I’ve been rewatching the Maze Runner movies with my brothers because the youngest one has never seen them and… I didn’t even realise they’d Ginny Weasleyed Theresa. As in, she’s literally just a pretty girl with no personality in the movie despite being a strong fire cracker character in the books.

Hi! I keep seeing posts about James Somerton on the dash but I've never heard of him before. Are you ale to summarise the issues surrounding him (only if you have the time and headspace to do so) or point to a post that does? Thank you!
Basically, James Somerton was known for his video essays about various queer subjects, and it came out that he'd plagiarised basically all of them in a really in-depth video from HBomberGuy.
Somerton subsequently disabled his Patreon, attempted to hide for a bit, attempted to come back, disabled it again and hid again, and has recently published yet another video saying he's sorry but that he had to plagiarise dozens of queer creators - many of them multiply marginalised, many of them women and QPOC - because of a childhood head injury.
Somerton is also a raging misogynist and the few things he didn't plagiarise were rants about how women are the cause of homophobia and everything bad, and antitransmasculine rants implying that nonbinary and trans male creators are just women (and that therefore they're the cause of homophobia and everything bad).
youtube
I really recommend just watching Brewis' video on the subject - it's obviously very long, but it's super in-depth and really gets into the whys and wherefores of plagiarism and its harms, it's funny, it's well-made, and it really cuts into the particularities of how Somerton plagiarised, his strategies, et cetera.
Brewis in the meantime has done a lot of work to remunerate the people Somerton has plagiarised, assisting in collating lists of victims and plagiarised works, giving ad revenue from this video to those people, and so forth.

Researchers measure size-luminosity relation of galaxies less than a billion years after Big Bang An international team of researchers including the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) has studied the relation between galaxy size and luminosity of some of the earliest galaxies in the universe taken by the brand-new James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), less than a billion years after the Big Bang, reports a new study in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The result is part of the Grim Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS) Early-Release Science Program, led by University of California, Los Angeles, Professor Tommaso Treu. It is aimed at studying the early universe when the first stars/galaxies ignited, which ionized the neutral gas in the universe at the time and allowed light to shine through. This is called the epoch of reionization. However, details of reionization have remained unknown because telescopes until today have not been capable of observing galaxies in this period of the universe's history in detail. Finding out more about the epoch of reionization would help researchers understand how stars and galaxies have evolved to create today's universe as we see it. One study, led by Kavli IPMU JSPS Fellow Lilan Yang, and including Project Researcher Xuheng Ding, used multiband NIRCAM imaging data from the GLASS-JWST program to measure galaxy size and luminosity to figure out the morphology and the size-luminosity relation from rest-frame optical to UV. "It's the first time that we can study the galaxy's properties in rest-frame optical at redshift larger than 7 with JWST, and the size-luminosity is important for determining the shape of luminosity function which indicates the primary sources responsible for the cosmic reionization, i.e., numerous faint galaxies or relatively less bright galaxies. "The original wavelength of light will shift to longer wavelength when it travels from the early universe to us. Thus, the rest-frame wavelength is used to clarify their intrinsic wavelength, rather than observed wavelength. Previously, with Hubble Space Telescope, we know the properties of galaxies only in rest-frame UV band. Now, with JWST, we can measure longer wavelength than UV," said first author Yang. The researchers found the first rest-frame optical size-luminosity relation of galaxies at redshift larger than 7, or roughly 800 million years after the Big Bang, allowing them to study the size as function of wavelength. They found the median size at the reference luminosity is roughly 450–600 parsecs and decreased slightly from rest-frame optical to UV. But was this expected? "The answer is we don't know what's to expect. Previous simulation studies give a range of predictions," said Yang. The team also found the slope of the size–luminosity relationship was somewhat steeper in the shortest wavelength band when allowing the slope to vary. "That would suggest higher surface brightness density at shorter wavelength, hence less observational incompleteness correction when estimating luminosity function, but the result is not conclusive. We don't want to over-interpret here," said Yang. The team's paper was published on October 18, 2022, in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. TOP IMAGE...Two exceptionally bright galaxies were captured in GLASS-JWST program. These galaxies existed approximately 450 and 350 million years after the Big Bang (with a redshift of approximately 10.5 and 12.5, respectively), and sizes are roughly 500 parsecs and 170 parsecs, respectively. Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, Tommaso Treu (UCLA) LOWER IMAGE....Size–luminosity relationships of galaxies observed in five wavelength bands with fixed slope owing to limited data. The black solid and dashed–dotted lines in the F150W panel show the relation derived from HST data by Shibuya et al. (2015; z ∼ 8) and Huang et al. (2013; z ∼ 5) at a similar rest-frame wavelength, respectively. Credit: Yang et al.

Waar?   Tentoonstelling Faithful and Fearless – Portraits of Dogs in de Walllace Collection, Londen
Wanneer?   8 augustus 2023
Een fraai voorbeeld is Laying down the Law or Trial by Jury.

(Disclaimer: despite the start, this isn’t actually a post about OFMD, but about historical fiction media vs history, and interacting with historical “characters” vs. historical figures accordingly).
I think I went in with the fundamental flaw of expecting a little bit more from Our Flag Means Death owing to the utter hype on my dash.  I liked the central relationship between Blackbeard and Stede, but I lost patience with a lot (most) of the side characters fairly early on (especially since the show paid so much attention to the trio from Stede’s crew with plotlines that sort of abruptly dropped/went nowhere, which I felt greatly detracted from his story/character arc), and I did feel a bit like they started to overshadow the central plot/conflict/arc between the two main characters.  I assume the show was filmed on a budget (because it shows, especially with the water animation/CGI), but that didn’t really bother me overmuch, I was just a bit surprised initially.  The point of this post though is I’m getting a laugh from the surge of people being up in arms/extremely upset about the fact the show used real historical characters as a base instead of just making up some entirely fictional pirates, and people being up in arms suddenly about the “fandomification of real historical people”.  I’ve seen this phrase (and if not the exact phrase, which I have seen from multiple people, then certainly the same sentiment) on multiple posts in different fandoms arising from historical fiction media (Our Flag Means Death, The Tudors, The Terror, Wolf Hall, The Spanish Princess, Hamilton, Les Miserables, The White Princess/Queen, Reign, Magnificent Century, Spartacus, The Borgias, Domina, Bridgerton, et al), always by people who, when I end up browsing their blogs, embrace the “rules for thee, not for me” mindset--that is, they whinge about people doing it when it annoys them but in the same breath they’ll go “but it’s okay in XYZ circumstance/fandom that I like/agree with.”
As an actual historian I definitely like... get it.  Sometimes I go into the tags and I just want good historical posts about the historical figure, not the media portrayal of that character (and I’ve whinged about it before myself--I distinctly remember a much younger Chey complaining about too much Benedict Cumberbatch (sp?) in the Richard III tag).  There are also definitely people who take it too far and genuinely think the fictional portrayal of a historical figure is in and of itself the historical figure in question, which isn’t the case at all, and get very creepy, obsessive, etc about it, but also... all historical fiction media is, in a sense, fanfiction--or rather, since I don’t think labelling historical media as “fanfiction” is correct for a variety of reasons that someone else has already explained better than I could, at least shares elements of fanfiction, even if the two aren’t quite the same thing, and I think it’s important to remember that and not bite our thumb/thumb our noses at people who get interested in these historical-figures-as-fictional-characters as a result.
People need to understand, fundamentally, that the portrayal of a character in a piece of historical fiction media is never going to be (wholly) accurate to the historical figure themselves, and therefore you must have enough maturity to not conflate the two.  Love the semi-fictional character (because ultimately that is what they are in a way: a fictional character inspired by a real life historical figure) and be interested in the real historical figure, but do not conflate the two.  The Henry VIII of The Tudors fame is not the reality of the actual Henry VIII.  James Fitzjames in The Terror is not actually the James Fitzjames who really lived and died in the arctic.  Blackbeard from OFMD is not the Edward Teach of reality.  Etc.  You need to have the maturity to do this and interact respectfully with the historical figure in the course of your research and not let your modern notions colour and ultimately supersede your interpretation of the historic past to the point where you’re substituting their reality with your own.
Likewise, don’t be a condescending, gatekeeping snob and immediately dismiss people who like the fictional media portrayal of a historical character, and don’t immediately assume, from atop your cloud/pedestal/whatever high place you’ve put yourself, that just because people are “fandomifying/blorbifying/woobifying” (henceforth to be referred to as “verbifying”) a fictional character means they cannot draw the line or acknowledge the difference between the historical fiction media portrayal and the person who genuinely used to live and breathe.  The funny thing is that a lot of the people who gatekeep like this are themselves the ones incapable of distinguishing between the real and fictional historical figure; that is, they automatically assume that someone verbifying the fictional portrayal of the character automatically means the person must be verbifying the historical figure as well.  Then they try to justifying what is ultimately gatekeeping by trying to list a bunch of exceptions, etc.  A lot of these people also generally end up falling into the pit of “if it’s not wholly accurate in every way it’s not worth watching, just make it about made up characters if you’re not going to be Accurate to the Letter” (and then being hypocritical by making exceptions for media/people they like) and expressing those sentiments even if they don’t mean to, but that is another can of worms that I’m not going to get into in this post for fear of derailing the argument.  I’m also not ashamed to admit that for a brief period of time I also carried beliefs like that, because I was young and dumb (late teens, very early twenties).  There’s also nothing inherently wrong with making a show only loosely based off of history and using historical names.  Yes, they could have just “made up some fictional characters,” but they don’t have to, and as long as the showrunners/novel writers don’t go around saying “my piece of media is so accurate, everyone, complete historical accuracy” (was that a small dig at a certain Tudor novel writer?  Perhaps), then there is nothing inherently wrong with that--people have been doing it since the dawn of fiction and theatre.  The onus is not on a piece of media to think critically for you, or do all the thinking for you in general.  That’s how we get today’s incredibly preachy (mostly American) media, which thinks its audience needs to be spoonfed everything and cannot think for itself because people keep showing that they’re terrible at engaging critically with media.  You as the consumer have the responsibility to think maturely and critically.  The main fault in OMFD isn’t the fact that Blackbeard and Stede are only “loosely” based around their historical counterparts--there’s nothing wrong with that, and (to be controversial) it’s also not inherently disrespectful.  The fault comes from people who then take these fictional interpretations, don’t think critically about it, and assume the real historical figures must have been the same, or the “no fun ever” stick-in-the-mud types who think (or imply they think through their words and engagements) that only totally accurate historical media is worth producing--or, as I see frequently, the sort of person who thinks a loose interpretation of history is all right for the media pieces they like (eg. Hamilton, to list an example I have seen in about twenty different OFMD-critical posts), but not for the ones they don’t like (eg. Our Flag Means Death), and then try to justify their reasoning.
Interacting meaningfully/critically with historical media and the historical figures it’s based off of requires an element of mental maturity and the ability to critically think.  You must be able to distinguish that a piece of historical media (in any form) based off of a historical event/historical person is not and does not necessarily represent the reality of that historical period or the historical figures themselves.  No matter how much (or how little) attention is paid to detail, there will always be elements of fiction/dramatization (and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that), and you need to understand that a fictional character is not their fictional counterpart.  Do not conflate the two.  Verbify your historical fiction counterpart all you want, but be careful when approaching the actual history, or your preconceived notions and biases will colour everything and potentially perpetuate harmful stereotypes about the historical figure in question (I see a lot of this with Tudor-era fictional portrayals vs. their historical counterparts and it hurts).  On the other hand, don’t automatically assume that because someone verbifies a fictional portrayal of a historical figure, they must do the same to the actual historical figure.  I’ve also seen some bizarre takes of people criticizing a piece of historical fiction media for essentially being inaccurate or unfaithful to the historical figures/perpetrating inaccurate perceptions among people who watch it and then turning around and saying that that’s okay for other pieces of historical media for contrived reasons, so don’t do that either, please.
In the interest of not turning this into my second postgrad thesis I will leave it with this: that historical media is important.  Without historical media (television shows, movies, historical fiction novels, comics, video games, the list goes on) many people would not be exposed to these eras of history, or the historical figures themselves.  They would not develop an interest, and without people being interested, no other pieces of historical media would be made.  It’s critical.  I have multiple degrees in historical and classics, part of what fuelled my love of all things history from a young age was reading historical novels.  Then, as I got older, more television shows started being made (because people were interested), which fuelled my existing love or ignited new loves or made me remember old loves.  Historical media based off of history is crucial and allows history to reach audiences it might not have otherwise, and I will forever die on this hill and defend people getting into things via a piece of historical media, but also i) please do remember that historical media is ultimately a work of reality-inspired-fiction (even if loosely inspired) and tailor your interactions with the real history accordingly; ii) don’t condescend towards people who developed an interest in the actual history via a piece of historical media (and remember it’s highly likely that that was your introduction to some form of history, too).

Race Report.
The turnout for the race wasn't stellar in numbers, but definitely in quality. The best in city were present and that was all that mattered. Quality over quantity is always good. 11 racers all told with some new faces. The enthusiasm and nervous energy for the race was present and it being a straight dash to Alexandra Palace and back again, due north/south meant that it would be a quick one. All estimates seemed to think it would be a 40 minute time for the winner, that was obliterated with Gabberz coming in at 32:54, which was extra special. This came as no surprise because he has dominated for most of the year in tandem with another. Meeting JHood who was responsible for the images was another high note. The inaugral Alleycat Super Series Dassh4Cassh race was a success and was enjoyed by all. Roll on the next one.

Race Report.
This was the first multi checkpoint race in the series which celebrated the birthday of Chuck D who is the creator of Throwaway designs. He has contributed so much to racing et al over the years that it would be remiss not to dedicate this race to him. Hence all of the checkpoints were a nod to him. The race itself couldn't have been any closer between the two dominant racers over the last year, namely Gabberz and VgnKndrck. Both have dominated most races over the past year and the challenge for the rest is to try and break the hegemony that these two have created. A nod to Josh who has 2 2nd places and a 5th in his last 3 starts and to Gra who has 2 3rd's and 4th place in his last 3 races. Nods to all participants in the harsh weather which measured -3 degrees apparently. Another quality turnout with passable numbers. Nods to Timekeeper Tiger and design guru Lippo.

Race Report.
The turnout for ASS3 was good. Quantity coupled with quality and all told there were 21 racing. The batch of 24 spoke cards all sold which contributed towards the bench fund started by Chico Bandito for lost brother Robski. £160 was raised to go towards the fund. Much appreciated to all. There were some new faces again this time around. Some very fast boys from Cafeteros showed up on their road bikes which added to the excitement and some of the absent racers from the first 2 ASS events raced in this one which bolstered the numbers. there was more anticipation for this one than the other 2 which was understandable as momentum had been gathered. The kick off was 830pm and we all scrambled for the bikes as soon as Tiger called the start. VGnKndrck had chain trouble which hampered his progress for a win and Darien, a very fast lad also had chain trouble, Valentina who came 3rd in the Great Alleycat last year also raced even though she was feeling under the weather. We hammered it towards Blackfriars bridge heading to Crystal Palace at the base of the Antenna where Chico was holding checkpoint for the return and finish. The leaders hit blistering pace which was frightful on the busy roads of South London. Once again Gabberz dominated and came in first with an insane time of sub 40 minutes, CAB also hit a very fast time with Cafeteros Sanchez homing in on them with a great 3rd place. Rspct to Overkill who came in 4th to go with a win he attained the week before in a non ASS event which runs in tandem with the 3rd he gained at ASS1, great results for him. Gra hit 5th as he always does well. VgnKndrck would have undoubtedly done better if it wasn't for his chain issue's, but nevertheless came in 6th. Rspct to all participant's. Because it was Friday the 13th it was stipulated that if any racers turned up in a Hockey Mask in mimicry of Jason Voorhees from the film that they would gain 4 bonus points for going to the effort and also to carry the mask while racing. 5 did. Gabberz, VgnKndrck, Ronin, Overkill and Joachim. A great bit of fun. A great event and turnout. Roll on ASS4 slated for February the 24th. The first 3 races have been comparitively easy with reveals on destination et al. Onwards the series will become a touch more difficult.

Race Report
The Illuminaticat had a good turnout with 15 racers. The weather was quite warm if not sunny and the location on Dalston Lane outside the premises of About the Bike shop was sound. Across the road from The 3 Compasses pub which fit nicely with the theme of the race. Thanks to Dan and Stu from ATB for letting us start the race outside the shop. The race was attended by consistent participants with a few new faces. The start was quite muted as the participants got their bearings via navigation, but that didn't last long and pretty soon they were off. Altogether it wasn't such a long one, perhaps 23km which the winner achieved in about 45 minutes, as I predicted pre race. Some of the racer's also experienced some snags such as the Inner Temple being closed off on the Fleet St. entrance and therefore had to be accessed by the Temple lane entrance. This caused quite a stir during the post race discusssion as certain racer's didn't manage to get to the Inner Temple but still captured the church tower which which was allowed although still a technicality according to other's. Provision's were made to appease the two who had managed to get to the church proper, namely Gabberz and VgnKndrck. Bonus point's were allocated. Error's were made by some and lesson's were learnt by other's. Gabberz earned a few injuries by adorning the bonnet of a cab on the Strand and yet managed to win, rspct. Jordan who witnessed the event managed to roll in at fourth on his Omnium Cargo. The first 3 rolled in within 15 seconds of each other and 5 plus minutes ahead of the rest of the field. A great race apparently and a Historical education for most relating to the Freemasonic history of London. Roll on to the next one. To conclude it was great catching up with old and new faces as a good crowd of Non Racer's and Racer's attended the event.

Race Report
The turnout was again quite impressive given the rather cold evening, personally I didn't think it would be as good as it turned out to be. There were some regular racers not present either which bodes really well for summer events. There were 21 at the start. The format was a checkpoint race which had been compiled by Filippo. The timekeeper was Tiger.
Altogether there were 7 checkpoints, 3 of which were manned by Chico Bandito/Ronin, James and Stu and Sandro, on 2 of the checkpoints a piece of paper was handed to the racer with an additional checkpoint pointing to Brixton prison. The race had a good flow in the a loop and the most logical start was to head for Emerald Court from Leather Lane which was less than 5 minutes away and then onto 5 Newman Passage and then down to Pickering Place on St James' st and so on. At the finish Joe P came in first followed by incompetent Jo and the Pip with Overkill, Gabberz and VgnKndrck in tow but that wasn't the end of it by far. As it turns out the first 4 racers who came in; certainly had good speed, but missed out with technicalities. Namely, on the manifest it stated Emerald Court and 2 of the first 3 had Emerald Street. Also stated on the Manifest, which was almost the size of a large postage stamp had number 5 Newman Passage on it rather than just Newman Passage which confounded the first 4 racers, therefore it transpired that Gabberz and Joseph who rode in at 5th and 6th were the only racers in the top 6 who had the technical data from the manifest done correctly. So, rather than disqualifying the first 4 I opted for a leapfrogging system instead. The same rules applied to all the others who came in thereafter. In the end the right result came through due to the technical data. Sympathies to JoeP, IncompetentJo, Pip and Overkill though as they had good speed but lost out on technicalities. In the end the results stood at:
Top 10/21Racers:
1. Gabberz 120£
2. VgnKndrck 70£
3. Benji 40£
4. Levi 25£
5. IncompetentJo Hoody
6. Spartak T
7. Overkill
8. Jack
9. Chris

The return times are representative of speed within the race but the placings garnered reflect the technicsl data which is paramount as per the manifest. Return times vs New positioning.

Race Report
The wet weather took its toll on the race and the turnout could have been better although the quality of the racers was hard to top. Having has a Dassh north and south already the theme of this one was west. The destination was chosen by Tiger who opted for the Musical Museum just past Kew bridge on Brentford high street. 9.9 Miles from Leather Lane, therefore practically 20 miles there and back again, almost as the crow flies. The start was as normal, a flurry of excited racers who usually feel the effects of the nervous energy in the first 5 minutes of the race until they get into there stride. I was in a group with Kungfu Bob and Cemetery Tom as we hammered into the West end straight through a busy Friday night Shaftesbury Avenue, jammed packed with traffic and pedestrians which led the way into Piccadilly and then into the straights of Kensington Gore and the High Street and Olympia through to Hammersmith and Chiswick. Charles flew past us at the first part of Kensington which raised a comment or two, he overtook us at the beginning of the race so it was some consolation that we were in front of him since then. We past the Chis flyover/Roundabout heading towards our destination and saw Graham and Pip heading the other way, obviously Gra being a west London boy he knew exactly where he was going, Pip being a regular racer and the only brakeless was also flying. We caught up on Joe P. and all headed towards our goal. So heading back in a group was Me, Kungfu Bob, Cemetery Tom and Joe P. Taking advantage of the tailwind which was a headwind on the way there. We were flying back through Hammersmith onto Kensington when Kungfu Bob started to attack and took the lead of the group followed by Tom, I lost sight of Joe. This folllowed suit most of the way back until we got to Shaftesbury Avenue triangle where Tom and I managed to retake the postion from Kungfu Bob which set up a sprint from Theobald's Road into Leather Lane. In the end Bob came in 2 seconds ahead of me and Tom. Charles was the winner with blinding flat speed. Unfortunately Gabberz who was also contender sustained a puncture and had to get the Circle line back to Leather Lane. Overkill, Gra and VgnKndrck came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th with Pip 5th followed by Bob, Tom and Me with Joe as the tail. A great race at the end of the day with a top quality field. 10 raced. All racers apart from Joe, who stopped for a drink on the way back managed to get there and back again under 1 hour. In stark contrast to the last ASS race where he came in first and only lost on a technicality, you have to love the variation.

Someone asked me why the Good Omens fanfic I write is predominantly fluffy. Two reasons:
I think my poor boys are being tortured enough by their creator (ie, Neil Gaiman et al). I want to give them a little happiness.
I write Romantic Suspense on the regular, and when I say "suspense" I mean it. I need a break, and a chance to write something just soft and happy. To give you an example, THIS is the scene I just finished editing for my futuristic/military Romantic Suspense series Underground: Mole (If you have any self-harm triggers please don't read any further):
Jen leaned her head back against the wall across from Matt's door and breathed sobbing gasps of air, unsure what to do next. One thing she knew -- the man she ran from in there wasn't the Matt Clipper she knew. He was always a bit of a maverick and very definitely skating the thin edge of sanity, but she was never afraid for her life, before. She always knew he wouldn't hurt her.
Now, she wasn't so sure.
A series of loud, stumbling crashes from inside Matt's quarters yanked her attention back, and fear for him pushed aside her sense of self-preservation. Those weren't normal sounds of movement, and they meant the man she loved was in trouble.
She needed to help him. What did she care if he hurt her in the process?
Jen slapped her hand over the door pad and breathed a sigh of relief to find it wasn't locked against her. She wouldn't put it past Matt to lock her out, after what went down in Comms. As she stepped inside -- and around the puddle of vomit to one side of the door -- the thought fled, along with her relief, and a cry of distress tore from her lips.
A small table and its contents lay scattered in the middle of Matt's living room floor. The man himself was sprawled face-down and shirtless in the bedroom doorway. Blood trailed along the floor and soaked one area on the back of the sofa. Crimson handprints smeared the unpainted concrete wall beside the bedroom doorway. Matt's bloody switchblade lay haphazardly on the blood-spattered and stained sofa.
Jen's heart dropped straight through her stomach.
"Matt!" She lunged across the room, dropping to her knees to roll him over onto his back. More blood covered his dark arms and torso, and she blanched at the ragged slice that grooved his left forearm in a jagged line from his wrist to just below his elbow.
"Goddammit." She ripped her own shirt, tearing it from her body in strips to fashion a makeshift tourniquet and bandage around his left arm with quick precision.
"'Ayyy, bay...bee," Matt slurred. His eyelids fluttered, and he tried to raise his head and then let it fall back, laughing brokenly. Clearly, the blood loss was making him giddy, which meant she didn't have much time left if she wanted to save him.
There was never a question she was saving him.
"Don't 'hey, baby' me, Matthew James Clipper," she snapped as she examined the self-inflicted wound quickly. Her throat closed as her examination confirmed her fear. That wound required sealing, and fast. Matt was going to need a BRU, too. He'd lost a dangerous amount of blood.
"Damn it, Matt," she hissed through tears as she checked the tourniquet's tightness and stood. "You promised. I thought we were finally out of the woods."
With that, she turned on her heel and dashed down the corridors to the infirmary to retrieve her medical kit, unconcerned about her lack of shirt. She had more important things than her modesty to worry about, right now. Being the team physician and psychologist left her in the awkward position of knowing way too much people didn't usually want their doctors to know. That applied doubly to Matt, who didn't want her, as his lover, to know any of the stuff her position as team doctor and shrink left her -- unfortunately -- all too aware of.
She knew Matt battled with cutting. Cutting was his mechanism of self-control, though he refused to explain what he was controlling. When they first met, he cut himself to deal with every pain, disappointment, or stress he encountered. It got so bad, during the Divide, Rick ordered Matt into therapy, which dropped him straight into Jen's care.
Only problem was, Matt wouldn't tell her what led to his self-mutilation. After they became lovers, she noticed he'd go months at a time without a single cut. Then, when they broke up the first time, he showed up next morning muster looking like a human blade sharpener. It took her years to convince him to lock his knife up when he didn't need it for work. He didn't give in to the urge as much when the switchblade wasn't in plain sight. And it seemed to work. In the three years since the end of the Divide, she only caught him cutting once, and those wounds were superficial. She worried, but let it go.
Not this time. Matt just escalated from cutting to attempted suicide. Her gut twisted with guilt, aware something she said or did must have triggered him. She just didn't know enough to know what she did.
She picked up her pace as the sick feeling Matt was a real danger to himself, right now, built. It took less than two minutes to make the round trip to the infirmary, but Jen breathed a thankful sigh when she found Matt still breathing and semi-alert when she returned to his side.
"Jen?" His query slurred with blood loss and confusion as she helped him up from the floor and settled him onto the bed, where she could work easier. Sheets could be washed. She wasn't about to treat a patient on the floor if she didn't have to.
She glanced up and saw the pain in his dark eyes. "Yeah?"
"I... I'm sorry, baby girl."
In the process of removing the sealant gel from her kit, Jen froze. Fresh tears spilled from her eyes at his words. It was the first time she ever heard a sincere apology from Matt. Until this moment, she never realized just how badly she needed to hear those words -- and more -- from him. Trembling, she drew deep breaths and fought for calm as she removed the gel and gauze bandages from her kit. She moved around the edge of the bed and crawled across the wide expanse of mattress to reach his wounded arm. Probably should have moved him to the other side of the bed, but there wasn't time, and the right side had been the easiest to help him up onto.
Breathing exercise completed and firmly centered again, she unwrapped his wound and eased the pressure of the tourniquet just a fraction. Unsealing the cap of the pre-loaded syringe, she depressed the plunger and watched the thick, clear wound sealant gel fill the gash on his arm. The gel had replaced stitches and disinfectant swabs back before the Polar Wars and made emergency medicine a hundred times more efficient. Before her eyes, the gel crusted and drew inward, pulling the edges of the wound together until what was once a gaping slash became little more than a thin red line on his dark skin. Tossing the spent syringe into the bedside waste receptacle, she picked up the bandage and began wrapping his forearm. With the wound sealant, the bandage wasn't strictly necessary, but she never took chances with her team.
Especially not Matt.
Besides, bandaging up his arm gave her something to focus on, to keep her mind from spinning away with questions.
"Why did you do it?" She focused on her task, determined to keep her tone steady and professional, even if her heart and brain screamed otherwise.
"I..." His mouth moved for a moment. She lifted her gaze, watching him struggle for explanation. Then his expression shuttered again. "I don't know."
"That's a crock. You know exactly why you did this. You just don't want to tell me." She finished with the bandage and sat back on the bed beside him, kicking off her high heels as she did. "Bet you'd tell Tamia, though."
"Fuck. Not this shit again. Okay, you want the truth?" His gaze followed her motions lazily, but he wasn't fooling her. His mocha eyes were clear and glittering with anger. Almost as if he was offended she saved his life.
Jen sighed in exasperation. "Of course I do."
"It's you." He reached out, captured her hand, and brought it to his lips, where he nibbled the inside of her wrist.
She froze, stunned beyond words by his flip in personality, yet again. He'd just gone from pissed-off, to crazed, to suicidal, and now he was being soft and romantic -- or whatever passed for romantic in Matt's blood-loss addled brain, right now.
On days like today, she seriously worried for Matt's mental health.

top 5 fic ideas you'd like to have a go at?
It's a good question. Presented without any suggestion whatsoever that I might one day write any of these...
1. Haunted tree story - ok bear with me on this one. Hear me out. I’ve had this thing in my head for months about Remus et al. finding this tree in the woods that’s covered in mysterious carvings and they’re like oh ok interesting, and the whole place has a generally unsettling vibe to it and then they keep coming back and dead animals are showing up at the base of the tree and all the plants surrounding the tree are dying and it’s like a whole thing... and it’s all set in like the 1600s. It’s strange. It’s all rotting branches and sigils and spookiness.
2. Pendle witch trials AU - I can’t decide if this is a different story or just a variation on the one above. Remus is Doing Witchcraft in some cottage up in the hills of Lancashire. Sirius religion the church something something something.
3. Pirates - so I haven’t watched the gay pirate show (yet) but the dash is so nautical right now and I think it would be so fun to write something sweet wherein Sirius is a pirate but like a fun one, not like a murderous one. And Lyall is the captain of some sort of merchant vessel... Sirius and James come aboard to cause mischief and nick his boat. Remus is there. It’s all very sunny and bright and cheerful - Beneath a Big Blue Sky at sea, if you will.
4. Peter & James - this one I actually will write. Honestly I’ve written it already but it wasn’t right so I didn’t post it - it needs rejigging. The other day I was on the lookout for Peter-centric prompts and anon asked for “pining Peter with one-sided Peter/James” and that sparked joy so I’ll have a go at that, at some point.
5. Spa AU - yes, spa AU. Saunas and hot stone massages. It does not need a plot. Open-air pools and mud baths and steam rooms. Remus and Sirius in a steam room. Etcetera, etcetera.

What would be Marauders go to Costa/Starbucks/your local family owned coffee shop order?
Well, my darling Roc, as the owner of all coffeeshop AUs, that is something I've definitely thought about!
Peter: a basic caramel frappe with extra cream and caramel. He's not as caffeine-dependent as Remus and doesn't like to experiment with wild combos like James and Sirius, so he sticks to his tried and true favourite.
Sirius: coffee connoisseur who's super picky about his medium-dark continental roast macchiato not being too dark (or else it tastes burnt) but it can't be too light (or else it's child play). He's always like "Moony if you use instant one more time in front of me I will break those beautiful hands of yours," but when it comes to his actual order he'll try wacky flavours with James because he's not weak.
Remus: the hot chocolate fanatic who runs on caffeine. Decaf isn't in his dictionary―who the fuck can actually survive without caffeine? Chugs down instant coffee 24/7, much to Sirius' chagrin, but only because he knows Sirius will make him hot cocoa with a dash of Firewhisky in an attempt to stop him from drinking "such filth."
James: like Sirius, adds all sorts of crap to his drinks when he's out with friends but really prefers ridiculously healthy soy-based chai, hold the sugar and cream ("I can't live off of fat and keep my shape, Padfoot, stop laughing!"). He's the one who orders for all of his friends when they go out together because they're usually too distracted to notice the waiter and he knows all their tastes by heart anyway.
Regulus: fueled by caffeine and pure spite. Takes his espresso as black as a moonless night ("like my soul"). Just as picky as Sirius, but instead of causing a scene, he merely dumps the drink and forces James to make him Euphemia's famous chai with ginger and cardamom. He won't admit it, but that's his favourite drink of all especially when paired with cuddles... and more. ;)
Lily: On a good day, mocha or vanilla lattes with double shots are her best friend. On not-good days (which unfortunately are the majority of days), all the espressos and quadruple shots, s'il vous plait et merci.
if you can tell which of these perfect idiots i spend most of my time thinking about and which ones i can do without, well, nobody asked ok
