Ascendance of a Bookworm Translations
Hello, I'm Just a Bookworm with a B.A. in Japanese.
The translations posted on this blog are not supposed to replace the official releases of the light novel series by J-Novel Club.
For the most part, my translations are supposed to be relatively quick edits of the machine translations meant to improve readability. (In truth, they will be more like proper translations than anything. but...) They didn't go through an extensive editing process and minor mistakes may therefore be present.
I'm just translating whatever I feel like, whenever I feel like it. Please don't expect me to be consistent.
Please purchase the official light novel releases when they become available for the full experience!

𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐡𝐨𝐟 – 𝐆𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐭 𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐢𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐝

Was würde der Meister dazu sagen.

Part 5, Volume 2, Prologue (Ferdinand)
The purge had seen the second wife’s two sons reduced to archnobles, Detlinde’s older brother had perished in an unfortunate accident, and Aub Ahrensbach had died before Letizia (his oldest daughter’s daughter) came of age. Detlinde was thus having to serve as a temporary archduchess.
As there was no Lord of Winter to hunt in Ahrensbach, the duchy’s knights did not put special effort into their training.
Those in Ahrensbach had no need to socialize intensely and gather information before the snow grew unreasonably heavy. Adults in particular were afforded a lot more flexibility; nobles rarely spent all day in the castle, and children accompanied their guardians while socializing instead of spending that time in the winter playroom. Even the archduke candidate Letizia, whom Ferdinand was working to educate, had prioritized strengthening bonds with the others in her faction.
Ahrensbach nobles came together in the afternoon, when it was warmer. During the winter, they tended to stay inside until fourth bell and start their day after lunch—unless they were invited to lunch, that is. In contrast, during the summer when the sun beat down mercilessly, nobles barely went outside between third and fifth bell.

Ascendance of a Bookworm (24) Part 5 Volume 3 Chapter 4
This translation is not supposed to replace the official releases of the light novel series. Please purchase the official light novel when it becomes available!
Start of the Interduchy Tournament (Year 3)
"It's done! What do you think, Lady Rozemyne?"
The day before the Interduchy Tournament, shortly before lunch, Ignaz and Marianne left the brewing room holding two magic tools. Several scholar apprentices followed them.
"There are still a few things we want to improve. Remember this is only a prototype, but please have a look.”
Marianne positioned the sheet music, then slowly turned the handle of the magic tool to make it play the song like a music box. Ignaz combined a sheet of nanseb paper with the simplified magic circle and showed me how one of our books returned to its case. Both had finished the tasks I gave them with aplomb.
"Unfortunately, we do not have the time nor the mana nor the materials to make any further improvements before the Interduchy Tournament." Wilfried said.
"But if we present them as mere prototypes, they should receive a passing mark, don't you think?" Charlotte added.
Wilfried and Charlotte, who seemed to have aided the scholar apprentices, looked a little tired. Yet everyone wore a look of accomplishment on their faces.
"I think they are wonderful," I said. "You've accomplished much in such a brief period of time."
"You are absolutely right," Philine said. "Archnobles are amazing. Though I could use Lady Rozemyne and Lord Raimund's research to make suggestions and give advice, I would never be able to put a prototype together.”
Philine, who had locked herself in the brewing room with the others, looked at Ignaz and the others with respect. Due to the difference in mana capacity, there were apparently many mixtures a laynoble like Philine could not make.
"I am going to need a lot of mana to finish my lectures, so I want to compress it as much as possible between spring and autumn, but..." Philine said.
"In the meantime, we will increase our mana too." Ignaz gave her a defiant smile; he wasn't to be beaten that easily. I thought it would be nice if everyone would work hard together to increase their mana.
“How's the presentation coming along?” I asked.
"We will start practicing it this afternoon. Unlike before, it's our own research. So, we'll be fine." Ignaz answered. Presenting the advanced mixtures and magic tools they had worked on with Drewanchel's students would have posed a problem since they didn't fully understand their workings. But there was apparently no need to worry about a presentation on magic tools that they had built themselves from scratch.
"Lady Rozemyne, may I ask you to tell me a little more about Ehrenfest paper? Only what we may publish, of course." I readily accepted Marianne's request and spend the whole afternoon helping everyone to put the finishing touches on our joint research with Drewanchel.
Since I spend the entire day in the dormitory, the knight apprentices were able to spend their day training outside.
"The castle has started sending the pound cakes over. They are to be taken to the meeting room."
All attendant apprentices got up at once as Brunhilde called for their assistance. The pound cakes and cookies we had ordered from the Othmar Company were starting to pile up in the teleportation room. We had decided to serve sweets at the Interduchy Tournament that could be prepared in advance. Even so, considering the large number of visitors we were expecting, the dormitory kitchen could not handle all preparations. That's why we had asked the castle and the Othmar Company for help.
"The castle's and temple's kitchens must be very busy by now." I mused. I had originally asked the castle's chefs to prepare meals for Ferdinand, but they had been too busy with winter socializing and Interduchy Tournament preparations. For that reason, I had decided to rely on the High Priest's chefs at the Temple. I was sure they'd be able to make Ferdinand's favorite dishes.
As everyone busily moved around, the air was so full of excitement that it put me in high spirits.
"Lady Rozemyne, the second volume of Fernestine's Story has arrived along with the sweets. You promised to lend it to Lady Hannelore, didn't you? Shall I inform her by Ordonnanz that it arrived?"
Lieseletta brought me a crate with the new book inside. Muriel exclaimed "Oh my!" as she laid eyes on it. Her green eyes were shining with anticipation, but I needed the scholar apprentices to prioritize their preparations for tomorrow.
"I will inform her myself," I said. "Muriel, you may read it after the Interduchy Tournament. Remember I haven't read it yet either."
"Indeed, I will keep it safe for you until after the Interduchy Tournament, Milady."
As Rihyarda took the book to drive her point home, I replied with a meek "Ahh." As Muriel continued the preparations while mumbling "I want to read it as soon as possible." to herself, I knew exactly how she felt.
When I informed Hannelore of the arrival of the second volume, she cheerfully replied “I'm looking forward to it.”
The morning of the Interduchy Tournament began with a sweet smell filling the dormitory. The kitchen had immediately started making more sweets after they had finished the sandwiches and soup that would serve as our breakfast.
All students finished their breakfast earlier than usual to finish the final preparations for the Interduchy Tournament. The attendant apprentices instructed the servants to carry all the sweets out of the meeting room. The knight apprentices due to compete in the ditter tournament were getting their final practice in, while the lower year knight apprentices were instructed to guard us Archduke Candidates.
"Well then, let's get going." Wilfried said.
Wilfried and Charlotte began to move after calling out to the scholar apprentices. I also wanted to help them set up the venue, but I was told "I'm anxious to have you walk around with only lower-year knight apprentices to protect you." by Wilfried.
"We don't know how the students from the lesser and middle duchies that interfered with our ditter match against Dunkelfelger will act. We have requested the Knights Order to send extra guards this year. Please stay in the dormitory until they arrive."
He had left me no room to complain. So, I saw Wilfried, Charlotte, and the scholar apprentices off with a meek "I will. Please take care of the preparations". I knew we had no other choice as it was too dangerous, but I certainly felt lonely by myself.
There were still some people busily moving in and out of the dormitory to finish the final preparations, but the common room was completely deserted. As I looked over the empty room, Rihyarda rested her hand on my shoulder as if she were worried about me.
"Milady, would you check the tea party room with me? We've finished the necessary preparations to welcome Lord Ferdinand and Justus."
"I will."
I followed Rihyarda to the tea party room. You could enter the tea party room through the door closest to the stairs leading to the kitchen. Rihyarda unlocked the door and opened it. Bearing in mind that we had hosted a tea party with representatives from all duchies last year, I already knew the tea party room was quite large. Today it was roughly divided into three sections with partitioning screens as if it were a proper room.
"I have prepared the sofa for Lord Ferdinand to sleep on at the far end of the room. As you requested, we brought the one from Ehrenfest."
It was the new, cushioned sofa that he had ordered from Zach. Since it would be difficult to have it delivered from Ehrenfest, the others had initially expressed their disapproval, but I was still convinced it would be much more comfortable to sleep on than a regular wooden sofa lined with cloth. I pressed on the cushioned part to check its softness and nodded with satisfaction.
“The bedding is in this crate. I will have Justus will take care of the rest. I assume there are things he must verify with Lord Ferdinand even in the presence of the Ahrensbach retainer.”
Other than the wooden box holding the bedding, there was a chest to store one's luggage in and a magic tool to turn the lights on right next to the sofa. The area surrounding the sofa was shielded off with partitioning screens.
"I couldn't prepare a canopy, but I think these screens should allow Lord Ferdinand to rest more easily." Rihyarda said.
She had also prepared a chair for the attendant on night watch. The far end of the room had been turned into a full-fledged sleeping area. In the middle section stood a table with a large number of chairs. I could guess this meant we would have dinner together.
"The Aub is supposed to have dinner with the students after the Interduchy Tournament and praise their efforts, so he wants you and Master Wilfried to entertain Ferdinand in this room. It seems Lord Sylvester will join you after dinner." Rihyarda explained.
Only moments after I rejoiced over the prospect of having dinner with Ferdinand, I realized the possibility of our meal turning into a lecture. I decided to heed the advice Eckhart once gave me and bring up the topic of research so I might avoid a lecture.
"Rihyarda, I would like to give the materials I received from Professor Hirschur to Lord Ferdinand. Please also prepare paper and ink for him."
"I already have." She replied.
Rihyarda was the best! She knew what she was doing. Now, let's think up some topics to discuss over dinner. Ferdinand seemed to be hungry for research, so it would be best to focus on just that.
"Then, the section closest to the door is set up for his retainers." Rihyarda said.
She had prepared crates to store luggage and bedding for them, but it was overall much simpler than the space for Ferdinand. Would this be good enough?
"Eckhart is a knight and Justus wanders all over the place. They can sleep about anywhere.” Rihyarda explained. “And his Ahrensbach retainer will certainly be too nervous to sleep."
Rihyarda went on to explain that his Ahrensbach retainer was unlikely to sleep in a tea party room that could easily be accessed from the dormitory by Ehrenfest. Ferdinand, Eckhart, and Justus considered Ehrenfest to be a trusted home, but his Ahrensbach retainer certainly would not.
"That's why it's unnecessary to prepare more elaborate sleeping spaces for his retainers,” Rihyarda said. “Moreover, students from other duchies will be coming over to pick up graduates after breakfast, so we prioritized practicality over comfort. We don't want it to feel lived-in."
Just as Ferdinand would be picking up Detlinde, students from other duchies would come to pick up graduates from Ehrenfest. As soon as Ferdinand and the others finished their breakfast, the room would have to be readied to welcome them.
"I see you put a lot of thought into it,” I said. “Thank you, Rihyarda. Please extend my gratitude to the other attendants as well."
"I will, Milady." She replied.
Confirming that everything was ready, I returned to the common room.
"Good morning, Lady Rozemyne."
While I was checking the tea party room, the graduates' parents had started to arrive. A stream of parents, clad in gorgeous clothing, passed through the dormitory to the venue where the Interduchy Tournament was held. As I watched the people flow in, I spotted Cornelius, Angelica, and Hartmut among the crowd that appeared from the teleportation room. All three of them were dressed in gorgeous clothes just like the other visitors.
"Good morning, Lady Rozemyne." Hartmut said.
“Why did the three of you come to the Royal Academy?" I asked confused.
"I'm here to see how my fiancé is doing," Hartmut said. "Besides, I must explain to Clarissa's family that the situation has changed and ask them for forgiveness."
It was highly likely that her parents would want to break off the engagement because he had become the High Priest. As I silently blamed myself for his fate, Hartmut addressed me with a smile. "It's not something you need to worry about, Lady Rozemyne. Considering the Zent himself participated in the dedication ritual led by you and the reputation of the Temple is starting to improve, I don't think they will object too strongly. Besides, even if they object, Clarissa will surely still wish to come to Ehrenfest. One of the things we must discuss is how to handle that situation."
"...that certainly sounds like a matter that needs to be discussed." I agreed with a giggle, remembering Clarissa’s fierce personality. She certainly was the type to make a headlong rush into Ehrenfest, so it would be necessary to take countermeasures.
"Cornelius are you also here to see your fiancé? Are you curious how Leonore is doing?" I looked at him with a teasing smile. If he was here to support his fiancé, it would be fine to treat him like family today, and not as my guard knight.
"Yes, that's the excuse,” Cornelius said. “In truth, I was told to attend so I may strengthen your guard detail while blending in with the crowd. I'll watch Leonore's efforts together with you, Rozemyne.”
I cheered up a little hearing Cornelius' words. I had to tell him all about how hard Leonore had worked this year.
"I get the two of you are here to support your fiancées, but Angelica doesn't have a fiancé attending the Royal Academy, right?" I asked.
“I am here to see for myself if Traugott has become strong enough to become my husband. If he hasn't, I could get engaged to Lord Bonifatius though..."
Angelica looked a little sad as she said this. From an outsider's perspective, the younger Traugott was the more age-appropriate marriage candidate than the elderly Bonifatius. However, from Angelica's perspective, their strength was all that mattered. In that regard, Traugott was no match for Bonifatius.
"...well, that's the excuse at least. In truth, Angelica agreed to come so she could avoid learning the names of the gods." Cornelius shrugged his shoulders with an exasperated look on his face. It seems that the interests of Angelica, who had wanted to escape the study sessions, and Bonifatius, who had wanted to avoid marrying a girl the age of his grandson, had overlapped beautifully.
"Angelica, the divine protection of the gods will allow you to get stronger,” I said. “...at the very least, you should remember the names of the Supreme Gods, the Eternal Five, and any other gods whose protection you desire.”
"If that's all I need to do, I'll give it a try." Angelica said.
At least she seemed a little more motivated now. Lady Lulladie of Jossbrenner received the divine protection of the Goddess of Sprouts by praying to her. Angelica must start by learning the names of the Gods whose protection she wished to obtain and pray to them.
"Speaking of which, is Damuel staying in Ehrenfest?" I asked since I hadn't spotted Damuel yet. The teleportation circle could only move three people at a time, so it was possible he'd arrive later, but Cornelius shook his head.
“Since he excels at sensing mana, it would have been great to have Damuel here to monitor the former Veronica faction, but unfortunately he didn't have an excuse to visit the Royal Academy.”
"I advised him he could just make up a lover, but he bemoaned that was no option." Hartmut said.
"Hartmut, please don't bully Damuel with such a refreshing smile!” I chastised him. “Damuel cannot find himself a lover, let alone get married. Don't just boast about going to see your own fiancée, then tell him to make one up for himself. That's too cruel!"
I sucked in a sharp breath. Hartmut’s words certainly had shattered Damuel's fragile heart. I could easily picture Damuel's pitiful figure, unable to complain to Hartmut, who was an archnoble. As I voiced my complaints, Hartmut looked at me with a small chuckle, showing no remorse whatsoever.
“I only suggested it because I believe Damuel will be able to find someone if he puts his mind to it. Don't you think it's much crueler that you have already decided he will never find a lover, Lady Rozemyne?"
"Aah!?"
…Maybe he is right. I'm so sorry, Damuel. As Hartmut said, I totally wrote you off. I should believe that Damuel can find a lover if he puts his mind to it. Ahh, I'm not worthy to be his master!
From now on, I would believe in Damuel. I was sure he would be able to find a cute girl if he put his mind to it.
As these thoughts occupied my mind, someone slapped me softly on the back.
"Well, my problem daughter, have you been behaving today?"
As I turned around, Sylvester looked down at me. He had bags under his eyes and was a bit hollow in the cheeks. He looked a bit pale too. The aftermath of the purge was clearly weighing on him.
"It's been a while, Sylvester....you look exhausted." I said.
“Whose fault do you think it is?” He asked. “I'm going to give you the lecture of your life when we get back to Ehrenfest."
I gulped as he started poking my cheeks. This was going to be a lightning strike of great intensity.
"Um, would you like me to give you one of Ferdinand's rejuvenation potions to restore stamina?" I offered.
"Do you want to kill me?" Sylvester said in disbelief. Though I had made the offer with the best of intentions, he was staring daggers at me.
"I didn't intend to give you one of the potions so vile it would kill you,” I explained. “It's one of the easy-to-drink, kindness-infused potions. I still have some left that I prepared to distribute after the dedication ritual..."
"I appreciate the offer, but I'll get drowsy if I take one now,” Sylvester said. “If you're ready, let's go."
As he lightly slapped me on the back to urge me on, I instinctively looked around. Though all the knights had already arrived, I didn't see Florencia anywhere. Nor did I see Karstedt, who usually accompanied Sylvester.
"Sylvester, where are Florencia and father? I can't seem to find them..."
"I decided to leave Karstedt and Bonifatius at the castle to keep an eye on what's left of the former Veronica faction,” Sylvester explained. “...and Florencia looked like she would pass out in the middle of the Interduchy Tournament, so I told her to rest today."
"Eeh!? Is... Is she all right!?" I had only ever seen Florencia with a calm smile on her face.
As I inadvertently raised my voice, Sylvester shook his head and said, "That's why I had no other choice but to make her sit out the Interduchy Tournament. It involves a lot of interaction with other duchies. It’s a burden far too great for her right now. ...I'll head back to Ehrenfest tomorrow morning to check up on her. If she seems to be doing all right, I'll allow her to attend the graduation ceremony. At the graduation ceremony, all she has to do is sit and watch, so I assume it should be manageable."
Last year we had been busy all day, hosting one visitor after another. And this year we expected to receive even more visitors, mostly from duchies that attended the Dedication Ritual. Such intense socializing was not something one should do while feeling indisposed.
“This year, we'll split up into two teams,” Sylvester said. “You and I, and Wilfried and Charlotte. You caused one problem after another. Just thinking about the visitors we'll have to host makes my head hurt."
"...I'm sorry."
I hurriedly finished my preparations and headed to the venue where the Interduchy Tournament was due to be held with Sylvester, our attendants, scholars, and guard knights. On the way there, I informed Sylvester how hard everyone had worked to make our joint research and ditter match a success. We also discussed what to expect of today's socializing.
“Please show us your cloak and brooch.”
At the entrance there were several Sovereign Knights, checking the cloaks and brooches of anyone entering and leaving the venue. Apparently, the terrorists from last year had used brooches issued by Werkestock to enter the Royal Academy.
Since we were accompanying Sylvester, the Aub of Ehrenfest, we were allowed inside after just a quick check.
Sovereign Knights were stationed all throughout the venue, and the atmosphere, in general, was much more uptight than last year. While most of the Sovereign Knights observed their surroundings with a watchful eye, quite a few wore an uncomfortable look on their face. This precarious state would likely continue until either the Zent found Grutrissheit, or someone located the Foundation of Werkestock.
"Rozemyne, where is Ehrenfest's spot?" Sylvester asked.
“I think it's the spot where a lot of bright ocher cloaks are gathered,” I answered. “I was told to stay in the dormitory until you arrived, so this is my first time entering too."
Besides, I was too small to see beyond the Knights surrounding us.
"I see," Sylvester replied with a satisfied smile. "You have taken measures to ensure your safety."
"Please praise Wilfried, not me. I was planning to help with the preparations." I confessed.
"...you need to be more concerned about your own safety." Sylvester said with a sigh.
We passed through crowds of colorful cloaks until we finally arrived at Ehrenfest's spot.
"Aub Ehrenfest, Lady Rozemyne. This way please." Brunhilde guided us to our seats. Sylvester informed everyone of Florencia's absence, and how we would proceed today.
"Mother won't be attending, is she all right?" Charlotte asked.
"Don't worry, it's nothing too serious,” Sylvester answered. “Florencia may be able to join us tomorrow. But she will get worried if we mess up today. So, keep it together!"
"Yes."
Wilfried and Charlotte were sitting together at a table, while I teamed up with Sylvester. Sylvester positioned his chair in such a way he could slap me on the leg if necessary and told me "Shut up if I hit you."
Our guard knights lined up behind us. Hartmut, Cornelius, and Angelica stayed close to me while blending in with the parents.
"I expect Dunkelfelger will be your first visitor.” Cornelius said with a wary face. “Their Aub keeps looking at us and seems ready to bolt in our direction at any moment."
Dunkelfelger's spot was diagonally in front of us, on the other side of the venue, so it was easy to observe. When I enhanced my vision, I could see Aub Dunkelfelger and his guard knights standing on the very edge of the duchy's spot. It looked like Hannelore was trying to stop him by desperately clinging onto his blue cloak.
…She seems to be having a hard time. I'm so glad I wasn't born in Dunkelfelger.
Then a slender woman approached them and after a short exchange of words, Aub Dunkelfelger sat back in his seat. The slender woman was probably his first wife. Next to Lestilaut sat a girl wearing a familiar hair ornament. His fiancée perhaps?
"Is that Lord Ferdinand? I see some ocher cloaks in Ahrensbach's spot."
In response to Hartmut's voice, I turned my gaze to the spot next to Dunkelfelger. I spotted three bright ocher cloaks among all the lilac. That must be Ferdinand, Justus, and Eckhart. I watched them move about while resisting the urge to lean forward.
I could tell Ferdinand rubbed his temples after Raimund desperately explained something about the shumil stuffed animal in the research exhibition spot. Justus put his hand over his mouth to stifle a smile. It seemed the shumil stuffed animal was quite well received. I wished I could have been there to show it to Ferdinand with Raimund, but Ahrensbach's spot was on the other side of the venue and terribly far away.
"Lord Ferdinand won't be joining us?" I muttered.
“He will come by to say hello later. He's already performing official duties over there, and he must spend this year spreading the word of his engagement." Sylvester replied.
I would be able to give Ferdinand Heishittze's cloak when he came by to say hello later. As I looked at the wooden box that Rihyarda had prepared, I felt my body relax.
"Now, it's time to play some ditter! Get down when you are called!"
As Rauffen announced the start of the ditter competition, the Interduchy Tournament officially kicked off. Klassenburg was the first duchy to be called.
At the same time, I saw a group of Dunkelfelgers coming our way. Though we were seated right across, they had to go the long way round to reach us. The Aub's first wife gracefully led the group, accompanied by Hannelore, who had to jog a little to keep up.
…Huh? Where's Aub Dunkelfelger?
Their Aub, who not so long ago had been ready to bolt our way, had apparently been told to stay behind with Lestilaut because he remained seated.
…Probably because it would be a problem if he demanded another ditter match?
As I tilted my head in thought, my attendant apprentices began to prepare for Dunkelfelgers' arrival, and Sylvester straightened his back.
"Look alive, Rozemyne. They're coming. ...the plan is to have Dunkelfelger give up on your hand in marriage, while we refuse to take Hannelore, right?"
"Yes!" I said.
The last thing we wanted was more trouble, so we'd be satisfied if Dunkelfelger stopped pressing I break off my engagement with Wilfried.
"Wilfried, Charlotte. We will take care of the greater duchies, starting with Dunkelfelger.” Sylvester said. “I ask the two of you to take care of any other visitors."
Wilfried and Charlotte nodded in understanding. Hartmut and the other scholars prepared paper and ink, while Cornelius and Angelica positioned themselves such that they may protect me if necessary.

Karl Meissl or Carl Meisl
Carl Meisl (June 30, 1775 in Ljubljana - October 8, 1853 in Vienna), was an Austrian official and playwright, a contemporary of Johann Nestroy, Franz Xaver Tolds, Josef Alois Gleichs and Josef Kilian Schickhs.
After the Matura in Ljubljana Meisl went into civil service. He became a Fourier and progressed to k.k. Accountant and Field War Commissary.
The completion of his career was the appointment to the Accounts Council of the Marine Department of Pre-war accounting. As such, he retired in 1840.
Meisl was next to Adolf Bäuerle and Josef Alois Gleich one of the most important representatives of the Viennese folk comedy before Ferdinand Raimund. Meisl was also known for his parodies and travesties of serious dramas and operas.
