Sorry to be talking about hxh on main again after all these years but i’m going slightly insane after the last update. After years of writing about how i believed the Kurta clan has been murdered probably because of the D-Hunter book Sheila had given Kurapika (this post more or less have the outline of the theory in it), while at this point we didn’t know anything about Sheila, the last chapter just. 

Showed that Sheila was a childhood friend of the Phantom Troupe???? That she was already reading the D-Hunter book then????

It’s not “theory confirmed” at all, at least not yet, but it’s at least setting pieces in a position that fits this theory again i’m going insane.

the other theory of the post i linked is also disproven this chapter re: regarding Sharlnark, but i don’t really care much about this part of the theory i linked, i’m just, only focusing on the book. I’ve been arguing for years that the Troupe must have attacked the village because of Sheila and the Book and the new chapter really just say “well, they DID know each other...? <3″ at me. Excuse me.

Hiiii you should talk about why you love pakunoda a lot, I absolutely did not glom onto her when I was watching through hxh 2011, but I am so excited to be sold on her. Sorry if this is the wrong blog to ask on!

I'm so glad you asked :) I also didn't really click with Pakunoda after watching the 2011 anime. I thought she was neat but that was it. But the 1999 anime (and ova) gave her a bit more time in the spotlight and developed her character A LOT more and once I watched that I was obsessed.

(Honestly I think the 1999 anime is better than the 2011 anime in general but that's a topic for another time)

Any time I go into the Pakunoda tag I get so mad because a lot of people tend to make her one personality trait Being A Woman. And I suppose it's my own damn fault for becoming obsessed w a female character in a shonen anime, especially one that only shows up for one arc (and a flashback in the manga).

Okay I'm gonna start with actual canon evidence (meaning like. literally any scene that has her in the 1999 and 2011 animes and the manga) of her personality/character before I delve into my insane theories/headcanons. Also spoilers for the manga obviously I'll try to keep the most spoilery bits to their own section

So Pakunoda doesn't get a lot of screen time and before the hostage exchange situation, she's pretty passive. She doesn't speak much and in the beginning of the York new arc, she's chilling with chrollo at the hideout. She doesn't get an active part in the story until the blackout happens and she decides to ignore chrollos orders to save him. Before this, the phantom troupe were like. Not generic villains, but they haven't had a chance to truly show their motivations. As far as the audience could tell, they were villains through and through and didn't have any sympathetic qualities. During the hostage exchange plot, we see a sympathetic side to Pakunoda and the rest of the phantom troupe and the troupe becomes more nuanced as characters. Not only do we see the spiders loyalty to chrollo, we see it's not as simple as "aw the villains wanna save their friends too just like the heroes" though that is part of it. It's made clear that some of the troupe considers following chrollos orders true loyalty, while Paku, shizuku, machi, nobunaga, and kortopi think saving chrollo is more important. Pakunoda even admits this would be seen as a "betrayal" because she's ignoring chrollos orders and compromising the safety/integrity of the troupe by valuing his life above all else. She says "consider me betraying the spider for your sake" when she decides to follow Kurapika's demands and go through with the hostage exchange. her loyalty differs from most of the other spiders because she's loyal to chrollo ABOVE her loyalty to the spiders. While I'm sure most of not all the spiders consider him a friend, they value his leadership and his orders above that. 

Also everyone talks about how chrollo and kurapika are parallels and like they're not wrong but kurapika and Pakunoda are just as similar if not more so and melody even points it out (internally) during the negotiation!

Melody says "[Pakunoda] who you despise with everything you have is driven by the same motive as you. She wishes to save her friend, her boss." 

Kurapika doesn't realize this because he's still clinging to the mindset that the troupe is a group of bloodthirsty heartless monsters, when in reality they are complex people with the same motivation as him, especially Pakunoda. The only reason kurapika is able to get Gon and killua back safely is because Pakunoda is just as desperate to get chrollo back safely. 

(Manga spoilers here kinda)

In the phantom troupe backstory, we see that Pakunoda was closer to chrollo than any other member of the phantom troupe. she refers to him as her "little squire/little brother" (depending on which translation you read) and says she likes how kind he is

gonna throw one of my headcanon/theories in here but like. i feel like pakunoda still thinks of chrollo as that sweet kid who everyone had to look out for. i think part of her yearns to just be happy and carefree with her friends again. I didnt mention the ova's extended scene with the cat before now because i feel like thats the scene everyone points to when they say they like pakunoda. but i think it's even deeper than "pakunoda is nice to cats" because in the ova, the cat represents her and the troupe. while she takes the cat back to its colony, she flashes back to her time in meteor city when the troupe was first formed. not only that, but the cat has purple eyes like paku does (in the 1999 anime) and the black cat is positioned on top of the slide like how chrollo is positioned on top of the junk pile. i think thats when pakunoda made her decision to go back to the troupe and share what happened during the exchange, though she knew it would cost her her life.

Tldr; Pakunoda is (almost) singlehandedly carrying the phantom troupe's reputation as well written and nuanced characters and people tend to forget that

I also love u bringing up Killua's strategical prowess, intelligence, a good ability to read other people, etc. And how ride and die and loyal he is/can be. And other stuff too ofc. I also love the comparison u made with Killua and onions. And the Gojou and coconut comparison was interesting.

Anyways, that was a really interesting (and good) post u made!

I hadn't been too bothered by the Killua and Kakashi with each other or the comparisons with them and Gojo, mainly because I feel like it came from a huge place of love for Killua and Kakashi (so people thinking they were alike is just them loving both characters. Or people thinking of these characters when it comes to Gojo. Thinks comes mainly from a place that they love these characters, so they would want them to see them again in some other form. Like in Gojo).

Though, I can why you and other people in the tags think the comparisons between Killua and Gojou would be slanderous to Killua (I could see the same argument being made that it is slanderous to Kakashi too). And why people wouldn't like it and/or be annoyed by it. (I think even said to a friend of mine, that Gojou was like a ripoff of Killua and Kakashi, but not anywhere near as good. Which, might have been a bit harsh on my part. But like I have said; I like Killua and Kakashi more than Gojou. And I don't hate him, from the bits and pieces I have seen of him). Killua and Gojo and Kakashi and Gojou are very characters after all.

U bring up Leorio and Gojou comparisons and/or reactions to those comparisons, and those seem to skew both more positive and negative, same with the Gon and Geto comparisons and/or reactions to that.

Still amazes me people were trying to compare Killugon to Geto x Gojou. Like, u could think there was something going on between Geto and Gojou all u want, but from what I have seen of them, I don't really see the similarities between them and Killugon.

(Also, I just think Killugon is just the better relationship and ship personally. Even though I don't have anything people liking Geto and Gojou and shipping them).

Last of all, I know u are annoyed by like Gojou, Geto, and/or Gojou x Geto fans, and them invading ur comfort HxH fandom tag(s), which, I get. I am not too into the JJK or the fandom, so I don't completely get it, but I get u feeling like that.

I will say though, on the SPOILERS:

Gojou death thing, I was reading and watching some stuff about that, and while yes, while some people are upset a "sexyman" died or I character they loved and/or etc. of theirs' died (which, I think people being upset that a character they loved died is a [pretty] normal reaction. Though sometimes reactions to this kind of thing; talking generally here, can be weird and/or bad. For both good and/or bad reasons), honestly, I saw a lot of people saying that they didn't mind and/or expected Gojo to die; they just didn't like how it happened and some of the implications of the fight and for characters and even stuff going into the future. I saw even people who wanted Sukuna to win, not really liking how it was done either. To be fair for some of the people who didn't like how Gojo died.

I also saw people basically saying that Geje's hate for Gojo got in the way of certain things, and I could see that too. Sometimes loving or even hating a character can cause great writing and stuff, but sometimes it can cause not-always-the-greatest and/or more mid writing, to even bad(-ish) writing. Also, I saw someone bring up how Gojo and Sukana's fight should have been more like Netero and Meruem, instead of what they got (honestly, maybe the fight should have been more like Chrollo and Hisoka, hmmmm??). Reading and watching stuff about the Sukana and Gojou fight and Gojou's death, has been a, trip and interesting, I guess, to say the least.

Alright, finally done w/ these asks. I got really long and rambly w/ these. I just had a lot of thoughts about (all) this.

I don't know anything about Kakashi, so I can't comment on that. But I sympathise with his fans who have to deal with Gojou allegations.

The problem with some of the Gojou fans is that they have been making the JJK tags insufferable since long before I've even started looking at those tags. I've mentioned it before but you will regularly find posts with manga caps/ screen caps of other characters, with other character tags, scenes that are important for those other characters, and some deranged Gojou/Getou fan twisting that scene and making it about Gojou, Getou or the both of them. It's honestly kinda scary to read text posts in this fandom because there's just so much of that. And Gojou and Getou exist so much as fanon. People completely pretending that Getou wasn't a fascist, that he was justified in murdering his whole family, that it's somehow wholesome that he took in two abused girls and indoctrinated them into his genocidal cult. Or people pretending Gojou was somehow a caring person, and his relationships with his students weren't utilitarian. That he also didn't flirt with supremacy and might makes right, he just didn't go as far as Getou. That Megumi doesn't react to Gojou like traumatised kids react to their toxic parents. And much much more, I've written extensively what I think of what Gojou was really like. But I still like him as a character, though not at as a person. (I talk about him more in-depth in several places but here's an ask discussion where I actually go into detail on what I think of him: here, here, here.)

Kinda like what you talked about with the Zoldycks. People can't like these characters until the sanitise them into something they aren't. Gojou can't have cool fights and an awful personality. He needs to be cool and good in every way.

It's also a problem with people wanting to see similarities so badly. Like reaching desperately to compare characters and for what? Is like like that in those people's minds, if certain aspects of character design are similar, the totality of the characters needs to be similar too. The appearance can't be just a surface level nod, it has to mean something, blah blah. I don't get it personally. There's a shit ton of white haired manga characters but not all of them are similar. And surface level similarity means nothing when if you dive even a bit underneath the surface you see that their whole backstory, personality and arcs are different, that the themes surrounding them are different.

As to the Gojou and Sukuna fight, I've written in many places that I'd rather it had never happened. And I do have gripes with how Gojou was presented in the fight, etc. That being said Sukuna's win is very well justified and it had been very well set up. And for Sukuna fans, like me that fight is decent because it really fleshes Sukuna out a bit.

I really disagree with the "Gege hates Gojou" fandom belief. I find it completely baseless. Gege is very self deprecating in how they speak about themself and their characters. There aren't many characters that Gege speaks about in some super positive way. They usually play down all their characters. But they also flesh a lot of them out a lot and that's how writers show love to their characters. The characters you can say a writer dislikes are those which get little to no consideration. And Gojou gets a lot of consideration. He gets several fights where he gets to do cool stuff, people even call him Goatjou and like it's not because the author neglects him, quite the opposite actually. He is very well fleshed out, he's just an irresponsible, selfish asshole with a god complex. Creating a character to be an asshole is not hating that character, it's just creating a certain type of character because they are needed in the story. Gojou's ideals from the start have been shaky, his plan to change the jujutsu society is shit from the start. He treats everyone around him like trash and then whines about feeling lonely. Nothing about what happens with his death hasn't been set up.

Sukuna vs Gojou could never have been like Meruem and Netero because there was no clash of ideals between them. No emotional investment on either side. Just vanity and arrogance, and practicality. Sukuna vs Gojou actually is a little like Hisoka vs Chrollo in that respect. Because Hisoka went into that fight arrogant and vain, though for him it's more set up because that his whole life mission to fight and kill strong opponents. And Chrollo, like Sukuna took that fight because he had to, otherwise Hisoka wouldn't have fucked off. And well after death he still hasn't. And like Sukuna, Chrollo devised a plan and prepared exactly for the opponent he was facing. He fought smart, just like Sukuna. They aren't exactly the same. Sukuna doesn't really feel like he's streaching the limitations of the power system and Chrollo kinda does to me. Also I personally can't stand Chrollo as a person, I'm with Killua on this one, he's fake deep. But yeah, if this fight must be compared to something in HxH, the Hisoka vs Chrollo can be that.

If people want to compare someone to Killua then here, I will throw them a bone. I present to you Gabimaru the Hollow or as I like to call him Killuamaru. He's the protag of JigokuRaku (Hell's Paradise) and omg this ace assassin who was tortured into what he is and has sever programming to overcome and just wants a normal life feels quite often like Killua being on loan in a different manga because Togashi isn't using him rn. Hell's Paradise is a neat but rather gory and creepy shounen, with a lot of canonical queerness. And a lot of flowers.

Tumblr only just showed me that @ksjundel2003 tagged me with this just now, as technology does. I'll always take the chance to ramble (also thank u for the compliment ahhh :D). These ended up being essays hahahaaaha

1. Three Ships: Uhhh so I'm in a weird place where I'm not actively shipping anything. Like don't get me wrong I still love many ships (I'm a super multi shipper, I have no idea how people dedicate their online everything to one ship) I'm just currently not actively pursuing certain ship tags rn... Hmm hxh's return reminded me of how much I love Leopika, I got into fe3h in this last year and I've read a silly amount of dimiclaude. Also finally got around to getting into mp100 and Terumob is so cute.

Genshin thats what people are here for but if I'm honest while I still am very into the game, I haven't read genshin fic consistently for a while and thats how I interact with shipping the most. Like I love Chili, theres a reason I have plans for that ship, but I haven't read a fic with them in forever (and in the more recent examples it was me searching for found fam harb content). I also adore Kaebedo but same story. I love a lot of genshin ships, many 'contradictory' (love Zhongven as well for example), I just haven't been brainrotting about any of them for a while. God that sounds so morose pfft, its really me just letting my brain take a break and experience other things! Also just know I do think about the final planned Zhongli and Childe scene in this fic (well for the main fic at least) every once in a while and grin like a loon. Hehehe I love it so much and rip its so far away (though also once I get there it'll be right near the end and that thought makes me sad).

Also I think about my fic specific ships a lot too. Sandy and Nella for example have a scene that brings me much amusement in a couple chapters (those 2 always bring me joy). Also I've been recently thinking about the ot3 that's a big old spoiler. There's this angsty but also hopeful romantic scene that's been banging around in my head that I literally can't use in my fic it doesn't work with the timeline. But I love it, maybe an eventual bonus chap. (all I'll say on this ot3 is that at least 1 person is a harb). And taras x any harb that isn't his bro, my favorite running gag I take too seriously. Also Madame Volkov x Tsar, I can't wait to reveal why that ship cracks me up (also weirdly angsty).

2. First ever ship: God I don't know. Probably amuto from Shugo Chara (I was elementary/middle school, the age gap did not clock as weird then). However my first ship with taste was Soulsilvershipping from pokemon (god we need to bring back that ship name format, so fun). I didn't have fictional crushes the same way most seemed to, however what was close enough was Silver Pokemon my beloved. He spawned my love of grumpy long haired red heads so when I saw Diluc for the first time I remember going fuck I'm gonna love him (and I did haha).

3. Last song: uhhh fun fact I'm not a music person at all. As a child I hated it pfft, while I grew out of that I still have no idea what I'm doing with it. 90% of the music I listen to is from animatics (and back in the day from amvs) or musicals because plot. And u know u find a lot of musicals because of animatics its a cycle. However saying that I was listening to Ricky Montgomery, idk why.

4. Last movie: my parents were like we're watching a movie as a fam and in true Christmas spirit we watched Top Gun Maverick pfft. tbh the movie was fine but not the stunning piece of cinema everyone seemed to be saying... also super military propaganda but we all knew that

5. Currently reading? I'm catching up on the Ascendance of a Bookworm Light Novels (I'm on the last book in part 4 and I have part 5 #1 ready). I've also been really slowly reading through (and got back into after almost a year accidental break) Lout of the Counts Family. Also hunter x hunter (my brain is filled with Sheila theories, despite being the Harbinger found fam fic writer I don't care about the troop lol, just Sheila). I also have some DC comics open in my tabs because I want to watch the newest comicpop back issues episode. Its sort of strange I've been on a reading fan fic break of sorts haha, reading lots of original stuff.

6. Currently watching? uhhhh Mob Psycho though that just ended. Also me and my sis are watching Miraculous together. We used to watch it years ago and we are watching all the stuff we missed and cringing. I also am constantly watching lots of video essays, love a good video essay to put on while doing other things like playing genshin/art/etc

7. Currently consuming? We have a holiday party every year and my dad makes his amazing to die for lasagna (we are not remotely italian, but everyone we know says its amazing). So I've been eating those leftovers and having a time.

8. Currently craving? validation uhhh free time maybe. I had so much free time while I was away at school (well more like I should have been working on stuff time, but it was time I could organize myself). I'm home and between Christmas and parties and my grandparents/Cousins/feels like everyone visiting I've had no time for myself. I love seeing my cute baby cousins I don't get to see too often but its a lot. Also a job, I don't want to have to job but it'll get my mother off my case.

Well that ended on a too serious note haha. Also this was way too long and I have no idea who to tag and I'm anxious so uh, no one I guess. I must now return to my chaotic life, as one does.

Zigg Zoldyck headcanons

Character(s): Zigg Zoldyck, Isaac Netero, Linnet Hors-d’œuvre

spoilers alert: Zigg Zoldyck’s official appearance was on chapter 344. For anyone who isn’t caught up to the hxh’s manga, do not read any further for fear of catching spoilers.

Side note: Keep in mind that these are MY headcanons. If you do not approve or have your own headcanons for him, then keep these to yourself.

Was a huge mischievous boy in his childhood.  

Used to love scaring the shit out of the maids and butlers that were passing by.

Would steal at least three sugar bags a day from the chef’s kitchen.

Zigg is that one kid who used to only eat sugar packs and run around with them all over the mansion while his father sat quietly to the side watching his chaotic son ruin the hallways.

His dad just had to deal with his shit on a constant basis.

Zigg would usually lay on top of one of the Testing gate dragons while waiting for his father to come home after work.

Is the most unhinged but mysterious zoldyck heir above them all.

Has seen too much for his own good. Doesn’t complain about it. The guy is not even fazed by that.

A horrible driver. Don’t let this man touch any type of transportation.

This guy constantly looks hyper and is proud of it.

No matter what he feels, he’ll always have that mysterious smile plastered on his face.

His butlers secretly believe he might have just made a stupid grin too many times and it eventually permanently stayed on his face.

Although his wide smile is rather uncanny, this is due to coincidence and is only how his facial structure is shaped.

But what comes as an advantage to have his smiling face is that it would usually be very hard to know if he’d be lying or not.

Not only is he already a great liar with or without his constant smile like mouth, but his body language is also incomprehensible to read given his face.

Zigg has had many names over the years.

He was commonly known in the assassination industry as “The Smiling Devil”, “The Devil’s messenger” and even “The Devil’s horns”.

These names were given to him due to his unhinged expression.

Whether he was smiling intentionally or not, it didn’t change the fact that people couldn’t help but feel tense whenever he was around.

You can imagine how his targets must feel.

It would be laughable and even bold to claim that the cheshire silver-haired heir might have a personal weakness.

His sheer power and strength alone easily overpower any assassin and fighter combined.

His best friends, as well as traveling companions, would have to be Netero and Linnet.

Zigg doesn’t care what he labels them, he just likes tagging along with them to see what kind of stupid shit the three of them will do.

This trio has been through hell and back.

They even have been to places where no man has ever laid foot. 

From the way that he talks, eats, decorates, wears clothes, or when talking about his likes and dislikes, Zigg would never respond or do these things the right way it was supposed to be. 

He’d eat while adding too much sugar or salt to the dish, or he would gobble it all up without chewing it.

He also has this habit of only choosing dark minted chocolates as a sugary snack, loving the smell of sour milk, spreading cold butter on cold bread, and brushing his teeth right after drinking any kind of juice.

Whenever he talks, he always has to expressively show what he’s talking about by using his hands and arms to portray the scene.

This wouldn’t be abnormal to do if it wasn’t for the fact that he constantly does it for the smallest things.

When it comes to giving him the task to be creative, his decorating skills can be quite… unique.

Let’s just say he can turn any house or room into Alice in Wonderland if left unsupervised.

Has a weird thing for cute things.

His clothing style is at least less odd than anything else he does.

He’s always seen wearing his sleeveless shinobi shōzoku outfit which is usually the attire worn by the zoldyck heir.

Whenever he wasn’t seen wearing it, he would put on a sleeveless shirt with a pair of long shorts or pants.

As for any special events that involve ballrooms or fancy restaurants, he’s surprisingly all prepared and ready to be seen in suits.

His preferences are far from being considered ‘crazy’.

In fact, they are chaotic more than anything else.

His likes range from having an appreciation for asymmetrical circles with coffee rings, being strangely proud of having tangled wires, taking off drawers and cupboards to use them as wall forts, attempting to leave the house when it’s icy, always leaving the front door and windows open, reading with gloves on, messing up a bubble wrap, only using cold water when showering, and finally, eating the last pizza from the box while Netero and Linnet argue on who should take it (this one seems to happen a lot if it’s considered to be a part of his list).

His likes could also be considered his habits.

He also has a deep admiration and fascination for games with mysterious world-building and weird lore such as Majora’s Mask, Sally face, Fran Bow, Omori, Silent Hill 2, and Bloodborne.

His dislikes on the other hand are far more unexplainable than his likes.

He dislikes tea, swimming in a pool, or simply seeing a pool, pizza, riding a bike, sunbathing, glasses, daydreaming, clippers, soft mattresses, and cardboard boxes.

He frequently breaks imaginary fourth walls.

Is physically capable of doing a full 360 turn with his head.

No one, including Netero and Linnet, knows for sure what the fuck is wrong with him.

But what they both secretly found exceptionally beautiful about him was his constant blabbering and admiration for anything uncommon.

He never ignores anything that seems to be abnormal.

On the contrary, he welcomes the unusual.

Of all the zoldyck heirs to have existed, Zigg Zoldyck is known as “the one who saw too much”.

After accepting Netero’s invite to join him and Linnet on an expedition, which would later be revealed to be an unrecorded journey, it turned out that the three of them became anonymously known as the only survivors who came back alive from the Dark Continent.

Their physical conditions seem to be stable and in good condition enough, however, their mental sanity in comparison has long been gone.

This exceptional trio unfortunately received some aftereffects from their dark travel.

After having gone through this horrific experience, each of them had been subjected to different side effects.

Linnet Hors-d’oeuvre had the misfortune to become speechless. 

Due to what she has seen and witnessed, the many horrors and unspeakable calamities left her in a voiceless state incapable of telling her misadventures about this cursed continent.

Zigg, on the other hand, became more deranged and twisted than ever before.

The only one who had at least some kind of morality left in them was Netero. But even putting it in that way would be considered too simple to conclude for him.

Unlike Linnet and Netero however, Zigg managed to limit his odd tendencies when he’s around people.

This would explain his sudden new strange manners.

These habits help him cope with what he’s dealing with.

Still, he doesn’t see any problem with the fact that he received some side effects from the unknown world.

Unbeknownst to him, however, he brought a calamity by the name of Ai with him.

At first, he thought that the voice in his head must've been made up by his imagination.

But when he eventually realized that this wasn’t the case at all, it finally dawned on him that the thing glued to him wasn’t natural.

No one believed him when he explained the situation he was dealing with: he was the only one who could hear it after all.

This did not only make him sound more absurd than usual, but it also made him look a bit off-putting to his butlers and relatives.

The constant remarks about his odd new behavior did not bother him. He enjoyed the fact that he possessed something horrendous even if it had the ability to kill him.

Despite the fact that he tried numerous times to communicate with the calamity residing in him, it was only able to pronounce certain words to him.

The poor communication between him and it, was considered progress to Zigg. He just knows that someday, Ai will gain some kind of consciousness as time will take its course.

He never once gave up on their small but poor attempts at conversations. He was too engulfed in studying it that he sometimes forgets his own duties as heir.

He’ll stay in his room for many hours of the day; almost full days just to talk to it.

On the other side of his chamber, however, his butlers and relatives could only hear him talking to himself.

He kept forgetting so much of his own work that he began having a butler specifically suited to organize his schedule for every day of the week.

Each day passing by was only another chance for him to attempt making progress with the thing that was taking every space in his mind.

Zigg’s fate as well as his existence has been turned into another secret hidden away by the zoldycks.

His belongings have been locked away in the deepest parts of Kukuroo Mountain.

If even one singular individual would've tried to know about who he once was,  no one would’ve been able to take the truth.

Thoughts on ChainsawMan?

People tend to compare that to Jujutsu Kaisen.

I actually wrote down my thoughts about CSM, after I read it. And they stand because after the hard reset of the story and of Denji with the end of part 1 (is that what's it's called in the fandom? idk) I just went "really?" and stopped reading.

So I won't repeat what I said there I will just write a bit about what I think about people comparing CSM and JJK. And about how I don't really find them very similar at all.

I think the comparing started with Fujimoto himself? Idk if people compared them before he said it. And generally I wish he hadn't said that and that people didn't compare the two. There's a lot of this attitude "I like this thing more so it must be better in every way and the other thing needs to be shit, and I'm intellectually superior for liking it" coming form the CSM fandom. Idk if JJK fans are also such dipshits, but it took me a lot of blocking not to see posts from CSM fans who showed love for their fav by coming into the juju tags and shitting on it while saying nothing about why they think CSM is good. It reeks of high school mentality that many fail to shake until their 30s or even later.

The problem with comparing these two is that any similarities are extremely superficial. Fujimoto and Gege have completely different attitudes towards their characters, storytelling, world building, themes. They are clearly trying to achieve very different things with their stories and that's okay.

As I say in that post I linked above, I don't think CSM is bad but there's just nothing in it that matches my subjective tastes. JJK isn't perfect but the great things about it really hit the sweet spots for me.

(highlighting this so hopefully the CSM fans leave me the fuck alone)

CSM and JJK spoilers ahead, if you're an anime only. Also my opinion of CSM is based on part 1 and like a few chapters of part 2 that I read before I completely lost interest in it. I don't see myself picking it again, though.

Characters:

Fujimoto's gag character is Denji. Gege's are Toudou and Takaba. It is a valid writing choice to make your main character into a joke but not one I like. So like the moment I realised Denji's budding sexuality is a joke not a theme CSM really lost in my eyes. And since Fujimoto had (has?) just one joke for Denji to be the butt of over and over again it just got boring.

After the first two chapters I was ready to love Denji, to adopt him. Like 25 chapters in I was completely cold on him because it became clear that Fujimoto isn't going to do anything with him. If you compare that to Yuuji who's consistently getting juicy character development - it's easy for me to care about him, and when he gets traumatised, I get traumatised with him and now we have this bond where I mentally adopted him.

Aki is less meh then Megumi but in the end he's there just to die meaninglessly because Denji gets reset. I prefer Nobara to Power but I still think Power is okay, but in the end she's there just to die meaninglessly because Denji gets reset.

Makima barely wins at being more interesting with Sukuna. And that's mostly because Gege is very against developing Sukuna. Compared with Kenjaku or even Mahito? She's so dull, her plot is simplistic, and her manipulation is kinda one note.

Storytelling:

My blog's name references HxH. Part of why I obsess over HxH is the idea of characters having very different and separate goals. Story lines that run concurrently and kinda bump into each other, feed into each other and then separate. I hate the contemporary hot take that everything in writing has to be meat, has to further the plot.

CSM part 1 is very focused around the Control Devil's ploy to control the Chainsaw Devil using the Gun Devil as a ruse and other factions trying to interfere with that. There's really only this one plot line going on, there are some character arcs on the side, there are some factions nuances but they really just all prop up the main one.

JJK isn't HxH in this respect but the way in which characters have their own goals that don't necessarily further the plot is still really well done. And there isn't even one main plot. Kenjaku is the driver of it all and they have their huge scheme but Sukuna has his own plans, Gojou had his own power play with the elders and was trying to put that in motion. Other characters have/had their own schemes or goals too. People love to complain that the Zenin arc has nothing to do with the plot. I guess. It has everything to do with the themes though. I'm so sad that when Gege decided to speed run juju they cut Nobara, because her story had all the hallmarks of being about the themes but also her powers would really lend themselves to the main villain fights.

Shock Value vs Anticlimax:

HxH uses anticlimax very efficiently making the story feel fresher and much more interesting than for instance stories that rely on plot twists and reveals. The way most HxH arcs end is unexpected and kinda anticlimactic but extremely satisfying. There's build up and it gets resolved in a very fun way but not the most obvious one.

I don't remember CSM using anticlimax at all, but I have read it once and only part 1 and didn't watch the anime. So maybe it does but not in a way that was memorable to me. But it uses shock value and twists and reveals a lot, and mostly relies on killing off characters. Which for me resulted in not even trying to remember their names or faces and sometimes skipping through their dialogue if the exchanges got boring.

Gege isn't Togashi but the HxH and YYH influences are visible. Gege can suddenly kill off a character and doesn't stray away from graphic violence and body horror for shock. But the killing off isn't constant. It makes sense to get invested in the characters. Anyone can die but it's not a given, it's a threat not a promise. And the anticlimactic moments are meaningful and satisfying - sometimes in a cruel way. Yuuji's breakdown in the detention centre; then his death soon after; Junpei's death; the end of the exchange event; the whole fucking Shibuya arc which gives the reader no catharsis just drags them deeper into despair with every little moment that doesn't result in a clear win - it's excruciating; the conversation between Yuuji and Higuruma.

There's shock value in JJK too, as is in HxH. It's just used more like spice, it's not all there is to the flavour.

World building:

I just like complex magic systems where the results of the fights are not a given and fights can go interesting ways with how the characters utilise their powers in creative ways. In CSM it's just Chainsaw Devil hack and slash, Chainsaw Devil win, Denji is anemic - and for me that's very whatever.

Themes:

I've read some meta and saw some video essays about CSM and some people actually talked about the themes. I don't really remember much of it... I think it was mostly about the found family thing and life being kinda hopeless so carving these little moments for oneself? There might be more I just never was invested enough and the stuff i read/heard didn't fully convince me. Like I felt, yeah there might be some of it but it all felt like kinda gliding on the surface.

The themes in JJK match my interests far better. Oppressive systems and how hard they are to overcome even if you try. Bodily autonomy. Anti traditionalism and anti patriarchy. Deconstruction of the narrative of the hyper individualism of "the strongest" ideology and the idea of meritocracy. Reconciling guilt and your own values.
