A Review of my time in Skyrim's Prisons (Featuring some followers): Riften Jail
Part 5 of my Skyrim Prison Review series. This chapter finally breaks the "every interior looks the damn same" chain by looking at Riften, Skyrim's capital of corruption, inequality and... fishing. I think that last one might be important.
Tumblr media
Since my last review the inner circle has grown a few notches. Joining me this time is Dunmer heartthrob Teldryn Sero, Whiterun's finest donkey Lydia, Jordan the peak Riekling specimen and the returning Inigo and Sofia. Actually getting arrested and put into the cell here proved surprisingly difficult. We first tried punching one of the homeless people on the streets unprompted but nobody batted an eye when we did. Then I tried stealing food from a nearby cart but again, nothing. So for the third attempt I thought of a real humdinger. I went into the orphanage and suplexed the old lady running it so hard that her spine broke and she died instantly. The children in the orphanage were naturally very happy and- wait, happy!? I was shocked to find them all celebrating her death! I mean she was called Grelod the Kind for Diagna's sake! I swear, kids these days are so ungrateful! Nobody even called the guards! I murdered an innocent old lady without consequence and I have no idea why. In the end we had to literally beat a guard to death to finally get in enough trouble to warrant an arrest. So much hassle, and for what? Well let's see...
Riften's cell is oddly nice, with a full bed provided in each cell as well as a desk, lighting setup and chairs (no rug though, unfortunately). It was also quite cramped inside the cell with all us inside of it due to the relatively small floor size. Had we all not decided to investigate as a group this would've likely been far more adequate of a cell. There are even multiple other cells in this jail, so it's clearly built for capacity (Maven has a lot of enemies it would seem).
Tumblr media
Attached to the back wall was a pull ring. The ring in question somewhat blended in with the dark colouration of the walls and pulling on it opened a secret entrance and revealed a secret tunnel behind the prison walls. The actual outline for the secret entrance was quite clearly visible so identifying it as a possible escape route was easy. Normally in this situation I'd leap at the opportunity to criticise the laziness of the guards in not being able to identify the obvious avenue for escape, likely by making some joke about them being more blind than a Falmer or the like, but given the very obvious and deep-rooted corruption in Riften hold (which on fear of my life I know nothing about), it's more likely the guards know about it but are paid to turn a falmer's eye. This isn't as bad as the guards being incompetent at their jobs. It's worse. It shows just how tarnished the internal systems of this city are and is beyond shameful.
Tumblr media
Further down the path we were greeted by... a bathing spot? Excess water flow point? Fishing training spot? Given the large Riften fishing scene I'm inclined to assume it's the latter (See? Told you the fishing would be important!). Unfortunately when we arrived there were no fish in the water or indeed fishers-in-training doing their practice reels. Perhaps they were taking the day off?
Tumblr media
The path continued downward to eventually lead to a sewer grate (very original, Riften. Veeeeerrrry original). We sent Jordan ahead first to ensure the path ahead wasn't too mucky and/or filled with waste. He (She? It?) was hesitant at first but a quick reminder of her (His? Its?) position in our tribe proved convincing enough to put its (I'm going with its) mind at ease.
Tumblr media
We were dropped out of the grate into the depths of Lake Honrich. Hardly the most glamourous escape but it sufficed. Inigo wasn't particularly happy getting his fur so wet but the damage had already been dealt. We took this opportunity to return to the jail normally using guard armour and a few brilliant false moustaches as disguises to look at the space outside the cells.
Tumblr media
As previously mentioned, there are a lot of cells in this jail, significantly more than most and the building is well-designed to accommodate these large cells. Though if the rather pompous-looking man in the top left corner is any indication some of the more well-off prisoners can quite easily obtain certain luxuries for their cell. It's also worth noting that (while not pictured above because I forgot to take a visual illustration of it at the time) the prisoner belonging chest is in a wholly separate room in the jail, multiple rooms apart from where the cells are located so no optimistic burglar is picking their cell lock, breaking into the belongings chest and retrieving their beloved Nightingale Boots easily, that's for sure!
Overall... wow. This jail is something else. Much like Riften itself it's simultaneously a brilliant location that operates highly efficently or the biggest sack of Chaurus droppings I've ever encountered. Much of it's defining strengths only exist due to deep seated corruption and the influence of one particularly angry middle-aged woman making them so (which again, I reiterate, I know *nothing* about). As such I can't in good faith call Riften Jail an adequate prison.
Final score: Three Nightingale Boots out of Ten Nightingale Boots
Thank you for reading this review. Next time we go slightly more formal and investigate Imperial HQ, Solitude and the Castle Dour Dungeons

Rq Flash Fic Fridays
Setup: I read a "Maven changes because Mare gets pregnant with his child in the first book" fic and I was like . . . no. So I got to deconstructing how he would react and this was the most interesting outcome
His face goes white.  “You–”
“It’s Cal’s,” I hiss.  “We slept in the same bed for months; it was bound to happen.”
His eyes flicker, as if he, too, is on the boat again.  As if my touch burned as deeply as his did.  “I’ve seen inside your head, Mare.  I know he didn’t have the nerve.” His breath hitches.  “Not like I did.”
I yank down my collar, letting the M sear my vision until I can breathe again.  The reminder of his crimes, the erasure of his kindness, the one I know he can never take back.  “Nerve.  Is that what you call it?”
“I did love you, Mare.”
“Save it.”  The fabric tears beneath my grip, and Maven frowns.  My heart won’t stop racing.  “Will you make me keep it?”
Something rolls over him, a tension I don’t care to unpack.  “It would be better if I didn’t.”  He eyes the brand as if he might kiss it.  “Still.”  A step forward.  “The propaganda.  The spectacle.  And, of course, Cal.”  His lips quirk.  “It would be a shame if he never found out.”
“Elara would skin you alive for this, Maven.”  I shake my head.  “Red children.  I’m surprised you’re even able to say it.”
He stares me in the eye.  “Mother isn’t here, is she?”

Yes I think it's more accurate to call Dean blonde because it allows us to draw clearer visual parallels with the women Sam is attracted to (Jess, Bela, and Ruby 1.0 who are all bright green eyed blondes). Yes I also think Sam would prefer bottoming to Dean. We exist.

I missed mermay cause of school, but listen, consider this, a headcanon because I’m bad at writing gore (the song Mermaids by Florence and the Machine is the only inspiration behind this):
- Mare is a mermaid who every year to help her and her other mermaid friends stay immortal steals the heart of a human prince (whether that be stealing metaphorically or literally 😈). If she does it metaphorically it obviously only helps her, if she steals the actual beating fucking heart and they all share it then, well it helps all of them.
- Her target this year actually straight up falls in her lap after she rescues him from drowning and deposits him on the shore. She keeps an eye on him for a few days, and realizes that he sort of remembers her as this mysterious woman. He’s perfect, there’s enough kindness, morality and all around honor (she almost vomits when she learns about it) in that heart of his that she may not have to go hunting for years. His heart could sustain her and the others for years. So she makes a plan with a few of them. They’ll attend the ball that’s being thrown, and while her group distracts everyone, she will steal the prince away from everyone and take his heart.
- leaving the water like they are only able to do once a year, shedding their scales and losing their gills and fins until midnight, they take what they need from passerby's and enter the ball as a mysterious group of ethereal women and men. Let’s be real, they should stick out like a sore thumb because they are just that freaking ethereal. One woman whispers: “fae” as they pass, but they are most certainly not that, and everyone knows fae and mythical creatures are just stories.
- The whole thing is so easy that for a moment, she thinks this prince actually knows what she is, that he has some strange sense that lets him see passed the glamor and the magic to what she truly is.
- it takes so little effort to get him away from the party and out on a balcony. She doesn’t even have to sing to get him to come, he just puts his warm hand in hers and lets her guide him away. For a moment, she wonders if she bewitched him by accident on the shore, but she would have known if she sang to him. He trusts her without even knowing her, putting his full faith in her as she leads him further and further into the shadowy alcoves until she finds the perfect place.
- Even before she goes about putting him in a position where she can rip his heart out of his chest, she can feel the magic working because he’s already given her a little bit of his heart metaphorically which she wants to roll her eyes at because “humans, so gullible” kind of thing.
- As he’s telling her that he knows its her, that he’s been looking for her trying to find her to thank her and whatnot, she smiles up at him and in the moonlight, he misses the flash of her fangs before she takes the hand she was resting against his wonderful beating heart and punches it through his rib cage.
- It takes two seconds for him to gasp and start losing his footing, in which she lets him slowly sit on a bench as she whispers softly to him and rips his heart clean out of his chest. His eyes are wide in shock but he doesn’t even have a chance to say anything as she presses a kiss between his brows and thanks him. She never does that, but this time it feels right. When she pulls away those lovely amber eyes start to darken as she rips the skirt of her dress to shreds and wraps the now still heart in the scraps before turning and leaving his body to be found.

@kateprincessofbluewhales posted about how it's difficult to make a really good villain both compelling but also still objectively bad without making it weird. So, I compiled a list of some of the villains I think are very compelling (note: this does NOT mean I like any of these characters, they're just great villains) There will be spoilers, so look away if you haven't read most popular series! Luke Castellan from Percy Jackson was a very compelling villain to me. A young man who grew up with a mentally insane mother and an absentee father who grew to resent being thought as less than others and desired to be seen. He wanted all the gods' children to be acknowledged, which is actually a noble goal, but he was highly misled. Eventually, he came to doubt but it was too late for him as he had possessed Kronos's body but he is eventually the one who kills Kronos. And Percy makes sure Luke's last wish comes true. Maven Calore from Red Queen is quite similar to Luke in that he grew up thinking he was less than. I won't elaborate much because I know Kate hasn't read the series yet, but THIS LINE FROM MAVEN OMG!!!
“Are you really so surprised? Poor Mavey, the second prince. The shadow of his brother’s flame. A weak thing, a little thing, doomed to stand to the side and kneel.” I read this series years ago and I still think about this line so- I actually think Umbridge was a great villain. Not because I liked her or felt for her in any way, but because she was exemplary of the political corruption, of people wanting to shut down the truth because it doesn't suit their narrative. I mean, how many people like that have you met? She's a power-hungry bitch. Micah Domitus is such a good villain. He had that whole angle of being one of the more "decent" archangels while also being "forced" to assert his authority while actually being a manipulative dick the whole time and I love it. Just wish he had lasted longer. Amarantha is honestly such a good villain. I could definitely understand her hatred towards humans and she is another villain who really ought to have lasted longer.

to all the ppl wanting receipts on maven, let me explain this to u.
racism isn't just slurs and some single "gotcha" moment. especially when it comes to white women. racism is hidden behind several layers of "nice" when it comes to them because whiteness and womanhood protect them from certain judgments and being more easily seen as "victim" than "abuser." why do u think anne rice even had a career. u think a black or brown woman could have done all that and still got paid? hell no. shit, u think even a black or brown *man* could have done that either? double hell no. that shit is only reserved for white ppl.
a lot of white women in this fandom don't think they're racist at all because they vote democrat and don't say slurs and also watch the interracial vampire show. but u don't talk to real ppl. and then u do all kinds of shit bts to black and brown ppl otherwise because u feel justified about it as a white person. u see ppl criticize whiteness in lestat and u say but he has trauma too, how dare u say this! and you come down episode 5 style on everyone and say "see this is what u deserve" without *any* self awareness. maven's videos say harmful shit throughout them, which are made more harmful because she looks and sounds so fucking stupid. Her weird stans rely on that to come after anyone who says "what the fuck is this" (in regards to what she's actually saying) and say "why are you abusing this white content creator who does nothing but this silly dance to entertain us, what do u do with ur life!" Just like u all love when white men on the show are some kind of funny drag queen cunty slay yasss mother as they outright look to slaughter black and brown characters physically or emotionally, so also do u love to say don't criticize this woman, it's not that serious. or don't judge anne rice, she was soo CrAzY (affectionate), old and/or dead now. "ur so mean!!!!!" u never want it to be serious because u never want to have this conversation. that's what's real. fragile fucking bitch ass egos of urs. we're having this fucking conversation now. Maven creates a safe space for racists by being a popular, uncritical white book fan who associates with other racist book fans. she has witnessed racism happening in this fandom for years and years and never once used her big platform to talk about it (or learn about racial topics in general before opening her dummy mouth about the show). she is a spineless, basic ass white woman who only cares about herself and her own white attachment to these books. inaction against harm u know is happening around u and lack of speaking up is racism. creating a safe space for racists is racism. making white fandom comfortable with u is racism. for the quickest test of whether someone is promoting white fandom shit or not, see how many black and brown fans will recommend that person or thing. nobody here can stand maven except white fandom (and white fandom is not just white ppl, it's any person who promotes the idea that talking about race is harmful and we should remain colorblind except for supporting white ideals and values). there's ur fucking answer by itself.
this is not done out of malicious focus from what white fandom would have u believe is "jealousy" over popularity (another tactic meant to distract from talking about the criticisms themselves). this is done out of real concern of who tf is gonna cause harm or not. maven does not create a safe space except for white fandom and her ignorance to that is her issue at this point because it's LONG been documented. not everyone who isn't supporting u is some general "hater" for no reason and ur fucking dumb if u don't ever examine the reasons ur being criticized. wake tf up, bitch.

Hello, I have just finished the red queen series and I am in love, I looove you and I'm looking for people to follow here that post about that. Do you have any recommandations? Thank youu have a great day!
First place you should go is def the @nortaeventcouncil, they run fandom events (check out the admin @drewtanakagf too, she doesn't post exclusively RQ but she does post for it). @ball-of-butter frequently has great posts, as does @planetmaven. For good art you can go to @mavenne and @snakerdoodlle. Oh, and also @vamxxpire! @lilyharvord used to post a lot and still does very occasionally, as does @king-maven-calore. Both are also fic writers.
Someone who doesn't post a lot on here and kinda retired with fic writing is @nymphenberger/TwistedNym on Ao3. She used to be THE Thomaven creator, now she primarily writes OCs and side characters. Oh, and there's @imperatrice21 who does mostly book 1 mareven stuff
Basically:
@nortaeventcouncil: Everything
@drewtanakagf: she rotates, often Maven, sometimes Mareven, sometimes Maven and Cal
@ball-of-butter: lots of general stuff, but also a lot of Mareven, especially from the angle of making fun of Maven
@planetmaven: mostly Maven, sometimes Mareven
@mavenne: pure art, often Mareven but has drawn other rq content
@snakerdoodlle: mostly mareven (interspersed with a lot of other fandoms)
@vamxxpire: Art of our main trio, mostly Marecal, sometimes Mareven, has a big project in the works and a few oneshots posted
@lilyharvord: Marecal bitch (affectionate), also general RQ stuff (but mostly Marecal). Very occasional fic writer with big back catalogue
@king-maven-calore: mostly Marecal, occasionally Mareven, very good fic writer
@nymphenberger: fic writer, mostly OC creator, THE original Thomaven creator
@imperatrice21: fic writer, book 1 mareven stan
OH I almost forgot bc she doesn't have a tumblr BUT GO READ MUNDANETALKS ON AO3. She does primarily OC and side character content but she's an AMAZING writer, and also artist? She does these great doodles of all the characters in modern AU settings and her designs are SO GOOD you gotta see them

the TRAILERS ARE HERE
azucena is a preuvian fighter and she is so funny and cute AHHHHHH, i love the design, i thought she will wear a dress but this is better! her outfit kinda reminds me of michelle chang from TTT2 but its lovely! i like the little “pride” themes in her stage and on her necklace :3 im just, god she is so cute, i will make edits of her! i would buy her coffee even tho i dont drink that stuff
@kazooyah she is beautiful! im so happy for u! like idk why im crying LMAOOOOOO
raven apparently couldnt bear hearing master ravens bullying (she called him an imbecile in tekken 7) wich could explain their relationship, she is probably just complaining, sassy bitch, now he seems to try to practice more, his rage art looks good too, in tekken 7 they had for each character very boring “designs” like its just throwing them in the air and punch, ravens is neat
im still gonna ignore the story he will have going on with sergei but i have to give my 2 cents once its out
oh also who knows if sergei killing maven was canon, we will find out soon

I hate so many characters in the Red Queen series. I understand it's a book (and these are fictional characters) and absolutely no hate to the author it's an amazing series, but on like a personal real-life I hate them. To anyone who doesn't want to hear how I hate a specific character, you can skip their part. Also understand these are my OPINIONS and understanding of the characters if you disagree you are free to tell me but understand I have the right to disagree with you as well.
Anabel Lerolan grandmother to both Cal and Maven and my absolute least favorite character. She makes me so mad mainly because she makes no attempts to save Maven from his mother. Anabel knew and saw what Elara did to Coriane and hated her for it but yet when Elara shows signs of doing the same thing to Maven she looked at Maven as Elaras son, not her grandchild who was being forced at such a young age to go through the same pains that caused the death of an adult women then has the aducaity to blame Maven for everything that happened.
Julian Jacos is next on this list for much the same reason. He saw what was happening but viewed Maven as the son of Elara instead of a boy who needed someone to step in much as his sister did. I understand why it would have been hard especially after Elara cut out Sara's tongue but even spending time with Maven making sure he understood he wasn't alone was all he needed to do. (This part goes with Anabel as well.)
Evangeline Samos just annoys me because I think she's a self-centered, selfish brat who can only get over herself when family or her girlfriends are involved. She did have some character development at the end but for me it was to late for her to be saved.
Mare Barrow is riding in the same boat as Evangeline but on a whole other level. I despise her to put it simply. In the beginning, she is obnoxious, self-centered, and blankly disregards the feelings of others for whatever she believes to be right. She also has attention seeking behavior and throws a fit when it doesn't go how she wants it. The main example I see of this is when Cal chose the crown. There has been a major debate on this sceen and what he was thinking but for my stand point I don't seem him chosing the crown just to be King but I see him chosing the crown to be HER king. When Cal tries to explain his reasoning to Mare, she refuses to accept and leaves. She had the right to be upset with his decision but not to claim she was not enough for him.
Tiberias "Cal" Calore VII I don't have much to say about. I don't hate him. I just felt he had a right to be added to the list. I think he's okay, and he's trying his best to be a good person despite what he grew up around. I don't like that he ignored the signs he saw from Maven and Elara's relationship, but he was just the prince and a kid for most of it, and at least he never gave up on Maven.
Tiberias Calore VI we didn't see much of but I have no love for him. He was depicted as a drunk and neglective father who was to caught up in the loss of Coriane to really pay attention to either of his sons and obviously favored Cal the son of his late wife. I do think he loved Maven he just didn't know how to be a father to someone that wasn't Coriane's son.
Elara Merandus is a bitch and I hate her. She was mentally abusive and hurtful to Maven from a young age. She manipulated his views of his family members and made him dependent on her and deserved her death. I don't have anything else to say on her.
None of this makes anything Maven did right or any less his fault. I'm just saying at all of these character except Cal and sometimes Mare want to throw all the blame on Maven. It's not just his fault- someone should have done something to help him before it got out of hand. This was all a rant I had to my friend and just felt like letting the internet know about. Remember these are OPINIONS- so it's cool to disagree but be respectful and know I didn't see the book the same way you did.
