🌸. Marauders AU: Harry Potter

so I mentioned my little au before where voldy never existed and everyone from the marauders era lives right. I'm planning to write more about them soon but first let me share a few of my ideas for Harry in this au because I have a lot of them. please bear with the unorganized mess of thoughts (really. it's a mess.)

alternatively; I take JK's character and twist it a bit to make it my own ♡

son of James Potter and Regulus Black!! (don't ask how he came to be I'm sure there's some way to make it work with magic and it's my au so I make the rules.)

just like in the books he's the spitting image of James, except for his eyes. he has REGULUS' EYES. a really pretty blueish grey :)

he is SPOILED ROTTEN. how can he not be with loving parents and what feels like a thousand loving uncles and aunts

sass x1000. he gets it from Reg.

he's still a griffyndor, still befriends Ron and Hermione, but because of Reg and Pandora's friendship he's also really close with Luna!

not planning to pair him with ginny. not that I think they wouldn't work well together because they definitely would, I just really want to see her with Luna :)

haven't decided who he'll end up with but no it will NOT be draco because they are legitimate relatives now

harry becoming the youngest seeker in the last century both fills James with pride and joy as breaks his heart as a chaser. Regulus is overjoyed and really smug about it

having grown up around the notorious marauders it's a given that harry becomes a prankster of his own, just a little less enthusiastic.

this meaning that he tries to avoid detention as much as possible and with both the cloak and the map it works pretty well.

to be fair being friends with Hermione he'd definitely get scolded for getting in trouble which is one more reason to be as discreet as possible

his favorite class is defence against the dark arts, partially because of the professor (moony)

Sirius, who's the transfigurations professor, is offended.

(don't worry Minnie still exists. she's just headmistress now because I didn't feel like keeping Dumbledore)

he's actually a really bright child! doesn't score as high as Hermione but still well above average. he often helps Ron with his homework

sometimes he forgets to address Remus and Sirius by their last names in class and just calls them (uncle) moony and pad

Remus just gently corrects him but melts on the inside. Sirius loves it, bonks him with a piece of parchment before correcting him. he'll make sure to tease the kid later

honestly everyone loves him. he's just so amazing

the perfect balance of james' bright and cheerful personality and Regulus' sass

he has a lot of admirers but bless the boy he's so oblivious to it

harry gets the familial love he deserves and everyone cheers

oh but keep him away from Barty and Evan. they will influence him.

or tell embarrassing stories about Regulus which harry loves to hear about. Reg does not love it.

I wanna talk about ST but the way I wanna talk about it is like a very pretentious art student-y way where I don’t really wanna discuss the content of the material, rather I wanna discuss the process and how and why they chose to do what they did from a creator standpoint and I wanna see all their notes and abandoned threads that they severed or repurposed for something else and I wanna see the thought process of the creative team to whittle it all down to the final product. talking about the story itself is inherent in that conversation, but I want to come at it from the standpoint of speaking objectively about a piece of art and how it is created rather than the meaning of the story. or something. I can’t articulate it but I just want to gush about art as art and the work that goes into creating something and all the messy behind the scenes rather than just the final product

#im posting this very late because i was sort of weary of how it came out and ended up messing w it until it was like 4am oops. #and i have plans tmrw so... oh well! i did my best and ill put it out while i can! #and i tried to make the scene match barnard's colors lol #finn's ocs #finn's art #i know i said id do more sillay stuff with the simpler screentone only style but i had a couple more of these in me #and this is the first piece im making thats like an actual part of the story too rather than just setting stuff for fun #i wanna write something to go with it too but for now ill just sort of briefly explain the context in the tags here: #barnard has a pretty bad case of OCD and his compulsions have made it difficult to make friends in the past #he was never outright bullied or anything but people just didnt really have the patience to deal with it #he has compulsions that include stuff like walking through doors until it feels right and needing things to be perfectly aligned #which in group settings has lead to people having to wait for him to finish his rituals and join them #they might find it tolerable at first but eventually they grow impatient and hes just... not invited to stuff anymore #but juno is a newer member of the guild who ends up frequenting the same library. hes also kinda a little weird #and they dont become fast friends or anything but just sort of naturally spend time in the same place #though they never plan meetups they eventually fall into a routine. around the same time theyd just both be at the library #and read next to each other. and maybe talk a bit. and eventually they end up walking back to the guildhall together #since theyre going to the same place after all. and juno always waits for barnard outside the door #eventually barnard asks if this bothers him. juno kinda just tells him 'of course it does' without any malice or anything. just a statement #barnard is surprised and apologizes and juno says not to. but the next day juno doesnt show up at the usual time. #barnard assumes hes committed somekinda more by bringing it up. he ends up staying there late reading to get his mind off it & not ruminate #but when he leaves juno is in fact still waiting for him down the hall (see pic) having collected a bunch of books literally abt ocd #he fell asleep bc barnard stayed later than expected. and hes an eepy guy generally. and also one very bad at expressing himself #but now barnard gets that juno's 'of course it [bothers me]' had the implication of 'but its worth it' which no friend has previously done. #and from the interaction juno was also able to understand that this isn't something barnard just does for the hell of it so. he studies. #and checks a bunch of stuff out because he thinks it could help his friend too (theres ocd workbooks and such- i remember working w them) #and thats the point where they became more ''friends'' than ''pleasant library acquaintances'' #from there on they also do get into juno's problems. whole other bag of worms. but this specific scene is more about bernard from his pov #sorry about when i said briefly explain. i lied </3 #but compared to the whole sequence im picturing its brief so shhh

okay I am watching D20 - Neverafter for the first time and there are fanfics where snowwhite, cinderella and sleeping beauty are in a polyamorous relationship right? There are fanfics of then going through the horrors of wakeing up in their stories over and over again. In the beginning always with a memory loss and that feeling of something being off. Between the magic and the destined love it's like a cold wind blowing through the cracks of reality.

Wakeing up to reunite with their true love. Not their destined one but the one they chose each day they had the freedom to. The ache of knowing they will be seperated again. Probably forgetting again.

The memories pileing up, the princesses holding onto their memories until they can't forget anymore. but still they have to play along with a story outside of their hands until they snap. And the first fairy ends up with a glas shard in her chest and the princess breaks free.. hopefully for good.

And then them waiting for sleeping beauty. Searching for her desperately only to find she died and she forgot everything they shared. Talking about a prince and having to hold back when all you wanna do is wrap her in your arms. Telling her about how snow white learned alot of magic since she broke free (don't you remember? how she tought you your first spells please remember) and argh

An important thing to remember as an artist that started out drawing characters crudely and then started learning the fundamentals, at first your art will not look nice.

At first, drawing faces and bodies in different positions will make your characters look weird, then poor perspective will make your characters look weird, and finally when all the kinda things I mentioned above will be dealt with, just the hype of finally knowing how to draw anatomy will bite you in the ass because you can do all these things, you can draw them correctly or close to that, but whether that's figure drawing knowledge gaps, or awkwards poses/composition, or just not a very harmonious combination of realism and stylization in facial features or in general, but your before and after pictures might get this look of "clear objective technical improvement but many would consider it a downgrade"

That's a very common thing. I used to be in this before/after art community, and it was so toxic it was a meme within the community that no matter how much you've improved there will be people that will say that the before is better. There's a seed of truth to these words though, what they fundamentally get wrong is this implication that you "ruined your art"

That's a big example of why you shouldn't listen to non-art people for art advice. Keep going. You're closer to your art dreams than you ever were, you just need to look into all these things like the remaining knowledge gaps or personality to your art you might've lost as you were on your anatomy grind.

Keep creating, keep looking at art that inspires you and try to think of how to make yourself like your art better. Don't get stuck on it, if it begins being unfun, please do take a breather. Also, none of that is objective, people will still prefer things different to what you find beautiful. It's alright, create what you like, that's what this post is about. If you don't wanna, don't focus on aesthetics, just the process of creating art is fun and will eventually get you in the right place, that's what I do, I just occasionally throw in things I like and sometimes they work. Take care.

These are my current thoughts on the topic. I wouldn't take them too close to heart, this is just a blogging site and I'm blogin 👍

I'm drawing Kakashi for the first time (as much as I love them, I rarely ever draw naruto characters so this is a little fun and new for me) and I'm struggling a little bc I'm trying to draw him relaxed, reclining with pakkun (in the way I recline with my cat) and I'm realizing there's something so personal abt drawing him in such a vulnerable pose ig. Like? I'm very tired too rn so maybe I'm being extra emotional and rambly but there are so few scenes of kakashi in canon where he's not wearing the jounin vest, where he's alone and relaxed and out of uniform. And I didn't realize it until I was trying to think back to other similar scenes and there really weren't any. and I'm kind of mesmerized by how you draw him because you capture that so so well, your art is gorgeous but it's also so real and expressive in a way that shows a lot of practice and a lot of love. Idk i think I've said this before and I'm sorry if it's annoying that I'm saying it again (I'll just shut up after this lol) but I went to an art school and I had massive burnout and only really started drawing again in the past 6 months and you were one of my inspirations 2 start drawing again and I'm still not as good as I'd like to be but I draw so much more now and having an actual passion for art has led to a huge improvement, so thank you and thank u for bearing with me and my sleep-deprived rambles. djhsdkjghsdkjhg thank u for all the compliments abt my art, i do work really hard in order to draw expressive characters, and spend a lot of time paying attention to how the small details in posture and expression change how the character comes across, and im glad it pays off!

also yeah no, similarly, once i left art school (when the pandemic hit) i did have a good 6 months where i did not pick up the pencil even once, and like, usually i feel rlly bad or guilty when i'm not drawing, but my burnout was real bad and i was straight up angry abt everything dgkjhsdgkjh so i just...didn't draw for like 6 months. i didn't even feel bad about it bc i was too busy being angry

and i had a bad relationship with art at the time and eventually realized i kind of had to like? make a different relationship with art—like, try to stop seeing art as something which gave me fundamental worth as a human being, or part of who i am? you know? that's a LOT of pressure to put on just...something that i do. if i took that kind of approach to literally any other task in my life, i'd never do it. imagine thinking that the way and style with which you descend the stairs gives you your worth as a person and if you don't do it exactly right then it means you're worthless as a person? buddy i'd just find a way to go down and out through the window LMAO

i think this is the thing which gives a lot of people burnout, it's exhausting to be constantly working on something and ALSO believe that if you fuck it up even a little, it's because you are the fuckup, and a fundamental failure of a person. god thats so much pressure.

anyway so i decided to make a naruto art blog because i don't even like naruto That Much but my best friend had been trying to get me into it for years (ty kate ilu kate), and so any art that i made would be purely for fun, wouldn't have anything to do with my self worth, and might make kate laugh too, and that's why this blog exists! and taking the pressure off of creating art like that has been enormously helpful to my mental health and my ability to create, also i take breaks alllllll the time, i'm like...way healthier about my art thanks to that, and also just...a nicer person, i think? anyway i'm very glad that i inspired you to get back into art but i'm far more glad that you've found a passion for it, cultivating that passion and joy is so important

#a lot of the way i approach art is bc i worked with kids for a while and like. u can kinda tell when a kid is at the breaking point w/ art #where they're like ''if one more thing goes wrong i am going to Lose It'' #+ at that point as a ''teacher'' u have to pick between giving them critique on their artwork to improve OR letting it go + saying their #art is good and they're doing really well #and i always pick the second one—LIKE. once the kid is no longer feeling soooo frustrated abt their art that they're at a breakin point? #THEN we can talk critique. and even then i will still tell them what they're doing well #until theyre at that point tho its all ''yeah!!! you're killing it! look at these new skills you're learning! look how you're improving!'' #''look how funny/beautiful/exciting/cool your piece is!!!!'' #because first and foremost. i think that art should be enjoyed #having creation as a friend and ally vs A Duty is sooo important #TO BE CLEAR LIKE. this is also still technically a form of critique #i dont just say ''good job champ! great work doing art!'' if u wanna compliment art and have it mean something you do have to be #specific about what is good...not ''that looks great!'' but ''wow you draw really fabulously detailed noses! #or ''wow the fashion you're drawing is really cool—i wish i had that jacket!'' like. #as in all things. compliments and praise are only meaningful if they are /meant/ and you cant fake that #MY POINT IS. if we want to take the pressure off ourselves with art. i think we also gotta treat ourslves like this #look at what we're doing and compliment things we genuinely think weve improved upon. love our successes #nothing better for the ego than to compare new art to old art and look at what weve changed #i should do some redraws at some point #my jutsu

the difference between the fourth wall breaks of something like the Deadpool movies compared to something like Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is that every joke in Deadpool feels masturbatory like the writers think they're so hilarious for doing a fourth wall break like that's never been done before whereas both of the other two not only feel right at home with the characters' personalities but are much more natural and much more well done compared to the jokes in Deadpool or its sequel. (do not get me started on Deadpool 2, the movie sucks ass in basically every way except for the characters of Domino and Yukio. every single joke in it was outdated before it was even written. they were making fucking dubstep jokes in 2018. it was a 2012-ass script made way too late and riding on the coattails of the first with even less effort into being actually good.)

but the difference between those properties is that Deadpool wants to be congratulated for being some insanely crazy shocking movie that's pissing off the studio system or whatever but every single joke in it was approved by those people because it makes them money like it's so antithetical to the entire point they're trying to make and it makes for a very infuriating watching experience sometimes. the cognitive dissonance is hard to swallow with that one. but the way BOPATFEOOHQ and She-Hulk do their bits feels so much more authentic and less self-congratulatory and also just like they're clearly done with so much more passion and effort and care? when I watch either of the Deadpool movies, I feel like I'm watching a bunch of executives jerking themselves off. when I watch the other two, I feel like I'm watching a passion project that the executives clearly didn't give a shit about and thus the creative team were actually allowed genuine creative freedom with not a lot of oversight. that's a little less true with She-Hulk (especially in terms of that glorious finale although even that feels more authentic and artist-driven than most things in either Deadpool movie. Kevin Feige's boring, sanitized ass does not have the range to do that finale) being a MCU property although Phase 4 was so fucking experimental and it was a joy to behold even if not everything hit but it's still true and more authentic for the most part. with Deadpool it feels like the only person who really really cared about it was Ryan and like maybe a few of the other actors who actually did do commendable work with what they were given but with the other two projects, it feels way more collaborative because every single person showed up and cared deeply about what they were making.

Sandberg movie. #like BOPATFEOOHQ feels artist driven the same way The Batman does and the TASM movies do. #not to derail this tag rant but the TASM movies are Marc Webb movies through and through. #yes they have Sony's grubby hands on them with the product placement and shit but they are inseparable from Marc's vision #they are what Marc cares about more than what the studio cares about. the thematic interests are all Marc Webb. #anyway point is: more art like BOPATFEOOHQ bc it actually cares and less shit like Deadpool that is just pointing and laughing. #Deadpool feels like it's laughing at the concept of superhero media and it's a horrible boring deconstruction of it bc it doesn't get it. #it feels bad to the psyche the same way those meme disney show record scratches do— #like 'my life is kinda crazy' but it's 'ironic' now so it's 'funny'. #'see it's funny bc they're self-aware!' okay but what are they doing by being self aware??? #I'm not saying every piece of art has to be some profound exploration of whatever but Deadpool feels bad to watch in a way the others don't #BOPATFEOOHQ is actually fucking commenting on something using its gags! #the fucking 'they call her... the crossbow killer gag' is actually thematically relevant!! women telling their own stories!! #a subversive joke actually playing into the themes of the project!! imagine that! care ajf effort put into saying something!! #anyway Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is phenomenal. #genuinely one of the greatest CBMs out there. also just a phenomenal time. even tho Parasite is a better movie overall #— BOPATFEOOHQ was my favorite movie of 2020. #some of the best action around with a great script with amazing pacing and phenomenal acting and a great score and soundtrack!! #literally nothing more to ask for. #one of my usual criteria for evaluating how good a piece of art is how much I'd add to it to help it do what it was trying to do. #like not cutting anything from it unless absolutely absolutely necessary. just adding like maybe 10-15 minutes to the runtime and— #helping maybe a few weaker elements shine more. with BOPATFEOOHQ the only change I'd make is to have more of the characters. #let us see more of Cassandra and Black Canary. more of their inner lives and backstories. #Christina Hodson tells us their stories with great efficiency and it's done really well but visually I'd just like to do more with them. #give them each maybe a 2-3 minute scene with what their daily routine is like. #maybe explore Canary's history with her mother more. see how it ties into the GCPD more effectively. #maybe actually see Cassandra's parents and how she deals with them daily instead of hearing about it from her hiding outside

#we dont have any good specialty art shops in Lawrence #we have a couple of places downtown that are kinda similar but they pretty much only have name brand stuff #nothing made locally #if it wasnt so expensive to start a business in Lawrence i might have a niche for handmade paints there #im trying to figure out what oil they used in their base to make it antimicrobial #cuz it smells really good lol #like my paints smell very strongly of cinnamon #im assuming clove oil since thats most common.....but idk if i can identify clove by smell #smells christmas-y tho #if i was more outgoing i mightve asked the owner some questions about it #my mom tried to talk me into getting the watercolor kit that had some little pieces of watercolor paper and a pencil and a brush #and i was like ''i have all that tho'' and she was like ''but then you could use them now.'' #''.....yea. i have all that WITH me.'' like. im not gonna travel without my favorite art supplies lol #i gave up suitcase space for my giant watercolor sketchbook just in case i wanted to paint #i have MOSTLY travel watercolor sets and brought all of them with me in my pencil bag #i specifically filled up all my watercolor brushes with water the night before we left and made sure i had my favorite mechanical pencil #(which btw if you have executive dysfunction and like to paint with watercolors i highly recommend the watercolor brushes you fill #with water. i paint way more than i used to cuz i dont have to fill a cup with water any time i wanna paint) #i have my regular sketchbook #i even brought my sudoku book and a couple pens in case i felt like playing sudoku #i dont travel without my bag of activities. i may not always do the activities i bring but i like to have options #at least its better than when i was a kid cuz i tried to bring activities AND like 5 stuffed animals #my suitcase was usually half stuffed animals #i also usually had a few shoved into my pillowcase with my blanky

to add onto that i feel like ppl forget there’s like artists n shit working on these games.. i’d love to highlight the devs too but it seems like at the end of the day devs of any medium of game aren’t seen as human unfortunately so that’d fall on deaf ears but like. it reminds me of what i was thinking a few days ago abt how whenever an artist doesn’t “do good” on art for a mobile game fans of them will claim they were just phoning it in just for that artist to have been like super hyped about the project or something.. like never stop critiquing the business model but the whole “not a real game” mindset is starting to rub me the wrong way
