Such a shame James Potter died in 1981. Not because he was murdered at 21, but because he never got to listen to Wham!

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart But the very next day, you gave it away This year, to save me from tears I'll give it to someone special
You loved Christmas so much and you were excited to share it with your first boyfriend who happened to be The Chosen One. You asked your parents if you could celebrate Christmas with your friends this year and celebrate New Year with them.
They agreed knowing how hard it was for you to make friends and how much they mean to you. You were wrapping up gifts by the fireplace in the common room when Hermione and Weasley Twins joined you by the couch.
"Hey, have you seen Harry?"Hermione asked fiddling with your cello tape.
"You can talk to me also, my mom tells me I am quite a special child," you said good-naturedly and the group laughed at your quip.
"I know you are very special love you know what I mean" Hermione rolled her eyes at the sight of you chuckling at your stupid joke.
"I am kidding last I saw him he stayed back at the Quidditch Ground after his practice"
Hermione ruffled your hair and quickly left to find her best friend. You soon noticed the twins were still here. While the younger twin fell into an easy conversation with you George couldn't help but look at how beautiful you looked in the light emanating from the fireplace. How your smile brightens up his day or how your friendly touches set his soul on fire.
"You know I also think you are quite special love," George said donning his usual smirk.
You giggled knowing how George has been flirting with you ever since you got to know him. You had to remind yourself that you had a boyfriend when he would even look at you. Surely it's nothing. Right?
He loved Harry like his own brother but did he have to take the only girl who has managed to light up his heart like a Christmas tree? To put it in layman's terms George Weasley was in love with the chosen one's girlfriend who was like his brother. He felt so guilty but also glad that because of Harry he got to know you.
As Hermione made her way toward the quidditch ground she saw Harry locking lips with Cho. His hands were on her waist, hers on his collar.
"HARRY JAMES POTTER" Hermione was infuriated with her best friend. He separated from Cho in seconds.
"Hermione I can explain please don't tell Y/n"
"Explain my foot Potter I am disappointed in you if you didn't love her you could have broken up with her, honestly what is wrong with you?"
"Please don't tell her"
This made her furious
"Potter you are my best friend and I say this with respect but you are an arsehole if you think I will take your side this time"
She turned around making her way to the common room thinking about how will she break the news.
------------
A year later
Once bitten and twice shy I keep my distance, but you still catch my eye Tell me baby, do you recognize me? Well, it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me
To say last year's Christmas was hard for you was an understatement. Hermione told you how sorry she was that she caught Harry and Cho making out and how disappointed she was in Harry.
You still remember how she looked at you expecting you to cry or throw a fit something but all you did was leave your gifts there and got up from the couch
"Make sure everyone gets their gifts" with that you made your way to your room. You were more disappointed than heartbroken because you had been seeing how Harry looked at Cho and while some part of you just waited for him to look at you like that your relationship with him was a ticking bomb waiting to explode.
And it did. You just didn't expect it to be that soon because you did genuinely love Harry and for him to break your heart like this was disappointing.
Now that Harry had shattered your heart George took his sweet time to mend your broken heart. He has waited this long to be with you he can wait longer if it meant he got to be with you because deep down he knows all the wait will be worth it.
Christmas was next month and you were nervous. Everyone was going to be there and you know it was going to be awkward.
"I am going to be there too you know?"George held your hand gently.
You were so thankful to have him around to shoot down any insecure thoughts you had. To be honest they started brewing when you started noticing how different Harry started to behave around Cho. How he had all the compliments reserved for her. How he was there for you but never really there for you.
"I know George but I have been enough burden for you, you need a break from my constant complaining too" you tried your best not to let your voice waver.
"That's not correct yesterday you were just crying," he said jokingly
You chuckled. This has been a cycle for a year. You cried and George made you laugh. You felt a similar feeling bubbling when he held your hand gently, or if he would listen to you with such concentration, or if he would look at you like you are the only person in the room.
It was getting a bit overwhelming because you never felt like this with Harry and you almost felt bad to get over Harry this quickly. Almost. He held your hand again.
"I am going to be there for you Y/n," he said, you noticed how his eyes flicked to your lips for a minute. There was no way he had feelings for you right? No, it was wrong for your friend's older brother to feel this way.
"Can I kiss you?" his eyes widened at your words and the moment you thought about apologizing you felt his lips on you. He kissed you so gently. You felt your heartbeat increase as he cupped your jaw to kiss you properly.
He breaks the kiss to take a breather. You like how he looks right now. Out of breath, cheeks blushing, pupils dilated.
"Sorry I just had to kiss you, I have been wanting to do that for a very long time." his cheeks got redder at his own confession.
"How long?" your voice soft and genuine
"Since the day I saw you," he said cupping your cheeks again.
"But I was with Harry that time"
"Yes it broke my heart watching you with him, but it was crushing my soul to watch your heartbreak time and again." he brushed your cheeks with his thumbs as he spoke up again "It is fine if you want to take time"
"If you don't mind let's take it slow, we can still go on dates and do something you like?"You didn't want to agree that somewhere in your heart you had liked George Weasley too when he would relentlessly flirt with you but also check up on you when you felt down. A trait you find missing in your previous partner.
"Well lovie I would also love to do something you like to do" he was beaming with the fact that you wanted to give him a chance. He got closer to you and noticed how your breath hitched.
"And I will wait for you as long as I get to be yours" he smirked noticing your cheeks flush.

Christmas Day
I'll give it to someone I'll give it to someone special Who'll give me something in return I'll give it to someone (hold my heart) I'll give it to someone special (it wants to go)
You were standing at the entrance of the burrow. You were a bit early and you could already hear chatter from inside. It made you more nervous. You knocked on the door and Molly welcomed you with a bright smile.
"Good Evening Mrs. Weasley Happy Christmas" you gave her your own version of a bright smile.
"Oh, Y/nn you and your formalities how many times have I told you to call me Molly."
"Sorry...uh yes Molly" she guided you toward the living where everyone was settled in front of the fireplace. As soon as you settled down a familiar voice made itself known.
"You are looking beautiful Y/n"
You looked up to see Harry looking at you whilst Cho held to him with her dear life.
You gave him a small smile "Thank you Harry you too"
Ron and Hermione chuckled lightly, you looked at them mockingly confused.
"Y/n I'll get you a hot chocolate, make yourself comfortable"
Before Molly could move a voice from the staircase interrupted her.
"Mum let me get her hot chocolate you can rest"George huffed
"My sweet boy, it's on the stove" she pinched his cheek as his eyes took you in with a smirk on his lips.
You have tried to keep your relationship a secret although you have seen Molly and Fred give you a knowing look and right now Fred settled himself beside you and wondered loudly.
"George never got me anything" his face looked so serious you almost apologized on behalf of George.
"Yeah me neither," Ron said while looking for more marshmallows.
George soon appeared with your hot chocolate and some snacks on a plate.
"Snacks too?!" Percy exclaimed bewildered at his brother's behavior.
George quickly settled himself between you and Fred. While George gave you heart eyes Fred poked him on his arms.
"You know there is plenty of space?"
"Yes but it's warm here," he said his eyes not leaving yours, while Fred rolled his eyes he was happy to see George so happy with you.
While others continued their chatter you were both involved in subtle touches. It surprised you really you never thought you were the touchy kind but it has always been a bit different with George.
"Someone is starring daggers on my back" he giggled looking pointedly towards Harry.
"And? What am I supposed to do about that?" all you could see was how George's nose and cheeks were blushing and how much you wanted to kiss it.
"You are staring love" he smirked but internally he was bursting with love.
"You reckon I stare at someone else?" you giggled as he put a hand on his chest and scowled at you mockingly.
"Y/n L/n don't you dare stare at someone else other than me."
The lovebirds were unaware they still had the chosen one's attention. He didn't mean to feel so angsty on a Christmas Day when he had his girlfriend beside him but he had missed you. They say you take things for granted until you lose them. Harry Potter took you for granted and lost you to George Weasley. It made him sick that you looked happier with him, more in love.
--------
Things could not get worse for Harry Potter right now. Everyone was sleeping peacefully but he had a big fight with Cho about how he didn't pay attention to her one bit today. It got worse when he realized you and George were in the next room.
Sounds of the bed creaking, and soft moans could be heard. He forced his eye shut when he heard you.
"I'm yours, George."
"Uh, babe you really mean that?" he asked as if he was not thrusting himself into you right now
"Yes Georgie, I know it took me time but I realized that you are my muse George Weasley I am glad you fell in love with me"
George lovingly smiled at you "I'm glad you fell in love with me"
At that moment Harry realized he lost something special to George. Harry cried himself to sleep that night your dreams haunting him.

JILY AUGUST CHALLENGE | @nah-she-didnt vs @floreatcastellumposts
summer + ok so I almost drowned in the sea whilst body boarding and yeah you saved me but hEY don’t laugh
Read here or on AO3
Lily Of The Sea
Absolutely mental. He must have been absolutely mental to agree to any part of this.
First, there was the fact that he had chosen to spend a week in Wales with Remus when he should have been training for football season. That decision alone would surely ruin his life when he showed up back at school completely out of shape and got booted from the team.
Second, while James liked spending time with one of his best mates, Wales was bloody boring. Remus lived in a charming little cottage with his charming parents in a charming town that had absolutely nothing for a couple of teenage boys to do. There wasn’t even a damn cinema for them to waste away in for the summer. Really, how did people live like this? It was only out of sheer boredom that he’d agreed to spend the day at the beach in the first place. He usually made it a point to avoid the beach at all costs, but these were desperate times indeed.
Herein lay James’ third, and stupidest, decision. He must have been absolutely bloody mental to agree to wade out into the frigid mass of water before him that was the sea.
He turned to throw Remus another reproachful look. “Do I have to do this?”
“Yes!” Remus called over from his spot on the shore. He looked perfectly content, and dry, as he watched James’ slow march to his certain death. “Your fear of open water is, frankly, embarrassing. It’s high time you nipped it in the bud.”
James winced as the water lapped at his shins, blistering his sun-warmed skin with icy cold. “I thought you said you were right behind me?”
Remus grinned. “Oh, you don’t need me. You’re doing brilliantly.” James couldn’t help but notice the mirth in his friend’s voice.
It was true, he did harbor an embarrassing fear of the sea. And why shouldn’t he? The water was so dark you could barely see three inches below the surface. Surely some unknown horror came closer with every step.
James swore loudly. “Rem, I hate this. It’s bloody freezing!”
“It’s the Irish Sea, what do you expect?”
“Damn the Irish then!”
“Mate, you’re English, I don’t think you’re allowed to say that.”
And so, James plowed onward, cursing Remus under his breath. The water was now up to his knees. He could feel the hair on his legs standing at attention as goosebumps emerged from his skin.
However, as he became more and more submerged, something in James began to change. The water was so cold it nearly took his breath away but it also filled him with a new resolve. It wasn’t so bad, really. He could do this.
With that thought, he plunged forward, brought his hands together above his head, and dove straight into an oncoming wave.
He hadn’t been prepared for how quiet underwater was. He was vaguely aware of the wave crashing above his head, but the force of it merely rocked him backward gently. He tried his best to open his eyes but the saltwater stung so fiercely that he shut them tight again. After a few moments of floating beneath the waves, James found his feet below him again and pushed up toward the surface.
He heard Remus’ triumphant whoop as his head broke the surface. He straightened up, embarrassed to find that the water was only about three feet deep, and shook his hair out of his eyes like a dog. “There,” he shouted in Remus’ direction, “I’ve done it. Now, will you come out here with me, please? I don’t need a bloody babysitter.”
Remus sighed loudly. “Yeah alright. Plus, if you drown, I’m sure you’d rather be saved by a fit lifeguard than by me.”
“Too true.”
They spent the next half hour lounging in the water. It was still freezing cold, but James found that it did not bother him so much now. The sun, in a rare moment of favor, had decided to shine bright and warm on the beach today. Remus showed James how to lie back and float so that his top half could be drenched in warmth while his back half rocked with the waves. The effect was actually quite lovely. Perhaps he wasn’t so mental after all.
It was at this very moment that he heard the muffled sound of a whistle.
“Wha-?” James said stupidly as he sat up from his float, pulling his head and ears out of the water so that he could hear properly, “what was that? Remus?”
But Remus was gone. It was only then that James realized how far he had floated from the safety of the beach. He was at least twenty yards away from the shore now, and Remus was not only a few feet away as he previously thought. James whipped his head around frantically. “Remus!”
“Riptide!” Remus’ voice called from somewhere behind him. He turned to see his friend scrambling up the beach through the surf. “Swim parallel to the beach! Now!”
Shit.
This was why he avoided the ocean. What the hell was a riptide? It certainly didn’t sound good.
James flapped his arms wildly as he swam, trying his best to stay parallel to the shore. Now he could feel the pull of the water on his body, coaxing him further and further out into the vast sea. He had to keep swimming. He had to, otherwise how on earth would he be able to murder Remus?
“You’re a bloody bastard, you know that?” James screamed to his friend as he fought against the sea, “You made me come out here!” He was closer to the shore now, almost at the wave breakpoint, only ten yards from where Remus stood.
“I know, I know, keep going!” Remus called, “You’re almost there.”
James fought with all his might to keep swimming. He really was out of shape after all, but he forced the thought from his mind as he struggled. Nearly there.
Finally, he made it back to the shallows. He stood with a great effort and began to stagger drunkenly toward Remus. “I can’t believe you left me out there alone! You smug toss-”
WHAM.
The wave hit James squarely in the back, knocking him hard into the rough, rocky beach.
His cheek caught the edge of a sharp rock. He felt his skin rip and sting fiercely, but he had bigger problems before him. The strength of the retreating wave was dragging him, helplessly, back into the deep. He tried to stand but he had no idea which way was up. The fall had knocked the wind out of him, and for a moment he truly wondered if he was about to drown.
Then, suddenly, there was warmth. Hands - yes, small, warm hands - wrapped protectively around his chest. Then there were arms, a torso pressed against his back. The last thing he felt before everything went dark was the mysterious body pulling him up, up, up.
...
“Is he dead?”
“Don’t be daft.”
“I’m not. Look at him. He looks dead.”
“He’s not dead, you idiot. He’s breathing just fine. What did you leave him out there for? He can barely swim.”
“We were floating! I didn’t know how far he’d drifted.”
The first thing James noticed was the warmth. His whole body tingled with a warm glow in sharp contrast to the freezing water. The water. Where was the water?
James snapped his eyes open. Two blurry faces swam above him. Remus, who looked concerned, but James only had eyes for the other face that hovered above him. A girl’s face. A very pretty girl’s face.
James blinked. “Am I dead?”
“Apparently not,” Remus sighed, “Christ, James, you really know how to make a scene.”
James barely heard this comment. The girl continued to stare at him, her brow furrowed. She didn’t look all that excited to find that he was alive. The more she looked at him, the more James felt that he’d seen this girl somewhere before.
“Who are you?” He whispered up to her. He hadn’t meant to say it, but he still wasn’t sure that she was not a dream.
“Hold still.” She spoke with a practiced, authoritative voice as she turned away from him to rummage through a red bag at her side. She withdrew a white package that she tore open with her teeth, pulled out a wet cloth, and brought it to his face.
James gasped as the cut on his cheek seared with pain. “Ouch! Blimey, what is that?”
“Rubbing alcohol,” she said, again with that focused voice, “don’t want it getting infected. What month is it?”
“Uh-”
“Evans, let him rest,” Remus protested, “he’s just had a shock.”
The girl shook her head. “We’ve got to make sure he’s not concussed. The month, Potter, what month is it?”
“August,” he said stupidly, “it’s August.”
“Who’s the Prime Minister?”
“Wilson.”
“What’s your name?”
“James Potter, what’s yours?”
This seemed to surprise her. The look of concentration slid from her face as she regarded him cautiously. “Lily.”
James squinted up at her with curiosity. “Of the valley?”
Get it together, you prat said a voice in his head, what a stupid thing to-
To his surprise, she smiled, and his heart did a backflip. “Yeah, sure.” Then she shook her head as if to rid herself of the distraction. “You’re going to be fine. Can you stand?”
James nodded and allowed Remus to pull him roughly to his feet. He steadied himself and reached instinctively up to his throbbing cheek. Lily smacked his hand away.
“What did I just say about infection? Blimey, maybe you are concussed.”
James wracked his throbbing brain. Everything was still a bit fuzzy, but now he was sure that he’d seen this girl before. “How did you know my name?”
Lily shot Remus a knowing look. “We go to school together. In Scotland. Remember?”
James felt his cheeks grow hot. That’s how he knew her, he’d seen Remus hanging around with a cute redhead before. “Ah - yeah, ‘course. Sorry I didn’t recognize you.”
She shrugged as she bent down to pack up her first aid kit. “Why would you? I’m not a footballer, not a posh kid, no big deal.”
James frowned. “I have plenty of friends who aren’t footballers or ‘posh kids,’” he said as he made quotation marks with his fingers. It was hard to keep the defensive edge out of his voice. She made him sound quite shallow. He motioned earnestly toward his friend. “Take Remus over here.”
“Thanks, mate.”
“Anytime.”
“Look,” Lily straightened back up, a look of annoyance on her face, “I’m sure you’ve got lots of friends and all, I just meant that we don’t exactly run in the same crowd.”
“But you know Remus. I heard you call him an idiot before.” James glanced at Remus, who looked like he wasn’t sure if he should stay for this tense conversation or disappear back into the safety of the water. “He only lets his very best friends call him that.”
Lily raised her eyebrows. “Really? His friends sound swell.”
Remus, still looking uncomfortable, finally cut in. “We knew each other before school,” he said quickly, looking from James to Lily, “from when we were kids.”
Lily nodded. She was starting to look downright testy now, but James could not for the life of him figure out why. “I used to spend the summers here with my aunt, and we met as kids. We used to go swimming on this beach all the time.” Her face softened at the memory. “It was lovely, actually. I used to love to swim. Haven’t had much time for it lately, until today.”
“Why not?” James persisted. It seemed that every question he asked did nothing more than to elevate her already defensive mood. He couldn’t help it, he had to keep talking to her. Had to keep making her cheeks flush like that.
Lily jerked her head back toward the lifeguard stand. “Don’t have much time, I spent most of my days working here ‘till sunset.”
“Ah,” James pulled what he hoped looked like a sympathetic face, “I see. Not a fun way to spend a holiday, I can imagine.”
Very unfortunately this seemed to be the worst thing he could have possibly said.
“Yeah, well. Some of us have to work to live.” She caught Remus’ eye and said with purpose, “Right. I’ll see you at school, Remus.” And with that, she turned and stalked away, leaving a very stunned James in her wake.
...
“You really cocked that up, huh?.”
“Cheers.”
“No, I mean it. Now she probably thinks you’re some stuck-up, rich brat. Really excellent job on that one.”
“I’m leaving.”
Remus laughed as he grabbed James’ elbow and pulled him back down to sit on the beach. “Christ, you’re touchy today. I’m sorry I almost let you drown, alright?”
James stared out over the glowing pink water. The sea was no less ominous even in the light of the early sunset. He could still feel the waves lapping at his shins, the force of the water smacking his bare back, the pull of the water as he struggled beneath the waves…
He shook his head at the memory. He was safe now, anyway. Thanks to Lily.
“Do you think I’m a stuck up, rich brat?” He refused to look at Remus as he asked the question. Instead, he picked up a large, rough stone and chucked it into the water.
Remus put a hand on his shoulder. “No James, I don’t think that. I think you’re a kind, loyal, and caring rich brat.”
James laughed. “Cheers, mate.”
“Anytime.”
“Give her some time and Lily will see it too. Speaking of...” Remus nodded in the direction behind James.
He turned to see Lily Evans walking toward them. She had pulled a pair of denim shorts over her red lifeguard’s bathing suit, slung a large blue tote bag over her shoulder, and held a half-melted vanilla ice cream cone in each hand.
“Hiya,” she offered as she took a seat next to Remus. James couldn’t tell if it was nerves or embarrassment that kept her from meeting his eyes. “These are for you two. I’m sorry I was a bit harsh before. I mean, you did almost drown, after all.”
James smiled as he accepted the ice cream. “Thanks. And thanks for this, too.”
Remus, however, waved her away as she offered him the cone. “No thanks, I don’t eat dairy.”
James frowned. “You love dairy. I’ve seen you put away an entire wheel of brie in under ten minutes.”
Remus shook his head and stood up, stretching. “No, really. Can’t stand the stuff. I better go find something else more digestible, leave you two alone to talk.”
Lily shot him a dirty look. Remus could not be more transparent if he tried. “I don’t think that’s necessary.”
But Remus was already walking back up the beach. “Too late, see you in a bit!”
“Rem!” James called to his friend, but he merely waved his arm wildly over his head in farewell.
They sat in silence for a few moments with only the crashing of the waves to break the tension. She shifted uncomfortably in her seat. James watched her fidget as he finished his cone. He wondered if it were uncomfortable to sit in those shorts with the back of her legs pressed against the small, jagged rocks that made up the beach. But he couldn’t let himself think for too long about her legs.
“So,” she broke the silence with what sounded like a great effort, “why can’t you swim?”
James sighed. “Oh, let’s just say it’s none of your concern,” he couldn’t bring himself to admit something so embarrassing, “why don’t you like posh kids?”
Lily, to his surprise, laughed. “None of your concern.”
“Are you sure about that? Since I’m apparently an insufferable rich kid maybe I can provide an inside scoop.”
Lily did not laugh this time. Instead, she stared out over the ocean, her vivid green eyes suddenly orange, reflecting the sunset’s light in the choppy water. “I’ve got a friend from school. Well, a friend from home, really. He’s like me, doesn’t have a lot of - of money, and stuff.” She was starting to shift even more now, clearly uncomfortable. James opened his mouth to stop her, but she plowed on. “He made some not-so-nice friends at school. They care a lot about status and all that, so he doesn’t want them to know anything about his home life. Doesn’t want them to know about me.”
James blinked. He’d known this girl only two hours, and he’d seen her in about fourteen different emotional states. He was quite sure he liked them all and wanted to see even more.
“That bullshit,” he said emphatically, “if he doesn’t value you then he’s an idiot. What a prat, giving up a true friend just to social climb.”
Lily smiled sadly. “You’re right, of course. Still hurts, but you’re right.” She shrugged, trying but failing to seem unphased. “Anyway, I think that’s why I was a bit, uh, prickly earlier. Forgive me?”
James just waved his hand dismissively. “Don’t worry about it. I’d be prickly too if it were me. He sounds like a disappointment.” He smiled at shyly, glad that they were approaching something like a friendly conversation, “plus, Remus assured me it wasn’t my finest moment either.”
She smiled again, and another shockwave shot through James’ body. “I forgive you. Friends?”
“Friends with the girl who saved my life? Absolutely.”
Silence fell between them again, but this time the air around them seemed more relaxed. Lily seemed to have found a comfortable position at last. She sat with her legs crossed and her hands placed on the ground behind her, propping her up toward the sea. She had her eyes closed and her head leaned back like she was savoring every roaring crash of waves or whiff of sea air.
“How can you not just love the sea,” she sighed, leaning her head back even further as she sunk into her surroundings, “I don’t know what I’d do without it.”
A few seconds passed before James realized that, at some point, he would have to stop staring at her to answer. “I guess it’s just not for me. You make it look pretty good, though. The sea, I mean.” he said quickly. Very smooth.
Lily, thankfully, ignored his comment. “Tell me the truth,” she turned her head to fix him with an intense look, “why don’t you like the ocean? I shared my trauma, now it’s your turn.”
James sighed. “Alright, I suppose I owe you. I’ve got to warn you, it’s pretty embarrassing.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Try me.”
James paused, trying to decide at the last moment if there was any possible way to tell her the truth and still be respectable in her eyes. There wasn’t.
Finally, he looked at her. “Have you ever seen a movie called ‘Jaws’?”
She pursed her lips, obviously trying not to smile. “Uh, yeah James. I think everyone’s seen that one.”
“Well,” he closed his eyes, preparing for her worst, “I had nightmares for weeks. I don’t know why, but it really got me. I could barely walk through campus puddles on a rainy day. Kept thinking some bloody shark or something was gonna come up, grab my ankle, and pull me in.” He opened one eye to cautiously scan her reaction. “Well? I’m mad, aren’t I?”
He was shocked to find that she was not laughing. Not much, anyway.
“It’s a completely rational fear,” she said thoughtfully, staring out across the blazing water. The sun was almost entirely set now, and soon they’d be engulfed in night. “It’s the fear of the unknown, innit? The anxiety that there’s something unseen lurking around the corner. It’s why people are afraid of spiders and centipedes. All the hidden things that might be there to hurt you. It’s why we wish we could see the future, to be sure that everything is going to turn out alright.”
He knew she was right. He followed her gaze out over the waves. It wasn’t the water that scared him. Wasn’t the searing cold, the slippery rocks underfoot as he plunged further and further into the deep. It was the unknowing, the darkness below him that scared him shitless. “Lily Evans, you are very wise.”
“I know.”
They were silent again, but not uncomfortably so. A strange sense of serenity washed over him. He wasn’t the only one who didn’t know what was out there.
“I could help, you know,” Lily said without looking at him. Instead, she seemed very interested in picking at a hangnail on her thumb.
James raised his eyebrows. “Help me? With swimming?”
“Swimming, the sea, all of it,” she chanced a glance up at him. She really did have the most staggering green eyes he’d ever seen. “I’m pretty good out there, and you clearly need help.”
James laughed. “That bad, am I?”
She grimaced. “Yes, that bad.”
He sighed and glanced back toward the sea. The sun had fully started to set now, and the pink and orange waves looked as menacing as ever. “I dunno… I’m not keen to repeat my near-drowning.”
“Oh, come on,” she winked at him, “a strapping lad like yourself should have no problem swimming in there.”
Strapping? She thought he was strapping?
James forced himself to focus. “The sun’s almost set. What if it gets too dark to see?”
“So?” She pushed herself to her feet, then offered his hand to pull him up. “You can’t see through the water anyway. What’s a little more unknown going to hurt?”
She helped pull him to his feet then began unbuttoning her shorts. James had the self-control to look away, though his hands shook just a bit as he removed his own t-shirt. Together, fully outfitted in their swimsuits, they marched toward the now-purple water.
“Don’t worry, we’ll go slow,” she murmured as they reached the shoreline, “I’ll hold your hand through the whole thing.”
James smirked, “Figuratively, of course.”
As if to spite him, she grabbed his hand and squeezed hard. With a jolt, James remembered that very hand on his chest not two hours ago, pulling him up and out of the same water they charged into now.
“The trick,” Lily said decisively as she stared out at the breaking waves, “is to choose the right moment. You have to wade in past the break line between waves. If you time it wrong, you get creamed. That was your problem last time.”
“Thanks for the reminder.”
“No problem. Ready?”
“Actually,” James hastened, suddenly feeling sick. He wanted to drop her hand and run back, but he found that his skin felt glued to hers. “I think not. Thanks for the offer, but I’m fine being a coward for the rest of my life.”
“Not a chance!” She cried, gesturing out over the water, “Look how far you’ve come! You can’t go back now. I’m not going to let you drown.”
James tried to shoot her with a mischievous grin, but he knew it more closely resembled a grimace. “Promise?”
“Promise. Go!”
And so, Lily pulling at his hand, they sprinted out into the shallows together. The remains of the previous wave rushed merrily alongside their feet and legs as they sprinted into the water. James did not stop running until he could feel the water at his collar bones, his feet skimming the bottom of the seafloor. He felt around with his toes. No sharks or monsters as far as he could feel.
“See?” Lily laughed and splashed him a bit with water, “it’s not so bad. Jump!”
He turned to look just in time. A wave was coming at them fast. He barely had time to push off the ground to sail over it. The two of them soared through the water, over the wave, and back down again as it crashed onto the shore behind them. He laughed with glee and disbelief. His lungs felt icy cold as he gulped down air to keep himself from panicking. It felt like flying, and James suspected he’d been meant to fly all his life. This was easy. This was wonderful.
Suddenly, a wave larger than the rest descended upon them. “Alright, James,” came Lily’s confident voice as she squeezed his hand tighter, “we have to go under this one, alright?”
“What?” He just managed to yell before she pulled him under the wave. Again, there was that eerie stillness, only this time James wasn’t alone in the silence. Lily’s hand was still warm and sure in his own.
And so they flew through the water, dodging and riding and floating over the waves. It was exhausting work which was not made any easier by their fits of laughter every time the other received a faceful of icy water. Finally, when the sky had turned a deep navy, they dragged each other back out of the surf and onto the shore.
Brilliantly illuminated stars scattered across the night sky as they threw themselves back down on the beach. Lily reached into her large tote and produced a beach towel that they shared, taking turns to wipe the saltwater from their eyes and faces. They had barely talked the whole time they swam, just laughed, and gasped for air.
“See?” Lily sighed as she flopped back onto the beach towel, “I told you it’s lovely out there.”
“I stand corrected,” James said as he laid down next to her. He could see her chest and stomach rise and fall with the effort of breathing. “You were an excellent teacher. You’re not Lily of the valley, you’re Lily of the sea.”
She looked at him with a look that he’d come to learn meant she was about to make fun of him. “Have you been thinking of that line the whole time?”
“No!” James said with mock indignation, “No, it’s true. You made me see what all the fuss is about. Thank you.”
Lily grinned at him. She turned onto her side to face him, her head resting on her outstretched arm. He could see her freckles even in the dim light from the stars. He hardly stopped to think before he leaned in, his mouth inches from her own. He could feel her breath, still coming in sharp gasps, against his lips. “Do you think it would be alright if I kissed you?”
She smiled, and his whole body lit on fire. “I’m going to insist that you do, Potter.”
Her lips tasted like the sea. Her hair, when he took the back of her neck into his hand, was coarse and tangled from their swim. The shock of her warm hands on his cold, bare chest nearly caused him to cry out, and she smiled into him. God, she knew exactly what she was doing to him.
It was impossible to know how long they stayed entwined in one another. James had lost all sense of time and space. All he knew was Lily. He knew he could stay like this forever and be just fine.
Unfortunately, Remus had other plans.
“OI!” Came the shout from the darkness. Lily and James jumped apart in alarm. Remus stood a ways up the beach with his arms crossed. It was hard to tell in the dark, but James would bet anything that he was smirking. “You’re not snogging my best mate down there, are you?”
“No!” cried James and Lily in unison.
“That’s what I thought. I hate to break up the party, but James, we’ve got to move. Mum will flip if we get the car back late.”
James nodded. It was a horrible thought, leaving Lily, but he’d seen Remus’ sweet-tempered mum angry only once before. He didn’t wish to repeat the experience.
“I’ve got to run,” he whispered apologetically to Lily. He grabbed her hand in the darkness, and for a moment they could have been back in the water, soaring over waves together. “I’ve got a few more days in town, then back to school. Can I meet you here again tomorrow?”
Lily beamed at him. “That sounds lovely. Maybe at school I’ll even allow you to be seen with me.”
He laughed, then kissed her once more. Remus’ exaggerated cough told him that it was, really, now time to go. “Do you need a ride home?”
She shook her head. “I’ve got my bike. See you tomorrow, then.”
His chest felt like it was fit to burst. They could do this all again tomorrow.
“See you then, Lily of the sea.”
He turned before he could see her roll her eyes again and made his way up the beach toward Remus. He put his hands in his pockets and tried his hardest to stifle the grin that was permanently etched upon his face.
Perhaps he wasn’t so mental after all.

Tory Ranks the HP Films! [review]
Hi everybody! So I was chatting with a good friend of mine the other day about our favorite films in the Harry Potter series, and...well, the whole discussion got me thinking, so I decided to jot down my personal rankings!
I’ll just discuss the eight films based on the original books for this, but if you want my thoughts on the Fantastic Beasts series so far, you can read this FB-centric response and this review for CoG! These rankings are unique to me, but will be affected both by how much I personally enjoy the movie as well as how well it adapted its respective book. Hope you enjoy -- if you want, feel free to like and reblog, and of course reply/reblog with your own thoughts about the HP films!
Tumblr media
8) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Tumblr media
I’ll be honest, I was torn between this film and the one just before it as my personal worst, but in the end, I had to acknowledge that this one, out of all of the films, was just the least interesting of the lot, not just from a story perspective but also in the visuals and music. Everything was so gray and murky and dark: the only faintly creative visuals I really remember from this film were the inky effects in the Pensieve scenes (which didn’t match up with the established continuity of previous Pensive scenes) and the juxtaposition of a bird’s cage in the corner of a shot where Draco is walking down the hallway, and the only music track I remember liking at all was the choral piece In Noctem. Plus the plot itself was pretty tedious, as the filmmakers apparently decided that the book’s romantic side-stories were more worthy of focus than the main villain’s entire backstory. I mean, come on -- Harry making goo-goo eyes at Ginny and Ron being a complete idiot when it comes to the girls in his life is somehow more interesting than Dumbledore and Harry learning about the Gaunt family, Tom Riddle’s past as a neglected, but vindictive bully, and Riddle turning objects that meant something to him into Horcruxes, which sets up the Golden Trio’s quest to find them in the next book/movie? Good call on that one. Speaking of Riddle, the two new actors that were cast to portray him in this movie are also easily the worst performers in the entire series, and the completely unsubtle, black-and-white characterization of Riddle in the script didn’t do them any favors. After how much Voldemort was built up in the films, Riddle being so ridiculously obvious in how evil he is makes everyone around him (like Dumbledore and Slughorn) look like an idiot for not seeing he was bad news from the start. This film makes me a lot less angry than the #7 slot, partly because HBP is my least favorite of the books, but it also prompts just about no positive feelings either, and if there’s anything Harry Potter has never been, it’s “boring.”
7) Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Tumblr media
*dodges knives* LOOK. I know this is a lot of people’s favorite HP film, and I understand why. From a cinematography perspective, it’s easily one of the best. It’s very pretty to look at. The shot composition is excellent. The visuals are creative and striking. But all of that beauty is at the cost of the story and characters. Not only does Hermione become even more of an idealized Action Girl, losing even more of her wonderful, three-dimensional book characterization and flaws -- not only does the film break away from every bit of continuity established from the previous installments or even within its own film, from changing the layout of Hogwarts and the students’ uniforms to having Harry constantly light up his wand with magic no problem only ONE SCENE before getting punished for using magic outside of school -- not only does it make no sense unless you’ve read the book, given that the script just assumes that you’ll remember details like Lupin and Snape having seen the Marauder’s Map, which explains how they knew Sirius and the Golden Trio were in the Shrieking Shack -- not only does it add things that I don’t like and really don’t think fit in the established Wizarding World like the shrunken heads and a slide projector being used in Snape’s DADA class -- not only did this film depict its characters blatantly showing off their supposedly “secret” magical artifacts with no repercussions, such as Harry under his Invisibility Cloak stealing a lollypop from Neville and whamming through a crowd of people and Hermione not even trying to hide the Time Turner around her neck -- not only did Ron lose one of his best scenes in the entire series, where he stands on his broken leg yelling at Sirius that he’d have to kill him and Hermione to get to Harry, and was downgraded to the point that he pretty much became dead weight -- not only did Lupin’s werewolf form look more like a half-bald monkey than the hulking, terrifying mass I’d wanted to see -- not only did Lupin and Sirius talk to Harry about Lily almost exclusively and barely mention their best friend James -- not only was everything Crookshanks did except him chasing Scabbers left out -- not only did the script never explain that Lupin, Pettigrew, Sirius, and James were the Marauders and the reason behind the pen-names -- not only did the film originally MISSPELL “MOONY” WHEN IT WAS WRITTEN DOWN IN THE FRIGGIN’ BOOK -- but this film ruined the best part of the entire story. The descent into the Shrieking Shack and the revelation of who really betrayed the Potters took three whole chapters to unravel because of how much information was revealed and how many emotions were packed into it...yet the film decided to spend less than TEN MINUTES on that three-chapter-long plot twist. TEN. And most of the exposition dialogue was shouted haphazardly across the room in about five minutes of that time. It’s honestly little wonder to me that director Alfonso Cuaron originally hadn’t wanted to read the book before making the film and had to be convinced to do so -- he clearly was more interested in putting his own stamp on the story than respecting what was already there in the books or even in the previous films, and although yes, the darker tone and more unique visual style did help the series in the long run, I just wish that it hadn’t been done in the adaptation of my favorite book in the series. Azkaban deserved a more faithful adaptation than this.
6) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Tumblr media
In a way I almost feel bad for the filmmakers trying to adapt this book. GoF is the longest in the entire series and arguably has the most subplots and tiny important details casually slipped into the text out of all of them, which would be difficult to adapt in a three-act feature film. I can’t help but feel it should’ve gotten the halfsies treatment the way Hallows did, given that it would’ve been difficult to fit every little important thing into one movie, even a long one. That being said, though...yeah, this film really is incoherent unless you’ve read the books. How do you even try to tell Goblet’s story if you’re going to cut out all of the Crouch family’s backstory? Answer: by revealing the twist ending in the first ten minutes by showing Crouch, Jr. is alive and turning him into an uninteresting, one-dimensional character, I guess. David Tenant is a wonderful actor and he could’ve been a wonderful Crouch, Jr., but in this adaptation he had just about nothing to work with. Then of course they also cut out Winky, Dobby, Hermione’s SPEW movement, the Quidditch World Cup game, Bertha Jorkins, Ludo Bagman, Percy Weasley joining the Ministry, the Weasley twins and Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes, Rita Skeeter getting her comeuppance, and Crouch, Jr. getting Kissed by dementors before Fudge could hear his testimony about Voldemort’s return. I also wish they hadn’t turned Cedric, Viktor, and Fleur into such one-note, one-dimensional characters either -- Robert Pattinson got the most to work with out of the three actors, but the characters still seem very shallow compared to their book-originals, and considering Viktor and Fleur get no further development in later films, their characters pretty much start and end with the little material their actors get in this movie. Even Voldemort’s depiction I’m somewhat torn about: I like Ralph Fiennes as an actor, but I had sort of hoped he’d look a little scarier and that he’d have red eyes the way he had when he was attached to Quirrel’s head in Sorcerer/Philosopher and as described in the book. As much as I sympathize with how difficult the task was to adapt this story, Warner Bros. still could’ve made a longer movie and kept in more of the stuff needed to understand what was going on. Still, there are some good visuals in this film and I like a lot of the new music tracks, too.
5) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
Tumblr media
The Hallows films overall I sort of just see as “okay,” mainly because they and Prince’s adaptation are so dark that at some points I think they forget what made the stories so likable in the first place -- namely, the characters. Sure, we can’t have as much humor here, but where’s the love? Where are the distinct personalities, where’s the friendship? And really, one of the few answers this film gave was in that OOC Harmione dance scene, which...yeah, not only did it have no romantic chemistry (which I suppose I should be glad of, as that would be even more OOC than the scene already is), but it also had very little friendship chemistry too. It was just awkward and stilted to watch. Even Ron’s return wasn’t as strong because the film adaptations went so far out of their way to marginalize Ron and not make him an important part of the trio...so yeah, contrasted to the book where Harry and Hermione mourned Ron’s absence, the awkward dance scene attempting joy and failing miserably just falls even more flat. There are some good moments, like Luna and Harry interacting at the wedding and the break-in at the Ministry, and there’s a lot less stuff cut from this film than in others, but there’s also a lot less that I can say I loved in this film than in others.
4) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Tumblr media
Part 2 is pretty even with Part 1 for me, as it doesn’t cut as much out but also left a lot to be desired. Because of the lack of explanation about what things Voldemort would turn his Horcruxes into, Harry has to rely solely on deux-ex-machina visions to tell him what to do next, Harry breaking the Elder Wand felt like such a cop-out, and the Battle of Hogwarts, although not bad exactly, really never showed off the scale of the damage and loss the way it could’ve. Fred’s death isn’t even given its proper screen time! But at the same time, I found more memorable scenes in this movie -- the Room of Requirement confrontation, McGonagall taking charge before the Battle of Hogwarts, the ending at Platform 9 3/4 that actually used the Leaving Hogwarts track from the first movie the way I’d dreamed that they would when I first read the book -- and of course every moment of Alan Rickman as Severus Snape. Yes, Rickman portrayed Snape as a much more likable, much less gray character than he was in the books, but he was still wonderful to watch every second he was on screen.
3) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone
Tumblr media
I acknowledge nostalgia might play more of a role in my judgement of the first two films, given that I was a young teenager when they first came out...but I’m sorry, aesthetically, Columbus’s films were the most true to their source material. The darkness didn’t really start in the books until GoF, and since Cuaron jumped the gun on the darkness in Azkaban, we lost that gradual fading of the light from the original novels. And really, the Wizarding World was charming! It still is! And with the departure of Columbus, we kind of lost that charm in future films, even during the parts that were supposed to be less dark and gritty. We never got it back, and yes, one could see that as somewhat reminiscent of childhood innocence -- but I disagree, charm can be appreciated at any age. Even in my darkest days, I still could appreciate it. If anything, charm in the midst of despair and gloom became all the more precious. But regardless...Sorcerer/Philosopher is one of the most true to its subject matter -- it really does depict things almost exactly the way I’d imagined them while reading the book. The score John Williams wrote for the first two films in particular made everything feel just as magical as when I was first reading the first two books, and as the films went on, we lost that recurring score that favored the reuse of certain themes to instill various emotions: instead we just got individual themes for each film that were rarely used outside of that particular film. But I acknowledge Sorcerer/Philosopher doesn’t take nearly enough risks, the details cut so as to compress scenes sometimes create plot holes (like Snape protecting the Stone and supposedly bullying Quirrell to find out how to get past his defense, even though both their challenges were not included in the film), the CGI is pretty outdated, and a lot of the child actors were at the beginning of their learning curve. Really, the only stand-out performances among the child actors in my opinion were Tom Felton and Rupert Grint -- Dan had his moments, but Emma and a lot of the more minor actors like Devon Murray as Seamus at points sounded like they were acting in a school play. And when you placed those kids alongside great adult actors like Robbie Coltrane and Richard Harris, it could be a bit jarring. Still, I’d be lying if I said I don’t really enjoy watching this movie, almost as much as I did when I watched it as a kid so many times that after a while I could recite the entire script from memory.
2) Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Tumblr media
I was fortunate enough to see this film opening night with my mum and best friend at the time, and really, Chamber just built on Sorcerer/Philosopher’s cheesy yet charming, book-loyal formula. Like the previous film, there are some important details cut and not that many risks taken from a visual or film-making perspective and the CGI often doesn’t look that great (Dobby in particular hasn’t aged that well), plus some of the scenes aren’t that well-directed (i.e. the fight between the Gryffindor and Slytherin Quidditch teams lacked any real anger or energy, and even the Dueling Club scene was oddly slow and lacked excitement)...but even so, I think the child performances are better here, and we got a lot more scenes with excellent adult actors like Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy, Julie Walters as Molly Weasley, and Kenneth Branagh as Lockhart. I also laugh a lot watching this one! Lockhart gets a lot of his great, funny lines from the book, but young Rupert Grint also shows a great talent for comedy that, I must be honest, is kind of lost after Chamber, as he becomes less of a distinct character who happens to say funny things and more of just a wimpy, tag-along sidekick who’s often made the butt of a joke. Even now, my mum and I smile at the memory of watching the film in theaters and laughing and cheering with the rest of the audience when Lockhart cries, “Amazing! This is just like MAGIC!”
1) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Tumblr media
This film adaptation is based off my second favorite book in the series, and as much as it cut from that book, I think it overall captured the spirit of the book the best out of the series while also making a visually distinctive film. Yes, it cut out Marietta Edgecombe and the moral grayness her inclusion represented, Sirius’s passive-aggressiveness, pettiness, and cruelty toward Kreacher and the depth that it gave him as a flawed father figure, Harry’s lashing out at Dumbledore and how real it made both Sirius’s loss and Harry’s grief, Percy’s alienation of his family and the exploration of the cost of standing by one’s ideals, Neville and his family at St. Mungo’s and the pathos and complexity it gave his character, Umbridge running Hagrid out of Hogwarts and McGonagall being injured and how much that cut Harry off from the Order, and Umbridge’s revelation that she’d sent the dementors after Harry and how neatly it tied up all the loose ends. But at the same time, I hated Umbridge in this film just as much as I did in the books. I felt the sorrow of Sirius’s loss just as much as I did in the books. I felt the satisfaction at seeing Neville grow through joining the D.A. and becoming a more three-dimensional, heroic character despite his shortcomings just as I did in the books. I felt for Trelawney when she was being forcibly evicted from Hogwarts just as much as I had in the books. I felt the triumph of the Weasley twins’ rebellion against Umbridge just as much as I did in the books. I felt the camaraderie of Dumbledore’s Army just as much as I did in the books. I felt the love that Harry had for his friends and believed in both his hopelessness and his desire to fight for them just as much as I did in the books. And yet there were also film-only additions that I really liked -- the emphasis on Harry’s friends being the reason he resists Voldemort’s control, the montage of Umbridge sinking her Inquisitorial claws into Hogwarts, the music written to accompany the scenes at the Ministry and featuring Umbridge, Sirius punching Lucius Malfoy in the face and calling Harry “James” by accident. Even in a visual sense, it wasn’t too dark and gritty, but not too rosy and colorful either. Yes, this film had dark moments, but it never lost sight of what the original book series was about -- not the doom and gloom, not the action and thrills, not the drama and intrigue, not even the flights of fancy, but the love. What even are our heroes fighting for, if not the ones and things they love? Why do we even care? Why would we even watch any of these films at all, if not because of the love? In Order, I never forgot what Harry was fighting for. It balanced out the doubt and fear with kinship and nobility, just as I felt the books always had and the films often didn’t. So as many important details are shaved off, it at least still felt like Harry Potter. Not perfect, but hey, what adaptation is?

The Oath Part 8
OOPS THERE IS SMUT on A03 AND FFN
Sirius drags James out of the apartment Monday around noon. “I can't stand the sight of you pacing anymore, let's go do something,” he orders and James obliges.
He’s got at least 8 hours until his family is here. Lily promised to try and leave midday but wasn’t sure how quickly they would be able to make their excuses and leave.
They go to the mall. Which is weird, still. James doesn’t understand why exactly he and Sirius enjoy walking around the mall so much. Maybe it is just to be somewhere so muggle, so normal and removed from the war. It’s another world- all of America is but this in particular just seems to sooth them both.
They decide to see a movie. Edward Scissorhands. Again. Sirius can’t stop talking about it and James enjoyed it the first two times so he figures he can manage. He hopes it will get his mind off of the countdown he has going and will help push the anxiety away.
James falls asleep in the movie. He always does. Maybe Sirius only drags him there to make him sleep. Something about the sound of the scissors lets him relax. He’s jolted awake by Sirius flicking his ear. “Lets go”
They spend a few more hours walking around the mall. Sirius spends an obscene amount of money on more presents for Harry and James just rolls his eyes as he always does.
They discuss dinner and James is stuck by another set of nerves. He doesn’t have a clue what Harry likes to eat. What if they became vegan or something? Do vegans eat cheese? Sirius is insistent on pizza but James begs him to wait until Lily and Harry are there and Sirius relents.
They return to the flat and Sirius convinces James that he should play cards to keep from pacing. They do. For two hours, James tries and tries to not stare at the clock as they play rounds of gin rummy. Sirius is kicking his ass.
At 7pm, James is in the kitchen when they hear it. A loud squealing engine pulling into their complex. James ignores it, knowing their neighbors have loud noises and goes back to mixing his drink. He’s run to the window too many times on false alarms tonight.
Sirius has gotten wound tighter and tighter with waiting and he rushed to the window. James is expecting disappointment when he hears Sirius yell, “DAMN EVANS- that car is a piece of shit.”
He doesn’t think before rushing out of the flat. He runs out the door, not minding to close or lock it or even tell Sirius where he is going.
He is down the steps in a flash. He rushes past Ms. Berry (who normally he would spend several moments speaking to) and opens the door that leads outside.
He gets to the sidewalk and stops. There she is. She’s scolding Sirius on “language” but she’s smiling through her tears and James can’t breathe. His chest is tight and he can’t even-
WHAM! Something slams into him. On instinct he goes for his wand, which he left upstairs.
He looks down and- it’s Harry. His son. Harry is clinging to him and he is standing there like an idiot. James remembers himself and embraces him.
“Dad!” Harry exclaims when they seperate and James can’t stop the tears, “Hi Harry!”
“Mom is almost out of gas. The light came on and EVERYTHING but she said we could make it- that she didn’t want to stop again.”
James smiles and tells him, “I’m glad you didn’t stop...I couldn’t wait much longer”
And with this he looks to Lily again and she is watching them with such fondness and love his heart clenches again. Maybe they will be alright.
With a shaky breath, Lily scolds Harry as she crosses to them, “You weren’t supposed to tell about the gas, Harry...that was our secret. Now let me get in there.”
She is inches from him. And he feels like sixth year when he was afraid to reach for her hand. He does now though. He wants to touch every inch of her. Embrace her and convince himself that she is real. They survived and she is real and they will be alright.
He reaches for her right hand and then her left. She gives him a squeeze and he exhales a breath he didn’t know he was holding. They close the distance between them and Lily settles her head on his shoulder. He forgot how it felt when they stood like this.
Sirius would always tease them for “Doing that weird horse thing” but it was his favorite way to be with Lily. Now though…. he drops her hands and pulls her close to him. Her arms twine around his neck and he breathes in her scent. Her hands are in his hair and he can’t help the smile that comes through the tears. “Happy to see me, Potter?” she asks and her voice is thick. “You have no idea, Lily?” And then they are kissing. He has kissed Lily thousands of time. But this kiss, familiar and unfamiliar and full of everything he’s missed for ten years- will be hard to beat. They stare at each other for a moment and they’re kissing again and James is ready to take Lily on the sidewalk when they’re interrupted.
“Are they always this gross?” Harry is asking and the response comes from Sirius, “Lots of the time, mate, but I think we can cut them a little bit of slack. This time.”
Harry and Sirius are standing in identical poses with faces of disgust and arms folded over their chests. Lily flushes red, just like the time they were caught after the final quidditch match sixth year. She pulls away but doesn’t stop touching James, she is holding on to his hand firmly and gives Sirius and awkward one armed hug but James doesn’t want to let her go either.
Harry takes his other hand and asks, “I’m hungry. What's for dinner?”
They unpack Lily and Harry’s essentials for their stay and get them settled in. The discussion then turns to their plans for the evening. Pizza, it seems is a good choice. Sirius offers to take Harry to pick up the pizza and to go by Blockbuster to pick a movie. Harry asks if they’re calling the pizza in before they leave and Sirius tells him, “Nah- let's see what looks good when we get there.”
As they’re planning the evening, James cant stop touching Lily, her hands, the small of her back and he hopes it isn’t noticeable. Lily’s hands wander in a similar way. They’re telling Sirius and Harry goodbye and she only lets go of James to kiss the top of Harry’s cheek and to tell both of them to be good.
“You be good too,” Sirius tells them with a very knowing wink and closes the door behind them. As soon as the door clicks shut, Lily locks it behind them and then her lips are on James’.
They are frantic, hands everywhere. James can’t get enough of her. He needs to see her, needs to feel her. Lily, it seems feels the same. Lily is unbuttoning his shirt when they slam into the counter. Breathless, she pulls away . She takes a few steps back and takes her own shirt off. She is grinning at him as she unhooks her bra from behind and lets it fall to the floor. James has always loved Lily’s breasts. He admires the view for a few moments before he is touching them. His hands, his lips, his tongue and his teeth all admire the beauty that are Lily’s breasts. He has her pressed against the refrigerator now and her hands are everywhere. He is kissing his way up her neck when her hands reach his trousers and unbuckle his belt. His trousers fall to the ground and James presses against her, Lily’s hands are against his back and she is pressing him closer as she hooks her leg around his waist. He kisses her fiercely and slides his hand up her thigh. His fingers drift across her knickers, he finds her wet and wanting and he almost cums into his pants right then. But he clears his mind and moves the knickers to the side he teases her with his index finger and presses his thumb against her clit. Lily breaks the kiss and gives a shaky breath. James kisses her neck and plunges another finger into her and asks, “Happy to see me Potter?”
Her voice is low when she answers, “If you don’t fuck me soon James I’m going to-”
He doesn’t let her finish the sentence. He silences her with a kiss and spins them so they’re back against the counter. They break apart and shed their remaining clothing. James kisses Lily as she settles onto the counter. She wraps her legs tightly around him and James slowly enters her. It takes them a few moments to find and remember their rhythm but once they do James is reminded why they spent so many days doing exactly this. She is biting his earlobe and gasping his name when he finally comes undone.
They manage two more rounds before Sirius and Harry return two hours later. They’d been talking on the couch when Lily gave James a look and then he just had to taste her. And then Lily had to ride him on the floor.
They’d been behaving in the shower until Lily asked about a particular scar and after James told her the story she had to kiss it better. And then the rest of it. The sex is frantic and quick and real and James feels like a teenager again.
Sirius and Harry return with two pizzas and several movie selections. He apologizes for how long it took but tells Lily and James that traffic was terrible. This is accompanied with a wink and several thinly veiled innuendos throughout the evening that James prays Harry can’t pick up on.
They stay up late through the night watching movies and talking. It feels like a family. James realizes that the feeling he can’t quite put his finger on is contentment. He hasn’t felt that in a long time. At some point, Harry falls asleep and they carry him to his room. James tucks his son in and kisses his forehead for the first time in ten years. And he’ll be damned if anyone tries to seperate them again.
Once Harry is in bed, they retreat to their bedroom. This time they take their time. James worships every inch of Lily and she worships every inch of him. Their kisses are slow and tentative. James feels like he is in confession and Lily is purging him of all his sins. His only goal is her pleasure and she is of a similar mind. Everything is delicate. Her hands and fingers brush lightly and James thinks her might burst from the love of this woman. Each thrust is a promise “I won’t lose you again”. They both peak at the same moment and James muffles her cries with a kiss.

Last Christmas
This story is fully inspired by my favourite Christmas song ever which is Last Christmas by Wham, I just love it so much.
Takes place a year after finishing Hogwarts. Let's just imagine that everything was right and no war happened.
Tumblr media
This party kinda sucked, well, at least you thought so. You were usually more than up for any party action but today just weren't in the right mood. It was too crowded for your liking, you prefered hanging out only with your close friends. Alcohol was too strong — "the best muggle thing I've had so far in my entire life", as said by James. "Besides my beautiful and gorgeous wife, of course" he then added, pinched by Lily afterwards. And plus, you barely knew anybody, which was quite surprising as at Potter's Christmas party all faces were expected to be familiar. That was most probably connected with their recent honeymoon, you thought, when they went to America and made what felt like thousands of new friends. You have met some of them because you visited Lily and James quite often but somehow new people always appeared at their place.
Unable to recognise anyone around you, you made your way to the nearest table and grabbed a few cookies. You were supposed to have fun after all, and you tried, eating your boredom away. To be fair, cookies were really good, Lily has always loved baking and did it perfectly without any magic used. A warm white chocolate drink with marshmallows, which you found at another table, was also something that made you a little bit happier and not so eager to leave. You took a sip from a cute snowman-like mug and a smile appeared on your lips. Maybe the party wasn't so bad as you first thought.
"No, nevermind," you mumbled to yourself, putting the mug down and rolling your eyes. You simply couldn't help it when you saw someone, two someones actually, who at the meantime were being hugged by a hosting this party couple
"I should've expected them," you mumbled again, closing your eyes so that you wouldn't see those happy faces. If this party could've possibly get any worse, now was the moment.
When you opened your eyes again, you were met by Lily's guilty look from afar. She knew it very well that you wouldn't like these two coming, she knew you would be upset — and yet invited them! You couldn't blame her though, James probably insisted on inviting his best friend, and how on Earth could this friend come without his significant one, right?
And still you were almost angry, clenching your jaw so hard it was probably able to break. Sirius Black and his girlfriend were no good news at all.
Thankfully they disappeared in a crowd immidiately and you heaved a relieved sigh. Maybe if they won't come up to you, it would be possible for you to keep living your normal life, standing in the kitchen and drinking white hot chocolate.
"Hey, Y/N, I'm terribly sorry for that."
You heard Lily's voice from your back and turned around to face her. She looked sad and you assumed it was because of you.
"No, Lily, no need to be so," you said, leaning on the bar counter. "I completely understand."
"No, we shouldn't have invited them," Lily insisted, frowning. "We could've celebrate with them separately. I forgot..."
"Stop apologising," you interrupted her, placing your hand on her shoulder. "You don't have to act impolitely towards your friends because of me."
"How are you so kind to?" Lily asked. "I would've gone mad if at your party you invited that Barry from the fifth year, you remember how badly..."
"I do, I do remember," you merely laughed. "But the difference is that he's not my friend, Lils, and I'd obviously never consider inviting him."
"Are you sure everything's alright?" the girl asked, glancing behind your back. You turned your head to see what she was looking at and saw Sirius and his blonde dancing. You pursed your lips but gave Lily a reassuring smile.
"Yeah, it's alright," you nodded. "I don't really care anymore, you know."
"So you won't have any problems with it?" doubtfully asked Lily, obviously believing not a single word of yours.
"I won't."
"I'll go then," she replied, "Call for me if, um, anything happens."
And so she went away, leaving you all alone with your rather unpleasant thoughts.
When you thought that your day had already been ruined enough, you noticed that Sirius and — "what's her name again? Oh god I always forget" — Laura were finished with a tango and headed straight to the place you were at. "Shit," you thought, looking away and trying to act like they weren't any near your interest.
The couple approached and you heard Laura laughing out loud. Siruis' right hand was on her waist and and in the left one he was holding a glass of that super strong drink everyone went crazy about tonight. He was grinning but as soon as he saw you this grin disappeared. He stopped, turned aroung slightly to see you better. You shivered under his attentive look.
"And who do we have here?" he said in a mocking voice, but his eyes still studied you from the bottom to the top. "Miss Gloomy is enjoying herself. Hi, Miss Gloomy."
Laura chuckled loudly, causing a look of disgust from you which you tried to hide but Sirius noticed it anyway. He raised his eyebrow and let a smirk hit his lips.
"Nice to see you, Miss Gloomy," he continued, not waiting for your answer.
"Can't say the same, but you're already here," you replied, "so hello."
"Isn't it just rude, Laura, that she's not happy to see her old friend at all?" Sirius pretended to direct this question to his girlfriend, but looked still at you.
"It is indeed," the girl said, giggling and covering her mouth with her hand, which almost caused you throwing up. How overly sweet was this Laura. "Hey, Y/N, he's just trying to talk."
Laura wasn't introduced to anything that happened between you and Sirius last year. She didn't know why you and him weren't able to interact like normal human beings, that's why you couldn't really blame her on her naive words.
"Well, I don't want to," you answered, deciding it would be better now to leave before you cry right in front of Sirius and his girlfriend and totally humilate yourself.
"That's a pity, because I actually wanted to have a quick word with you outside!" Sirius exclaimed, taking his hand off Laura's waist and quickly finishing a glass of his drink. "Laura, babe, won't you mind?"
She didn't. Sirius made an inviting gesture and headed to the front door of the house. Nothing was left for you to do but follow him.
You came out of the house and couldn't help but smile at the sight of huge snowflakes falling down from the dark grey sky. It was freezing cold and you shivered, regretting not taking your coat with you. It was only a jumper you were wearing, it was warm but not enough.
"So... what do you want to talk about?" You asked, energetically stroking your arms in order to get at least a bit warmer.
"Nothing special," said Sirius, turning to you. "Just wanted to have a chat without Laura. How you've been lately?"
"Oh, really? It's cold out here and you pulled me outside just to ask how I am?"
"Yeah, I guess so."
"Are you joking?"
"Not really."
And here he was, the exact same Sirius you knew since your first year at Hogwarts.
"You're not happy to see me, right?" he asked.
"Is it too easy to see?" you sarcastically answered — well, trying to be sarcastic — and rolled your eyes.
"It is, believe it or not," Sirius replied in the same tone.
"Not particularly you."
This wasn't supposed to be heard but seemed like Sirius did anyway. A very uncomfortable silence followed and you wanted nothing but to disappear right now. Sirius was staring at you with an expression unable to be read correctly.
"I tried, remember?" he finally uttered after what felt like an eternity. "Last Christmas I gave you my whole heart and more, didn't I?" He sounded so quiet that you needed to come even closer to hear him properly.
"You did," you whispered, tears starting to tickle your eyes.
"And you also remember what happened the very next day?" Sirius asked with a plain face and no warmth in his eyes whatsoever.
"I do," you admitted, recalling the memory of you rejecting him. You were scared of your feelings back then so it seemed like the only logical way to deal with them. Now you regretted it with all your heart. Just like every single day since that happened. "I... I gave it away."
"It could've been you now with me," Sirius answered, his look still cold. "Do you even realise what have you done to me that day?"
"I didn't mean to..."
"And I reckon you did." Sirius' voice was trembling now and you weren't able to hold tears anymore. "I was a man undercover till last Christmas. And you tore me apart. Completely."
"But you didn't let me explain!" you exclaimed desperately but your voice broke down. "I thought you weren't sincere," you finished in a whisper.
"I wrapped up a present and sent it to you."
You remembered. It was a note there saying...
"I love you." You were still whispering, tears now running down your cheeks.
"Yes. I wrote it. And I meant it, Y/N." Sirius' voice was sad now. "I was as sincere as I've never been with anyone before. Now though I know what a fool I've been."
"I was scared of my feelings, Sirius, we were friends and I didn't know if they were right," you answered, not knowing what words to choose.
Sirius looked away and you saw a steam coming from his mouth.
"My god!" he exclaimed. "I thought you were someone to rely on. How stupid I was!"
Nothing was worse than hearing those words. You were extremely cold by that time, tears on your cheeks were slowly turning into pieces of ice and Sirius' disappointment didn't help at all.
"I guess for you I was just a shoulder to cry on," he added, smiling unhappily. You shook your head attempting to deny his statement but he wasn't looking at you and it wouldn't work anyway.
Silence appeared again as you watched more and more snowflakes falling down to the ground and covering it completely. No wind was blowing but you were still shivering from the coldness. It was winter after all and going outside in just a jumper, although warm, wasn't the best idea.
"I'm going to propose to Laura," said Sirius, breaking the quietness. "Tomorrow."
It was the last twist of a knife in your heart. You just bursted into tears, covering your face with your hands which felt like pure steel. You didn't make any sound though — just a silent cry of despair. A year passed by and you never felt so out of hope than now. You also haven't seen Sirius at any point this year and here he was, tearing you apart by just a few words.
Apparently he heard you crying and came so close, it was forbidden for him to be so close to a broken heart of yours.
"I'll give my heart to someone special this year," he said, closing his eyes to stop seeing your tear-stained face. He never liked anyone crying because of him but he needed to tell you everything right now to put a logical finishing dot in a story of you both. "Just to save me from tears. And I don't want to see yours either."
You sobbed and tried to stop crying but a few tears were still left on your cheeks. Sirius raised his hand to your face and wiped them away.
"No need to, Y/N."
He leaned closer and looked at your lips, biting his lower one but then abruptly stepped back like some thought crossed his mind all of a sudden.
"No. I can't," he said, as if convincing himself. "If you kissed me now," he told you, "I know you'd fool me again. So long, Y/N."
You watched him walking away as fast as he could. His last "So long" could have been physically felt in the air.
This night Sirius and Laura left early. The next day, at around afternoon, an owl with a Christmas card from them reached Potters' place. "We're getting married!" you noticed from afar, no surprise, these words were bold and bright red. Lily gave you a worried look but you muttered "That's okay" and got back to your pudding.
"Hmm, not a word about you," said Lily, frowning and looking through the letter again. "They knew you stayed overnight."
You didn't answer. Sirius decided to throw you out of his life entirely and so did you. Maybe next year you'll give your heart to someone special too.
