Lacey's Petshop Theory/Analysis (So Far)
So Lacey's Petshop dropped a couple of hours ago, and here's my thoughts so far after watching the video twice and doing some rough transcriptions.
Tumblr media
Illegible text transcriptions HERE.
Warnings for disturbing imagery, abuse, blood, and animal death. Also spoilers.
So here's my overall takeaway from this entry:
There are two stories going on. The story of Lacey, who represents Rocio Yani (Lacey Game's cofounder), and the story of how the games came to be. They're very heavily connected, but not everything we're shown in the Lacey games is exactly what happened to Rocio.
In Lacey's Petshop, Lacey's uncle kills her dog. After years of abuse from him and him killing this one bit of happiness she has in her life, she kills him. She hides his remains under the bed, and is afraid to leave the room after this.
Lacey seems to be a sort of stand-in for Rocio, who has clearly suffered similar abuse. There are two directions that Rocio's connection to the "bad versions" of the Lacey games could go: they were vent pieces to she could express her trauma, or she is literally connected to the games, living out a 2000s-esque life while her trauma seeps through in the bad endings.
Now, for further explanations.
I think it's pretty evident that Lacey's uncle killed her dog. With how she constantly mentions him "taking her angel away", and how the dog's face appears while a mutilated leg/bloody eye flash on screen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The motifs connecting the image of the dog to animal death and distress go even further:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I believe that Lacey killed her uncle after this mostly due to how images of a mangled/rotting foot and a bloody eye when she is talking about how "he is still under the bed" and that she "can't leave"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The lines about her not being able to leave also could imply some sort of guilt. The mirror scene could also reinforce this, since she sees horribly distorted versions of herself.
I also don't think every game is a direct representation of her trauma, since the timeline get a little messy if they are. Especially Lacey's Wardrobe. That's the one that sticks out as different from Lacey's Diner and Lacey's Petshop, which both focus on the abuse from her uncle. Both Lacey's Diner and Petshop do both show that she killed him, with in Lacey's diner she is cooking him and her trauma into the food and serving it to others (a representation of what what is doing with the games, maybe?"
BONUS NOTE: After you click the... substance on the left, it shows this image, which features Rocio's name.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for what's happening in the real world. I'm actually going to go with the theory that Rocio is literally connected to the game as Lacey, and that's why there's bad endings that didn't used to be there. Everyone in the story remembers how they used to play Lacey games, and never seem to remember anything disturbing. But now that Rocio is connected to the game, her trauma is infecting it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think that her being connected to the wires is more literal than some may take it.
Forming a bit of a timeline, Laceygames.com / Yaniasogames started in 2004, and from the interview with Grace Asop confirms that they parted ways in 2010. This means that the "infections" were more recent, which is why no one has been discovering them until now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lacey / Rosio just wanted to have a normal life, so she connected herself to 2000s-esque flash games to make that a reality. But her past traumas ended up seeping into those games, creating the grotesque imagery that we now know.
I think that's all I have so far. Here are my favorite screencaps from this episode that I didn't get to use:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If anyone has any comments, ideas, or additions, please add them! This series has brought me back into the analog horror community, and it's really fun to discuss!

Okay but consider the following: Hunter becoming fandom-famous takes place in the same timeline as Movie.
People don’t really notice who this is at first. His account takes a bit to really get off the ground, and the overlap of people who could recognize the actors in Movie and cosmic frontier cosplayers is not that big but eventually, someone points it out in the comments of his latest pics with Willow. They’re mostly ignored beyond a few comments like hahaha weird or a plain lmao by someone, but the thought is out there now. It’s started.
Someone else notices too. Someone puts a screencap from Movie next to one of their group cosplay pics. More people notice the resemblance. It’s a small group, granted but they sure as hell do exist. Someone even dm’s keikos_husband like “Hey, look at what i found! [Image attached]”. They never get a conclusive response.
The scar thing is the one everyone keeps debating about because spaghetti guy doesn’t have them to the same extent that keikos_husband does. Until hunter posts that pic of his first cosplay. Which, if he’s really that age, matches up perfectly with the timeline of Movie.
Hunter just watches this whole thing like, gus, get over here it’s your fucked up movie again. He’d clarify, but Luz keeps insisting that he not and she thinks it’s really funny, so he doesn’t say anything.
Gus's Fucked Up Movie haunting the narrative more more persistently than Caleb Wittebane is extremely funny to me. Especially considering that these are two different semi-niche Internet corners.
YouTube essayists are like "After years of dormant activity, we've gotten a new lead in the Gus13 case in the form of a micocelebrity in a 90s sci fi book series fandom. Many have theorized that popular cosplayer/writer/prominent voice in the Cosmic Frontier community, Hunter Noceda, also known by his URL Keikos_husband, is the infamous "Spaghetti Guy" in the even more infamous "Movie" But does this theory hold any water? Let's dive in. But first, let's talk about today's sponsor, Hellofresh,"
Gus definitely cosplays a lot too and him and Hunter have done a few O'Bailey and Avery shoots. So Gus has a good chunk of Internet fame of his own. However he probably uses an alias so suspicion is initially nonexistent. Until somebody digs up an old reel Willow posted of their behind-the-scenes process (cleverly editing out the whole part with illusion magic). There's this one bit where the camera focuses on Hunter and Gus in an immature squabble as Willow's voiceover speaks to the viewer. It's hard to decipher and nobody has really cared until now. But now, with the new Gus13 buzz, that little moment has been studied under a microscope and people are now theorizing that Hunter says something along the lines of "Shut up, Gus,"
GUS??
The guy who does the insanely realistic special effects is named Gus???
Hmmmmmmmm.....
The conspiracy boards go crazy. Craft stores all over America are running low on yarn.
Luz keeps reblogging Gus13/Spaghetti Guy is Keikos_husband memes on tumblr and its driving people insane. Like is it a joke or not girl, is it a joke or not??
Willow makes it a million times worse when she posts a selfie of to her story, with Hunter eating dinner in the background, which she captions as "Made my man some spaghetti 🍝 💀"

Voiceplay Visuals: This Is Halloween
So obviously I'm not the only one who loves talking about Voiceplay and analysing their content, but I wanted to do something a bit different from the kinds of analyses/reactions that other people do, both on here and on Youtube (and music theory isn't really my forte anyway). So I'm planning on making some posts just focusing on the videos (and Geoff's as well, eventually), rather than the music arrangement or vocals or anything like that. My credentials are being a Drama Kid during my high school years, and experience with this sort of analysis from my time in other fandoms. I'm not planning on doing every single video, and though I'm gonna go chronologically from mid-2017 onwards (why not earlier? Because Reasons). However, since I yesterday finished a fanfic based on Voiceplay's cover of This Is Halloween, (which I studied a fair bit to get details right), I might as well start there!
Tumblr media
Oogie Boogie pumpkin just outside the front door! (And a Jack Skellington one on the other side I believe?) These pumpkin also shows up in the spooky Halloween realm the group are transported to after eating the candy.
Credit to one of the comments which said that Earl is wearing a cow onesie and Eli is wearing a rooster onesie, which more likely than not is a callback to their (extremely hilarious) Chicken Song performance. (J is wearing a CatDog onesie, I think Geoff is wearing a giraffe onesie? And I'm not sure what Layne's onesie is meant to be)
Again credit to a commenter (different one), pointing out that Eli deadpan elbows Layne in the back, pushing him down after he eats the candy (likely a not-so-subtle acting cue or something like that, but still very funny once you notice it)
Tumblr media
The return of the Jack and Oogie Boogie pumpkins, along with some other creatively-designed Jack-O-Lanterns! Peep the one on the far right, a little more towards the back; its 'eyes' say VP, and its mouth is the Voiceplay logo!
Also a little bit of foreshadowing, whether intentional or not: when Layne wakes up, one of the first things in his line of sight is the axe resting on the hay bales...
Tumblr media
First of all, how many pumpkins were carved just for this video? Because a lot of effort went into making all those different designs for sure (and no, I'm not part of Voiceplay's Patreon, as the tier that lets you see behind-the-scenes stuff is like $8.50 AUD per month, rip). And second of all, this is a decent shot of how the group starts out upon waking up. J None is wearing a yellow plaid flannel quite similar to The Wolfman in Nightmare Before Christmas, and Earl is wearing denim overalls, like the behemoth character. Eli's outfit is of course representative of the Mayor of Halloweentown, but no spider bowtie or "Mayor" rosette (would've loved to see it, but eh no biggie). Layne I will get to in a moment, and Geoff a little bit after that.
Tumblr media
I can't be bothered getting a better picture of it but Eli's half-concerned half-weirded-out face after J's helium-like vocal line is very amusing to me
On the "eyes glowing red" line, Earl's eyes (which are white at this point) flash red for a very brief moment, basically blink-and-you-miss-it.
Tumblr media
The colour-change on Eli's left eye is so subtle that at first I didn't notice it at all, and then I only noticed it later on in the video, and only now, doing this analysis and taking a dozen screencaps, do I realize that it happens way earlier than I first thought (which explains why he takes his glasses off at this point I guess) (so uh, that's a minor inconsistency in my fanfic but it's fine)
Tumblr media
Shoutout to the makeup/SFX people who helped with this video honestly, they did a super good job, genuinely!
Tumblr media
(In which the frame-by-frame scrubbing technique comes in real handy)
An interesting choice to have Layne go through a sort of "half-transformation" stage, where he has a horn and red eye on one side of the face, while the other side of the face is normal. I like it though!
People have said that Layne is meant to be the devil (who is in fact another Halloweentown resident, but honestly I think he's meant to be Lock, or at least a combination of the two, because this what the two characters look like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See how Layne resembles Lock more? In the outfit choice if nothing else (Also he's kinda sorta got the right face shape for Lock imo). Also, Lock wears a red trick-or-treating mask with horns on top!
Tumblr media
Earl is really distressed about his hair falling out (not that I can blame him, really)
Tumblr media
This shot/moment is probably one of the ones that stands out to me the most (other than Certain Other Ones for Other Reasons that I will get to in a moment), because J comes across as pretty mournful here, like he knows what's happening but he's feeling really sad/regretful about it? (Also I only just noticed Eli's face in the background and I'm not sure what to make of it 😅)
Tumblr media
"pog" is not a word in my vocabulary 95% of the time, but this is basically just Pog faces right? (Geoff and Layne probably have the most fun of the group in this video ngl)
(Also I haven't yet touched on Geoff's transformations but I love the contouring work on his face!)
Tumblr media
My god this video is comedy gold when it comes to pausing/taking screenshots
Tumblr media
I daresay Eli ends up one of the least recognizable of the group by the end of it (other than J), and I wanna know how long that took to do
Tumblr media
Geoff is the only one in the video who gets an outfit upgrade (Good For Him)
They didn't bother being movie-accurate with Geoff's vampire appearance, and honestly I'm definitely not complaining. (they made him hotter)
Layne did the music arrangement, but Geoff was in charge of the video production. How much say did he have over his own costume/appearance I wonder?
Tumblr media
Visually speaking at least, nobody is even paying attention to him, they're just like "yeah that's just Geoff, normal behaviour, nothing new" 😆
I can't get a decent picture of it but shoutout to Layne doing a silly little run around the pumpkin stack, love that for him
Another small moment that a screencap wouldn't do justice: even as a vampire, Geoff still does his little self-conducting hand motions, which you might notice as he walks around the pumpkin stack, in the shot right after his "filling your dreams to the brim with fright" line
Tumblr media
Also love Geoff's little almost-Elvis-like moves in the background for a brief scene. I know multiple commenters have mentioned it, but I'm yet to see a reactor notice it
Tumblr media
Suddenly Layne is Concerned(tm) about Geoff's vampireness it seems?
Tumblr media
Also for someone who very much adores this guy, it took me an embarassingly long time to realise that Geoff's face at this point had become paler and his hairline had changed (and actually now that I type it up here, I think that might even be a wig? Oh dear)
Tumblr media
I don't really have anything to say about J's full transformation, but it would be unfair of me to not include him as well, and it's definitely a *very* impressive costume. Almost like one of those rubbery fully-covering-the-head costume mask things, but like it's his actual face?
Tumblr media
Is that tattoo real or fake, because I literally have never noticed it in any other Voiceplay video, but it's very realistic! (For that matter, what aobut Earl's upper-arm tattoo that kind of looks like a ring of barbed wire?)
Tumblr media
I basically watch the This Is Halloween opening scene from The Nightmare Before Christmas every October, and same with the What's This scene in December, but I had never actually watched the movie in full until December last year. So basically when they had the axe-in-the-head moment in the movie I was like ohhhhhhh so that wasn't just a random moment that Voiceplay dreamed up for the video! (I had a similar moment with the Mr Hyde character and his Mini Mr Hydes in his hat in the movie, but in relation to Voiceplay's Kidnap The Sandy Claws video)
Tumblr media
When Elizabeth Zharoff/The Charismatic Voice reacted to this video, she said that the kid at the end (Layne's nephew, apparently), was "adorable". Meanwhile Mortius' reaction to the end scene was "oh I didn't like that! It makes me feel like I'm next!" 😂
Also suddenly just realized that the "real world" scenes are in a different aspect ratio to the "spooky dream realm" scenes? Possibly intentional, but also possibly just due to them using two different types of cameras for the shots.
And that's a wrap! I was hoping to get this done and posted last night but it took longer than expected. Hope you enjoyed it, as I'm thinking of writing up at least one or two more now, and scheduling them for daily releases. See ya!

Round two: ready to go!
Here’s the card we’ll be using for this month’s edition of our bingo! Grab it up and get going. Remember, zero need to sign up, but if you want to share it with us so we can reblog and share the love, make sure you do so by next Wednesday, December 7.
Below the cut: a list of definitions for each of the squares in case you need help or ideas (don’t worry, those will be added to the FAQs post for easy reference), and a black & white version of the card, in case you want to get creative with it.
☆ How do I fill my card? How is each square defined?
Here’s the way we’re defining the activities associated with each card. If any of this is confusing after you read it over, send us a message and we’ll help!
- ‘leave kudos on a fic’
This is the easiest one! Just go out and find a fic you like and leave a kudos on it, if you haven’t already. It’s a small gesture but it makes an author know that someone actually read their story!
- ‘reblog/retweet an art post’
Find any art post you like and share it! Here’s the catch: you need to interact with it a little. When you reblog/retweet, please tell the creator what you thought about the piece – you can add some tags, or reply to the post, or quote-retweet or add a comment, or anything! A simple “I love this!” is nice but some details are even better (“your linework is so good!” or “that shade of blue is perfect”). One thing to think about: a lot of art on Tumblr is reposted (like when a user posts another artist’s work from Pixiv, say), so it’s nice if you make an effort to interact with posts that are actually from the creator if you can. That way the artist will see your comment!
- ‘reblog/retweet a fic post’
Same as the above, but for fic! Again, tags/replies/comments are needed, preferably with a little detail. You don’t need to be super eloquent or leave a detailed review (although if you have time/energy, that would be appreciated!); a tag as simple as “that was really cute” or “great characterization!” will do. Like with the art posts, it’s nice if you reblog directly from the writer (if you can) – some fics are posted by AO3 feed bots and the like, so the author may not even know a reblog has happened.
- ‘reblog/retweet an edit’
Same as the above, but for edits! Edits can include a gif set, or a set of screencaps, or even a fanvid. And, again, some simple tags/replies are needed. “I love that song choice!” for a vid or “great coloring!” on a gifset can let people know their work is being appreciated.
- ‘comment on a fic’
Find a fic, on any fic-hosting site you like, and leave a comment. That’s it! Again, no need to leave a novel-length comment (unless you’re inspired!) – a sentence or two is all we’re asking for this square to be considered complete. This is a great opportunity to let a writer know how their piece made you feel, or what section you particularly liked.
- ‘message a creator’
‘Creator’ here can mean anyone who makes *anything* to do with fandom: art, edits, fic, meta, knitted sweaters with character faces on them – if they’ve made anything, they’re a creator, and now’s your chance to let them know they’re appreciated. Send a message (anonymous or not!) letting them know that you enjoyed their work!
- ‘rec a curator’
You know that one blog that's just a joy to follow? They find and post all the stuff you love, whether that's art or fic or screencaps or really elaborate fan theories that just make you want to applaud. Maybe they write great tags that help you understand the fandom you're in a little better, or maybe they're in the know about what's happening in your fandom, or maybe they're just fun to see on your dashboard. This is your chance to rec a great fandom curator -- one of those people who put in the effort on tumblr to make your scroll a better place. Please make a little rec post, tag the blog and explain why they're a great follow, and show them that their work is appreciated, too!
- ‘promo a fan project’
Here's where you get to help boost the boosters. Fan projects are great: they encourage creators to get together and make more of the stuff that makes fandom fun to be in. Find any fan project you love -- this can be a brand new big bang, a kinkbingo that runs every year, an old art exchange that you loved and wish could happen again -- and then help people see it! Reblog their announcement post, their fic/art masterlist, make a little rec post for it and link to their blog/AO3 collection/Livejournal -- anything that lets people know that the project exists. Maybe you'll get more people to join in, or more people to admire the work, or maybe if it's an old or abandoned event you'll get people excited about running it again! Can't hurt to try.
And here’s the non-decorated version of the card, in case you feel like making it your own. Go hog wild! (Seriously, put hogs on it if you want.)

So, uh… in “theory”, what the heck does one do if they find their posts (and the posts of others) reposted onto another website? And it’s not just a case of a popular post getting screenshotted and breaking containment on Pinterest or something, these are outright the pictures you yourself posted, usually with the captions you yourself wrote, put up by someone else on Instagram as if they were theirs with absolutely no credit to the people who originally made them.
Story time under the cut…
~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve been sitting on this for about a month feeling like I’m losing my mind and not quite being able to tell whether I’m overreacting or not, but it’s all been incredibly bizarre. I happened upon this person completely by coincidence — I got a Classic Who post recommended to me, then checked out the person it came from because Im always happy to find another Classic Who page to follow (and because their url is even lifted from a tumblr user, I thought it may have been them at first so I was curious), and lo and behold as I scroll down their stuff I find myself looking at… me. Repeatedly. Like, a rather surprising amount of my own posts. Then I noticed there was quite a bit of @junkyardbluebox as well (whose url is the one being used), and a fair few @unwillingadventurer, along with other posts that I’ve seen before but couldn’t tell you who made them.
I commented on one of the posts that was my own, saying that some of these were mine and that I recognized others, and calmly asked out of curiosity why the reposting without credit to any of us. I don’t remember my exact wording anymore but it was very polite, like “can I please ask” levels of polite, nothing that should have come across as being judgmental or upset, because for all I knew maybe this person just genuinely didn’t understand that it’s generally frowned upon to repost other people’s things as your own and I didn’t want to be rude at all. I wish I had taken a screenshot, but I wasn’t exactly anticipating that they would straight up delete my comment.
Since then there’s been a strange rollercoaster of this person adding a bunch of new posts as if to bury the stolen ones, then proceeding to repost our stuff again anyway, then hiding and unhiding and rehiding so, so many of their posts over and over (and in the words of another thing I keep seeing on Instagram lately — I wasn’t aware that was something a person could do), like they can’t decide what they want their page to look like.
Every time the stolen posts got hidden I would think maybe they’ve decided against taking other people’s things and I could leave it alone, but they’d inevitably come back, and there continue to be more new posts taken from Classic Who fandom tumblr users. I drew a line when I saw that they had begun posting screen recordings of gifsets made by @stephadoo and decided to try saying something again, this time making sure I had evidence, which is good because this got deleted, too:
Tumblr media
I feel like I bordered into being rude here (probably not, but I felt like it, anyway), but it was one thing to repost pictures that aren’t technically mine because they’re episode screencaps and another to repost gifs that someone actually worked on making themselves. They did end up deleting the gifs (unless they’re just hidden like everything else keeps being, which is always a possibility), but plenty of other stuff is still there — at one point there had been more junkyardbluebox than anyone else, but at the current moment most of those are deleted or hidden, so as I write this most of the copied posts, at least the ones that I recognize, are mine — and they actually reposted a few more of my things immediately after deleting this comment. Everything remains creditless.
Again, part of me feels like I’m completely overreacting to this, but it is weird as heck to see your own posts on somebody else’s page as if they made them, many of them still with your own specific captions — my favorite being some rather detailed thoughts on One and Katarina while watching The Daleks' Master Plan, presented as if those were their thoughts while watching it, and I’m sitting here like
Tumblr media
This is one of the weirdest things that’s ever happened to me and I genuinely have no idea what to do about this, if anything at all (if nothing else I want to get this craziness out of my system!). I don’t want this person to get dog-piled or bullied, but I also think people should know their things are being posted on another platform as someone else’s without any credit — and more than that, by deleting my comments about it it gives the impression that this person doesn’t want evidence to exist that these posts are not theirs, and they deliberately choose to continue not giving credit after being politely asked twice.
For the sake of providing evidence in case these things get hidden again, screenshots of my stuff below…
(So I originally wrote the following in a reply to the post screencaped above. I wanted to reblog this as the S3B is premiering in a couple days and I have major concerns over this potential plot direction. However OP blocked me for my reply and I can’t, however they’re my words so I will repost them as I see fit. Including the original post for context only, and I added some additional clarifying comments.)
…that would be pretty terrible, ngl.
Canon Radovid (in the games, he’s like 12 at the end of the books, although his future turn is hinted at) turns genocidal towards sorceresses and other non-humans both for political power, but also because of the festering resentment of the abuse, manipulations, and wrongs he sees him and father suffer at the hands of the sorceress Phillipa and Dijkstra, including his father’s assassination by an elf at the behest of Phillipa. Phillipa controls him throughout his teenage years. That hate festers in him for years until he grows up, and instead of simply getting revenge on those who personally harmed him and his family, he decides the only way to rule was with an iron fist, and turned that fist against all sorceresses, witches, magic-users and non-humans (both because he hates/fears them, but also for political gain, as these things tend to go). He encourages the non-human hate, uses humans superior numbers to overwhelm and destroy groups of non-humans and magic users. He’s relatively militarily adept too. He made sure of that, because he wanted revenge against Phillipa even as a boy. I don’t think the show would abandon everything that makes Radovid Radovid (but then again, Eskel...), I don’t think he’s just going to be Some Guy. So his sadistic bigotry towards and genocide against all non-humans and (most) human magic-users will come into play at some point. And if it does, his relationship with Jaskier will HAVE to factor in somehow, that’s unavoidable at this point. But should this theory OP mentions come to pass (and there is a good chance it might, I have been concerned about this since it the news leaked of who Jaskier would be paired up with), that would mean the show made a conscious choice to have adult Radovid turn villain…cause his boyfriend dumped him? His boyfriend of like a couple months chose his family of 20+ years over him, and that was enough to make him lose it and just start stabbing everything? Or cause he was angry that Jaskier was using him as a shield because Phillipa was threatening him? And Radovid, a grown ass man, cannot handle this? This would put a homosexual relationship at the core of a xenophobic campaign of witch-burning, be the catalyst of it. And they would put that on Jaskier’s shoulders? Because he dumped Radovid?
Why? What does this do but add cheap angst where it wasn’t needed? There is no need to A.) Start Radovid’s xenophobic hate campaign 15 years early (they have so many world-spanning plots they already can’t write well, why add more?), and B.) connect it directly to someone in the main core cast by having them be the inciting incident for Radovid. That’s unnecessary, that doesn’t offer any narrative improvement to the story at all (FFS, the world is bigger than Geralt, Yenn, Ciri, and Jaskier). And is this the reason Jaskier is now canonically bisexual? Was that the only reason they did that, just to make him the casus belli of a genocide? That really would not be the kind of queer rep anyone should praise, and by god, does it feels downright spiteful.
And to be clear, I don’t think every queer story has to be all sunshine and happiness or perfectly positive (something I’ve been accused of when criticizing questionable writing of gay/bi characters in the past). But there is a vast ocean of difference between “Sunshine and perfection” and “Hey! Let’s change this catalyst for this genocide from ‘Paranoid Fascist takes what should have been a beef between him and like 5 people, and turns it into a full scale witch-burning industry and non-human genocide, for both political gain and cause he’s a paranoid xenophobic fascist’ to 'gay prince super bummed his boyfriend dumped him’, and let’s make sure we wait to show the boyfriend as canonically bisexual until the last possible second, just so people wonder if that’s the only reason we even bothered ”. A vast fucking ocean.
I’m fine with adaptational changes that add to or improve the canon material, or are just different but stand strongly on their own. But this? Would be a terrible miserable hateful idea, and is just cheap writing for forced angst (and I honestly would not put it past the Witcher writers, which is the worst part).
How is this good? How would this an improvement? What does this add? How does this stand on it’s own? Why would they take a bloody campaign of witch-burning and genocide that had a believable catalyst already, and retcon it happening because of The Gays? Cause a dude dumped another dude? If they did this, the writers would have to consciously make the choice to change the catalyst of the genocide to ‘a gay guy was like super bummed that his boyfriend left him for a Witcher’. Do y'all see what that looks like?
sAME ANON! I really do think there was a deal made in that moment, especially in the context of the pages. We see Scoob remembering how Shaggy gave him his life, a friend, EVERYTHING, and it almost directly parallels how Deedee got her powers, so I rlly do think Scoob made a deal to save Shaggy- lmk if im remembering wrong, but the Toones think that bc Shaggy has no Ballyhoo, he has like an empty equipment slot for Ballyhoos right? But to me it just seems Scoob's ballyhoo got boosted to apply to living beings too, it's probably gonna be a huge plot-twist when Shaggy cant use any other ballyhoos?
ALSO I SAW ON A COMMENT ON ONE IF THE PAGES THAT SHAGGY IS GONNA GET SUCH A BIG POWER BOOST WHEN MICK/SHAGGY 2 DIES BC WE AS THE VIEWERS GIVE HIM BALLYHOOS. I also have a huge theory about how their universe's humans cant give Ballyhoo but OUR universe (as in irl) can but im gonna Avoid writing a 5 page essay for now until later unless u wanna hear it
ANON I AM SHAKING YOU BY THE SHOULDERS (affectionate). Literally these asks are making me SO excited omfg I'm so excited to talk about this series!!!! It's SO fucking interesting and exciting and I think it deserves so much more attention.
Okay because I have mutuals n' besties who want to read Scoob and Shag, I'm gonna put my thoughts under the cut for ~spoilers~. But just know anon I am so delighted by these asks thank you for this food
First, I 100% agree with you about the deal--I feel a little silly that I hadn't considered this before, but I think you're right and that's what I think happened!!! Even if it hasn't been confirmed in the sense of us actually SEEING Cyan directly, I do think that's what was intended here. The parallels!!! I'M LOSING MY SHIT.... Also I don't think you're remembering wrong at all, and these are all good points--my brain's kinda mushy rn but I cannot stop thinking about Daphne's dialogue in the new update, as well as some of Shag's dialogue earlier in part two.
The ambiguity surrounding why Scoob's Ballyhoo was able to work on Shag is SO FUCKING FASCINATING to me!!!! I think you're onto something that it was expanded to work on living beings, because that aligns more with the themes and story we've been giving so far than literally saying that Shag isn't really a PERSON, if that makes sense. Daphne referring to him as a thing seems to be more her personal perspective than anything, and I'm really intrigued to see this explored more going forward. Because I really want to know--HOW personal to Daphne is this? Has she always felt that way, to some extent? Because at this point we don't know how many Shag clones there've been. Idk I'm just so interested. Shag being a clone is something I really want to see be explored more going forward, honestly.
ANYWAY BACK TO THE POWERS. I'm actually wondering a bit now if Cyan's deal is meant to tie Scoob and Shag together in some way? I don't know how much sense that makes b/c brain mushy, but idk I think that'd be really interesting thematically.
ALSO YEAH THE ISSUE OF SHAG'S BALLYHOO...... VERY INTRIGUED TO SEE WHERE THIS GOES. And also I think you're onto something with the idea of Us The Viewers giving him a Ballyhoo--the comic has broken the fourth wall before, especially with Bugs in her first introduction, and I think that'd be a fun way to tie that all together. I don't think it's going to happen for a while, but I also have no idea how long Dingo is planning for this story to be, so I guess we'll find out :)
Also GRASPS YOUR HANDS GENTLY... PLEASE SEND ME YOUR ESSAY..... I REALLY WANT TO KNOW YOUR THEORY..... (no pressure ofc but genuinely I'm really interested to know your thoughts)
this is me rn
a fairly informal breakdown of the bob’s burgers movie trailer someone found on snapchat
so a few weeks ago i wrote breakdowns/analysis of the first and second trailers for the movie but last night on reddit i saw someone found a trailer on snapchat that contains some footage i hadn’t seen before!!! so i took screencaps from the bits that were new to me and i’m gonna talk about my observations, theories, and (possible) connections to the other trailers!!
don’t look under the read more if you don’t want to see any pics from the trailer (ik some people like to avoid spoilers entirely), or if you don’t want to load a bunch of images right now (i have way less than i did for the first two since it’s shorter but there’s still a good number of screencaps in this post). also at the bottom of the video there’s a little popup that occludes the lower 20% or so of the picture; i do not control the UI of snapchat.
(also pls dont rb this bc there’s a lot of people on this hellsite that i do not want interacting with me, there’s a reason i didn’t put this post in the main tags, just wanted to get my thoughts out somewhere)
because it’s a snapchat trailer the images are all in portrait instead of landscape, which is a blessing for me not wanting to turn my phone to take caps and a curse because it’s hard to make out what’s happening in a lot of these.
(note: the text in colored bubbles is the dialogue in the trailer)
Tumblr media
so as many people would guess (particularly because of the sinkhole) there’s a grand re-re-re-re-opening at some point, likely the end of the movie. also if it’s the end, note that louise is still wearing her bunny ears; her character arc apparently revolves around her thinking about maturity and possibly not wearing them anymore, so i’m assuming she keeps em (which makes sense in both a watsonian and doylist context: louise’s ears are CLEARLY very important to her, they’re her #1 comfort object; they’re also the most iconic part of her design and make her silhouette very unique and also make her look taller which helps visually group her with her siblings around the same height: despite being younger than gene and tina, she hangs out with them all the time and often has a strong grasp on social situations they’re involved in and is generally kind of “wise beyond her years” sometimes which is represented by her having an accessory that makes her look taller
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here we see gene in his pajamas, then he jumps up and turns around and is instantly in his rockstar outfit. i’m guessing this is from (an earlier part of) the scene where they’re onstage and then a ufo with robots inside shows up, which i suspect is gene’s imagination b/c gene loves robots and aliens and both are a little too fanciful to appear in the actual setting of bob’s burgers. him instantly changing clothes is also a hint that it’s a dream/fantasy sequence. also note he’s holding his napkin dispenser/spoon contraption, but it’s decorated with stars and lightning bolts which is adorable and also connects to that line in “video killed the gene-io star” when he says he signs his name with 4 lightning bolts, a peace sign, and a yin-yang
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here we see linda putting louise’s iconic bunny ears on her head, POSSIBLY for the first time? someone in the comments of the reddit post said it looks like toddler louise. looking at the christmas cards from the credits sequence of “die card or card trying”, that tracks; she’s around this same size in the 4th picture, which is the oldest one where we see her with the hat. i am SO EXCITED to see the story of the ears and why she’s so attached to them
Tumblr media
half the reason i took this screencap is because louise’s face is HILARIOUS but also in the background we see a whole bunch of (i believe) small plush toys that are PROBABLY wonder wharf prizes. in the second trailer we see a rack of similar plushies drawn in the same style; they don’t quite resemble the style used for characters and props that are actually animated but now i think that can be chalked up to them being in backgrounds.
Tumblr media
bob and linda high-fiving in the bank. hopefully because they’re able to pay off those debts! this is one of the moments i was talking about that’s hard to capture in a screenshot due to being in portrait and not landscape 😔
Tumblr media Tumblr media
tina and gene dancing, in what i’m pretty sure is the trailer park musical number. i actually think the trailer park is where a lot of the wonder wharf employees live since its surroundings seem to be in close proximity to wonder wharf and because some of the residents we see dancing in this sequence are also in some of the scenes at wonder wharf proper
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
near the end of the trailer there’s this very badass sequence of the belcher family in a little seashell car (the same one calvin and felix are driving the kids around in in the first trailer; the lights and hinges on the back are the same and you can see it’s scalloped like a shell in the first trailer) busting through a wall under the dock (it looks like it might be below where the bathrooms are?). this pretty much confirms that they were driving around in under-dock storage at wonder wharf. another interesting detail (that could be completely coincidental) is that the kids are sitting in the same order when bob and linda are driving as they were when calvin and felix were driving: louise is in the middle, with tina on her left hand side and gene on her right hand side. this could mean absolutely nothing but it could also mean these are the same/consecutive scenes and felix and calvin got out of the car, then linda and bob got in the car. (i double-checked to see if the kids ALWAYS sat in that order in the car and it’s not the case: in “bed bob and beyond” they’re sitting in reverse order, while gene is in the middle at the beginning of “it snakes a village”.)
this makes me wonder whether the statue calvin twists the nipples on in the first trailer (what a phrase...and it is entirely accurate to the trailer) is at wonder wharf (i assumed it was at his house because it looks WAY too nice to be at wonder wharf, but it’s a merman which fits the nautical theme) and whether it or the storage has anything to do with the kids falling through a trapdoor in the second trailer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the last bit of new footage in the trailer is a scene of gene and louise surrounded by other kids (probably at school) with a tape, which i SUSPECT is the footage they captured in the scene seen in both trailers where they’re exploring the sinkhole in their pajamas and louise falls in. (in that scene gene wants his gasp to be dramatic which solidifies that it’s the same scene for me.)
note: these caps only cover the new content; there are other bits in this trailer that we’ve seen previously.
Send in the Clowns analysis (eh?) pt1
For my good friend @midsomer4life, who wanted me to do an analysis of Send in the Clowns (S20, E6)
It’s not really an analysis, more like me fangirling over a few things in some screencaps
Okay, first of all, this matching shot of Neil and Nick’s names:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So right off the back, they’re using the same shot for their credits, the shot then changes for the next amount of credits. Most of the other episodes don’t do this, instantly setting up that close relationship between John and Jamie.
It probably doesn’t mean anything, it just stood out to me.
Then there’s this interaction with the Barnaby family:
Tumblr media
And almost instantly, John has to bring up Jamie for no reason at all:
Tumblr media
(He’s just sad Jamie isn’t having family bonding time with them)
But it also shows that Jamie and John regularly talk about food with each other. Not to get too personal, but this is something I do with my friends. It’s a common ground and we usually end up spending most of our time talking about food. So if John and Jamie are having a similar converation to group of 7 17-year-old girls, then they are very close on my account.
Then this line which recognises Jamie’s only been there for a short amount of time:
Tumblr media
I’m not entirely sure how long Jamie’s meant to have been there, but if we assume each season is a year, then this, as Ep6, is near the end of the second year. We see Jamie wearing a coat, but not John. (The countryside is generally colder than the city, and Nick said in an interview before the launch of S19, he mentioned something about London, so we can assume Jamie’s either from London, or a sorrounding area, such as Cambridgeshire or my county of Hertfordshire, both of which are quite posh areas actually) We’ve seen Jamie wear just shirts in the seasons before, so this much be a significant drop in temperature, suggesting a later month, maybe September or October due to the lack of frost and breath in the air.
At the end of that rant, this line just shows Jamie’s been there for about 2 years tops.
Fleur’s comment about a ex-date of hers
Tumblr media
And Jamie and John’s subsequent reations:
Tumblr media
(Jamie’s face is exactly the same as mine when people start talking about this kind of thing)
This part, where Sarah takes Betty out of the scene just before the murder in a truly realistic way:
Tumblr media
This is clever because it’s realistic, it takes Betty out of the scene in a way that makes sense for a three-to-five-year-old (I don’t know exactly how old she’s meant to be, but she was quite young in The Village that Rose from the Dead (S19, E1), and if this is a year later, she can’t be older than five), and it’s established Betty likes clowns, so taking her out of the scene in which a clown is killed is just perfect writing, and, let’s face it, she won’t know Terry was the clown, so it keeps her from being traumatised for life and associating something she loved with death.
John’s reaction when he realised something is wrong:
Tumblr media
He’s not a DCI for nothing, folks (plus his psychology degree)
Jamie’s comment on the Betty situation:
Tumblr media
He obviously cares about Betty, and this comment just confirms how much of a bond he has with her. At the end of Crime and Punishment (S19, E2), we see Betty playing with Jamie before John interupts him and Sarah starts a little conflict between Jamie and Kam because she wants to see them get together.
A little off-rant, but the two Barnaby children looking out for each other.
This is less of an analysis and just-
Tumblr media
The height difference-
Tumblr media
Pfft-
Jamie’s got like an entire head on John. Son is taller than his father, I can’t-
This infamous scene, which possibly started @tiger-moran‘s headcanon that Jamie is attracted to food and food alone (I mean, fucking mood):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
John also commenting on Fleur bringing food to Jamie (@midsomer4life, my idea about John and Fleur bringing Jamie food cuz they think Jamie doesn’t eat enough still stands if you wanna take it on)
Plus, Jamie’s face when he bites into that doughnut, it looks like a mixure of gratitude for the food and ‘what do you have planned, did you rig this doughnut with knock-out pills or something?’
Jamie putting his jacket over the back of his chair the same way I do, ironically:
Tumblr media
Plus Fleur stealing Jamie’s chair and then praising herself for her good work. Absolutely, Queen, treat yourself for that groundbreaking discovery.
(I know this scene was meant to parrody the stereotype of police officers eating doughnuts, but I think its true meanings go deeper than ‘let’s fuck with stereotypes’)
Fleur eating that doughnut while John and Jamie just stand there
Tumblr media
.....
Are you gonna eat that doughnut, Jamie? Cuz I kinda want it...
Right, I’m gonna leave this part here, I’ll do some more tomorrow. There’s like an hour of the episode left to dig up unrelated and unwanted ideas about.
Ok Y’all Time For My Undertale Crack Theory
I think the monsters use base-12. (I’m going to go ahead and explain base-12 since it’s not common knowledge, if you already know then you can skip the next paragraph!) Basically, base-12 (or duodecimal) is a numerical system in which twelve is the first double-digit number. Counting in duodecimal would look like this: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, X, Ε, 10 With X being equal to ten, Ε equal to to eleven, and 10 equal to twelve. The values are still the same, but the characters used to represent them change. This is admittedly a pretty sucky explanation but if anyone is genuinely curious I can try to do better lol ANYWAY my friend initially brought this up; she immediately paused after getting this dialogue:
Tumblr media
[Image Description: Two text boxes indicate Papyrus’s dialogue. The first reads “I’m just a dozen away...” and the second says “from a double digit follower count!”] If monsters are using duodecimal, this would make a lot more sense! Instead of having -2 followers like he would have in decimal (or 111 if you want to get SUPER nit-picky), he would just have... 0. I think this is probably the most convinving piece of evidence in our favor. Of course it could just be some fun dialogue Toby through in as a joke, but overanalysis is fun so. I’m not stopping there. Next I noticed the in-game year:
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A screencap from the opening sequence. Pictured is a mountain, labelled Mt. Ebbot 201X] So, initially, I believed 201X was meant to indicate some year between 2010 and 2019, with X replacing the last number. BUT if you consider that X is a character marking the value of ten in duodecimal, the year becomes 3478 in decimal (aka base-10, the number system we use). Now if the year had only been mentioned in the opening sequence, it would be a lot easier to play off as an unknown, but it’s written on a calendar in Asgore’s house!
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A screencap from inside Asgore’s house. Frisk is inspecting a bookshelf. The text reads “There’s an old calendar here from the end of 201X. A date is circled on it.”]
You can’t really make a calendar for a nondescript year (unless he’s got just... a nine year calendar?) so it would actually make more sense, in my opinion, for 201X to indicate an exact year in duodecimal than a range of years in decimal. Those are my really hard-hitters, but I also think it’s cool to think about WHY monsters would use duodecimal. The reason humans use base-10 is because we typically have 10 fingers. It would be easier for a person with 10 fingers, 10 ‘digits,’ to use a mathematical system based around the number 10. But as far as I can tell, monsters don’t have 10 fingers. Granted, this could be more related to art-style, but the coincidences are stacking up at this point, right? Look at these sprites:
Tumblr media
[Image Description: Toriel’s death sprite. She’s holding one hand against her chest while the other rests on the floor.}
Tumblr media
[Image Description: Mettaton’s first battle sprite. He holds a microphone in one hand. His other hand is outsretched.] I dug through a lot of sprites trying to count fingers, but these two stood out the most: They both appear to have 4 digits on each hand. If we are to assume that the monsters have been sealed underground for a while, it would make sense for them to eventually convert to a numerical system that fit them better, right? So they would probably want to choose a base divisible by the number of fingers they have on a hand. It just so happens that 12 is divisible by 4.  Sure, they could also use another base like 16, but Papyrus’s initial comment and the fact that X is used instead of A have me leaning towards 12.
TL;DR the monster’s numerical system revolves around the number 12 instead of 10.
Anyway that’s all I can think of at the moment!! If you have any more examples of this or even something that disproves it entirely, please let me know! I’m very fascinated with the possibilites of this rn. Thanks for reading + feel free to reblog with your thoughts if you made it through my lazy ass explanation
TOH Spoilers
Okay okay okay, I've got Thoughts(TM) about Hollow Mind and I'm just gonna list them as briefly as possible here. I might elaborate on a few of them later, though. (I also don't feel like grabbing screencaps so sorry in advance for the wall of text)
-
I believe that Wittebro was the human who once lived in Bonesborough (with his witch wife who may or may not have had the surname Clawthorne) that Gwen mentioned in Keeping Up A-fear-ances. I'm not sure where to place Philip in all that but judging by the progression through the mind paintings it seems that he'd been dabbling in some bad magic even while his brother was still alive.
Belos claims he's a witch hunter. I have several thoughts regarding this:
My theory is that the Wittebane brothers come from a family of witch hunters and that their father was the original founder of Gravesfield. The reason I think this is because we briefly see a third statue in Yesterday's Lie, other than the brothers, of a man in a tricorn hat and tall boots.
It's interesting how Belos continues to fight witchcraft after all this time whereas his brother seems to have taken to it very quickly. I mean, he seemed content enough to settle in the Boiling Isles, marry a witch, and have a child with her.
I have a feeling that Philip didn't intend to kill his brother, but his brother's wife, in order to free him from her witchy wiles or some bullshit. Obviously, it went south, Wittebro defended his wife, and he got stabbed in the process.
I'm almost positive Jacob, the witch-obsessed museum curator from Yesterday's Lie, is distantly related to Belos and for some reason I find that idea hilarious.
I wasn't expecting them to lean quite so heavily into religous zealot territory with Belos but his early stunts to rope witches into his grand scheme is uncomfortably similar to cult recruitment strategies.
"Look at what wild magic has done to your city! Now imagine what it's doing to you. A city can rise from the ashes, but a soul...I can make your magic pure again, as the Titan intended!" UGH UGH UGH DON'T LIKE THAT
Also reminds me of those rich televangelists who prey on people's beliefs for a quick buck UGH
I also wasn't expecting them to go all into the witch genocide route but Belos is straight up planning to kill all of the witches in the Boiling Isles with the Draining Spell.
I want to love the Collector because they've got such an fun design and personality, but the first thing they reminded me of was Jevil from Deltarune and I hate that bastard with a passion (I have yet to defeat him because that fight always gives me a headache 😓)
That being said, they've really got Bill Cipher vibes in a chaotic-trickster-demon-with-malicious-intent kind of way, waiting for a specific event for them to finally be freed and restored to power. They're even similar down to their two-dimensional, abstract designs!
Also, when you think about it, isn't Gravity Falls a portal to a demon realm, of sorts, where weirdness seems to leak through in excess?
I'm very intrigued by the "nine bright hues" comment that we hear from both Belos and the Collector. The colors represent the nine main covens, the nine schools of magic, a rainbow of colors. This reminds me of Steven Universe discussions about White Diamond, how all gems likely originate with her, how white light splits into a multitude of colors when refracted through a prism...Luz means "light," light was the first glyph she learned, it was the one glyph that still eluded Philip...interesting stuff, very interesting.
It was clever of Raine to hide the transportation spell in the flowers because of course Hooty's a sucker for romance, but you know Raine was just trying to flirt with Eda. And maybe also apologize for having a part in this mess in the first place.
Just imagine Eda flipping over the card with the instructions for the spell on it, and it says "P.S. sorry for accidentally traumatizing your kid xoxo"
Also, I really, really hope that Raine and co. stuck around to make sure Eda did the spell correctly. Maybe they intercepted Hunter and took him somewhere safe? One can only hope.
Episode 5′s Light Battalion Scene - Part 1
If someone asked me what my favorite scene in Fate was, there’s always one that comes to mind. I will never ever stop talking about this scene.
Specifically, Episode 5 (9:00-10:10). Or as I like to call it, “The Light Battalion Scene”
We don’t get enough backstory on the adults in this show and it’s a crime, but this one scene has personally fueled more headcanons, story ideas, and theories than any other scene. This is going to be a little long just because I couldn’t sleep without writing this all down.
To start off, their name isn’t canonically The Light Battalion, that’s a choice I made in a fic that just ended up sticking. But the friendship of Farah, Saul, Andreas, and Ben is its own interesting world, and one that this scene manages to portray incredibly well.
I don’t have any screencaps of the beginning (rip) but the scene starts with Andreas and Saul. Obviously these two are already known to have some history, because Saul is implied to have raised Sky after Andreas exited the picture (”aggro father figure”), and he mentions Sky’s dad more times than I can count. But this is the first time we see continuous lines of dialogue between them, and it already tells us so much.
Andreas teases Saul about being on the ground, and in my opinion that’s just best friends being best friends. It’s lighthearted, it’s funny. But then he hits him with the “let me know when you want to start pulling your weight, Saul.” And the air seems to shift a little at that. Andreas implies that he’s the one doing all the work, pulling all the weight in their fighting (it’s implied that they just took down a Burned One as a duo), and sort of passively aggressively jabs at him. Our beloved Saul obviously jabs back, and he brings up Andreas’s son. Ouch. Andreas’s entire mood shifts, and he looks Saul up and down before leaving. In those 30 seconds, we see more of both their characters than we have so far in the entire show.
They obviously were/are friends (very close friends, if Saul took over raising Sky), but their relationship is currently strained. Andreas sees himself as doing all the work, and Saul might be a little peeved that he’s not paying enough attention to his family. But they don’t talk about it, not really, walking away before they can actually get a conversation going. Saul has absolutely no other lines in this scene, and that’s mind blowing to me. But anyway, moving on.
Andreas and Saul rejoin Farah and Ben, and it’s implied that they just managed to take down a Burned One as a duo themselves. Andreas speaks first, and his line “is he dissecting again?” immediately reinforces the fact that there’s history there. Andreas knows Ben likes to dissect these things, and apparently Farah knows that he knows, since (being surprisingly sarcastic) she responds with “what do you think?”
This next part is literally my favorite part of any episode ever. And I hate that I don’t have a screencap of all of it.
Andreas spits on the Burned One’s corpse that Ben is kneeling next to (which... ew). Ben looks up at him, exasperated, going “Or we could contaminate it. Lovely!” And instead of immediately turning back to continue his work, he looks at Farah.
The camera then pans to Farah, who’s got the hottest look ever on her face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She raises her eyebrow at Andreas. As a response, Andreas raises his eyebrows and shrugs at her innocently. The camera pans to Saul, whose eyes flicker from Andreas to Farah (and they look her up and down, cheeky man). Then Rosalind interrupts.
That’s the moment I love most about this entire scene. Those maybe 15 seconds of interaction between four characters we know little to nothing about. So let me break it down really quick.
First of all, Ben looks at Farah. He stands his ground (kinda), sarcastically says “lovely!” but his gaze still moves to Farah for a brief moment. I think he’s looking at her for support, for a friendly face, and maybe subtly for a “can you believe this guy?” type of moment. But Farah’s reaction is to make direct eye contact with Andreas and raise her eyebrows. That’s a challenging look if I’ve ever seen one! She’s looking at him like she wants to smack him, like she’s done with his shit. Her little head tilt (chin jut = pride) at him just reinforces that. Andreas responds. He seems to know what that look means, almost like he knows exactly what she wants to do. So his reaction is to raise his eyebrows and shrug at her-- he didn’t do anything, he’s clearly innocent, he was only having fun.
And that interaction says so much about both their characters. First, I think it shows that Farah might’ve been a little protective of Ben while they were soldiers, or while they were friends with Andreas. Ben is the one that Andreas chose to pick on in this scenario. Granted, he was the one leaning over the corpse and maybe the only one he could’ve picked on, but we just saw him passive aggressively commenting on Saul earlier. But he chose to go and spit over Ben, who looked towards Farah as if asking for help or support. And she’s clearly not afraid to challenge Andreas about it. And he’s clearly not afraid to respond with feigned innocence, although he knows what he did. It makes me wonder if they’ve had this dynamic their entire friendship (or their entire school years). Is it competitiveness?
And then comes Saul. Who, like I said, has no other lines in this scene. I find it odd because this feels like the perfect time for Saul to jump in. Maybe to say something about the Burned Ones, or to Andreas, or to Farah, or just to put his sword away? But he just stands there, looking at Andreas and then at Farah. It’s almost like he expects a fight, expects them to lunge at each other, to say something. It’s like he’s hesitating, or anticipating something. And it makes me wonder if situations like this (an Andreas and Farah stand-off) happened more often than we think.
It’s 15 seconds of body language that could, in the end, just be the actors’ spur-of-the-moment choices. But I want to believe there’s more than that, because we know that these characters have history, and this one tiny scene shows more of it than any other scene in the show. These adults that the fandom so collectively loves have the potential to be so complex and multi-dimensional, and a whole worldbuilding can be done with their backstory. These are real people, soldiers, with real relationships and friendships that I personally want to know more about! These years weren’t implied to be pretty, and if this was a sweeter story I think we could’ve ended up with a light-hearted scene of their training turning out great.
But then Rosalind showed up.
(Part 2 coming soon!)
@worldbeyondtheworld I had to share this. In my playthrough with my sister, we left off midway through the first trial portion of 2-4. Today we opened it up to play some more, and pretty much immediately came upon some moments that perfectly exemplify Phoenix and Edgeworth's different styles of smarts, just like I was talking about the other day!
Phoenix outright states that he can't hold back or he'll lose the trial, so he trusts his instincts and pushes forward, figuring things out as he goes. However, this backfires quickly as Edgeworth already has evidence contrary to his theory prepared (this is from the wine glass in Corrida's room talk). I didn't catch a picture of it, but Phoenix actually thinks "I can't believe I fell into his trap again!". Nevertheless, he rallies quickly and keeps working to uncover more contradictions, jumping from one topic to another as he makes new connections. The last screencap is from much later down the line, after Phoenix has fought his way through like three more testimonies and finally hit upon a theory that he believes will help his client. But Edgeworth just says he expected this to happen and already has the next witness ready, leaving Phoenix reeling. However, Mia comments also that Edgeworth was unusually calm this whole time so she suspected it was all part of his plan, referencing how if things go too far outside of his plan he reacts much more dramatically/takes longer to recover.
It was just hilariously perfect timing to see this demonstrated so succintly. ^_^
Are you aware that Sam’s friend and co-star, Ruby Rose, from his recent movie SAS: Red Notice actually corrected a troll’s gay comment about Sam? This was back in 2019 when they were still filming the movie and it was on Sam’s Instagram. Sam wrote under his picture and said this,
samheughan Coming soon, to a cinema near you...
rubyrose I can’t believe we are both in Budapest doing a film. That’s so crazy!
The troll, dnturmr, at rubyrose he’s gay sweetie
rubyrose at dnturmr no, I’m gay sweetie 🤣
Sam even liked the response by Ruby Rose. Some of the Antis/Original Truthers still have it on their blog and there are over a 100 notes to that post. It is all screecapped. Ruby Rose is a part of the LGBT community because she came out as a Lesbian and I don’t think she would have replied to that troll if Sam was in the “closet” or she knew he was gay. The conspiracy theories about Sam are so stupid and that troll was an embarrassment. It was cringe-worthy. I love Ruby Rose 🌹 and I think she is awesome! ❤️ Another co-star of Sam’s who came out as gay is John Bell 💙 🌈 and he supported Sam’s relationship with MM by liking a picture Sam posted of them together when they were dating. Just more proof that some of CRT’s followers are wrong about Sam.
Thanks for sharing this information and your thoughts about it Anon!
I didn’t remember this episode but I went and looked it up on S’s IG  and what happened is exactly how you described it Anon. Below is a screencap of those comments as they appear today. (Note that dnturmr changed their account name to greenshores since the time the comments were made).
Tumblr media
I agree Anon. I believe that as a member of the LGBTQ+ community it is highly unlikely that Ruby Rose would have covered for S like that if he were actually gay. More likely, she would have simply ignored the remark.
I didn’t know that John Bell also liked one of S’s photos when he was involved with MM. Again, most gay people in this day and age aren’t going to go out of their way to support closeting. Although they aren’t going to “out” anyone either, most aren’t going to make themselves a party to closeting. JMHO
All For One is the Father of Nana’s Son and Grandfather to Shigaraki
Before I get into the nitty gritty, I’d like to thank all the people who’s inboxes (and in one case dorm) I burst into to yell about this as I wrote it, and the people who proofread it (often overlapping). Your support has been greatly appreciated.  This has been a theory I’ve been thinking about since chapter 235, and I’m happy to finally write it up.  Based on dialogue, Star Wars, and similar physical features between the characters, I’ve come to believe that it is highly likely that All For One is the Father of Nana’s Son and Grandfather to Shigaraki.
Edit: it didn’t show up in the tags at first because of an external link for a source but that’s been fixed
Edit2: Added Part about AFO giving Shigaraki his surname!
Dialogue
The more I reread All Might’s final battle with All For One, the more one thing nags at me.  Why (and how) does All For One know Nana’s full name (and also that cute smiling pose?  Where did he learn about it?)?  He doesn’t know the civilian name of All Might, despite saying directly to his face how much he loathes him.  He also doesn’t know Gran Torino’s civilian name even though his surname is in his hero name, and Nana outright says his first name in All Might Rising.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hell, he only barely recognizes him as “Shimura’s Friend..?”, despite him pretty much being the guy who grabbed All Might and got out of the fight.  Why remember Nana Shimura’s full name and not the others?
Star Wars and Koseki/Family Records
It’s no secret that Horikoshi is a huge Star Wars fanboy.  There are so many Star Wars references ranging from obscure to blatant to “the official sub and dub had to change it for copyright reasons”.  Perhaps the most prominent reference to Star Wars is All For One.  His life support mask and revealing of Shigaraki’s relationship to Nana is quite reminiscent of Darth Vader, no?  When a Darth Vader reference appears, it is often in tandem with him.  In the original trilogy, Obi-wan Kenobi tells Luke Skywalker that his father was killed by Darth Vader.  We all know that’s a lie, though one could interpret it as true to a degree.  With the rise of Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker could be said to have “died”.  Through Gran Torino, we learned that Nana’s husband was killed.  That’s it.  That’s all we know.  It’s possible that Nana lied about her husband dying literally.  For all we know, her husband died the day she found out he was All For One.  Adding on more Star Wars references, when talking over the outline for this with my friend, they noted how Nana and All For One as a couple could potentially mirror Padme and Anakin.  In both examples, the latter (on the “dark side” or moving there pretty swiftly) killed the former.  In any case, how could Nana cover up her husband’s death?  Same way she hid her connection to her son.  In the most recent chapter (281 at the time of this writing), we learned that Nana tinkered with the family records, known as Koseki.  I had a difficult time getting information on these, but from my understanding, while they were relatively easy to get access to at one point, these days only family members are able to.  Good thing, because according to this site (linked through tumblr) they contain “an individual’s full name; gender; birthdate and birthplace; parental relations (names of parents, relations to them, etc.); spousal relations (name of spouse, date of marriage, date of divorce, etc.); data related to the death of an individual (date, time, place of death); name of legal custodian or legal guardian; and data related to inheritance, such as the disinheritance of a presumed heir.” The same site also says “The information recorded in each family register is based on formal declarations made by citizens to their local government (municipality) at the time of a child’s birth, marriage, etc,” and that the information given to the municipalities is “submitted on a pro forma basis -there are cases in which an individual intentionally or negligently makes a false declaration’ that is subsequently incorporated as an entry in a family register,” lining up with Nana’s comment about tinkering with the family register.
Physical Similarities Between All For One, Kotaro, Shigaraki, and the First User of One For All
This is the part that got me started on this line of thinking.  Over a year ago when chapter 235 was released, I realized that this shot of Kotaro looked… startlingly familiar.
(The anime version’s a little brighter than the scan)
Their angular features and rather defined noses were very similar, an oddity for a series with such a distinct cast of characters.  In fact, the only characters with very similar features are usually related to one another (Mom genes are a joke for a reason).  The BNHA discord I’m in agreed with me.  Around a month later, I considered the possibility that the fact I’ve been drinking Nana/AFO juice practically since I joined the fandom may have influenced my judgement.  So I sent two separate panels of Kotaro and AFO to a friend of mine.  She’s not interested in BNHA, and the only context I gave to the panels was that they were BNHA panels I wanted her to look over.  That was it.  The conversation we had is screencapped below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If people interested in BNHA and someone uninterested in BNHA could see it, then I was onto something.  Recently, I remembered her response to the panels and that launched me into full theorist mode.  Exceedingly late on August 25, I spent at least thirty minutes scouring the manga for panels of Kotaro and pre-injury All For One. looking for more physical similarities.  And boy, did that search deliver.
Similarly Defined Noses
A friend even pointed out how, though it’s difficult to see with Kotaro due to a limited range of expressions, that All For One and Kotaro share a crinkle around the mouth. They’re correct.
Tumblr media
You could even make a case that they look similarly broad shouldered as well.
Tumblr media
This extends to Shigaraki as well, as in at least one panel in Volume 11, he’s drawn with a similarly defined nose.
Tumblr media
All For One isn’t the only Shigaraki that Tomura Shigaraki bears resemblance too.  It’s been said before that Shigaraki bears quite the resemblance to the first user of One for All, and it’s easy to see why.
Tumblr media
Their hair is drawn in an eerily similar way. Their eyes too.  Looking closely, I’m starting to think their noses look pretty similar too.
Tumblr media
They also kind of look similar to All For One’s eyes (what’s visible of them) and nose too.  While I can’t be certain, I’m willing to bet that if Horikoshi suddenly decided to draw All For One with longer hair (and show more of his face), he’d look quite similar to Shigaraki (and his younger brother) as well.  People have speculated that Shigaraki is related to the first One For All user, and I agree. I believe that he’s his grand uncle, and I believe All For One is his paternal grandfather.
August 29 2020 Addition
I didn’t think to add this to the theory until after I posted so here’s the addition (which I’ll add to the main theory post later).  Why did All For One give Shigaraki his surname?  It could be argued that it’s a power play or something by replacing Nana’s surname with his own, but wouldn’t All For One take that opportunity to rub it in All Might’s face?  Wouldn’t hearing “Oh yeah I also gave your master’s grandson a part of my name” after you found out he was her grandson from your enemy hurt like hell?  You could write it off as a private middle finger but that doesn’t make much sense to me.  All For One has the subtlety of a freight train when being petty.  He could easily say it’s his name to anyone because he’s A) a minimum of a century old and B) known to have been born/raised during the time period when quirks were first sweeping the globe.  Any records on him could have been lost/destroyed in the passing years or during the chaos.  Hell, he could have destroyed them himself.  It’s safe to say that there is no one alive but All For One and Shigaraki who knows the significance of the name “Shigaraki”.  When the UA staff was researching Shigaraki Tomura and Kurogiri after the attack on the USJ, they concluded that both were using aliases.
Tumblr media
While all we’re told outright is that they checked the quirk registry for the two, I’m inclined to believe that’s not all they did.  Villains, for what seems to be the first time in history or awhile, attacked U.A. Highschool with murderous intent towards a teacher and his students.  Said teacher also just so happens to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest hero of all time.  There’s no way they’re just going to do a sweep through the quirk registry and call it a day.  Yet they don’t find anything on the name “Shigaraki”.  No one knows about this name, and he doesn’t say anything about it.  All For One could have given any name to Shigaraki.  So why his own?  I don’t think it’s for one last middle finger to Nana - he’d make a huge show out of doing that to All Might.  To me, I think it’s because they’re grandfather and grandson.  Perhaps it was some twisted form of sentimentality?  A twisted way of acknowledging a family member?  It’s the only thing that makes sense.
