Although I know what happens to the white snake, I wanted to ask about her son, I think it is said that her son faced a fox (a Huli Jing?) to save his mother(?) Do you know anything about him or his name?
White Snake's son Xu Shilin (or Xu Mengjiao) confronts Fa Hai who is actually a Turtle Spirit. I'm not sure about a Vixen that they fought, I'm more familiar with a centipede demon being part of the story.
But then again I've only read like a few versions of the story and like none of the TV series so if you wish to watch the series or want to rea his baidu himself but let me know if you have a link where it says he fought a fox because otherwise, I'm not sure about that.

【About the "鬼子母神" 】
鬼子母神,also known as Hārītī (Sanskrit),is both a revered goddess and demon, depending on the Buddhist tradition. She is one of the Twenty-Four Protective Deities of Mahayana Buddhism.
In her positive aspects, she is regarded for the protection of children, easy delivery and happy child rearing, while her negative aspects include the belief of her terror towards irresponsible parents and unruly children.
In both Chinese and Japanese Buddhism, she is venerated as a protector deity, but in many folk traditions is often recognized as a female demon of misery and unhappiness towards children and parents.
In Chinese Buddhism, Hārītī is also known as Hēlìdì (訶利帝) or Hēlìdìmǔ (訶梨帝母). In Chinese tradition, she is one of the Twenty-Four Protective Devas (二十四諸天 Èrshísì zhūtiān), a group of Dharmapalas who are venerated as protectors of Buddhists and the Dharma.Statues of this group (and Hārītī) are often enshrined within the Mahavira Hall in Chinese temples and monasteries.

You know that popular fan theory how Ao Lie might be alive?
Weeell... I might have a crack theory for what the shows creators might be using as inspiration for his story.
Okay so, Ao Lie is better know as White Horse Dragon. Meaning, desbite him being very much green in his dragon form, we can argue that he is associated with colour white.
He has said that Mei, a character very much associated with colour green, reminds him of his sister.
In China, "Little Dragon" is a nickname sometimes used for snakes.
And as you probably know, there is a pretty famous Chinese story/legend about White Snake who has Green Snake as a younger sister.
A story where the said White Snake gets imprisoned and, depending on the variation, is either saved by her sister or her son.
And do you know what is the weapon the Green Snake used to save her sister in one of the variations her wikipedia page mentions?
(And we know LMK's creators use wikipedia because that is pretty much the original English source for name Ao Lie...)
*clears throat*
Twelve years later, she (Green Snake) had finally completed the True Fire of Samadhi, and came to find Fahai for revenge.
A green little dragon, who has True Fire of Samadhi and has a family connection with someone who has literally a word white in their name...

rambling about fujin and the white snake adeptus
ok so. i was watching videos of previous lantern rite playthroughs on yt (started playing at the end of january 2023 so i couldn't even take part in last year's) and looking back now after the 4.4 livestream, i thought maybe that 2022 mingxiao lantern was a nod to fujin, so i started digging and went down the rabbit hole basically and collected some things i found interesting.
NO LEAKS, everything written about here is mentioned in in-game items or is a part of chinese culture and legends, but some of it might be considered potential spoilers regarding chenyu vale
first, i wanna preface this by saying that i am no expert in chinese culture so please do correct me if i say something incorrect.
during the 2022 lantern rite they didn't mention which fallen liyue hero the lantern was for (or i missed it) but i found a really good post on hoyolab by Flora's cake.EN, talking about chinese customs and the celebration of the lunar new year. they say that the mingxiao lantern was based on the lantern with the fish pattern of the previous year's festival, and they also note that the lantern resembles carp and goldfish, how in chinese culture they symbolize wealth, fortune, and benefits, and express "people's yearning for prosperity, auspiciousness, and good fortune". this symbolism in chinese culture is very clearly transferred to the game too since we know from the stream that there is a well-known legend in chenyu vale about a carp adeptus named fujin and that "in local legends the golden carp is a symbol of good luck". they also talk about jademouth, a famous landmark left behind by an adeptus to protect the people from flooding, and mention the abodes of the white snake and the carp adeptus.
bai suzhen aka the white snake is the central figure of a chinese legend titled "the legend of the white snake". there are several versions and i'll be fully transparent, i haven't read them yet unfortunately. according to this article by Minjie Su, who researches medieval literature (and apparently had the same uni major as me lol) bai suzhen was originally an evil snake spirit, but later the story became a romance between her and a man, Xu Xuan. in one of the later versions, though she is still morally questionable (she "poisons the well to boost her husband’s pharmacy") she is devoted to Xu and sympathetic to humankind. Xu almost dies of shock when he sees her true snake form. (1) however, she "revives him and makes him believe the snake was but an illusion. Enraged, Fahai wages war against Madam White and holds Xu as hostage, Madam White commands water to rise from the lake to drown Fahai’s temple. She would have defeated the monk, if she did not feel sympathy towards the innocent townsfolk involved in her war. In the end, she surrenders to Fahai’s power and becomes imprisoned under the Pagoda, but not before her short reunion with Xu and the birth of their son. (...) she will never bee freed unless the palm tree before the Pagoda blossoms (...)" she is eventually freed by her son, though this action is not intentional, merely a coincidence. (2)
while searching, i also found this post by baoboatree on reddit, who did some huge work and re-translated the descriptions of the echoes of an offering artifact set. three things to note before i continue: 1) this part might contain POSSIBLE SPOILERS regarding the story of the new chenyu vale region, so proceed with caution 2) my chinese is not good enough to be able to compare the translation to the original and verify the information presented here (i am NOT saying it is incorrect and i'm certainly NOT trying to criticize baoboatree, just thought i should mention this) and 3) the post is relatively old, so some information might have been updated/re-written in-game and become outdated here. for these reasons, it's best to take it all with a grain of salt.
according to baoboatree's interpretation, the story "involves two adeptus - a "medicine adeptus" and a "carp adeptus". The two are bickering lovers/friends and lived near Chenyu valley. Until one day, the carp adeptus was sacrificed in an ancient ritual and loses her human form. She can no longer walk on land, but longed to see Liyue harbor. The medicine adeptus took her on a trip to Liyue harbor by taking her along in a Serenitea pot . (...) The fish adeptus is implied in at least four of the five pieces to have sacrificed herself again, becoming the sunken jade of Chenyu Vale. In at least one but maybe two legends, the medicine adeptus is implied to have become a tea tree that only grows in Chenyu Vale." they say the medicine adeptus may or may not be madame ping, which personally, i believe it's more likely they have something to do with the white snake adeptus (or is even the white snake adeptus themselves), whose husband was a pharmacist in the legend, and who stole medicine for him in another version of that legend.
i encourage everyone to read the whole reddit post, i found it fascinating and baoboatree really worked hard on it. i don't want to go into too much detail here bc this post is already way too long. when the medicine adeptus brings the carp adeptus to liyue harbor in the teapot, baoboatree also states that, in contrast to the official english translation, the teapot was not a gift from "a friend" but "friends", plural. now, this was actually something i could check, and it is absolutely correct. they theoretize that these friends might include madame ping, the role of the medicine adeptus and carp adeptus being clear. they also note in a comment that the fish lantern during lantern rite might have been representing the fish adeptus. looking back now, i would be surprised if it wasn't. hoyo has shown to pay attention to things like this.
as for why it were two fish, one might have been referencing this medicine adeptus, or one could have simply been put there to make it look more balanced, or to emphasize the wish for good fortune, or maybe there will be more to this that we'll uncover. either way, i'm interested in seeing how the story about this carp adeptus will unfold. if they try to stay close to the legend, it might have been the white snake adeptus that caused the flood which made the carp adeptus sacrifice herself. as for whether this white snake adeptus is the same as the medicine adeptus, honestly i think it could go either way. i could argue both for them being the same character and them not being the same. as of right now, i'm more inclined to think that they are different beings. (edit bc 1) i deleted my reasoning bc looking back it was just ehh and 2) bc i realized that i forgot to add this originally: obviously all of this is just wild speculation, and it could very well be that the story that we get, assuming we learn of these events, will be entirely different. the whole turning into a tree legend from the artifact set could also really just be an in-game myth, though i don't think that very likely, but who knows. either way, nothing even remotely certain can be concluded from the information i presently have.) of course i could very well be wrong, and hoyo will probably do their own take on this legend. after all, they have taken a looot of inspiration from nordic mythology as well (i might do some posts about that too, i was a scandinavian studies major so it's always interesting for me to see how nordic mythology is implemented in games/films etc).
anyway, if anyone read this whole thing, i hope you found it interesting. sorry that it was not very concise, i haven't slept in weeks so my brain is barely working lol. i'm really excited for chenyu vale and lantern rite and can't wait to see what this update brings!
(1) the author points out the storyline also has similarities to that of the french legend of mélusine but i don't have enough brain capacity to go into this as well.
(2) the wikipedia page states that Xu actually dies, and "Bai Suzhen went to Heaven to steal the immortal herb Lingzhi. She succeeded in her mission and used the herb to revive Xu Xian. (...) Bai Suzhen and Xiaoqing fought against Fahai and flooded the temple with water, hurting other living creatures.", however, i can't find this information in the relevant source.

I understand that Fahai was a monk and had powers to fight demons, I wanted to ask, could Tripitaka also do this? He is never seen fighting in JTTW, but I was wondering if he had powers? Can we say that the monks, in addition to the gods, could fight against demons? Or could we say that they exorcised the villages or protected them from these? Besides gods and monks, who others could fight demons?
I understand that Fahai was a monk and had powers to fight demons, I wanted to ask, could Tripitaka also do this?
It’s actually a very common trope that Buddhist monks can fight against demons. But Sanzang has never actually fought against Demons, nor are we familiar if he is trained in fighting Demons either.
We actually do see Sanzang USE this power in Xioyuji but with a ghost rather than demons. He has been shown to interact with spirits of the dead (or near-dead) and is able to communicate their wishes. He has done this with the hunter's grandfather at the start of the story he helped the grandfather move to his next life and with the King in the Lion-Lynx Arc to save the King's life. So while he is able to exorcist ghosts and interact with the dead we have not seen him use anything as powerful to exorcise demons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is never seen fighting in JTTW, but I was wondering if he had powers?
He could have the power to do exorcisms but I doubt he was ever trained to use said power in a way to fight demons. He is a scripture pilgrim and this his attention and study would be to scriptures rather than large exorcism.
Can we say that the monks, in addition to the gods, could fight against demons?
Monks can fight demons. That isn't too unusual to see in media or stories. It's a solid trope.
Or could we say that they exorcised the villages or protected them from these?
Monks can bless villages, people, and temples to help protect them from the supernatural, that is also a thing.
Besides gods and monks, who others could fight demons?
Daoist Immortals. That is a more common trope to see fighting demons, esp in modern media they are the more ones you think about fighting demons. This is most likely in that Daoist gods are usually the ones to fight demons in Chinese legends and as such the immortals follow as well. While monks CAN fight demons they are often more affiliated with helping humans and protecting people piror-to demons and Doaist Immortals are more what you think about facing demons if they are already there.

My interpretation of Legend of the White Snake has always been that despite being a thousand year old snake demon, the white maiden has never harmed a human being. She is capable of love, kindness, compassion, charity. She is more human with her humanity than many, many mortals in the world.
Therefore, Fahai's obsessive pursuit of her, set on separating her from her mortal husband with whom she was deeply in love in order to "save" his soul from her, followed by his imprisonment of her in the Leifeng Pagoda and taking her away from her newborn son, thus forcing her to be parted from her family for 20 years, is not only unjustified, but also paints him as the actual villain, despite being a Buddhist monk walking a path of goodness and righteousness. How could a disciple of Buddhas and bodhisattvas be less human than a demon is the irony of the story.

here's a... ship? trope? Thing. that I don't 100% get but find fascinating. full respect for folks out ther making art and content, and generally engaging in this... genre. trope.
【和尚的爱情】 [The Romantic Love of Monks]
Monks. The Chinese Buddhism flavor of monks, where they shave off all hair, denounce worldly possessions and family ties, and join a monastery. Specifically, these guys are committed to celibacy. Yeah on a logical level I'm like yeah, ok, this is a particular flavor of star-crossed lovers trope. But, I still, I.. it's too wacky funny to me. I.. I can't with the shiny cue-ball heads, PLEASE.
and there's. so much gorgeous art created. for this. uh genre? (Unfortunately it's typically m monk x f lead, and my limited exposure has yet to bring monk-flavored BL to my attention. I'm 100% certain it exists out there though.)
Anyway here's some popular media renditions of this, er, genre-trope. Please pray for my soul as I descend:
From Journey to the West, Tang Monk/Queen of the Kingdom of Women (西游记 - 唐僧/女儿国国王) (my rating: famous and classic, but there's something off about every rendition I've seen)
the 3rd installment of the HK Monkey King film series basically circles around shipping 唐三藏 with 女儿国国王. The Chinese movie title is 西游记:女儿国. There's some re-imagining/writing revisions from the source material, Journey to the West. The AMVs are spicy and the music is fire, and holy heck does the script/director want them to get together. The movie is corny, 孙悟空 is downright unhinged, the cg parts are too much, the pacing/tone is all over the place... a lot of this movie is weird. It's got mixed reviews but all the youtube comments love it idk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ok but also... that second poster/playbill 💀🤣 (the text at the top is a pun on 好运来 -> 好孕来) (to explain: the mpreg is canon in the og jttw, if you drink the waters from 母亲河 you get pregnant. That concept gave me nightmares as a child.)
and here's a wonderful cover/mix by JJ Lin. The original song 女儿情 appears in 1986 Journey to the West :
youtube
the song is POV the Queen of the Kingdom of Women in full pining mode for Tang monk. And the mix-insert of 菊花台? Seamless lyric inclusion. chef's kiss. I think someone else singing an arrangement based off of JJ's made it into the 女儿国 movie mentioned earlier.
2. Green Snake/Fahai (青蛇/法海) (my rating: based)
There's the recurring retelling insisting on pairing Green Snake with the Fahai, the Buddhist monk that traps her sister White Snake in the pagoda in the traditional telling of 白蛇传. Here's a fan AMV on youtube & a fan AMV on bilibili. Both take clips are from the 1993 HK movie 青蛇. Honestly? This is the ship I endorse the most and have the least issues with (love 妖x人/妖x仙 dynamics but also in some retellings 法海 is also 妖). Regardless, the 1993 film is a masterpiece, I wholeheartedly recommend a watch (and in Canto if you can find the original audio. I don't like the mandarin dub's audio mixing).
3. Faithful to Buddha, Faithful to You (不负如来不负卿). (my rating: cursed) UMMM this one is wonky with age and time travel making it questionably problematic so uh, you're warned.
This story started off as a webnovel and later got a live action series (afaik live action isn't finished?). For some unknown reason I watched it when the first season was airing... and... Forget that whole "getting together with a sworn-to-celibacy monk" thing being taboo, now we're time traveling and meeting said monk when he's 13 to become his tutor, and a few months later in your time, you time travel again to when he's 26. (FMC doesn't have feelings for him until she meets him when he's an adult but. Girl. This is still too weird okay?)
4. 少林降魔 Vanquishing the Demon (2020) (my rating: spicy [purely based on seeing an AMV])
this movie is solidly xianxia, and it looks pretty enough I'll watch it eventually. But, waow, this AMV clip. I think it made me understand how this genre!trope fits solidly into hopeless romantic/star-crossed lovers territory.
I'm probably missing a bunch of other pieces of media there's a looot of AMVs with clips from either CG donghua or video game cinematics but UM yeah hello. I didn't know this was such a thing. I'm not explicitly out there searching for BL monks okay *old man hacking cough* but I hadn't really found any... yet. The end result of my dive is... I guess I now find monks just a little sexier now, FML
