is there any truth to those 911 "codes" people see circulating (like ordering a pizza)? Is there a good way to tip you guys off that we need help without saying for sake of an example, "my ex husband is here and drunk and dangerous"?

There is absolutely no truth at all whatsoever to the "pizza code" and definitely not established set of "this topping means this and that one means that" at all. Don't kill yourself memorizing them, that won't mean anything. There are no codes that 911 calltakers are trained on, other than our local 10-codes for the police (and those are not standardized, so knowing them in one jurisdiction won't help you in another).

The situation you described would be tricky to navigate, honestly, but let's see. If I get a 911 call, it's going to start with, "911, what is the address of the emergency."

If the caller says, "Yes, I'd like to have a pizza delivered to 111 Underhill DR." my first thought is going to be that they dialed a wrong number.

So now, I'm gonna confirm that thought. "I'm sorry, you've called 911. Did you intend to call a pizza place?" Or maybe—now that you've got me gamplanning this out—I'd say, "Do you have an emergency?" as the question there, instead.

At this point, anyone who doesn't have an emergency is going to give me their schpiel about how their phone called by mistake or that it was a butt dial or their kid grabbed their phone. Whatever happened. We get a lot of accidental dials.*

If you are not able to speak freely, you're not going to say that. You'll answer that question however you answer it, but whatever it is won't be an explanation of why you called by mistake, and it will almost certainly not be a direct answer to the question I asked either. Whatever you say here is gonna be weird.

(Don't start spouting wacky nonsense, as we do have actual literal crazy people who call and report their hallucinations on 911. So, what you say here should follow the thread of the question asked, but don't tell the calltaker you don't have an emergency or that you dialed by mistake.)

From there, I'm gonna start asking yes-or-no questions, to allow you to answer without whoever might be listing hear you say things other than that. "Is there someone there with you?" "Can you speak freely?" "Do they have a weapon?" Stuff like that. If there's a point where you have to stop talking, I am going to ask you to put the phone down, but not hang up the call, that way I can still hear the noise in the background. By this point, police are already on their way. And I am definitely going to stay on the line until they arrive. So whatever I hear in the background gets relayed to the responders in real time.

* Even for accidental dials, I will double down on getting confirmation by asking, "If you had an emergency, would you be able to tell me?" I do this now for every single person who says they accidental dialed or didn't call because one of the times I just happened to ask it and the caller immediately hung up. To this day, I don't know what was happening, but I do know we absolutely did our due diligence and sent police to go check.

As to the tall, curly-haired man, I suppose it was the one who was with me at the last Pop.

Brace yourselves, I'm about to provide way too much detail on literally one word of this entry.

A "Pop" was a popular classical music concert; specifically, part of a series held at St James's Hall. I suppose the word "Pop" might have been used by other places? But the concert series at St James's Hall was very well known and well established, so I think it's fair to assume that's what Lucy is referring to.

St James's Hall was located between Regent St and Piccadilly where the Dilly Hotel now stands. It opened in 1858 and was demolished in 1905.

The first two images are sketches of the hall when it opened in 1858; the final image is a photo from 1885. You'll notice that it's next door to the Aerated Bread Company; here's their menu.

Apparently the interior is in the style of the Alhambra, but it's a bit hard to tell.

Pops were chamber concerts, held on Monday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Tickets started at a shilling each (source, p139), which was affordable for anyone on a middle-class salary (it's about a week's coal bill for a poor family). I'd assume Lucy and Arthur paid more for better seats.

At the Pop reviewed by Werner's magazine in 1893, the programme was:

Schubert, String Quartet in A minor, op. 29

Brahms... I have no idea what the convention is when there are slurs in the titles of classical music? Let's call them Brahms' folk songs, op. 103

A less detailed review in the Athenaeum (here, p477) suggests that this was a reasonably typical programme.

I had assumed that a Pop would be all crowd-pleasers, given the name and pricing, but I asked a musician friend for his thoughts (since I'm not qualified to judge) and he says it's not; the programme above is highbrow and relatively abstruse, and it was performed by notable musicians.

I don't know how much this actually tells us about Lucy and Arthur's taste in music. But since we don't have much else to go on, I'm going to headcanon it as a genuine enthusiasm that they share.

Ok...I can see things getting really cute after this, like maybe one of you mention something about baking cookies with your future kids and the other one blushes. EEK!

I absolutely love the genius of Nie Huaisang during the final confrontation at the Guanyin Temple.

The man appears and disappears from the story entirely (there's no mention of his whereabouts for pages at a time), only to slightly sway the direction of the confrontation or battle whenever he is mentioned.

He wakes up exactly when Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng had spoken just enough to have the issue laid aside for now (p. 57), and then he simply vanishes from the pages if not for a mention or two, wailing in surprise to see Nie Mingjue's corpse there.

Then, when it looks like Wei Wuxian will succeed in sealing Nie Mingjue, Nie Huaisang appears miraculously near Su She and Jin Guanyao, only to be injured, despite otherwise consistently hiding behind Lan Xichen (p. 104).

Because of their status as half-siblings, the scent of his blood rouses Nie Mingjue and sets him back up against Jin Guanyao.

It is brilliant how he moves around while being effectively insignificant most of the time.

And his commentary! When rereading the story, he truly reads like a malignant jester.

After melodramatically reminding everyone how he is pitiful and scared of any pains and aches, he wails:

"Why am I so unlucky? Getting randomly captured by Su Minshan on the road... He started out just trying to make a break for it moments ago, too, but then turned around and stabbed me. If I was in his way, he could've just pushed me aside... Why use a weapon?" (p. 109).

'[U]nlucky', 'random', and 'why would he do that?' All things to push the blame to happenstance or others. He didn't do anything but be his usual incompetent self!

And, of course, with everyone on edge, as they had more than enough time to have seen Jin Guangyao manipulate expertly and be aware of how dangerous he is, his final act of tricking Lan Xichen into killing Jin Guangyao is especially striking (p. 111). Sorry, Lan Xichen.

In particular, because this is too direct of an action for Nie Huaisang! The most obvious of his ploys! The situation is instantly suspicious! Everyone knows (or at least highly suspects but is also confused by the idea that) Nie Huaisang did that on purpose!

So, yes, he acted rashly there, maybe seeing his last chance for his vision of revenge escape before his eyes and he seized the first opportunity there was.

This was impulsive! And it only worked because he was so jumpy and easy to look down on!

No, Nie Huaisang's entire plan wasn't openly revealed or even indeed confirmed (though kudos to Wei Wuxian for spelling out every step of Nie Huaisang's actions on the spot), but he let a glimpse out of his malice at that moment and the intent to manipulate the situation to have Jin Guangyao killed was called out:

"To think I'd fall like this, by your hand..." Jin Guangyao spate hatefully (p. 114).

But even though Wei Wuxian and Lan Xichen doubt Nie Huaisang's story, they can't really do anything. Or, rather, it's meaningless to even try. Because just like Nie Huaisang's lifelong reputation as a good-for-nothing is considered an indisputable fact, Jin Guangyao now has an irreversible taint on his character as a manipulative and vain liar that cultivators will be in no rush to see be disputed. Even Lan Xichen isn't entirely sure of what happened, as shaken as he is by it all.

It was also his final act, in a way, because from then on Nie Huaisang had a different reputation for those who were present. There is an unease there: his traces aren't entirely covered! There are now people out there who may be wary of him, could raise questions, or at least see him in a different light now. And genuinely, even with Jin Guangyao's name cursed into oblivion, it's a good thing for Nie Huaisang that those who could potentially call him out may not do so any time soon, if ever.

Lan Xichen goes into seclusion, Jiang Cheng is focused on Jin Ling and Jin Ling himself is already being discredited because of Jin Guangyao's reputation (we also don't know if either of them is suspicious of Nie Huaisang in the first place and most likely isn't), and that Wei Wuxian practically retreats from Jianghu politics with Lan Wangji.

Ah, it's brilliant. I love Nie Huaisang's arc so much, I'm just giddy about it all.

I'm hearing "burning briges." I think there's someone that was once very important to you that your cutting your of your life. Spirit is telling me that this had to happen, it was an inevitable change that was always going to be part of your journey. Excuse the rambling lol, I just felt called to tell you that, maybe you needed proof that it's all going to be ok. You need to do what makes you happy, not anybody else. Let me tell you something pile 3, you didn't do anything "wrong" here. Whatever this is that's plaguing your thought, it's not your fault. Whatever situation you left, you left for a good reason. It was no longer serving you and/or was actively hurting you.

I feel called to tell you a story from my own life. Recently, I lost a very close friend of mine. We suddenly grew apart and I was plagued with doubts, wondering if I had done something wrong, if it was my fault. It's been months since I left them and cut them out of my life, and now I realize it was them. They suddenly pulled away and made it so I felt guilty about it, made it seem like it was my fault. It wasn't, they were just being cruel, even though I don't think they intended to. But I needed that to happen, I needed to realize they were a toxic person in my life and to be free of them. Now I feel better then ever, and I feel bad for the past me, who thought it was all my fault. I felt so alone. I fell into a deep depression and wouldn't tell anyone what was going on until I had cut that person out. But I'm glad it went through it, because it made me better for it, it made life better for me.

And if, IF, for whatever reason, you think you did make a mistake, no if's and's or but's, then that's ok too. We are human. We make mistakes sometimes. It's ok. We can grow from that too.

I'm sorry you're going through whatever it is you're going through pile 3, but know that it's not your fault, and you didn't make a mistake. It's ok. You're growing, and that means change. It means growing pains. It means leaving things behind. You will get through this pile 3, even if it takes some time. You will become better from this. This isn't your fault.

Everything's going wrong, and I really feel like I'm about to lose it.

Firstly, we're stuck in a maisonette with rising damp and mould, and the freeholders are doing precisely NOTHING about it all.

This has caused major respiratory conditions for all three of us. The worst of the damp and mould is in my disabled son's bedroom - this is what it currently looks like in there

The wallpaper and plaster have fallen away, the wall itself is actually wet, I'm cleaning mould up every day. We've had to throw away toys, bedding, books, and clothes of his that have been destroyed by mould.

We can't move, because we own the flat and no one will buy it with this problem, and we can't fix it ourselves, because its a structural issue that is the responsibility of the freeholder, and they have done nothing but ignore our pleas for the last 2 and a half years.

Ok, ready for the rollercoaster that's making me lose it? Strap in.

Now, as my son is disabled, and we're a relatively low income family, we were able to apply to the family fund for a holiday, something we've not been able to afford to do for YEARS.

This Friday, we're due to fly out to the south of France for a week. The FF awarded us £500 towards the holiday, but we had to pay the rest out of our savings, costing us just about £1200, and depleting our savings to nothing. We figured it'd be worth it - the holiday park we're going to sounds utterly perfect for him, with lots of nature, wildlife, and secure facilities with easy access. Something we simply wouldn't have even considered without the FF's help. Yes, it was still expensive, but the memories would be utterly priceless.

A couple of week's ago my car's engine light came on. Honestly something I'd probably be ignoring right now normally, but my husband was due to take his driving test in it this week before we fly out, and we are pretty sure that you can't take it in a car with the engine light showing. We managed to get it seen, and it requires around £800 worth of repairs. I cannot function without a car - it's absolutely vital for transporting my son and keeping him safe.

As I mentioned before, we've all had respiratory problems linked to the mould. My poor son seems to have a permanent frog in his throat. I've been diagnosed with asthma following a cough that I've had now since last November. A few weeks ago, my husband developed a similar nasty cough. And last week that cough suddenly got worse. He was vomiting due to the cough, in pain from head to toe, shivering and shaking.

Yesterday it was so bad, we called NHS 111, and they were so worried, they sent out an ambulance.

He's been admitted to hospital with pneumonia caused by the damp and mould. He can't take his driving test (obviously) and we are most likely going to lose out on our holiday.

I'm self employed but been unable to work much due to illness, but I'm going to have to put that aside.

So, I'm begging you, please help out a struggling artist, mother to a disabled child, and wife to a terribly ill husband. If I can book in a few pet portraits, I'll be able to cover our mortgage this month, and hopefully recover some of our lost holiday money, as well as keep my car on the road.

Here are some examples of my work.

Mostly I work in coloured pencil on pastelmat, although occasionally I can also do drafting film (if the subject allows for it) Commissions are £140 for an A4 piece and that will include postage to anywhere in mainland UK - outside of the mainland, of course I'll have to charge extra for postage.

I appreciate these aren't cheap, but a lot of work goes into them. If you could please reblog to get this seen, I would appreciate it so so much.

anyways outside of gl1990 i think green lantern: circle of fire is 1000000% worth reading (honestly i only read the first issue, the only with alex & kyle, and the last issue and i got all the important stuff). also completely unbiased and totally no ulterior motivation of new titans #126 (where he just happens to have a rly sweet interaction with rose.....)

i hope this helps u at all <3 i honestly recommend reading all of green lantern 1990 (or well. starting at #48) because its mostly really fun and has a lot of good moments <3333 and if anyone has more kyle recommendations please feel more than welcome to drop them

So I have... a few OCs for Fallout (This isn't even all the Fallout characters I have, just some of the ones I write about the most). The one I probably focus on the most though is the first one, on the left. His name is William S. Moore (although we'll just be calling him Moore, since that's what he prefers to go by). I might make more posts for the other three (plus the ones who don't have full references yet) in the future! But for now... I wanna talk about my little guy...

William Shepard Moore, Sole Survivor of Vault 111, Sad Widowed Father of Several

(Pre-war)

Born the 9th of September of 2033, Moore's family originates from Ireland-- however, they quickly relocated to America to seek better opportunities for their only son, and so the family moves from Europe to Massachusetts. Moore always showed prowess more for history & literature than science, always being fascinated by world history, and more importantly, law. Being raised in a world with a constant fear of Communism, he sought to understand politics and the government that seemingly caused nothing but fear and panic in his family & friends. Despite how gifted he was, he was quite the trouble-maker, and his father believed that enlisting in the army would whip him into shape, just as it had done for him. Graduating at 18 in 2051, Moore decided to take his father's advice, and enlisted in the army.

His behavior was relatively clean while enlisted, and it wasn't until a war-time injury occurred two years later, with shards of grenade shrapnel made its way right near his right eye, that Moore found himself in dire trouble. While he lived and escaped the injury relatively unscathed vision-wise in the end, he was given a nasty facial scar, and the treatments and surgeries were plentiful and painful. Luckily for him, though, the nurse who took care of him most often was another soldier named Nora. When he was inevitably [honorably] discharged to rehabilitate from the injury, he promptly enrolled in college, deciding to study American Law. When he found out that Nora had enrolled in the same college as him, he jumped at the opportunity to try and befriend her, and throughout their long college years, they fell in love, and eventually got married after both got their masters in their respective fields.

Moore had a comfortable life as a lawyer; he was happy with Nora, with plenty of money to spare. Although the two of them believed they would likely never have the family they wanted due to Nora's chronic illnesses, it was discovered that Nora was pregnant with their first and only son-- a miracle baby, to say the least. Such a miracle inspired Moore to finally pursue something he had dreamed of for years, which was running for Mayor of Boston. He believed he could make the world better for his son, and he had already worked so hard on what he would do if he were to run, so he decided to run for office in 2076, just a year before the bombs fell. Although he had many supporters behind his back, his detractors were many; it had become exceptionally clear through media leaks that Moore had not been given the most mentally stable of minds, and many believed his PTSD made him entirely unfit for office; some using it as ammo to fire at his more left-leaning values. Moore was already exceptionally shy, but this treatment made him regress into his shell-- he forced upon himself a "perfect political persona," of sorts, completely repressing anything undesirable, and causing him to become more toxic in his own views of his masculinity. He would never get to see if this strategy worked, as the bombs fell before election day.

Moore's story has many themes; it is him finding who he is while trying to survive the wasteland, and just as importantly, trying to find the family that he had lost so many centuries ago. The Wasteland of the Commonwealth is a ravenous, unloving beast, but while it may be cruel, there are some hidden good-sides to its chaos.

The first few months out of the vault were a kind of hell that Moore cannot even remember. He actually has no recollection of the time he spent in Diamond City or Goodneighbor, much to the dismay of Hancock. No one (including Moore) knows how he survived so long by himself, given the intense dissociative episodes from the new trauma of losing his entire family, and the Commonwealth itself being a never-ending reminder of the battlefield. The only reason he found his footing was because he had managed to accidentally stumble into Goodneighbor; the kindness of the residents to take him in and nurse him back to health while he was in his absent, half-dead state is one he can't remember, but still appreciates. Hancock was the one who paid out of pocket for the stranger to receive treatment ("no one is dyin' in my town. Not if I can help it.").

He befriends Preston Garvey afterwards, and the small group begin rebuilding what they can as they try to help Moore find his son. Moore takes quite well to the role of a leader of the Minutemen; he didn't think he would, but it makes him feel a bit better knowing he has people to back him up. It takes him many, many months to begin tracking down leads for where the Institute and his son might be, and he makes a few unlikely friends along the way... mainly the Mayor that took care of him way back when.

Moore is bad at forgetting, and hates remembering. He only travels constantly because he feels the need to be away from things that remind him of a life he no longer has. Nothing hurts more than the loss of his wife. Nora was more than the world to him; she took care of him, and he dedicated his life to her in return. Sanctuary reminded him of her, the songs on the radio about love, the giant Hubflowers that bloomed her favorite color... He hated remembering her, because he hated that he could never have her, again. His strong, fiery, extroverted wife, with a passion for ridiculous clothes, a girl who always spoke her mind.

...It sounds a little familiar, huh?

He didn't really realize this with Hancock, at first. He just thought he enjoyed the company, enjoyed not being alone... but when he did realize, it was initially so painful that he sent John home, much to the despair of seemingly both of them. So many things about their relationship was deeply painful. He had so far buried the idea of being queer, the idea of being vulnerable around someone, the idea of being himself... that he had forgotten what it was like to be happy with his life.

It takes him a while to really unpack this. To realize how much he'd accidentally fucked over his friendship with a man who had gone out of his gosh-darned way to take care of him... Just like Nora did. It's a lot to deal with the realization that you don't like the person you made, but it's a start. He realizes how much he actually cares about the people around him, the society he's helping foster... and that if he doesn't tell them now, he may never be able to, tomorrow.

While he falls in love both literally with someone and with the community he swears to protect, he finds the Institute, and his son. The son who terrorizes everything he now loves. It's hard for Moore to bear; the baby his Nora was so, so excited to love, is now telling him to his face that he cared little about the lives of his own parents. And despite how much it pains him, he can't let go. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), the world had already decided for Shaun to go, and so Moore spent his time learning about the facility around him as he watched his only flesh and blood pass.

Taking up the role of the Director, Moore is uninterested in "destroying" the Institute; there is too much good being done here to slaughter so many innocent people. He essentially tells the boards, "we cannot keep torturing the people on the surface, and if you don't discontinue these unnecessary projects my son started, I will be more forceful," and with some... helpful suggestion from the Railroad and his now much-larger Minutemen army, he successfully turns the Institute into a place of proper medical study and aid for the surface. In return, he stages a false explosion on the surface; the people of the Commonwealth now truly believe the Institute is gone, and with the boogeyman dealt with, the Institute could operate in relative peace, with the silent safety-net of the Minutemen army (given they honored their side of the deal: no more synths, more research in cultivation and medical science).

Nowadays, Moore serves as a kind of Governor for the top-half of the Commonwealth, controlling most of the Greater Boston Area and above. He is romanced with Hancock (obviously), and spends most his time dealing with legal Government work, as well as trying to keep peace between his land and the land that the Gunners and Rust Devils claim. Although he's not perfect, he's learned what he's here for, and has found more peace and love within himself that he did not have before the war. He's also cybernetically-enhanced; thanks to an "accident" regarding laser rifles, his left eye was amputated and replaced with a prosthetic (formerly synth) eye, and he also has similar life-extension technology that Kellogg used to use. He tries to live a quieter life with his synth son Shaun and his partner John with the rest of his friends, but God knows that Plot Shenanigans love striking.
