Twenty Questions for Fic Writers 💫

i was tagged by @nv-md (ali pls why does tumblr never let me tag you what have you done) and then sort of indirectly by @fluxweeed! as always i loved reading your thoughts and i'm v grateful you thought of me. as always, this is just me talking shite for 20 answers:

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

12 revealed, but I do have my @aftgthenandnow fic currently hiding so 13 technically

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

99,518 (which my heart was immediately keen on saying it's "not that much" but all these words were written in the last year 365-ish days, which makes me very very proud)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

i'm still on my fandom whoring phase and loving it very much!!! i think it's mostly AFTG but I’ve dabbled in some Simon Snow and Check, Please! recently and have some more plans for those 🥰 honestly there is a RIDICULOUS amount of fandoms in my fic planning trello board, including: Call of Duty, The Raven Cycle, Red White and Royal Blue, BBC Merlin, and Our Flag Means Death. i love living in chaos!!!!

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

oh it's these guys: the benefits of a broken air conditioning unit and other summer lessons (aftg/andreil, 3k, E) geometric equilibrium (aftg/kandreil, 10k, M) kaleidoscope (aftg/fem!andreil, 5k, M) growing pains (omgcp/bittyparse, 50k, E) celly (aftg/gen, 800 words, T)

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I do! Or I try to, anyway. Why? Uhhh. Because I want to, really. I'm not one of those people who feels like they have to, especially because as a commenter I don't expect writers to ever reply. But I love chatting fandom stuff and fic — mine or otherwise, so I always treat comments as an opportunity to do so. Sometimes I think I have a super random, like... reply style, I guess you'd call it? But I'd rather engage a fellow fan in genuine conversation rather than say just "thank you," which obviously is still what I end up doing like 70% of the time.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

This is funny for me to think about because in former fandoms I was a bit of an Angst Guy lmao (mcd, unrequited love, cheating, miscommunication, you name it)... but I'm on a softer vibe now for sure. I think maybe a wreath of white lilies is my angstiest work but even that i wouldn't classify as angst? it's fucked up smut, if anything lmao

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Uhhhh, I guess growing pains? It's a very hopeful, very happy ending with a lot of closure for stuff happening both within the fic and before. So yeah! I think that one. Very romcom-y neat sort of happy ending!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

i have in the past but not anymore! i'm not good enough nor bad enough to get hate jkfgjhd

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

yeah, baby!!!! what kind...? uh. good question. i feel like i always end up writing porn with a ton of feelings — not just love/lust though! but i do love a Strong Emotion (hatred, grief, confusion, relief, obsession) to be the catalyst for fucking. I like it when characters are seriously into each other (again, not necessarily only in an attraction way), in a little insane way. it just makes things fun. so i guess... my smut is the Big Feelings kind of smut lol

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

oh i haven't... but i do have a bit of a wild one i've considered! not sure if i'd ever actually write it though, but it's planned out.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

in an earlier fandom existence, yes! it may even be around still, who knows? now... not that i know of?

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

i don't think i have! would love it though! i grew up bilingual so i have a lot of love for translation :') i'd actually love to try my hand at translating one day!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

i have started co-writing fics with a couple of people before, but not something super serious and either times it never got finished. buuuuut i am actually in the process of co-writing not one but two fics atm! @skeptiquewrites and i are working on a zimbits flavoured little something, and @whataboutmyfries and i are very nearly done with our kandreil get-together fic, which is really exciting.

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

hate this question actually LMAO i am a multishipper at heart. a good fic can convince me of ANYTHING. like my favourite ship when i stopped writing hp was two guys who weren't ever even alive at the same time so???? anything goes truly.

for the sake of nostalgia, it might still be remus/sirius, because they were my introduction to fandom and all its joys! but that fandom is kind of tainted these days >:(

hmmmm. probably zimbits actually? they invented true love, i think.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

hahaha so many!!! i have a catholic priest Neil fic that is a very fun idea but requires a ton of lore because it's so removed from canon... the kink is juicy but the laziness might be stronger. we shall see.

16. What are your writing strengths?

descriptions, baby!!!!! details!!! i want to say characterisation but i don't think that's always true... i just love thinking very deeply about the details of characterisation.. the little seemingly unimportant tidbits you can add in about a character that just tell you a ton about them without you having to spell it all out! i find that fun, even if it doesn't always work lol

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

dialogue... i hate it... i simply do not know how people talk... i don't know why they have to either LOL top ten most mortifying moments of my life was when a pal was beta reading a fic for me and said "hey there's no dialogue in this for the first like 5k at all... maybe we should do something about that" rip

i am also very bad at ensemble casts... while the weakness above is something i can't avoid, this one is a lot more avoidable but also something i am actively working on. i feel like my fics are very closed in on my MCs and their relationship but as a reader i love when the characters have meaningful interactions outside of that... so i'm trying to get better at that, even if it's really fucking hard. i'm lucky enough to have a couple of pals who are INCREDIBLE at this so i'm taking notes all the time.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

big fan!!!! i love all methods of doing this too! add it in and provide translation at the end, weave the translation into the text, make the character themselves translate it, etc. i think it's great! i think i've done it maybe a couple of times but should definitely do more...

19. First fandom you wrote for?

you already know what i'm gonna say... HP. i am of that specific generation and i'm just gonna have to live with that lol

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

hate this question hate it hate it hate itttttt do you mean favourite as in favourite final result, or favourite writing experience, or favourite prose, or favourite plot, or favourite characterisation, etc etc etc? i have a lot of love for growing pains, which i've already mentioned a couple times; and also for geometric equilibrium. for funsies, i'll say do not disturb the cats because i just love when an idea possesses me and i can't do anything else until i've written it LOL but yeah "favourite" is hard, sorry

Aw thanks! time travel plots are like...MY TROPE. IDK man I've been in love with those kind of stories since I was a wee lass reading teen titans fan fiction on forums. If I really get into a series (Like I have with AFTG) then at least 6 Time Travel plots end up jockeying for position in my brain.

I hope you understand how exceptionally difficult this question is. But alas, I will try my best.

Ten characters are a lot and I have no way of rating them, so I'm going to talk about my favorite 9 characters, then my favorite of all time.

10. Magnus Bane, from the Shadowhunters series and TV show. I love this man. SO MUCH. He is an immortal warlock with a soft spot for black hair and blue eyes. Those books were some of the first YA I ever read, and Magnus and Alec, his husband, we're the first queer relationship I became obsessed with.

9. Percy Jackson, my king. This man. God how I love this man. Percy was my first favorite character in any media. When I first read PJO, I aped through those books in a week, then the next series, then the next. Today, I've read all those books and own each physical copy. When the TV show comes out, I do NOT apologize for the person I will become.

8. Bryan Stark, from the DRAMA series by Paul Ruditiz. I have never seen someone online talk about these books, and it's a damn shame. Read the first two when I was in 6th grade, and since then I've reread the series more times than I can count. Bryan is just such an entertaining character. The author managed to make him gay without making that all his character is. Such an underrated book.

7. Kaz Brekker. Sigh. Anyone who knows me knows that I have a thing for traumatized men, and this boy fits the bill. He's just. I don't have the words. He is so smart, which automatically makes a person a great character for me, but he's also so mean, which makes me love him more. He cares so much about his love, but has no clue how to display that. Which is my type. I have issues. And of course Six of Crows is one of my all time favorite books.

6. Draco Malfoy. Okay, I know there's some major controversy with anything dealing with Harry Potter stuff, which I get, but that will not stop me from enjoying content about the characters. Now, it's not so much canon Draco that I enjoy as much as it is FANON Draco. His character got smugged horribly in the original material, and I love seeing people's interpretations of him as a character outside of what he was written as. I ship him with Harry, and the amount of fanfiction that I have consumed is ridiculous at this point.

5. Klaus Mikaelson, from the Originals. I watched Vampire Diaries, liked it, but my favorite character from that show was Klaus. There's just something about a man who's willing to rip out the hearts of hundreds of people for his family, for his child, that just hits right in my brain. Love this man with all my heart.

4. Andrew FUCKING Minyard, ladies and gentlemen. Everyone knows he was going to be up here somewhere. Many are likely shocked he's not at number one. A year ago, he would've been. When I read All for the Game, I really was not expecting so much to come out of it. I formed my entire Tumblr personality around it, read millions of words of fanfiction, and wrote MY first fanfiction for the series. I've daydreamed hours and hours of content that will never actually see the light of day, used it in school assignments. And the entire time, I loved one Andrew Minyard. Again, big thing for the traumatized boys, and my God does this poor thing take the cake. He's one of the most interesting, compelling, and agonizing characters I've seen in any fictional media.

3. Laurent De Vere, from the Captive Prince trilogy. Oooof, finally in the top three's. Debating between him and Andrew for this spot was so hard, but ultimately, I feel like the author fleshed Laurent's character out more. This man is so goddamn smart. And I would jump in front of a train for pretty petty bitchy smart sad characters. This series had the misfortune of being read a month before aftg, so it was sadly swept up in the storm that came after it. But now, looking back and remembering the experience of reading those books for the first time, I just keep thinking about how often I had to put my book down, or risk throwing it across the room, that's how insane those books are. I love this sad boy and all his trauma.

2. Bruce Wayne, or Batman. GOD this is hard. But I've been a Batman lover since I was a little girl. This man has some major issues, and a dependency on a fur suit and children decorated in circus colors. He has a weird queer-coded relationship with a killer clown. His character shifts so much that between one comic issue and the next I can go from wanting to strangle him to wanting to hug him tight and never let go. I don't think I could fix him, and I don't think there's much making him worse, but maybe I could get him into therapy???

1. Jason. Todd. The Red Hood. My baby, my child, the love of my life. Sigh. First place was never a question for me; even growing up with Batman, Jason was a more recent discovery and one I'm thankful for every day. This boy was sold to a mass murderer clown by his mother, beaten near death with a crowbar, and blown to bits. He was brought back, only to find out that his adopted dad not only didn't avenge him but changed absolutely nothing, putting another kid in the exact same spot he was in. Oh yeah, and being brought back required a trip into a nasty green pit that screwed up his head. And now, video games are making him look 40, comic writers KEEP killing him, no one can decide what his whole thing is supposed to be, and they gave him a FUCKING CROWBAR TO PATROL GOTHAM WITH. WHAT THE FUCK. So yeah, Jason needs some love.

And that's ten of my favorite characters in no particular order. As I'm finishing this, I'm thinking of like 20 other characters who could've gone on this list, but I'm happy with this for now.

Does anyone else have this... thing where they just can't let go of their term papers/essays/ whatever. My term paper is due tmrw but I've basically been finished for at least the last 2 days and only been doing minor tweaks (which, you know, good that I caught them but they wouldn't have influence on my grade) but I just CAN'T SEND IT to my prof. So I've been running myself ragged to find more minor mistakes and changing wording in the first sentence. I hate this.

Love how exam time is both the most stressful time of the semester (and the year tbh) and the time when I take good care of myself. On one hand, I'm stressing out every time I spent 30 minutes not reading my notes, but I also do skincare and sleep 7+ hours a night (because I want to look and feel my best during the exams). I contain fucking multitudes

Love when a prof tells me he had higher expectations for me and makes me feel like getting a 2.0 (Grades go from 1.0 (best) to 6 (worst)) is a bad grade... like, I'm happy that you think well of my abilities, but I didn't need to hear that shit - especially when he follows up with a "Well, your term paper will be better, I'm sure"

1. book you’ve reread the most times?

ok, this one is hard because I only started tracking rereads maybe last year. but I would say aftg and the first percy jackson series are either tied or very close to with around 5-6 reads each

10. do you have a guilty fav?

honestly, i'm pretty much past feeling "cringe" about things I enjoy. I might not go around telling people irl about aftg but I don't feel guilty at all for liking it.

closest to it i'd say i really enjoyed the first two acotar books but it went downhill from there, so i don't look back at it so foundly

14. do you ever mark/dog ear books you own?

no, i read 90% on kindle (books are somewhat expensive in brasil) and because of that I've got really comfortable highlighting and annotating on my physical copies, but I still use bookmarks while reading and sticky tabs on pages I might want to go back to!

Favourite bands: my first band was one direction and that too in the UAN era. But in my defense I was a baby and my parents aren't music listeners so I didn't know anything about anything. now I like fall out boy, panic!at the disco, arctic monkeys, kodaline, queen, the neighborhood, imagine dragons, bastille, foster the people, the 1975, noori, junoon. and I still like one direction 💁🏽‍♀️

Favourite solo artists: halsey, taylor swift, louis tomlinson, harry styles (yet to hear the rest of their solo music properly) hailee steinfeld, jaymes young, phoebe bridgers. These are the ones who I've heard like more than three songs of. I usually listen to a couple of songs by various artists. Haven't heard a lot new music for some time though. It's been a weird couple of years

Last movie: the Reputation Stadium Tour film tbh. Or I watched Flipped like 6 months ago.

Last show: Halfway through Julie and the Phantoms rn

When did I create this blog: in 2017 after much procrastination on account of not knowing how to do themes. But I've wanted to have a tumblr since I discovered jily as a ship.

What do I post: it's mostly reblogs with the occasional personal ramble. Fandoms that I cycle through. Harry potter, raven cycle, aftg. Some shitposts and aesthetic posts and motivation/positivity.

Last thing I googled: endocytosis animation. I'm helping my little sister study for a test.

Why I chose my URL: i was trying to be clever 🙃 not sure if it worked. I'm a bit on the fence about changing it.

Following: 4615. Sometimes I follow blogs because the theme is cute but then I see a post that's wayyy out of my interest and wonder why I follow that blog. Because..you guessed it, they changed the theme.

Followers: a few hundred I guess?

Average hours of sleep: 6-8. My sleep schedule is fucked but I compensate with naps.

Lucky number: no clue.

Instruments: like I said, mine isn't a musical family. So I can't play anything. I would like to play the violin. But I don't think I'd stick to it. So I probably just like the aesthetic of it.

What am I wearing: shirt, jeans, hoodie, thick coat, thick blanket and quilt. And let's not forget the socks🥶

Dream job: hm. I'd like something creative but with some structure.

Dream trip: something mountainy and a bit cold. somewhere I can go zip lining! I'd love to do than on an actual mountain.

Favourite food: my mum's aloo gobi with garlic yogurt. #desi (potatoes and cauliflower, literally but it's like spiced with stuff.) and plain red sauce pasta.

Nationality: pakistani

Favourite song: I don't have favorites just songs I have memories attached to. I sang Scarecrow by Alex&Sierra with my ex best friend a lot, cries for hours listening to After The Storm by Mumford and Sons once etc. Perfect Now by Louis Tomlinson is currently a comfort song.

Last book I read: this romcommy type YA book What I Like About You by Marisa Kanter. And I've been trying to read Blood and Honey by Shelby Mahurin.

Top 3 fictional universes I’d live in: idk if I wanna be in any. Harry Potter universe is probably the only one.

Neil is half-Fae, half-human and on the run from Riko and his men. (Also his father’s men) He comes across Andrew in his cave.

But upon waking up in a the rundown castle in the middle of nowhere, and no understanding of anything other than the people in it are extremely weird and hey– wasn’t that statue in another room before??– Neil finds himself in a predicament he’s never had to face before.

Neil didn’t mean to stay. And he most certainly didn’t mean to wake the dragon.

Musings on FMA

So, like, I understand the explanation for why the cool alchemists only have to clap to do transmutations: you still need a circle to run the energy through, and forming that circle with your body is a valid option.

But how come I've never seen anything in canon or fanon about making a circle with a finger and thumb? Even if it's limited in the amount of energy that can circulate, you could still do small transmutations (although Roy, Armstrong, and Kimblee's circles on their hands were only slightly larger, and still were put to impressive use).

Everything's the exact same, except Murderbot edits its logs to point out that Gurathin licks rocks.

I could hear them in the room and on the security feed, so I switched to just visual on the camera. Mensah had held up a hand for quiet. She said, “Rock-licker, what’s wrong?”

I said, “One of them is an augmented human, a systems engineer. He can make it launch. Check the data you got from our HubSystem. It’s Surveyor Dr. Gurathin, who licks rocks.”

so I've been playing a lot of Control lately. Finished the main story, a number of side quests, and both the DLC stories (and a number of their side quests).

I have yet to discover anyone who got caught with their pants literally down by the Hiss. I don't even recall seeing any Hiss agents in bathrooms in general, pantsed or not.

I find that improbable, to say the least.

Where's the mod that adds some poor schmuck floating and chanting above a toilet with his pants around his ankles?
