Well, Well...Look Whose Limbs Are Still Intact (AKA the 4th NINA installment)
After seeing The First Shadow, I'm revisiting NINA installment #3!
Previously, I had speculated that El may have committed the 4.07 massacre after all, because there are multiple shots where the bodies don't have the Vecna eyes/snapped limbs.
For example, the difference:
Tumblr media
And she may still have, I won't rule that out entirely. However...After seeing TFS, I have questions.
In TFS, when "Henry" doesn't attack in classic Vecna-style (which we actually witness firsthand just as often as we witness traditional Vecna killings), he attacks similarly to the way El does:
Tumblr media
(it's not exactly the same, but the end results are very similar)
It's not Vecna style. Point blank.
When Vecna kills, the limbs always go first, and the eyes go last. We see that in Prancer, we see it in Virginia, and we see it in 1986. Limbs, then jaw, then eyes.
As far as we know, "Henry" on his own doesn't snap limbs at all, let alone jaws. The victims (see: Mr. Newby and Inmate 58361) are usually awake, aware, and screaming in agony, and no bones are broken. The eyes are the only thing to go, and they go fairly quickly.
Not Vecna-style.
So now, of course, I have to look back at her:
Tumblr media
I know we've all seen this scene (and these pictures) so, so many times. Most likely from me, and most likely in another part of this analysis series. However, I want to run through this one part specifically shot by shot because it's EXTREMELY funny to me.
We've got Jumpsuit-A Guy (I'll just call him JA for short) attacking El:
Tumblr media
So you'd assume he's both the One making El's eyes bleed that way and the One making her limbs twist/snap, right? Because he's doing what Vecna does?
(He isn't, but they want you to think he's doing what Vecna does. They're very good at hiding things about jumpsuit guys.)
But check this out.
We never see teen El with: a) twisting/snapping limbs b) the squeezing eye blood pattern c) JA Guy on screen at the same time. We see everything in tight shots. (Of course, always managing to keep that mirror in view behind One without showing us El. That's a secret tool that'll help us later.)
I've put the shot progressions in order from L -> R, top -> bottom, like lines in a book:
Tumblr media
(Blackout to the new Terry/birth memory)
Tumblr media
So, from this scene alone, we actually have very little evidence that JA did both things.
And you might go "Oh James, but look at the subtitles earlier!"
Tumblr media
I have to ask: Are the breaking bones in the room with us right now?
Because all I see is El flailing, which is consistent with the next subtitle:
Tumblr media
But...subtitling aside. I have better evidence that he didn't do both things. The Duffers thought they could pull a fast one on me, but the jokes on them—I'm an autistic freak who liked the I-Spy books way too much as a kid.
Can anyone explain this away?
Tumblr media
And yes, the guy in the final screenshot is a bloody jumpsuit guy, even if I can't tell you with 100% certainty which jumpsuit he is. He's just moving really fast:
Tumblr media
Anyway. That aside, have a look at the blood pattern on El.
The top gowns have blood on the left hip (twisting limbs El), the bottom gowns have blood on the right hip (squeeze eye blood El).
And I thought okay, well, let's run through some explanations:
Maybe somehow we're seeing that lower splotch by her left knee? First off, the stain's too big. Second, it's not the right shape. Third, it's hand-level. Definitely not the knee splotch.
Maybe, by some impossible 3D modeling limb fuck-up that swapped her hands, we're seeing her from behind? Well, let's see...
Tumblr media
Nope! As far as we know, El doesn't have blood on her back, impossible limbs aside.
It seems, almost, like they shot her right side and mirrored it.
See?
Tumblr media
So that's straight up not the same girl. Squeezed bloody eyes El and twisting limbs El are different girls.
That, my friends, means we have a brand-new version of teen El in the massacre.
That's consistent with what I talked about here, the scene at the beginning of NINA where teen El turns around twice:
Tumblr media
Which is also the scene where we get two different doors in the Rainbow Room with teen El...And it all tracks with the doubled/mirrored rainbow room BTS.
So yes, we definitely have at least two versions of NINA running with teen El! One where her eyes bleed squeeze-style, and one where her bones break.
This means that whatever's going on in that scene with JA, he's not responsible for all of it, because the El in the "correct" gown has the eye blood, but the El in the "mirrored" gown has the twisting limbs. Two different girls, two different guys.
So, then, the next logical question to ask is: What is Jumpsuit-A Guy responsible for?
With the way JA's attack on El is filmed (the camera cuts and tight shots), it's nearly impossible to tell which things he's doing.
Disclaimer: None of the childrens' bodies are killed in a traditional Vecna manner. None of the jaws are broken. There's something else going on here, and I'm not entirely sure what it is, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a mirrored version of TFS Henry's attack style (read: limbs first or limbs only rather than eyes only). So when I say "Vecna style", that's me referring to a limbs-first style.
Moving on...I daresay JA doesn't kill "like Vecna". Let me explain.
JA is the only guy we see actively killing in the Rainbow Room, and they're generous enough to swing/pan around to him in a continuous shot for it! No camera cuts there, no extra doubt introduced.
[TFS Brenner voice] They want to be caught so bad, I wonder why they even bother lying to me 🙄
Check it out:
Tumblr media
Eyes go first. No twisting or broken limbs. That is JA's attack style. It's not even close to Vecna style.
If you're like me, you'll go:
"Oh, but James! Look at the body behind JA! The eyes are missing, and a couple of the other bodies look like their bones might be broken."
And you'd be right!
I'm not particularly concerned about that in relation to JA, though, since: a) We know a lot of the backdrop is divorced from the actual action (as I mentioned in here irt blood and impact crater separation), and multiple different corpse positions appear within the same jumpsuit, and there are multiple versions of corpses with non-twisted limbs:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Top Left: JA with two different poses for the "same" corpse. Top Middle: Proving that the top-left photo is, indeed, of JA. Top Right: Two different versions of the "same" corpse with non-broken limbs. Bottom left: The corpse by the shelf goes from broken to unbroken based on relative position to the mirror. Bottom right: Much the same as Bottom Left, corpses go from broken to unbroken based on Brenner's presence.)
As far as I know...as of right now, we haven't found a solid, all-encompassing pattern in the surrounding bodies in relation to the all the jumpsuits.
b) We quite literally just witnessed the pattern of his kill style in the swing-around shot.
And, while I can't 100% confirm that either of these bodies belong to JA, since we don't have confirmation of JA with any non-twisted limb bodies...Once again, I have to ask:
Tumblr media
Are the breaking bones in the room with us right now? Because I personally didn't see any twisted, snapped bones.
And here?
Tumblr media
Well, well...
Tumblr media
Yes, I'm aware those are both across camera cuts. And no, I can't 100% confirm which of the Ones killed those Twos. There may be multiple that don't kill Vecna-style!
It's entirely possible that most of them don't kill Vecna-style, and the Vecna makeup is just an overlay (maybe one that glitches or has missing uploads within NINA. Not a Duffers production error, but an HNL production error).
I will say that JA is the strongest candidate for being one of those non-Vecna-style guys, though.
"Maybe you just caught JA too early in the process for breaking bones?"
I mean, maybe, sure! I can acknowledge that possibility.
It's still not the limbs-first style, though. The order is all wrong, and it still doesn't match what we're shown in the attack on El, gown discrepancy aside. When JA's attacking El, we see the isolated limb-twisting bit before we see the eyes. Meanwhile his attack on Two starts with the eyes. Two's eyes bleed, and his limbs are still intact.
That means JA likely isn't responsible for the limb-twisting bits in the attack on El.
So, my point remains the same: There's at least one One who doesn't attack Vecna-style, and instead attacks like TFS "Henry"—Eyes bloody off the bat, bones not targeted. JA is the strongest candidate I've seen for being one of them. (Put a pin in this. I'm going to talk about it later.)
That supports the two distinct attack styles I was talking about here.
Two does have the cloudy, Vecna-ish eyes, though, and somebody's bones are snapping somewhere...So I genuinely wouldn't be shocked if this, like the gate/dematerialization shot (which I talked about in here), is a dual-outcome overlay of the two attack styles. (More on this in a bit! Hold onto this thought.)
Now, I want to go a layer deeper.
Keeping all that in mind, I want to talk about this bit the released 4.07 script:
Tumblr media
Let me explain.
Baby El, per the script, is through the mirror, which tracks with this jumpsuit discrepancy:
Tumblr media
JA and JC are both on teen El's side of the mirror. JE is a "through the mirror" jumpsuit, placing him with Baby El.
You know who else is actually "through the mirror", both in script and on film?
JD, who, like JE, we only see when we push through the mirror:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And he is, as predicted, associated with a baby El.
I originally thought they had cut that second "through the mirror" bit when they changed to have One break the mirror instead of just being pinned to it, and that we were just seeing baby El in teen El's place.
They didn't cut it, and we have no idea if what Baby El does is the same as whatever Teen El's doing on the other side of the mirror while we can't see her.
So, tl;dr: JE and JD are definitely different from JA and JC, not just based on jumpsuit, but also by location relative to the mirror and the associated ages of their Els.
JD and JE exist through the mirror (read: with baby El). JA and JC exist not through the mirror (read: with teen El).
Which...All of this becomes even funnier when you look at this guy, the only time we see baby El's face and a One who's still somewhat recognizable on screen together in this sequence:
Tumblr media
And like...first off, it's straight up not the same guy. Second off, they're hiding his identity from us.
Just look.
Tumblr media
And even at the most surface-level? Look at the hair. He's not the same guy.
Stunt double, 3D-model, either way. All of this could and arguably should be lined up properly, based on the VFX team's capabilities. Both guys are being dematerialized, but they're not the same guy. I just can't tell you with any certainty which guy he is.
However, this all means the guy we see together on screen with baby El here? He may very well be the guy watching her here:
Tumblr media
The mirror matches, and it's totally different from JD, who gets this:
Tumblr media
(He has the mirror going the opposite way.)
And because he's through the mirror with baby El, this mystery man could be JE, since he's not JD. Again, I just can't say for sure because all we see of JE is his chest and left side, but all we see of secret third guy is his right side, which is so far away that I don't feel comfortable making a claim re: his identity...and JE is deliberately shot mirrored so as not to reveal his right side.
Tumblr media
They're deliberately hiding his identity re: jumpsuit pattern. If I could see his chest, or even parts of his arms, I could tell you for sure which One he is. But I can't...so. Here we are, missing variables.
Shaking the Duffers until they drop loot (J?'s jumpsuit pattern).
Anyway!
Remember when I said they were hiding baby Els from us? This is what I'm talking about. Two different guys, two different girls, and they're deliberately hiding both the face blood of one of the Els and the jumpsuit pattern of the One with her.
Now, remember that those few thoughts I asked you to put pins in? The ones about the mirror being kept in frame with JA, not being able to confirm which One killed that intact-limbs Two, and Two's possible dual-overlay/bones snapping somewhere?
Yeah. This is where all that comes in: The Speculation.
JA and JC are on teen El's side of the mirror. JD and JE...and secret third jumpsuit...are on baby El's side of the mirror.
We can confirm that JA takes the eyes first (read: he doesn't attack Two or El in the bone-breaking/Vecna style), and keeping that mirror in frame during the attack on El implies that someone on the other side of it (read: with baby El) should attack the same way. This supports the theory that we're missing a baby El with the squeezed bloody eye pattern, likely the same baby El that we see in BTS pictures.
Can I say with 100% certainty that JA doesn't break bones? No. However...For the moment, I can comfortably hypothesize (say, 65% certainty), that he's the not the one breaking bones on teen El's side of the mirror.
A logical hypothesis based on that is that Jumpsuit-C Guy (the later Brenner-faced One who's purported by the show to have become Vecna) is the one breaking bones/attacking Vecna-style on teen El's side of the mirror.
All these timelines, the different jumpsuits, seem to be happening simultaneously. It's not a massive stretch for me to hypothesize that this factor is what's contributing to the phantom bone-snapping sound and cloudy eyes we see on Two, despite Jumpsuit-A Guy not snapping his bones (much the same as the dual overlay with the gate and the dematerialization).
We're not shown any concrete evidence as to what kill style JE uses, nor do we have any hard conclusions in regard to his fate, but based on his location relative to the mirror, I'm comfortable hypothesizing that he might be this weird, mystery One with the Vecna-eyes baby El. They don't let us see which attack style JD uses or which baby El eye-blood pattern he's associated with. However, based on the conclusion that he's likely not the guy associated with Vecna-eyes baby El...for the moment, I feel comfortable hypothesizing that he does not attack in the bone-breaking/Vecna-style way, and instead attacks squeeze-style and is associated with the BTS-only Baby El.
This is further supported by the fact that a) JD and Hallway Guy seem to be the same person, and Hallway Guy quick-kills the same way El does:
Tumblr media
It would stand to reason, then, that his slow kills would be similar to hers.
b) JD goes on to become Mindflayer Guy, not Vecna
Tumblr media
(Left: JC, who's smash-cut to Vecna. Right: JD, who's shown shaping the MF)
So, to kind of sum all that up:
JA: Definitely on teen El's side of the mirror, associated with right-hip blood and squeezed bloody eyes teen El. He's probably one of the guys who has an attack style that doesn't break bones first/the squeeze-style attack. We don't know where he ends up, but he may be linked to the Mindflayer.
JC: Definitely on teen El's side of the mirror, possible associated with left-hip blood and twisting limbs Teen El. He may be one of the guys who breaks bones first. He supposedly becomes BrenVecna.
JD: Definitely on Baby El's side of the mirror, never seen on Teen El's side. Associated with mystery blood Baby El. No confirmed attack style, but based on the secretive behavior irt: Baby El's eye blood, he may be one of the guys with an attack style that doesn't break bones/the squeeze-style attack. He's Mindflayer guy.
JE: Baby El's side of the mirror, never seen on Teen El's side. No confirmed attack style or associations. May be associated with Vecna-eyes Baby El, given the secrecy around the mystery man's jumpsuit pattern, which means he may be a bone-breaking guy. We don't know where he ends up, but he may linked to Vecna.
If you made it this far you're automatically stronger than the US Marines. Gold star for all of you.

To Understand Trump’s Staying Power With the White Working Class, Look at Michigan Supporters remain loyal to former president’s policies, personality
Tuesday February 27, 2024 Wall Street Journal
By Jimmy VielkindFollow and Ariel Zambelich
DEARBORN, Mich.—At its peak, more than 100,000 people streamed in and out of the massive
Ford Motor factory here along the Rouge River. In addition to cars and trucks, the behemoth plant helped mint the American middle class.
The thousands of people who still work here and at other factories across Michigan and other Midwest states helped forge those states’ politics. These blue-collar voters were for many years reliable Democrats, but in 2016 a big group of them, mostly white, helped Donald Trump capture the presidency—including an unexpected win in Michigan.
His supporters said they remain loyal to him thanks to a mix of economic policy proposals and a unique personality that they haven’t seen from many other Republicans, according to recent interviews conducted by The Wall Street Journal for its “Chasing the Base” podcast series.
His policies? They shined. They shined…I made more money than I ever had. My money went  further.— James Benson
I just love Trump’s enthusiasm and positivity, he’s positive, he’s  enthusiastic…But I like to see an American leader that says we can be great again, we can be number one.— Joe Pizzimenti
The United Auto Workers endorsed President Biden in January, but union officials acknowledge that a sizable portion of their members back Trump. More than 100,000 people in the Detroit metro area work in auto manufacturing alone. It is still home to the headquarters of marquee American auto brands such as Ford, Chrysler and General Motors.
Trump lost Michigan to Biden in 2020. Democrats made up the difference in white-collar suburbs, including Oakland County northwest of Detroit. They made some inroads in blue-collar areas like Macomb County, northeast of Detroit, but Trump still carried the day.
So did former Rep. Andy Levin, a Democrat who won the portion of his district in that county by 36,000 votes. He said Democrats need to be bolder to blunt the GOP. (Levin lost his seat in 2022 due to an intraparty fight following redistricting.)
Republicans were able to peel off people over culture war issues like abortion and guns and LGBTQ rights… They wouldn’t have succeeded if Democrats had—if the average workingclass person could say, well obviously I know what side my bread is buttered on.— Former Rep. Andy Levin
There are other dynamics that will be important in the general election. Biden has dispatched foreign-policy and political advisers to meet with Muslim and Arab-American leaders upset with the administration’s handling of the war in Gaza. The mayor of Dearborn, home to a major Arab-American population, has said the Biden administration “failed to act to protect the lives of innocent men, women and children.”
John Sellek, a Republican political consultant, said a loss of support from Arab-American and younger voters over the Middle East conflict was as important for Trump as his continued hold on the white working-class.
Macomb County is a bastion of the latter group. It is home to strip malls, sports bars and massive auto plants that cropped up as people moved from Detroit to the suburbs in the latter part of the 20th century.
Trump brought many new voices into the Republican Party here, and that has caused a fight about who controls it at the state level. Stacy Van Oast, 59 years old, said at a monthly coffee hour held at the Macomb County GOP office that one result has been dysfunction.
Peter Kiszczyc emigrated from Poland in 1984 and worked for decades at area factories. He said it was great that the former president has broadened the party’s appeal.
He’s changing the party…He’s appealing to many blue-collar workers especially, not only [in] Macomb county, but Michigan So I am Christian, [a] patriot, and I support Donald  Trump 100%.— Peter Kiszczyc

Recently, I read a comment that Flint “barely won” the fight with Singleton and . . . I’ve got some thoughts.
Tumblr media
Previously, I talked about how we initially view Flint mainly through the eyes of the crew in season one and it’s absolutely most applicable in the series premiere. We don’t even get a glimpse of “James” until he collapses inside Miranda’s door at the end of the second episode. Up until then, we are deliberately fed not lies, exactly, but deliberate misdirection. Twice during the first season, we are tossed into the story through the eyes of a newcomer like a cat tossed into a bathtub.
First, we see the story from Silver’s perspective. Granted, we have NO idea what his history is, but as brand new baby viewers, ourselves, (on our first watch, that is, because who the hell stops at a single viewing?) Silver is the perfect cypher to dress up in our own naïveté. So that bathtub that our Silver kitten gets tossed into is INSTANT unrest and a failing captaincy with no real power left, grasping at control like sheafs of paper caught and scattered on the wind. The second time, we see it through Dufresne’s first boarding. Both times, we are wrong about the character of the cat in the tub.
In this first instance, we are meant to doubt Flint’s cunning and even more, we’re meant to doubt his strength. We’re all familiar with the Gregory MaGuire effect (even if you don’t think you are). MaGuire wrote Wicked, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Son of a Witch and many more. Basically, he flips well known stories on their heads and repaints the protagonists in slightly less flattering lights, giving deeper, more human motivations to the stories antagonists.
We’re meant to expect that here. Jumping on the Oz example, we’re meant to find that the legendary Flint, casting such long shadows over the story of Treasure Island, is in essence, a little old snake oil salesman behind a curtain.
That’s our setup going into this duel. We’re supposed to think this elaborate facade of smoke and mirrors is finally going to collapse, revealing Flint to be incompetent.
So let’s take a look at the fight Flint “barely” won.
We see him flipping tables in his cabin just prior to the fight. He’s just learned he doesn’t have the votes, due to Vane’s murderous intervention. He’s frustrated because he doesn’t yet have a plan.
I’ve seen speculation about him finding the feather in the wreckage and this proves that he notices every little thing out of place. Sure, Flint is fastidious and detail oriented, but we also, if you recall, saw him carefully placing that feather with the log book in the drawer. It’s a security measure to know if someone comes snooping. So he finds the feather and knows that someone who was onboard the Walrus knows about the page, so he immediately formulates a plan. He’s gonna frame Singleton for the theft of the page. He decides right then.
*edited to add: I’m 100% sure he knows Singleton is NOT the one with the page. It’s likely Singleton can’t read, which Flint would be well aware of, perhaps not just as a member of his crew, but as someone who is challenging him for the captaincy. He knows whoever DID steal the page can read, because they came back to look at the log to read it for context clues. He gets all this from that feather. Flint is openly declaring Singleton to be a thief in front of the whole crew to force the hand of the real thief, hoping the fear of retaliation would press him to more quickly try to move on it or, as Silver does, attempt to get the hell outta Dodge.
So, stepping out on deck, he’s had zero contact with Singleton, which means the blank page is folded up somewhere on his person. At the end of the fight, we see him take the page out of Singleton’s pocket. He doesn’t search him, hoping to find something, he goes right for it.
He wasn’t “losing the fight”, he was allowing Singleton to get in close enough that he could plant the page in his coat pocket while still managing to not die, so stealthily, that the entire crew, watching the fight, wouldn’t see it happen.
Flint wasn’t a weaker fighter than Singleton. We see clearly his technique is far superior from the very first parry, he just needed time to plant the page. I’ve seen a lot of commentary on this fight and no one seems to really get this. It wasn’t just a fight, it was a deliberate misdirect, one choreographed to the audience in Flint’s interaction with Billy.
Flint: “The men think I’m . . .”
Billy: “Too weak?”
Flint: “I was gonna say unlucky.”
In conclusion, Flint could’ve taken Singleton out immediately, but chose not to.

Brigadier General Hugh Mercer died on January 12th 1777 after being wounded at the Battle of Princeton.
Historians argue that, had it not been for his untimely and grisly death at the Battle of Princeton in 1777, Hugh Mercer, born in Aberdeenshire, would have been a greater leader than Washington and would rank as one of the greatest American heroes of all time.
Born on January 17h, 1726, at the manse of Pitsligo Kirk in Roseharty, Scotland, Hugh Mercer was the son of Reverend William Mercer and his wife Ann. At the age of 15, he left home to attend Marischal College at the University of Aberdeen to study medicine. Graduating as a doctor, he practiced locally until the arrival of Prince Charles Edward Stuart and the beginning of the 1745 Jacobite Uprising.
Rallying to the Prince’s colours, Mercer became an assistant surgeon in the Jacobite Army. He remained in this service until the Battle of Culloden. Mercer was forced to flee Scotland for America in 1747. Arriving in Philadelphia, he settled on the Pennsylvania frontier and returned to practising medicine. by 1758 he was, like many Scots who fled, serving in the British army, battling Shawnee and Delaware Indians, Mercer and his men took part in Lt. Colonel John Armstrong’s raid on Kittanning on September 8th, 1756. and became separated from his men. Alone following the battle, he made his way 100 miles on foot back to Fort Shirley where he received medical attention and was heralded a hero and promoted to the rank of Captain, it was here that Mercer was to become good friends with a man that would shape the remaining years of his life, also a Colonel at the time, his name was George Washington.
Before you start questioning his loyalty with being in the British army remember Washington was also in their pay at this time. After the 7 year war he settled back into private practice but 15 years later was elected as a Colonel of the Minute Men of Spotsylvania a Militia that would play an important part in the American Revolution, he had initially excluded from the elected leadership and branded a “northern Briton,” later being appointed Colonel in the Virginia Line part of the Continental Army which rose in revolt against British rule after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War, once again he was fighting against “the auld enemy”.
One of the officers under Mercer was future president James Monroe. He rode through the ranks to Brigadier General distinguishing himself and involving himself with George Washington battle plans until January 3rd while on their way to The Battle of Princeton leading a vanguard of 350 soldiers, Mercer’s brigade encountered two British regiments and a mounted unit. A fight broke out at an orchard grove and Mercer’s horse was shot from under him. Getting to his feet, he was quickly surrounded by British troops who mistook him for George Washington and ordered him to surrender. Outnumbered, he drew his saber and began an unequal contest. He was finally beaten to the ground, then bayoneted repeatedly—seven times—and left for dead.
When Washington learned of the British attack and saw some of Mercer’s men in retreat, he himself entered the fray. Washington rallied Mercer’s men and pushed back the British regiments, but Mercer had been left on the field to die with multiple wounds to his body and blows to his head. (Legend has it that a beaten Mercer, with a bayonet still impaled in him, did not want to leave his men and the battle and was given a place to rest on a white oak tree’s trunk, while those who remained with him stood their ground. The tree became known as “the Mercer Oak” and is the key element of the seal of Mercer County, New Jersey.
When he was discovered, Mercer was carried to the field hospital in the Thomas Clarke House (now a museum) at the eastern end of the battlefield. In spite of medical efforts by Benjamin Rush, Mercer was mortally wounded and died nine days later on January 12, 1777.
In 1840 he was re-buried at Philadelphia’s Laurel Hill Cemetery. Because of Mercer’s courage and sacrifice, Washington was able to proceed into Princeton and defeat the British forces there. He then moved and quartered his forces to Morristown in victory.
The second picture show a painting entitled George Washington at Battle of Princeton features in the foreground Hugh Mercer lying mortally wounded in the background, supported by Dr. Benjamin Rush and Major George Lewis holding the American flag. This portrait is the prize possession of Princeton University.

God I hope that the announcement of James L Barry's retirement doesn't spark hatred for the new artists, or worse off, generational warfare inside the fandom.
A big impression I get from these new graphic novels is a push to appeal more to a newer, younger demographic (zoomers, as people like to say)
Looking at the works of Natalie Riess and Sara Goetter, they clearly have a far more modern YA style
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The whole effort of changing the graphic novels to retellings of the first arc feels like a very deliberate move to attact a new audience of kids who are not already entrenched in the fandom.
Like ya, stories about fan-favorite side characters like Brightheart and Feathertail drawn by the same guy who drew the original comics over a decade ago are going to go over well with the longtime fans, but are these going to do anything for the elementry school kids for whom these names have no prior significance and the series is this 100+ book mountain they'd have to start climbing? Probably not as much.
A new start, drawn by these new hip, young artists is going to be a much more effective onboarding for the series. I don't think the fandom is often willing to admitt just how insular the commuinity is, and how completely it's vanished from popular culture outside of its reputation as "that one series everybody used to be into like 15 years ago".
What the franchise really needs more than anything else right now is a new lease on life, something that can break it out of it's insulated shell and get it back into the popular culture, and thats going to require a shakeup, and its going to require letting go some classic, nostalgic elements.
This could be a the start of new era of the brand where onboarding newer fans is going to take priority over pleasing long-term fans, and where going to have to live with that and hopefully not turn the fandom into a toxic hell hole.

Reddit User u/aambro flagged this article from 'Columbus Business First' (unfortunately it's behind a paywall) which stated that the new 'Superman' (originally titled 'Superman Legacy' ) movie:
"is expected to receive more than $11 million in tax credits. Superman: Legacy projects it will hire 3,254 Ohio residents, according to the application. The film’s total eligible production expenditures for the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit were nearly $37 million, or a little more than 10% of the film’s total budget of more than $363.8 million."
The user then asked the film's director James Gunn on Threads as to whether or not this was true and that the budget was $363.8 million. Here is Gunn's response:
Tumblr media
Yet this does not appear to add up.
Over on r/boxoffice, user u/SilverRoyce posted this to the subreddit. They, through the usage of public records, have proven that the movie will be made with a total production budget of around $363.8 million; as seen here:
Tumblr media
This means that the movie would have a budget of roughly $270 million+. Now this doesn't include other tax breaks from other places they may film, nor does it include the marketing costs; which would probably be another $100 million+ in total, bringing the total budget to around $463.8 million+. Nearly half a billion for one movie!
Now here comes the tricky part. Breaking even. For the unawares (and include myself in this particular category), breaking even is when a movie makes back it's budget, plus an extra 2.5%. Anything above this is considered a profit. If the budget 'Superman' is around $270 million then it would require $546.75 million in order to break even; and that still isn't taking into consideration the overall production total plus marketing.
If we were to take the $463.8 million into consideration, this would give us the mind bogglingly absurd number of $939.6 million in order to break even.*
So let's say that the movie needs to make $546.75 million in order to break even; is this even possible given the current state of Hollywood? Movies such as Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (both movies I personally enjoyed), underperformed at the global box office in 2023. Has Hollywood learnt nothing from movies having overinflated budgets underperforming last year, or are they that arrogant that they think it was a one off?
This also fails to take into consideration as to whether or not the general audience still cares about a wider DC Cinematic Universe given that the last eight DCEU movies released between February 2020 and December 2023 (Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad, Black Adam, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom), were all box office bombs; and given how poorly Warner Bros. Discovery handled the end of the DCEU and how Warner Bros as a whole handled the overall DCEU. It's a reboot of a movie universe, very few people cared about by the end of it all.
Kickstarting a brand new DC Cinematic Universe with a movie that is looking like it will cost $463.8 million in total, is either an incredibly ballsy move or a ridiculously braindead move; and I honestly cannot tell which it is.*
Of course none of this takes into consideration either A) Discovery selling Warner Bros to another studio, or B) Zaslav not playing his old trick of writing the movie off for tax purposes.
Now the latter of those two options isn't likely, but let us, for the moment, entertain this train of thought.
Currently the movie is set to receive $11 million of a total of $37 million in tax breaks from the State of Ohio. Assuming they eventually take the full $37 million and take the full offered tax breaks from other states, plus whatever they got in a tax write off, say roughly $40 million, (the cancelled movies: 'Batgirl' costing around $90 million in its tax write off, 'Scoob! Holiday Haunt' whilst no official number has been given we can assume it would've been around $40 million as was its budget, as the potentially scrapped 'Coyote vs. ACME' costing $30 million in a tax write off; giving us the Median of $40 million) the studio would be lucky to make $100-$110 million in a tax write off; or roughly 27.49% to 30.24% of its budget (not accounting for marketing).*
Now I will freely admit to having but little care in this movie and the larger DCU as a whole. I mislike James Gunn as a filmmaker and have little faith in him delivering a DC Cinematic Universe I'll enjoy. Yet he is not my main concern. My main concern lies with the studio itself. With how the DCEU was handled, the abuse the actors faced on the set of the Justice League reshoots, the constant studio interference, the belittling of a paying section of their own audience etc. has left an incredibly sour taste in ones mouth that refuses to go away.
Given Mr Zaslav's penchant for cancelling projects at a frequency that would make the CEO of Netflix envious, one has to ask the question 'Will this new DCU ever see the light of day?'
I know but little of Hollywood accounting, yet even as someone who cares little and less for this new DCU; I am somewhat concerned that Zaslav might be trying to kill this new universe before it ever has a chance to live!
Is this all because the studio is about to be sold off? Or is it because Zaslav is an incompetent buffoon, who is surrounded by lackwits and lickspittles? Or is it something else?
TL;DR: The new Superman movie is going to have a total production budget of '$363.8 million before marketing costs are factored in, despite most movies with inflated budgets that were released last year underperforming at the global box office.
*1) It should be worth pointing out that this number is ridiculous even for the current state of Hollywood Blockbusters underperforming.
*2) Also it bears note that Warner Bros have also poorly handled their other big IPs such as Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter (see turning 'The Hobbit' into three movies and the entire 'Fantastic Beasts' franchise and the upcoming Harry Potter TV series).
*3)I accept I could be completely wrong about this.

#OurFlagMeansDeadloch Watch Party - Episode 3
(crossposted from my twitter)
"Oh yeah. I wasn't sure how long I'd be down here, so I started a piss corner."
This has a ring of, "We may need to start eating some of the crew."
***
"This body could be 50 years old, could be 100 years old."
"It's wearing a bomber jacket, James, so I don't think it's *100* years old."
I love Dulcie coming at James's pretension with logic. Get his ass, Dulcie!
***
"Shedding evidence like a snake, with a secret!"
Confirmation that Archie would definitely get along with Eddie!
***
McGangus calling Eddie "inspectress" is so gross.
***
It cracks me up that Eddie is still just walking around in one sandal.
***
omg, now Eddie traced her foot on a piece of cardboard, cut it out, and duct taped it to her foot for a new sandal! I just love her particular brand of mess.
***
"Apols, forgot who I was talking to."
So far there's been a distinct lack of James's face being punched. Who's gonna remedy that?
***
"Is this a date? Is this a restaurant?" lol!
***
I knew there was something going on with Eddie back in Darwin and figured it was related to her partner--glad we got some details on this sooner rather than later.
***
I like the recurring gag of Dulcie trying to pretend she understands about sloops.
***
Ooh, twist! And once again, Abby's investigative curiosity is the key!

Omg Kaz if you are too busy it's absolutely not obligatory but I was wondering if you could make a list of videos for getting to know got7? Like the one you made for pentagon! I don't know anything about got7 but I would like to and you always seem to have so many cool recommendations! Again only if you have the time and want to!! Thank you :-)
hi!!! i am not too busy! i'm aghase for life so i am very happy to help you out here, got7 is seriously one of the best groups ever, and one of the top 2 groups to come out of jyp. it's crazy that they got it so right twice in a row. 2pm are, like, the godfathers of got7, and it is actually pretty endearing to see that some of them are very close! junho considers jinyoung of got7 his dongsaeng and they are very good friends (as seen on junho's most recent i live alone appearance). more under the cut!
anyways. so, got7 are, in age order: mark (rapper, visual, american member), jayb (leader, main vocal), jackson (main rapper, face of the group, chinese member), jinyoung (lead vocal, dancer, visual, center, face of the group), youngjae (main vocal), bambam (rapper, thai member), yugyeom (main dancer, vocal, maknae).
the entire rap line of got7 is the international line or called the atk (amerithaikong) line, which is insane if you think about it. entire rap line (rap!!!!) made of some dudes who aren't even performing in their first language. that takes guts and talents. every member in the group has either produced or written songs for got7, jaebeom is their primary producer, but so are jinyoung and youngjae. yugyeom, too. jinyoung has been known to choreograph for the group, and vigilantly monitors their performances. bambam is the most fashion forward member and it is all over his body of work, which is so exciting.
jackson is jackson, like, that is literally jackson wang and if you open youtube and type in his name you will find tons of videos because he is really the face of the group and a very well established solo artist, too. here is his latest big single blow which is truly a serve, the earworm inducing 100 ways, and my personal favorite LMLY. here is jackson answering the web's most searched questions and his little stint on the late late show with james corden.
anyways, moving on.
got7 song association, elle; this is a very easy and breezy intro to who got7 is and their very own, personal brand of clownery.
got7 takes a friendship test, glamour; this is one of my favorite videos of got7, and my comfort video too. it is funny and sweet and you learn a lot about the members and their chemistry.
7 things you don't know about got7, mtv news; another easy and fun one.
Interview with people tv; probably their most iconic interview for a lot of hysterical reasons. this is 24 minutes long but not a single minute is wasted.
got7 hard carry season 2 & 2.5; so, the entirety of this was on got7's vlive channel but vlive has been eaten by weverse (fuck hybe, man) so here is a youtube playlist of some bits and pieces. this was the show that made me fall irrevocably in love with got7. season 2.5 is on youtube in its entirety, and i'm pretty sure if you look for season 2 on the usual sites, they might have uploaded it there.
got7's TMI lab, M2; what it says on the tin. the first episode is not subbed, so just start with the second. lots of fun nonsense here. got7 truly are variety idol royalty.
performances:
nanana mv; their latest comeback and the first after leaving jyp.
crash & burn, be original; yugyeom and jackson choreographed this. one of the coolest performances they have ever done.
crash & burn, music bank; they performed live here and i always include this in my recs because of youngjae's stunning live adlibs (at 3:00). he is on par with minjun of 2pm as the best vocalist jyp has ever had. it's truly bonkers.
you are van live; this is my favorite got7 title track and this is one of the best and funniest and realest things they have ever done. live performers.
never ever cooking live; they sing and decorate a cake. what is not to adore.
1° tape; their live performance of spinning top's 1°. one of the best songs in their entire discography, written by yugyeom. everyone is so stunning here, especially youngjae.
if you do, mbc music festival; iconic performance of an absolutely perfect track. they slowed it down in the first half but the performance does not suffer whatsoever.
just right comeback stage; their big breakthrough hit. like 2pm, rookie got7 were known for their intense martial arts choreography.
lullaby pyjama version; live in living color, baby! this song has insanely fun choreography.
AAA awards medley; the greatest to ever do it. absolute beasts.
poison, be original; this is just a great song with such clever choreography (by jinyoung, yugyeom and jackson), once again. there is one performance where jinyoung forgot his handkerchief.
runaway, 6th fanmeeting; the only time they performed the greatest track in their entire discography live. written and produced by jinyoung.
breath (written and produced by youngjae), you are, fan favorite page, encore, not by the moon, thursday, you calling my name (including yugyeom’s very own gashina moment)
on top of it all, the members all have solo careers. jaebeom has  released under his stage name jay b (including the breakdancing he was known for in got7) and his producer tag Def. yugyeom is at AOMG, which houses LeeHi and GRAY, and has released quite a bit solo stuff. his collab with gray, all your fault, is absolutely brilliant and required listening. bambam is at abyss now, the same label sunmi is at, and has shown the world that he is a true allrounder. he is now a fixed cast member of variety show master in the house.
youngjae is at sublime, the very same company handling all of jackson's korean releases, and i just want them to finally make jjap jjap project a real thing. here they both are on youngjae's radio show, best friend! youngjae starred in midnight sun (musical) last year, and he starred in so not worth it, netflix's first korean sitcom, and it is as delightful as it sounds. his solo music is very poppy and cool; here is sugar, his latest comeback. youngjae is such a special case because he only trained for a few months after he got into jyp, and then debuted straight off the bat as the main vocal. he won awards in high school for his singing and he made it a point to often perform fully live (occasionally blowing out his voice in the process, but hey, that's dedication.)
jinyoung is the most established actor in all of got7. he most recently starred in the second season of yumi's cells, and the tvn drama The Devil Judge (HUGE recommendation). he had a cameo in the first episode of reborn rich, and starred in he is psychometric and when my love blooms. he has just released his first solo album, but his first ever solo release dive is outstanding. perfect pop rock.
mark has released an entire solo album, including the singles last breath, my life, and lonely. those songs are so mind-bogglingly good, it is hard to comprehend that got7's most introverted member just came out of the gate swinging right away.
their best albums imo are: spinning top, call my name, 7 for 7, breath of love, and the entire flight log trilogy that has to be seen as a full body of work.
flight log is got7's own, lore heavy narrative (like bts' most beautiful moment), that starts with flight log: departure and corresponding title track fly, is continued by flight log: turbulence and iconic got7 banger hard carry, and ends with flight log: arrival and the incomparable never ever. jinyoung is the protagonist of the story, and it is all very, y'know. life and death. very tragic and beautiful.
ah, i think this is quite enough, sorry! i hope this can be of any help to you. thank you so much for that nice ask, i had a lot of fun compiling this. ♡

so, earlier today i was having a discussion with a friend about how james cameron's avatar had just zero fucking cultural impact, which is kinda nuts considering how huge of a movie it was.
then a few hours later, i learned goncharov fics surpassed the number of avatar fics on ao3.
my friend is terminally offline. so i first had to explain ao3, which they grasped fine. i then had to explain goncharov, which...well, that took a while. but they got there!
then i had the immeasurable joy of informing them that goncharov, a movie we invented whole-cloth less than a week ago has more fan works on ao3 than avatar. the glee on their face was amazing. just fucking transported.

sometimes i get so angry about how the housing market bubble bursting led to the economy collapsing and literally never recovering for the middle class. like...basically wiped out the middle class entirely, if we're being honest.
my bank just offered me a "high yield" savings account. high yield! just a fucking amazing APY! ...the APY is 0.4%. zero. point. four.
in 2006, i worked in a call center for $17.60 an hour and had a savings account with a 9% APY. not 0.9%, a full fucking 9%. i'd only been with the call center for a year and a half, i was 24 years old, my credit was middling at best, and that savings account was brand fucking new with a bank i'd NEVER banked with.
high yield. 0.4%.
my field is in-home healthcare now, and i get paid $9.25 an hour.
the fucking rage i feel at what was taken away from my end of my generation (eldest millennial) and fully denied to everyone younger than us is unreal sometimes.

do y'all even know how much i hate being an "elder queer" at 40? a whole goddamn generation before me was wiped out by a plague that politicians deemed not their problem bc it was killing the "right" people. like. this was OPENLY STATED. i spent a large chunk of my childhood going to funerals. nevermind the fact that killing queer people for being queer wasn't codified into law as a hate crime until i was a junior in high school.
i should NOT be an elder queer, i should be middle at most. i am a middle aged queer. most of the elder queers died.
when i was growing up i didn't go to pride parades, i went to pride marches. because that's 100% what they were in the 80s and 90s.
from the absolute bottom of my heart, LEARN OUR FUCKING HISTORY. a generation was nearly wiped out so you young queers could be here. don't let that have been in vain, please.

March 2nd 1838, an advert was placed for a new joint stock banking firm in Glasgow: marking the founding of the Clydesdale Banking Company.
Two months later, the Clydesdale Banking Company opened for business in Glasgow - and Edinburgh - in May 1838. The history of the bank recalls that it was to be ‘chiefly a local bank - having few branches - but correspondents everywhere’. The bank was initially viewed as the brainchild of a collective of Glasgow businessmen, described as ‘liberal radicals … who were active in the government and charities of the city’. James Lumsden was the lynchpin behind the bank’s formation, a councillor who would later hold the role of Lord Provost of Glasgow.
Throughout the 19th century, Clydesdale hoovered up smaller banks, and was purchased by the Midland Bank in 1920, before merging with the North of Scotland Bank in 1950.
Mergers across the banking industry reduced the number of Scottish banks and by 1969, Clydesdale was the smallest after the Bank of Scotland and the Royal Bank of Scotland.
The bank were the first of our banks to start issuing a “polymer” notes in March 2015, and saw them immediately being put on auction site Ebay fetching up yo £100!! Since then the novelty has worn off.
It was eventually sold to the National Bank of Australia in 1987 but has now been separated again and was sold off last year again becoming an independent. In 2018 it was announced that Clydesdale Bank’s holding company CYBG would acquire Virgin money for £1.7 billion in an all-stock deal, and that the Clydesdale Bank will be getting phased out as a brand with Virgin Money being the new name of all the brands they own.
As more and more banks are disappearing from the High Streets, Clydesdale/ Virgin have recently closed 31 branches in locations across the UK, Airdrie, Banchory, Broughty Ferry, Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Galashiels, Milngavie, Musselburgh, Oban, Portree, Stenhousemuir and Wick have all been lost in the last 6 moths.
While Clydesdale are still issuing notes the brand's owner, is retreating from its contracts to supply cash machines run by rival lenders. No longer will you get a crisp Clydesdale polymer note when drawing cash out of other ATM’s on the link system, the contract to supply them is being taken over by the other issuers of notes, Royal Bank of Scotland and Bank of Scotland. The move to infection-free contactless card payments during the Covid crisis has accelerated the reduced use of readies. With Clydesdale Bank no longer being a trading brand the name will continue to appear on the notes you get out of Virgin Money cash machines, but not any others.
The idea of issuing a Virgin Money banknote must have appealed to Richard Branson, particularly if his cheerful physog appeared on it with an airliner or balloon. But that's not happening. Virgin Money is not saying how much cash it's retiring as notes are returned, but it will be a big reduction from the £2.3bn which I'm understand is now in circulation - around 47% of the Scottish banknote total.
You wouldn't bet on it continuing indefinitely, because it's an odd and expensive advertising and marketing tool to support a brand being consigned to history, so in my opinion the notes will be gone from the Scottish scene before to long so anyone out there who still might have the old paper ones hang onto them, they might just be worth a bob or two in the not too distant future
