the mimicry is less effective as they have any bad experiences with insects of this coloration. In fact, it can be suggested that the black and yellow coloration has the opposite effect: once the birds realize this moth is harmless and can be easily seen, they begin to actively seek them out.

Fun Fact The hornet moth is seen as a pest in the eastern United Kingdom due to a large dieback of poplar trees from larvae burrowing into them. However this dieback is not inherently caused by the larvae but instead from drought and human influences, which the larvae increase the effect of.

jon: common raven

this was a choice i made before i even finished listening to the podcast back in 2020. jon's 1000% a bird to me, and the curious nature of corvids works well here. plus, i think a bird so universally ominous as a raven works perfectly as a horror protag :P i used to draw raven!jon with a couple troodon traits, mostly just cus it was fun, but i wanted to make my designs more grounded for this iteration. made them plantigrade, didn't get silly with body styles like i have with mp100 designs.

martin: tan jumping spider

if you've been here for a while you'll know that my furry martin has gone through about two million iterations. he started off as a european pine marten, to bold jumping spider, to chinese pangolin, to nine-banded armadillo, finally to nurse shark.

out of all of these the spider and the shark are my favorites. i wanted to go back to the jumping spider though- the design is really fun and i wasn't able to get the expressions right, but i'm more confident in my skills now and i'm having fun with the design. i may revisit nurse shark at some point. i switched from bold to tan jumper- i originally chose bold just cus they're my favorite jumper, but their stark black/white and iridescent aqua coloration just doens't work for martin. so, the tan jumper!

sasha: southern flannel moth

another old choice. species chosen because of a friend's fic, pharos by right (another i'm planning to reread now that i'm dipping my toes back into tma..)! southern flannel moths are poofy and orange, and their caterpillars are those super painful teddybear ones. i really like the design.

not!sasha: red postman

wanted to have her be another lepidopteran, and with all the many examples of mimicry among the group i thought red postman was a fun choice. doesn't look anything like a southern flannel moth, but that's sort of the point.

tim: jackson's chameleon

yet another choice from the oldtimes- most of the main characters are, i've mostly switched around the more secondary chars. first suggested, i believe, by @/ofdreamsanddoodles. i think there's something very fun about chameleons being basically a living mood ring & tim's Descent s1-3 showing physcially not just through the worm scars but through like, constant stress coloration during s3.

melanie: eastern copperhead

one of my favorite choices. i have a young copperhead specimen named after her. this one is quite vibes-based, but i do really like the copperhead as a viper that is not deadly. and i'm always a sucker for the "animal perceived as scary and violent that in actuality only strikes when under extreme stress" thing in furry assignments.

georgie: triceratops horridus

another favorite choice. visually, i really like how this works out, and trikes as a social and protective animal works well. she's literally got a shield on her face. horridus was chosen because i like the shape of the head and horns better than prorsus.

basira: domestic cat (calico shorthair)

got a little cat/dog thing going on for dasira. i like the inversion of the usual cat/dog dynamic with their unhealthy devotion instead, and visually it just works very well for them both.

daisy: domestic dog (german shepherd)

yeah i know this one's an exceedingly obvious choice.

elias: barn owl. jonah: eurasian eagle owl.

it's the institute logo! it's him! barn owl for elias specifically because of its very sleek look, designing him went fantastically. also, i can make the eagle owl's face disk work as a mimicry of ben meredith's muttonchops, which i think is a fun design bit to give to magnus.

gerry: domestic dog (black doberman)

certified gerryguy @/gerrydelano's choice. to quote a discord message from 3 years ago (sorry ron): "i feel like.........my INSTINCT is some kind of canine because like. the whole symbolism thing about being either an obedient or rabid dog. something something muzzled all your life. being a dangerous figure if people only see the silhouette but you just want scritches and nobody'll get close enough to you." black dog symbolism + breed which has ears cropped and tail docked, unecessarily molded for a Purpose which the dog has no say in

annabelle: white-booted racket-tail

sort of my original choice- she used to be part white-booted racket-tail, part anna's hummingbird. kept with the racket-tail cus it's fun and very cute. i've had a couple people express surprise that she wasn't a spider, but i think that's way too obvious. hummingbirds, though- they steal the webs of spiders to use as material to make their nests, but can sometimes become trapped in the webs and eaten by the spiders themselves. which is probably the metaphor-via-fursona-assignment i'm most proud of in this whole list

jane: cabbage white

the cabbage white is a butterfly whose caterpillars are routinely parasitized by the parasitoid wasp the white butterfly parasite. in case you're not familiar, parasitoid wasps lay their eggs on (usually) caterpillars, which hatch on the still-living caterpillar, devouring it from the inside before eventually emerging from the consumed husk of the host. also, i really liked the image of parasitoid wasp larvae emerging from an adult butterfly, rather than a caterpillar.

michael: spiny softshell turtle

for michael and helen, i wanted to choose animals which were, in some way, their own home. turtle is an obvious choice- and spiny softshells are a favorite of mine, and sufficiently strange-looking.

helen: common hermit crab

oliver: black vulture

bit of an obvious choice, but i adore vultures so i had to. black vulture chosen because i think the monochrome color scheme + straighter face work better than a turkey vulture for him

peter: risso's dolphin

i really like the idea of a cetacean for peter and the lukases as a whole, a famously social animal for the seemingly contradictory nature of this lonely-but-huge family, plus with so many cetaceans being endangered getting that lonely angle (risso's specifically are not, though, as peter is lonely through his own choice, not by circumstance).

mike: caelestiventus hanseni

it's a dimorphodont. he feels like a pterosaur to me, and i like the idea of a vast avatar as a usually short-flying arboreal species, for the unnaturality/contrast of it.

jude: black kite

black kites are one of the species of kites known to intentionally spread fires by picking up burning sticks to flush out prey.

vaguely russian animals that are large and imposing but remain somewhat generic. which is the hog and which is the bear is not consistent.

dekker: mouflon

dekker has very much mammal vibes to me. the mouflon is a neat species of wild sheep. i think the noble, imposing but kind image of the ram works well for dekker as that sort of true-good hero figure, and mouflons in particular are very nice looking with good shapes. the statement giver in distant cousin describes dekker as "though he was slightly shorter than I was, it seemed like he towered over me." which i think this sheep works well with.

gertrude: great tit

i wanted all the main eye avatars as birds, just like how i give them all glasses. just a fun little treat for me. great tit was chosen for gertrude as a kind of classic british bird, and as tits in general are VERY fiesty despite their round and adorable appearance. i really like this image of a great tit posing with a dead mouse like it's a hunter with a trophy deer. the cheek markings also work really well to bring to mind the image of old person jowls.

vibes. also i like the idea of him as a spoiled domestic animal. if i remember correctly, this was also @/ofdreamsanddoodles' suggestion

manuela: gray long-eared bat

she's a bat. what's to say. WELL actually okay there's the perception of bats as blind but actually having quite good vision which i think meshes in a fun way with the dark, and the way manuela does her sciency stuff.

When you’re in an alpha/theta state of mind all the time, through scrolling yourself into a trance, being bombarded by high emotional world events — everything we read and digest visually, everything we hear and listen to, is programming us and shaping our values and beliefs.

TikTok is a great example of this. In 5 minutes, you can see death, violence, delicious food, and bouncing tits and ass to the most catchy tunes.

You are hypnotized and then programmed — desensitized to violence, porn and gluttony. The association of food, sex & violence create anchors and triggers in your mind.

Now imagine what happens when you’re watching a scary movie, eating popcorn and nachos, and making out with your person while you ‘Netflix and chill’

All of this seems so harmless to us, but that’s because we’ve been conditioned to become this way.

We have become the perfect citizens. And that’s what the plan always was, we just keep falling asleep right in the palm of their hands.

I know there’s a lot of them, but man there’s SO MANY GOOD BIRDS! There were a few times where people didn’t put what specific subspecies for some birds, so sometimes I’d have to choose one. I tried to choose one that represents that bird the best!

I don’t know when the polls will begin, I’m doing some research on the birds so that people can read about them before they vote.

As an Eastern Euro yourself how would you make the entire East Euro? (Since you said Himaruya screwed the whole region up). As someone who’s not from the region, my current thought is that if it were up to me there would be less blonds lol. Also: specific opinions on Russia, Ukraine and Belarus?

Russia - for me as a person who lives among them he's just... Too nice? Too well-behaved? Something like that. He needs just a little bit of spice, not too much. I would've also incorporated his sense of humor in some way, because it's a thing that is absolutely unique and IMO Russians have the best sense of humor in the world. And cartoons. Also his lack of organisation and general incompetence in EVERY SPHERE, I never saw that in Hetalia. Only his brutality. Shallow really. It must be there, that's what the Russians are mostly known for. Their main stereotype. He lacks carelessness

Belarus - I do get it. She's cold because of political reasons, only country in Europe to have death penalty... But I wish that she could also be warm. For example, yes, cold in the international arena, but comically warm and jolly among her friends. Belorussians are INSANELY nice and good people, like, I never met anyone on the same level. I absolutely love them and I am forever grateful to God for putting so many in my life. It's a miracle. I don't deserve this lol Also maybe a bit more play with Lithuania and Belarus, how he used to rule her, how she stole his coat of arms (xD), they're just a lot alike (same national bird etc). More spice in their relationship, not just Lithuania having a crush on her, but maybe accusing her of things, etc. Conversing about their love for potatoes. You know, things from everyday life that happen there.

Ukraine - Terrible. First of all, never met a Ukrainian without a tan in my life. They're reasonably positioned in southern Europe, the black sea... They're pretty dark although not all of them but I think it would be awesome if Bel and Russia were so pale and white and Ukraine tan but maybe still with blonde hair. It would contrast nicely. Tits, agreed. Poor gal? I don't think so, Ukrainians are quite strong and DEFINITELY NOT pushovers. What her design lacks are main events of Ukrainian history: Issues with Poland, nazi collaboration. Some edginess to her character. They're a bit nationalistic, but you can't blame them for it since how Russians and Poles treated them. (albeit they weren't exactly goodies either)

Latvia - I wish someone just read latvian history at least once in their lives. Just, one person, please. Hahaha. So basically, making Latvia more weak than Lithuania is a CRIME. At least more morally weak. Latvia had COLONIES, a great fleet, they were influenced with Germans, hence the better the development of his than that of Lithuania who was influenced by Slavs, LATVIA was the ONLY baltic state who fought the Nazis, who defended their country when they occupied them. Lithuania just let them in. He's just incredibly underrated, you can't just base his entire design on how he looks in 21st century. I'm not saying he's supposed to be buff and strong, because he is weaker in terms of military and sovereignty, but making him a woman I think would be very cool? Since the Latvian girls are the tallest in Europe. So making her tough in medieval times then making her weak in modern times would be pretty easy. They're way better than Lithuanians morally and behavior wise. Latvia is more liberal and easy going when it comes to ethnical issues, they don't really care that they're getting assimilated into Russia when Lithuania is really mean about it.

Lithuania - His name doesn't exist. The national clothes he's wearing in his design are incorrect, they look Ukrainian. Hair colour is very on point. Other than that, he has no right to be as nice as portrayed. They're usually mean and very passive aggressive. Terrible sense of humor. They're called the Italians of the North so that would be cool to see, making him the most emotional or in-your-face attitude out of all northerners. It's not good that his love for singing, the entire basis of that country - singing, was never put into spot. I think it should be mainly based off that. More pagan stuff, they had remaining pagans up until the 19th century which is unbelievable, and that religion still exists now, people practice it. Also its a bit hard to speak of it as one country because there's like 5 regions there and people in each one of them differ a lot. Samogitians don't even consider themselves lithuanian.

Hungary is way too nice too. Their politics or history are not nice at all, they have an attitude of an oppressor. She looks too normal, there's not much hungarian about her, give her some special features. Should be made into a duo with Poland since they both call themselves brothers.

Slovakia - should never exist and should never deserve own design and appearance in the series. Die Slovakia

Poland - Gay weak inconsiderate irresponsible annoying and lame. So 100% accurate. Very nice, I agree, good job Hima.

Also it would be cool to see Königsberg in the series!

Birds of Dorthonion

Flora, fauna, geography and environment of Arda Masterlist

Dorthonion was a region north of greater Beleriand. It was a cool region covered in steep slopes, conifer forests and Heath covered highlands. The mountain range Ered Gorgoroth bordered it on the south and above it was the fields of Ard Galen. It was inhabited by the Arafinwëan host following Aegnor and Angrod and later, the human host following Bëor. Nomadic and semi nomadic groups of the northern Sindar and Avari also possibly lived there

In the conifer forests: black grouse, willow tit, goldcrest, mistle thrush, pine grossbeak, common tree creeper, common redstart, black woodpecker, chiffchaff, coal tit, common raven, crested tit, wood grouse, goshawk, spruce grouse, black throated thrush, pine bunting, boreal owl

World building notes:

-The vague images of pine grossbeaks were embroidered on the blankets of Bëorian children using a diluted version of the dyes created from blood madder and coal. The name in Bëorian Taliska translates to pine song bird.

-The Arafinwëan host of Dorthonion as well as some of the Avarin groups hunt with birds of prey which are also used by some of the scouts. Kestrels and Harriers are the most commonly used species. The practice is less common than among the Noldor of Eastern Beleriand however.

-Feathers (usually of peregrine falcons or common kestrels) were also used as a method of communication among Arafinwëan scouts during the times of year where weather would allow for this, left in strategic locations, lodged into the earth or tucked into trees to indicate presence or dangers.

-Eggs of various ground species were eaten by the Bëorian population and there was a practice of burying the eggshells. This was learned from the elves of Ossiriand prior to their settling in Dorthonion.

-Birds eggs appear in Northern Sindar art, in or separate from nests. Though the eggs of certain species have different meanings, they are commonly associated more generally with fragility and defense. Their images may be created through pigments made from certain actual eggshells as well as minerals and plant based dyes. One common motif involves a nest of eggs upon a steep slope or cliff.

-Birds appear throughout Bëorian songs and poems. Most commonly mentioned are the general name for the “fisher birds” (wading and diving birds) seen on and around Tarn Aeulin, as well as several of the smaller songbirds found in the pine forests such as pine grosbeak, tree creepers, and thrushes. After the Bragollach the names for some species became lost or translated differently.

-Also it’s been a headcanon of mine for awhile that Baragund would take Morwen when she was a young child out to the cliffs to watch the birds. He would teach her to identify them by their call. She remembers a lot of them, even as an adult though they are called different names and their habits are often unfamiliar.

Tufted Titmice are a staple at many an Eastern USA feeder, in my experience. They've always been the second species to visit feeders I set up, coming in for sunflower seed, peanuts, and suet. Granted, the chances of attracting a titmouse are always higher if you live near proper woodlands or a tree-filled park.

Tufted Titmice belong to the tit family, a word which originally means "small". This family is incredibly vocal and often semi-social, with the young of the year often remaining with their parents in a loose family group until the next breeding cycle begins. This is typically seen as a safety measure, as tits of all kinds will sound the alarm if any danger is noticed- they're quick to chime into another bird's alarm call too, if they overhear a fuss.

Titmice nest in cavities in trees, so leaving up older snags is always appreciated (so long as they aren't a safety concern). Having a diet in insects and fruit, these little birds are great to have around as seed-dispersers, as well as pest management. And they're so damn cute, it's hard not to be happy to see a pair at the feeder.

01/01/2024-Lakeside Country Park

Photos taken in this set are of: 1 and 2. Redwings a smashing bird which I loved seeing at all three locations today and that I'm on an incredible run for seeing photographing over the past few days and this season, a fantastic thrush. 3. Some lichen which my first Goldcrest of the year a gem of a bird that I'm also doing well for of late weaved between. 4. Great Tit another bird I'm on a nice run for. 5, 7 and 8. My first Great Spotted Woodpecker, Ring-necked Parakeet and Cormorant of the year, three key year ticks for me today. The Great Spotted Woodpecker stole the show at Lakeside with captivating views of these charming and bold birds both between the lakes and moments after and near my first Green Woodpecker of the year in the eastern meadows, the Ring-necked Parakeet the first time I've ever ticked it for the year on January 1st was a revelation in the woods and the Cormorant like the glorious female Goosander that I saw on beach lake at the same time as it species I don't always see here but I'm on a very strong run for seeing this winter which has filled me with immense joy with turning up on New Year's Day made me euphoric. 6. Black-headed Gull in the rain. 9. Winter grass. 10. Violet flower and leaves.

My traditional New Year's Day Lakeside walk which I began doing annually ten years ago to start building my new bird year list an activity I love was a triumph, a lot of things I tried of going to certain areas to try and see birds paid off even when I don't see them frequently such as a Grey Wagtail I enjoyed flying down and bobbing in Monks Brook from the ford bridge. Pied Wagtail too, cheery Siskins in the lake side alders an evocative Lakeside winter sight and a massive species for me on New Year's Days over the years, Dunnock, the dependable Long-tailed Tits, Greylag Geese and an exhilarating view of a Sparrowhawk dashing over beach lake and plunging into the trees of the northern fenced off area alarming Chaffinch, Redwing and Woodpigeon alike an unexpected moment were other great sightings. Moorhen, Coot and Great Crested Grebe all year ticks and Blue Tit were other standout species. I was also pleased to take part in something else I have done so in recent years, the New Year Plant Hunt with as always at this time of year in flower gorse, the winter heliotrope, ivy, pineappleweed, daisies, dock leaves north of the site on the grass and rose hips good to see too.

TERTIARY WEEK

{Feb 5th ~ 11th}

After meeting up at church with a local Oxford relative of the wife of an associate of a friend (J), and meeting her sister and niece visiting from Brisbane, I was immediately invited along to their sightseeing trip the following day. The relief of spending time with Christian Australians again was tangible in my tendons. J showed us the passage to the elusive Turf Tavern, my new favourite eatery, and we spent a good plenty of time at the Natural History Museum and the Pitts Rivers Museum, seeing fossils, taxidermy, and plenty of old things. We even climbed the tower of the Church of St Mary to get the full Oxford tourist experience.

My classes are warming up and I’m excited to get into the thick of things. My art history readings are being enthusiastically read, my brown pen has made taking notes a transcendent experience, and I’ve been exploring new places to study around the uni. I’ve been sketching a lot of the architecture round about, but I hope to get into some painting soon — there are still some art supply essentials that I had to leave behind (for some reason, it's a fire hazard to have flammable liquids in a flying tin can) that I need to buy replacements for before I can get started with my oils again. 

A flatmate and I attended a lecture on women artists at Trinity College, and were confronted with just how much more funding Oxford Uni has than Brookes. I shall study there vicariously, and merely dream of affording the tuition.

I went out again another day with my Brisbanian friends to have morning cream tea at the quaint, four-buildinged town of Thrupp, and then travelled on to Woodstock, where we encountered a friendly little cashier, fully equipped with an ostentatious antique shoppe. We traversed our way onto the grounds of Blenheim Palace that had just the right atmosphere of obscurity and misty twilight from across the lake, so that when it began to rain, we weren’t even disappointed to leave. I almost don’t want to return to spoil the memory of it. We’ve had a baker’s dozen of wonderfully rainy days, so I’m getting the full English experience.

I met more people at two church services in one day than I met in my whole first week here. I have been attending a small baptist church on Sunday mornings and just visited a beautiful low-Anglican church for their evening service. I enjoyed that one too, so I may end up making myself a regular attendee at both services a week.

I’ve reached a point of familiarity with my surrounds that allows me to go about my day without being incomprehensibly overwhelmed by novelty, and I’ve also reached a point of exhaustion with the tourist mindset. I think these two come hand in hand to some extent. As I mentioned, I’m sick of taking photos, so I’m being much more selective now about what and how I capture the wondrous curiosities of my explorations.

My wildlife encounters so far have been with true Eurasian magpies (of the corvid variety, as opposed to the yodelling Australian magpie of the butcherbird variety), blackbirds and other thrushes, redbreasted robins, exquisite and minuscule blue tits, jackdaws, starlings, red kites (which I have since been told are the eagle-y birds from my entrance to Oxford) and the eastern grey squirrel. 

I am yet to locate any actual elms, despite living in the building of that name - so either the elms of Clive Booth Student Village Elm Block fame are hidden somewhere in their deciduous form, out of my sight, or else the building was named so because it lies on the grave that our lost elm brethren have lived, standing arrogantly in their stead, having won the great battle of urbanisation. 

In any case, it is always lovely to hear the church bells ringing out hourly through the cold, crisp air over the city on a Sunday.
