BBC Ghosts Coda - Christmas 2023 spoilers ahead
Alison knows she’s dying. It’s been like that for a while, but now it’s time. Call it a ‘sense of impending doom’ or whatever, though, it’s been bad news for months, or years, or a few hours. She can’t tell of much with any certainty except that she is dying.
And the Higham Suite is waiting for her. Pristine. Cosy. Home. Bone House; Higham House; Button House; now Horsley Hotel. It was still home. Albeit booked on a rolling fee.
She doesn’t intend on staying long, though.
She doesn’t tell anyone, but Mia quickly catches on when the letters started piling up, the concerned neighbours started calling, and her mother’s voice sounded slower over the phone, words pinched together like wet clay.
And she tracks her mum’s phone, obviously (she never learnt how to turn off ‘Find My’). Mia is grateful for that. Her mum never wanted to be worried about. Even if it was time for her to be cared for.
Alison held Mike’s hand for the last time nearly a decade back. Now Mia’s holding hers, together in that sacred room in that gorgeous, special house, made a home by the spirits that live on there. Mia doesn’t see the others around them, but her mum is talking to the air like she sometimes does and she knows she’s not insane. Just ill… dying.
Mia sobs. Alison squeezes her hand and turns her pillow-cuddled head to talk to her.
She talks until the sun sets and rises, until birds bother the morning air with song and their wings, until her clay words melt into a drowsy mould of sentiment, then slowly melt away.
Alison closes her eyes and Mia squeezes her hand.
When Alison looks around again, she doesn’t feel the digging, wretched pain in her rotten ribs and struggling heart. She doesn’t feel the throbbing headache that crowned her skull. She can sit up, breathe, fill a chest that isn’t really there. She’s more alive than the illness that tried to best her, even if she’s not a tangible spectre to the living.
And she sees her friends are there still waiting. Her ghosts. Her family. She can hold Kitty’s hands and feel Robin’s coat and grip the Captain’s swagger stick and pull on Pat’s tie and hold Humphrey’s head. She doesn’t touch Lady Button, a nod and a knowing smile suffice. She doesn’t allow Thomas to touch her, but the years have mellowed and jaded him, so courtesy thumbs up does the job.
Finally, she asks Julian to push over the cup of water on the table beside her body.
Mia is driven from her grief by the signal. She smiles, glances around the seemingly empty room, and tells them all she’ll be back at Christmas.

Kris Marshall (DI Humphrey Goodman), Sally Bretton (Martha Lloyd), Zahra Ahmadi (DS Esther Williams), Dylan Llewellyn (PC Kelby Hartford), Barbara Flynn (Anne Lloyd) and Felicity Montagu (Margo Martins) all return to Shipton Abbott alongside an exciting guest cast.

As the residents of Shipton Abbott gear up for Christmas, Humphrey and the team are baffled by a series of bizarre burglaries which aren’t quite what they seem. However, when the team make a breakthrough with an unexpected connection, it’s a bittersweet discovery that makes them reconsider the true meaning of Christmas. Back at the station, Kelby is forced to babysit a cheeky young shoplifter and Humphrey feels the pressure when CS Charlie Woods continues to question why their beloved local police station should remain open. Meanwhile, navigating the trials and tribulations of family life, Esther’s teenage daughter, Zoe (Melina Sinadinou), is less than impressed when she is made to work in Santa’s Grotto. And a chance encounter gives Martha food for thought about the future...

Beyond Paradise season two has an official release date – and it's soon.
The Death in Paradise spin-off will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer for a second instalment on March 22, with six new episodes dropping weekly on Fridays at 8pm.
In addition to the release date news, the BBC shared first-look photos of the returning cast, plus details of the guest stars appearing in season two.
Kris Marshall will reprise his role as DI Humphrey Goodman with actress Sally Bretton returning as his fiancee Martha Lloyd and Zahra Ahmadi as Goodman's sidekick DS Esther Williams. Derry Girls' Dylan Llewellyn is also back as PC Kelby Hartford alongside Barbara Flynn (Anne Lloyd) and Felicity Montagu (Margo Martins).
Special guest stars set to appear in Shipton Abbott include All Creatures Great and Small star Peter Davison, Holby City actor Paul Bradley and Abi Clarke of The Emily Atack Show fame.
Bradley and Clarke are pictured in their roles alongside fellow guest star Ted Lasso's Peter Landi, Death in Paradise alumni Anna Crilly and Kris Marshall in a train carriage in one new teaser photo.
"Shipton Abbott continues to keep DI Humphrey Goodman and his team busy, with a baffling new crime each episode," reads the official season two synopsis. "From a death on a steam train to a missing teacher, the team have their work cut out. Even more so with Police HQ's threat of the local station house closure hanging over them – the pressure is on to get results.
"Meanwhile, Humphrey and Martha's journey to find their own version of a family continues as they explore the possibility of fostering. Martha's mother Anne throws herself into the world of online dating, and a well-meant gesture from Esther's daughter Zoe threatens to uncover a long-held secret."
Supporting cast members Jade Harison (CS Charlie Woods), Melina Sinadinou (Zoe), Eva Feiler (Lucy), Isaac Vincent-Norgate (Ryan) and Amalia Vitale (Hannah) are back – with Selwyn the Duck also confirmed for a screen return.
Beyond Paradise season 2 airs March 22 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 8pm.

What to watch during the ongoing WGA strike
As the WGA strike keeps going, put the pressure where it belongs: on big companies, not the writers working for better conditions.
While we wait for new content (after an equitable agreement), here are some lesser-known movies, along with the (US) streaming services where they can be found. Feel free to add on with a title, short description, and where it can be found!
(Television show version here!)
Films listed under the cut!
Tumblr media
Netflix:
The Gray Man (2022) - Rated R. A CIA spook known only as Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling) is assigned to kill a former Sierra member... only to find himself at the center of a conspiracy. At the same time, he becomes the target of a sadistic ex-CIA mercenary (Chris Evans).
Genre: Action/thriller. There are likely to be more Gray Man films coming in the near future, along with a television show based on Chris Evans's chillingly villainous Lloyd Hansen.
Rocky (1976) - Rated PG. Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) is a washed-up boxer who works as a Mafia enforcer. He gets an unexpected chance at glory when boxer Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) wants to fight an unknown.
Genre: Drama/sports. If you don't know the story behind Rocky, it's almost as good as the movie itself!
The Imitation Game (2014) - Rated PG-13. The story of Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch), particularly his work in World War II to decode Enigma transmissions intercepted from the Axis powers.
Genre: Biographical drama. The Imitation Game is the story of Alan Turing's life, both triumphs and tragedies. It contains themes of hidden homosexuality, cruel and unusual punishment, and suicide.
Max:
Triple Frontier (2019) - Rated R. An ex-Delta Force soldier (Oscar Isaac) asks his prior teammates to come on one final mission, with the promise of an incredible payout.
Genre: Action/adventure. Triple Frontier is a typical action/adventure movie with some interesting effects and a cast (Isaac, Ben Affleck, Pedro Pascal, Charlie Hunnam, and Garrett Hedlund) that elevates it a little further.
Parasite (2019) - Rated R. The Kim family struggles to make ends meet until Ki-woo is referred to tutor a rich teenager. Through manipulation and daring, the entire Kim family ends up employed by the unknowing Park family.
Genre: Black comedy/thriller. Full of fascinating dynamics and an interesting look at divisions of wealth in South Korea, it's clear to see why Parasite gained such acclaim.
Casablanca (1942) - Rated PG. Casablanca, Morocco is a popular departure point for people fleeing the Nazis. Jaded nightclub owner Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) must decide whether to risk his life to help his ex (Ingrid Bergman) and her husband escape.
Genre: Romance/drama. Casablanca is considered by many to be the greatest movie ever made. If you haven't seen it, try it. Keep an eye out for dry humor and the way the director uses shadows to keep the black and white film interesting!
Ex Machina (2014) - Rated R. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) wins an office lottery to help the company's CEO (Oscar Isaac) test his new AI (Alicia Vikander).
Genre: Sci-fi/psychological thriller. With incredible effects, a labyrinthine plot, and uncomfortable questions about what makes us human, it's easy to see why Ex Machina is considered one of the best sci-fi films of the last decade.
Hulu:
The Last Action Hero (1993) - Rated PG-13. Film fan Danny (Austin O'Brien) goes to see the latest in his favorite franchise, he finds himself pulled into the movie, working alongside his hero Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzeneggar).
Genre: Fantasy/action/satire. Think of every action trope you associate with Arnold Schwarzeneggar, mix it with a vibe like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and add some self-aware humor, and you have The Last Action Hero. This is not a popular film among internet aggregators, but I enjoyed it!
Palm Springs (2020) - Rated R. Reluctant maid of honor Sarah (Cristin Milioti) is fascinated by a wedding guest (Andy Samberg) who seems to know more than he should. When she follows him from the wedding, she finds herself stuck with him in a time loop.
Genre: Sci-fi/rom-com. Though Palm Springs has some real COVID-19 quarantine vibes, the plot keeps it from feeling like a time capsule.
Whiplash (2014) - Rated R. Talented drummer Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) is identified for an elite jazz band by sadistic and manipulative conductor Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons).
Genre: Drama. Though Whiplash is not a horror movie, it is partially produced by Blumhouse Productions. That darkness really shines through in Fletcher's abusive behavior.
Role Models (2008) - Rated R. After a disastrous, drunken day at work, Danny (Paul Rudd) is assigned community service in a big brother program. He is assigned to awkward teenager Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and accompanies him during his favorite activity: LARPing.
Genre: Humor. Though Role Models can get a little close to cringe comedy, it's got enough genuine humor and heart to get away with it... and even be a little sweet.
Amazon Prime:
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) - Rated R. An author tells the story of Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), the owner of a once-grand hotel in the former country of Zubrowka, using several frame stories.
Genre: Drama. Wes Anderson's films have a very characteristic style. The Grand Budapest Hotel features stunning sets, a ton of cameos, and enough quirky humor to keep you entertained!
Hot Fuzz (2007) - Rated R. London police officer Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is reassigned to the small town of Sandford. He's frustrated by the small town at first, but a string of murders make him suspect something more is going on...
Genre: Action/comedy. Hot Fuzz is the second installment of the Cornetto Trilogy. It is a satirical look at the cop film genre - and thus has a lot of overdramatic violence - but it manages to stand on its own at the same time.
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) - Rated PG. Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are two teens more interested in their band than their studies. But if they don't pass their history final, Ted will be sent to military school. A mysterious stranger gives them a time machine, sending them off to write the best essay of all time!
Genre: Comedy/sci-fi. If you're used to Keanu Reeves as a broody hero, you're in for a shock and a treat to see him at his surfer/stoner/slacker best!
The Iron Giant (1999) - Rated PG. In 1957, 9-year-old Hogarth Hughes finds a 50-foot tall robot in the woods. He befriends the giant and the two work to evade the government, who suspect it is an attack on the United States.
Genre: Family/adventure. The Iron Giant is one of the most recognizable and emotional animated films of the 1990s - extra impressive considering it's a Warner Bros film that came out in the middle of the Disney Renaissance!
Disney+
The Boondock Saints (1999) - Rated R. Irish Catholic brothers Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy (Norman Reedus) living in 1990s Boston are sick of the crime on the streets. They decide to take matters into their own hands.
Genre: Crime/drama. The Boondock Saints has low scores on almost every film aggregator site, but is widely considered a cult classic. (Edit: warnings for insensitive portrayal of homosexuality and transgenderism.)
Feel free to reblog this and add your own lesser-known film suggestions! Support the WGA strike!
The Reluctant Dragon (1941) - Rated G. Robert Benchley wants to sell a movie idea to Walt Disney. As he searches for Walt, he wanders through the studio and sees how many of the magical movie effects are done.
Genre: Family/fantasy. I'll admit, this film was included on purpose. Not because it's amazing (it's interesting at best), but because of the story behind it. The Reluctant Dragon was released three weeks after the majority of the animators went on strike. (And most of the "workers" in the film are actually actors, another sore spot.) Disney fired all of the strikers before eventually agreeing to let them unionize and rehiring those who wished to return. (You can read more about the strike here.)

Jean Harlow: Do you have a garden? If so, what kind of plants do you have?
Humphrey Bogart: Do you travel a lot? Where have you been?
Myrna Loy: Do you like going to parties?
Spencer Tracy: What time do you wake up?
Jean: My garden is shared, and predates me (no, not that way.) The largest trees are over 40 years old; an Agonis Flexuosa and Pōhutukawa dominate the north and south sides of the house, respectively, both are in excess of 15 meters tall. In the backyard, an equally freakishly large variegated Pittosporum continues to challenge them for supremacy. A flowering eucalyptus grows on our nature strip, and together with the Agonis, and a teetering Virgilia, make seasonal threats against our overhead powerline. Closer to the ground, I have made attempts to introduce more Australian plants despite the reputation of our local soil being complete trash (spoiler: it is, our suburban block was quite literally built on a historic landfill.) The survivors, to date, include Callistemon, several varieties of Correa and Leptospermum (honorable mention to the coastal teatree* to which I have a not insignificant emotional attachment that will no doubt end in bitter disappointment), Kangaroo Paw (they’re alive but screaming for help), Banksia (alive but refusing to thrive), Eucalyptus ‘Baby Blue’ (he’s adopted), Thryptomene, Hardenbergia, and Acacia. Plants that have been here for longer than I’ve been alive include Fuschias, Pelargoniums, and an ocean self-seeding Cinerarias. My father planted a Diosma in the early 90’s that he has dotingly hedged ever since, it’s now as tall as I am, but I remember jumping over it with my sister when it, and we, were much, much smaller. Back then, we also had an enormous cherry plum tree growing on our eastern boundary – shading our driveway, and the neighbours’. Summer would arrive, the fruit would fall, and with every passing car a chorus of popping plums would foreshadow the looming familial task of scraping half-fermented plum slurry off the concrete. On the upside, our local blackbirds were very happy, and so were the Hydrangeas growing in the shade of the plum tree. And because you didn’t ask for an essay, I’ll make a list of the rest: Roses (17 at last count); Buddleja; Elderflower, Convulvulus ‘Silver Bush’; Salvia; Borage; Violets; Statice, Jasmine; Rosemary; Sunflowers; Gladioli; Petunia; Viola; Jade, Zygo Cactus, Catmint, Seaside Daisy, a dream of red Poppies (waiting to discover if the seeds are still viable), Grape Hyacinth, Foxglove, Snowdrops, and Bluebells (despite my best efforts at wholesale murder.) Humphrey: Not a lot. Internationally, I’ve been to Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and England - first in 2005 (there was a brief weekend in Paris, as well), and then again in 2015. In 2010 I visited New Mexico. It was my first time traveling alone, abroad, to meet and stay with people I’d met on the internet. Accordingly, I have a vivid recollection of my sister giving me instruction on how to brutally incapacitate someone as I was packing to leave for the city to catch my plane. While my friend will tell you she still has the bruise, I can at least attest that she wasn’t trying to take me to a second location when I gave it to her… affectionately – but you know this story already. Locally, I’ve been to South Australia, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory… but in the grand scheme, I’ve seen very little of Australia. Living where I do, in a little damp corner of Victoria, the rest of the country intimidates me like the promise of third-degree burns. Myrna: Categorically get away from me if people are coming that I don’t know. I can enjoy myself, or I can make small talk with strangers… I can’t do both. Smaller scale, close friends/family is fine… but anything too peopled and I’m liable to be person-not-appearing-at-this-soiree. Spencer: Any random-ass time between 1 and 4am, and ostensibly for no reason.
*the coastal tea tree's final form. Mine is still only 8 inches tall.

Ghosts WOF AU? Yeah
Tumblr media
More under here if you're interested
Robin- Futureseer Nightwing. Says he went to the same school as Darkstalker. Very small for his age. Claims to be an animus, no one believes him.
Humphrey- Silkwing. After an unfortunate incident with an animus touched sword his head and body are separated but still alive. Is good friends with Stonemover
Mary- Flamescale Skywing. Survived the traditional throw-flamescale-babies-off-a-cliff ritual and has been wandering ever since. Dreams of one day starting a fennel farm.
Kitty- Silkwing/Rainwing. Always wearing the flashiest scale colours she can think of. Has a pet sloth named Florence. Makes everyone participate in sun-time, even though only she and Julian really need it.
Thomas- Royal Seawing/Nightwing. Acts like he's next in line even though he was booted out of the Sea Kingdom by Francis ages ago. Never fully dims his bioluminescent scales so it's easy to find him when he's wallowing in a lake
Fanny- Icewing. Technically in line for the Icewing throne but as been missing since her mate tried to toss her out the palace window. Will complain about the 'common folk' to anyone who listens.
Captain- Leafwing/Sandwing. Poisonwing who still has a dislike for Hivewings. Knows about all the bugs on both continents but has a soft spot for butterflies.
Pat- Mudwing. Bigwings with no siblings so he adopted these guys as his sibs. Was a teacher at Jade Mountain before an unfortunate event with his mate and best friend.
Julian- Hivewing/Rainwing. Married into Hivewing royalty. Spends most of his time camouflaged into dark corners to pick up blackmail. Knows the dirt on every important person on both continents and will tell you, for a price ;) (find him at the Scorpion Den)

Thoughts on King Henry the Sixth Part II Act IV
Okay so it’s been a while. I got addicted to Dimension 20 and forgot how to read. But it’s the first of March, almost the Ides, so I’m back on my Shakespeare kick.
So Act IV opens with a sea battle. It happens almost entirely just off-screen, if only there was a camera panning left or right, you could see the battle, but alas this is a stage. Where we are introduced to… The Captain. No not the guy from How I Met Your Mother, though picturing him as Kyle MacLachlan is fun. He also has this wonderful line:
“The gaudy, blabbing, and remorseful day
Is crept into the bosom of the sea;
And now the loud-howling wolves arouse the jades
That drag the tragic melancholy night”
Which has left all of tumblr poetry shook, scared, and panicking. He’s coming for your gig.
There’s a new(?) character called Walter Whitmore, I kept reading Walter White at first. I ultimately do not care for him.
This whole scene can be summarized really easily: Everyone wants to execute the Duke of Suffolk and the Duke of Suffolk responds “Noooooo.” And then they actually fucking kill him. Legitemately so suprised.
The best line though, because it will be the perfect band name: “And wedded be you to the hags of hell,” So… teenagers everywhere, feel free to use something from there for your garage band.
Also at some point Julius Caesar is referenced, and that just feels like Shakespeare foreshadowing his career.
The next scene introduces a ton of characters including: George Bevis (no Butthead), John Holland, Jack Cade (his name just feels villanous), and Dick (Willy Shakespeare I see what you did there). I thought Smith and Dick were like throwing shade towards Jack Cade as he talks. He would say a line, and then the two would turn towards the camera and say some snarky one liner like “A must needs; for beggary is valiant.” But I think, based on later developments, they were actually hyping him up to the audience.
Later on, while arguing, someone yells out “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.” And it feels so nice to know that Shakespeare is a big fan of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
A clerk gets introduced, it’s established that he knows how to write his name, and immediately is ordered to be executed. I think Jack Cade might be an anti-intellectual.
Despite that, he at one point pulls out an epic moment of pownage. This one guy, Sir Humphrey Stafford, wanders in. He seems to hate Cade because Cade is claiming to be heir to the throne despite being a plasterer. And when Humphrey points that out, Cade responds to “And Adam was a gardener.” Sometimes a good biblical reference is all you need.
What follows is basically a montage. Scene after scene, almost all are sparse in lines and stage directions. In one scene both Stafford’s (there were two!?) die, but in the stage directions introducing the scene. Jace Cade casually tells Dick “You shalt have a license to kill.” Thus revealing that he is James Bond to the audience.
The Queen wanders in cradling the Duke of Suffolk heads and the King, in his only scene, notices how the Queen is mourning Suffolk more than she will ever morun him. She denies it, I don’t believe her. Also a Messanger says “They call false caterpillars.” I have no idea what it means, but it felt notable.
This random guy Lord Scales appears and says he will send Matthew Gough, Who dies two scene later without saying a line.
In another scene, I hope it was meant to be comedic because I found it hilarious, Jack Cade claims that he should only be called Lord Mortimer, and immediately kills one of his own soilder’s when they run in calling him Jack Cade.
Finally the Duke of Buckingham comes in, with this guy Clifford. Together they are the ambassador to the King. They offer a pardon if the rebels agree to leave. What follows is this fickleness of the masses, where they will cheer for whoever just spoke, even if it immediately contradicts what they just cheered for. Cade berates them, but Clifford seems to win out by getting the masses to part, with many abandoning Cade. Leading to him fleeing.
The King receives a message from the Duke of York, claiming that the Duke of Somerset is a traitor. It would be a dramatic moment… if it wasn’t read right in front of the Duke of Somerset. Maybe take a quick peak around the room before you speak Mr. Messenger.
The last scene. I kid you not. Is a random character named Alexander Iden killing Jack Cade. This guy, introduced (I think), in this Act, literally leads a massive rebellion that could be its own story, and is killed by a character introduced in this very scene. All because Cade hid on this guy's land. And then, like an idiot, Cade reveals his identity when he was stabbed. Instead of denying this guy the reward for his head. Because Cade is an idiot. The anti-intellectual little fuck.
