*SIGH* Finances in the shinobi world... I have thought about this way too often. It should've been a way bigger part of Naruto's worldbuilding, considering the many money driven motvations we see in the story, but it sadly isn't. For the sake of this post I will convert everything into USD, but feel free to convert that into any currency of your choosing. This will be a mixture of canon and headcanon, you've been warned.

Money in the shinobi world

Let's see what the wiki has to say about money in the shinobi world first.

The ryō (両) is the currency used in the Naruto world. It is based on an old Japanese gold coin that was used in Japan before the Meiji period. It was later replaced by the yen. The exchange rate of 1 ryō is 10 yen. Although money isn't focused on much in the story, certain prices and sums of money have been mentioned. For example, Asuma Sarutobi had a bounty of 35,000,000 ryō (...) The Mujina Bandits made a demand to the Ikkyū Madoka, the daimyō of the Land of Fire, of a ransom of 500,000,000 ryō for the safe return of his son, Tentō Madoka, which Ikkyū had to make preparations to gather.

35,000,000 ryō are about $430,000 while 500,000,000 ryō are about $6.24 million.

Shinobi usually earn their money from completing missions. The rewards for these range from 5,000 ryō for a D-rank mission to more than 1,000,000 ryō for an S-rank mission.

5,000 ryō is about $60, while 1,000,000 ryō equate to about $12,400.

Currency

There are three types of currency in the shinobi world, one being copper coins, the other actual money bills and the last one being gold ingots. Copper coins are the most commonly spent currency, while ingots are the rarest. Bills start from 100 ryō ($1.25) and go up to 10,000 ryō ($125), while there are ingots from 10,000 to 1,000,000 ryō ($12,500).

Pricing

In Naruto Part 1, we see Naruto and Jiraya bump into a man who says his designer jacket is worth 10,000 ryō ($1250), to which Jiraya (who is loaded btw) says that designer jackets of that quality aren't usually "that" expensive. Aside from revealing designer brands exist in the shinobi world, it also implies that the pricing in Naruto isn't comparable to our world, since 1000 dollars for a designer jacket isn't outrageously expensive.

While hubs of economy, the ninja villages are mainly used to produce ninjas and economic growth is not their first priority. Most money is made (and exchanged) in the capital cities of the continent, which is where most of the rich and wealthy live.

I do think there is some basic universal healthcare in the hidden leaf village, however, long term/large scale treatments often have to be paid out of pocket. (ex. Mukai Kohinata, Shisui Uchiha)

Salaries

Given the large majority of missions go along the hokage village and a part of the money is taken by the village and the large position of power that the hokage position provides, it's reasonable to assume the hokage earns quite a lot. My estimate is about 100M ryō, which equates to $1.25M.

The average genin, assumed they do 4 D-Rank missions a week and pays an income tax of 20%, makes about $10,300 anually, most of which will be spent on ninja weapons and training equipment.

Aside from official missions, there are also ways to 'illegally' hire ninja, especially when talking about rogue ninja outside of the village. They are directly payed without paying taxes to their village. Aside from state sponsored killing, there are other missions to do, like transporting intel or other goods, which Sasuke most likely could've done during his time in exile, considering he traveled so much. People with ninja skills are a rarity outside of the ninja villages, so hiring a nukenin to do a job for you is a viable option, at least for more wealthy civilians.

When talking about Sasuke in Orochimaru's hideout, I think he gets an allowance from Oro as well as making money doing "illegal" missions. I think Orochimaru comes from a wealthy family and he makes a lot of money from his lab work and experiments. You can hire him/his men for intel gathering and experiments, as well as medical services if you're a nukenin. Out of the sannin, Oro is probably the richest of the three of them.

“Stop! I’ll go with you! Okay? I’ll go with you, Itachi. Just, please, don’t hurt the little ones.”

The man who eradicated his entire clan, sparing only his little brother, how could you think he wouldn’t live up to the threat of murdering yours if you didn’t go with him?

“You foolish girl,” he had chuckled.

Now, here you are, lowered to the ground with your head hung as you shield your younger siblings and cousins. Your tears drip from your puffy eyes, splashing against the ground. You might not have been able to save your parents, aunts, and uncles, but you can save what’s left of your clan.

Completely at his mercy, you wait for him to make the next move.

“You look the best when you’re on your knees, begging at my feet.”

Though you want to glare at him, you know better. You keep your head bowed, not out of respect, out of fear for what he might do if he sees your defiance.

“Please, I’ll go with you. I promise, I won’t fight. Spare the young ones. I’ll be yours forever, Itachi. If you spare them, I’ll be so thankful.” You can’t help the timid notes which causes your voice to shake. Still, you remain firm in your stance to protect the children.

Itachi places two fingers under your wet chin. He raises your eyes to look into his Sharingan.

“Only out of my love for you will I spare them, but know now that if you ever try to run or defy me, they will suffer as a consequence. Is that understood?”

Your tears seem endless as they continuously roll down your cheeks. “I understand. Can I say goodbye to them?”

He’s gracious enough to grant you your request, and you give each sibling and younger cousin a hug and farewell.

Itachi has to pull you away from your five year old sister, telling you, “That’s enough.”

You want nothing more than to cling to her, but you let her go for her own safety.

Your youngest sibling cries out for you, and it pulls at your heart that you can’t console them. It tears you apart that a child has to raise the younger ones. It kills you that their life hangs in the balance because of you.

If only you had gone with him in the beginning…

“I know what you’re thinking,” he states as he washes you away from your thoughts.

You look up at the raven haired man with an air of sorrow.

“You’re thinking about how all of this could have been avoided. That’s not what matters anymore. What matters now is that you know your place. From now on, you’re meant to be at my side. You’ll never be far from me, and if you rebel, then you know what will happen.”

“Yes, Itachi.”

As you look behind you for the last time, you kiss the grounds that once was your home goodbye. You will never be able to see what’s left of your family ever again, but it has to be enough because you know they’ll be safe this way. Your life is with Itachi now.

Unfortunately for you, nothing will ever change that.

Fun Fact:

Did you know that apparently all the Hokage 火 have personal relations to each other and knew eachother other and 5/7 (71%) of them are related to each other being they are family as seen in the image above. But they all knew each other in some way or matter. So apparently Kakashi and Hiruzen are the only two that aren’t family members to the other Hokage.

Yin-Yang Trope:

Sumire has Gozu Tenno mark on her left hand (Lunar side) while Boruto has her Karma mark on her right hand(Solar side).

Mitsuki's eyes are the color of Eye of Horus(Lunar eye) while Sarada's are the color of Eye of Ra (Solar Eyes).

Mitsuki and Sumire are Yin-Type characters while Boruto and Sarada are Yang-Type.

I can go on talking about the trope,But i can tell that it's more likely for MitsuSara and BoruSumi to become Endgame especially after Sarada said Boruto is like her brother and the fact that Sumire was brave enough to confess her love for Boruto while Mitsuki has never shown to be intimate with any girl except for Sarada,and both of them are quite almost always seen with each other and in Sasuke shinden they even had a Tarzan and Jane moment when a romantic song was being played.

I'm familiar with Kishimoto's tropes,and the way Boruto treats Sumire/Mitsuki treats Sarada makes it more believable knowing what happened in OG Naruto. Like how many times we were teased with those SasuSaku panels? NaruHina scenes in anime? Yeah,you might get what i mean.

Konohagakure Worldbuilding Headcanon

People

Generally speaking, people from Konoha are seen as polite and even outgoing, but sometimes a little obnoxious when it comes to their rampant patriotism. As the first shinobi village of its kind, there is only so much propaganda a Konoha shinobi can handle before turning a little cocky. Konoha citizens love gossip and are often looking for the newest gossip to furthen their sense of unity. They are a rather collectivist society with everyone having to do their part, and the public court of opinion is often times brutal, men especially are often expected to just 'suck it up' and 'act like a man'.

Politics

The hokage is seen as the highest authority figure in the village, unlike in some villages the general population's trust in the village leader is high. The hokage's decisions aren't really allowed to be questioned, and unlike Kiri citizens who do it behind closed doors, Konoha citizens don't even dare to do that. Konoha has a mixed economy with quite a lot of the shinobi income going directly to the village. There is some basic healthcare, but only covers the bare necessities, and better, high quality treatments have to be paid out of pocket. The laguage spoken in Konoha and the fire country (Japanese) is the most spoken language and taught in the other villages as the standard foreign language. It is also the reason why the Kage offices in the different villages have the kanji for the different elements in front of them - to make it easier to find for foreigners. As a second foreign language, people often choose the Kumo language.

Flora

Konoha -and the fire country in general- typically have very bright, warm weather. In the south, there are agonizingly hot summers - snowy winters being a rarity. Konoha is surrounded by dense, lush mixed forest land which serves as a habitat for a wide range of plants and herbs - some of them even having medicinal uses. Although mushrooms are commonly found in the Konoha forests, most of them are poisonous and should not be eaten.

Fauna

The forests are filled to the brim with many different animals, the most commonly found ones being wolves, eagles, deer, boar, pheasants and wild cats. Deer are often hunted and their meat is exported into different coutries as a delicacy. On the rarer side, tigers and bears can be found as well, but they typically stick to themselves. Ever since Konoha has been growing in population, some animals have been pushed out of their habitat and started to coexist with the citizens.

Food

Meat To secure dinner in Kiri, you can just go fishing. And to secure dinner in Konoha, you can just go hunting. Seriously. Meat, especially venison, is the preferred protein source of Konoha shinobi. However, if you ask a Konoha shinobi what they think of Sungakure and their habit of turning any meat they find into jerky, they would be horrified. Grilling meat is the most preferred method of preparing meat, closely followed by frying it.

Ramen Due to cultural influences from Uzushiogakure, ramen, including instant ramen, have grown in popularity over the decades. Next to rice, wheat is the preferred source of carbs here. Funnily enough, most Konoha shinobi prefer whole grain over white flour. To each their own, I guess.

Baked goods and confectionary

Konoha has quite a few café's and bakeries that offer many little desserts. But I have to warn you: "Buttercream" in Konoha often just means whipped cream - very different compared to the thick and buttery goodness Kumo shinobi are used to. The most popular baked good in Konoha is the Baumkuchen, frequently enjoyed by sweet tooths such as Itachi Uchiha, Hinata Hyuga and Ibiki Morino.

His usually calm disposition turns into outrage, and you are in fear of your life. The silver haired ninja stalks towards you like a panther, making you cower in the corner.

“What’s wrong, Kakashi?” You ask nervously.

“Oh, I don’t know. Why don’t you tell me what’s wrong, Y/N.” He grabs you, forcing you on your feet, pulling you in close. “Did you attempt to remove the tags in your room?”

You know he’s referring to the tags that keep you within the barrier of your room. When you found that you could leave, you thought Kakashi was just being nice and letting you roam the house for the day.

“What?” You have no idea what he’s talking about. “No, all I did today was move a bookshelf and read. I-”

You never got the chance to finish that sentence as he cut you off with a sharp slap to the face. If he didn’t have a tight hold on your arm, you would have fallen to the ground.

“Ah! Kakashi, what the hell?!”

“If you think I’m going to put up with your insolence for one more second, think again. I could lock you in a cage. I could break your legs at any moment. Is that what I have to do to keep you from running off? Is that what you want me to do?”

“No! I wasn’t trying to run!”

“Lies!” He picks you up and throws you on the couch, tearing at your clothes. “Just tell me the truth.” He finishes ripping the last of the fabric off of your body. “Don’t force me to do something we both don’t want.”

Your lip quivers. “I didn’t do anything. I was just moving the bookshelf. I’m telling you the truth. Please, you have to believe me. I would never try to leave you. I love you.”

He sends a light jolt of Chidori through your body. You cry and convulse at the sudden shock waves ripping through your muscles.

“Tell me the truth. Be honest and this can end.”

You shake your head, denying any escape attempts. He doesn’t listen, and he repeats the cycle, every shock wave growing worse.

He doesn’t stop until you’re lying there with closed eyes. He makes sure you’re still breathing, and that’s enough to satisfy him. Picking you up, Kakashi takes you to your room. He opens the door and places you on the bed, pulling a blanket over you for comfort.

It’s only when he turns around that he notices your bookshelf is in a completely different area. It’s no longer across from your bed but next to your desk. Because you moved it, it caused one of the tags on your wall to fall off. He picks up the tag, eyes going wide with horror.

Kakashi looks at you with pity. “What have I done?”

It's almost 2024 and people still don't understand Itachi Uchiha and his motives really people people yes he did a horrible thing and you can blame it on Konoha not on Itachi if he didn't they would have killed everyone including Sasuke cause of Itachi loves his little brother more than anyone or anything in the world itself he made the ultimate sacrifice and Fugaku understood that it was a curse for the Uchihas to love and to have burned on those who they love the most -kind of like Cane and Able- and in Itachi's case it was Sasuke I mean if you have a sibling or did have one wouldn't you do anything in your power to protect them even if it means destroying everything in your path
