Best part of Justice League Elite is they spend the entire thing hyping up Kasumi's backstory, establishing her as a legendary assassin of mythic status. A boogeyman spoken about in hushed whispers in the criminal underworld, above the pay grade of even the likes of Deathstroke. A killer unlike any the world has ever seen, responsible for unspeakable atrocities the world over. What is her deal? Why has she suddenly seemingly gone legit and joined a superhero team? Then she takes off the mask and it's Cass and it's like Everyone: Batgirl?! YOU'RE Kasumi?! Cass: Yes. Everyone: Wait, was there ever a real Kasumi? Cass: Yes. Everyone: Then... then what happened to her? Cass: I'm standing here wearing her costume, the hell do you think happened to her?

I started to read Justice league elite because of the whole Kasumi/Cass thing (I initially didn't want to read it even though it was a Cass comic because I didn't see her on a single cover and now I know why) and I think the first time we see Kasumi, it's actually her and not Cass.

this is Kasumi's introduction:

she speaks in a certain way. that's the first time Kasumi speaks

this is the second time Kasumi speaks:

she sounds different, she sounds like Cass (guess I recognize her speech patterns after all) and she keeps talking in the same way,

short, clipped sentences, trying to use less words.

moreover, you see Cass has a ribbon hanging from her head like a ponytail

the first time we see Kasumi, she has an actual ponytail

Cass had to use a ribbon because her hair is short

the Background Default Canon thing always gets me when authors bring the Justice League into Bat fanfics. it's one thing to fudge the timelines because there was some big event happening that took everyone out of commission for a little while, or to play loose with what characterization would have been current for side characters, but so often none of the members they include were even on the League in the years surrounding the events they're writing about. just set your stuff in the DCAU at that point.

Ah yes, I am familiar with that irritation, particularly the "why are Barry, Ollie and Hal alive and members of the Justice League right now" form of it. Barry's the worst offender. Is this story set at any point between COIE and Flashpoint? Barry shouldn't be on the League.

But yes, there's so often a blindness to the fact that the 'classic' JLA lineup was basically absent between COIE and 1997, and had plenty of roster changes over the years from 1997 to 2011. It doesn't have to be perfect, but you could at least take a peek at who were core members around the time.

Because sometimes that sort of story is like "and then the Justice League showed up to help" and you're blinking going... which version? Did Bruce really call Maxima, Ray Terrill, Ted Kord and Captain Atom to help out? Because I can guarantee Bruce didn't want that list to turn up to help out.

#there's also the fact that at least 50% of the 'Justice League in a Bat fanfic' stories are all 'the Robins creep out the League' #and I groan #because either the members are dealing with weirder nonsense 5 days a week #or it's like...so what exactly are you suggesting Wally Kyle and Connor find odd about Dick and Tim? #those are their PEERS #'Today Justice League Elite showed up to help out' #'well Ollie Wally and Cass turned up and Manitou Dawn worried in the background' #'Coldcast came along because he is fond of Cass'

My take on IDW Sonic in a nutshell. They clearly want to make him into Superman, but he's really more akin to Saitama as they're just guys who are heroes for fun.

I couldn't decide which speech I should use between the world of cardboard speech from Justice League Unlimited or the dreams one from Superman vs the Elite, so I decided to do both.

What the new "Heroes" of Superman Legacy can tell us about the DCU

To somehow everyone's surprise, it seems DC has jumped the Gunn. (See what I did there?)

While many were convinced the antagonists of the 2025's Superman Legacy would be The Authority, The Elite, or even a mixture of the two, it appears for now it may be a prototype version of the Justice League.

James Gunn has casted three JLA members including Isabela Mercad as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern AKA Guy Gardner.

While the Authority, the Elite, or even another major Superman villain can play a part, I believe the spot of heroes who "do what they have to" may have been taken.

While this is a shocking turn of events, and one that may be regretful as over world building was the death of the DCEU, I do think these castings and choice of characters tells a good deal about Gunns priorities.

You see, unlike Black Adam, which brought together a team Justice Society members who it seemed Warner Bros said The Rock could have, this team seems purposeful.

So let's go through the characters and see their potential for the DCU:

Starting with the one I'm most excited for:

Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl

You thought I was gonna say Green Lantern, didn't you?

Isabela Merced is a fairly young actress, known for roles like Juliet in Hulu's Rosalind, The Widow Queen in Maya and the Queen, and most famously....

Dora Dora Dora the Explorer.

Merced is a bright young talent, who has been consistently working since 2014 and landed decent roles in big projects. Whether she continues on to be a great character actress or a leading actor, adding Merced in the DCU early almost guarantees having a star down the line.

But even more importantly than any of that, Hawkgirl is a great choice to begin a DCU.

Like Clark, she is an alien, a young hero, and a brawler. The two can find common footing and begin a very heartfelt friendship that can last throughout the DCU.

Unlike her counterpart Hawkman who isn't really any interesting, Hawkgirl was a founding member of the team for many peoples introduction to DC, The Justice League and Justice League Unlimited cartoons.

More than that, her betrayal for her home race of Thanagarians is one of the most iconic parts of the show.

If that is part of the larger narrative Gunn is trying to tell, that tells me Gunn is honoring what fans actually love.

Plus having a Peruvian woman play Hawkgirl just makes my Latinx/Hispanic heart happy.

Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific

I'm glad Darwin is getting another shot at this superhero thing.

Known for his roles in X-Men First Class, Twilight, The Blacklist, and The Harder They Fall, Edi Gathegi has also had a rather impressive career.

I like this trend Gunn has currently with Gathegi, Merced and Corenswet of actors you may recognize but not know.

What's more interesting than the cast is the character.

Mister Terrific is considered the third smartest person in the DC Universe. While he is known to use T-Spheres as a weapon, he also is an extremely skilled hand to hand combatant, a Renaissance man if you will.

To put him in perspective, he often has a friendly rivalry with Batman.

Terrific is a fan favorite character, and one we haven't seen before in film. He can bring a dynamic fighting style, and a perspective of advanced intellect that can challenge Clark. Gunn clearly wants to bring in the characters people love, in a way they don't expect.

Which leads me to:

Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern

Just not the one you're thinking.

I could go into Fillion's history, but you know him. Castle. Firefly. The Rookie. He's an icon.

While he was famously fan casted and even voiced Green Lantern Hal Jordan in several pieces of animated media, Nathan Fillion is now the DCU's Guy Gardner.

Which is, bizarre.

While Fillion is more than a capable enough actor, and has the comedic timing to play the role, I never would've expected a Green Lantern in the first Superman movie, let alone THIS one.

For those not in the know, Guy Gardner is the asshole Green Lantern. He was a football star who suffered a career ending injury in college, and kind of lives in his glory days. He's a more aggressive, often more obnoxious Lantern. Definitely the least heroic of the bunch.

Introducing Guy as the first Green Lantern, and likely leader of the JL that lost their way, makes a lot of sense. It could tempt Clark to be more like Guy, and even better, remind Guy what it means to be a hero.

In any case, character shows me Gunn is not following a specific playbook. There is no order to which Lantern comes first, nor Flash, nor any character.

Which is kind of exciting.

James Gunn has hit us with a huge curveball, basically telling us to expect the unexpected.

Which to me is a breath of fresh air.

a non-comprehensive list of reasons why bruce has tried banning halloween in the manor

1. dick was overly trusting of clowns as a child. he still holds the family record for most kidnappings in a single night

2. jason tried wearing his robin uniform as a costume. every. year.

3. jason then graduated to dressing up as his corpse and haunting (traumatizing) his brothers

4. cass always manages to scare him. no clark he does not shriek.

5. tim, duke, and steph got ‘spooky scary skeletons’ stuck in his head and martian manhunter started laughing at him in a JL meeting because of it

6. damian was followed and subsequently kidnapped by what they assumed was a group of very tall trick or treaters, but were actually just the league

7. that time of year is when jerry the turkey gets a little self aware (re: defensive). there have been incidents.

8. he walked downstairs only to be greeted with every member of his family dressed like green lantern. even alfred.

9. young justice decided to throw a giant party and to get in you had to wear the shittiest batman costume possible for their contest

10. jason won said contest. he didn’t even stay for the party, he just wanted the excuse

11. gotham rogues are drama kids and are therefore sluts for good thematic irony, so half of them do special edition attacks on halloween

12. the kids all do a candy swap at the end of the night, they invite kate and not him

13. tim has an allergy to peppermint and never seems to be aware of this, so he has to keep multiple epi pens on standby

14. he’s expected to wear slutty costumes and that’s just not worth his playboy cover

15. alfred only confiscates the candy he gets

16. he was just really hungover one year

17. damian has made them all watch coraline so. many. times. he doesn’t even get nightmares anymore

18. tim goes on a sugar high and has to be put on tech lockdown or he might frame lex luthor for murder and extort 90% of gotham’s elite

19. when dick and jason were younger they left open pumpkins outside his door and he would accidentally step in them every morning

20. damian tried to convince them to bob for apples with lazarus water

21. tim fell asleep while bobbing for apples (in normal water) and almost drowned

22. dick and steph drew a glittery skeleton over the batsuit

23. when he complains they all call him the grinch. it’s not even christmas.

24. pumpkin carving always leads to them flinging the innards at eachother and making a mess even alfred refuses to clean

25. the validity of candy corn argument comes to blows. every. single. year.

26. duke lead a revolt one year against the tyranny of bruce’s “no slanderous costumes” policy (he wanted to be slutty batman)

27. the kids throw a rager in the cave and somehow never get caught. it’s the only time they’re all willing to clean and it pisses bruce off that he can’t prove it.

28. bruce got sick and clark walked around the watchtower in a batman costume pretending to be him for two days

29. steph and dick glued the lorax mustache to him while he was sleeping because he refused to pick a costume. it didn’t come off for a week, and lois posted an article speculating he was secretly a natural ginger.

30. all the kids stayed in once and watched ‘it’s the great pumpkin charlie brown’ instead of partying and he’s been trying to get them to do it again ever since
