Only Wanting Fresh Air (Indiana Dunes National Park)

Only Wanting Fresh Air (Indiana Dunes National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking along the shores of Lake Michigan in Indiana Dunes National Park with a view looking to the northwest on an overcast afternoon. In composing this image, I decided to use some of the dunes nearby and create a more layered approach with the shoreline and then waves coming in across Lake Michigan.

I remember there being a tumblr post (or blog??) a while back showing the funny ways Michigan is depicted or omitted on maps.
Can’t find it now, but here’s a very strange triangular Michigan from Betty Boop “When My Ship Comes In” (1934)

18 inches ... in October
I was in my tree stand Monday just after 6 p.m. when, as Bob Dylan might put it, that long, black cloud was comin’ down.
The sky went from darker, to darker. By 6:20, it may as well have been nighttime. Suddenly a swirling wind blew up and began pelting me with hail. Hail.
As dramatic as that was, it was nothing compared to what happened north of here, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Marquette County, for example, got 18 inches of snow Monday and Tuesday, accompanied  by gale-force winds on the Great Lakes.
As you can see by the chart, 18 inches of snowfall in October is unusual, even in a region where the phrase “erratic weather” is a redundancy.

are you from michigan? you have implied such before i think (if this is too personal you are ofc welcome to ignore)
i am not from michigan, i am from chicago! however my mom is from the lower peninsula & my dad’s family are from the UP so i have. reasonably extensive michigan experience. deeply connected to my michigan heritage
mostly in the sense that i used to know the locations of various great places in the UP to buy whole smoked turkeys and things of that nature, all of which have since closed. but you know. it’s like that

hey you live in Michigan? i always had a question about there. since its split in two parts is there like a rivalry between upper michigan and lower michigan? do the upper michiganians hate the lower ones/vice versa? is it more like a howdy neighbor type deal? these strange accented people intrigue me
I asked my fiancé, who has lived here his whole life, and he says:
upper peninsula residents have a very strong identity that lower peninsula residents dont exactly have, but there isn't really a rivalry and in fact there's a joke in the UP that once you cross the bridge you're one of them. so it's an identity you can "gain" just by moving there, it's not something you have to be born into. there's a level of political neglect for "yoopers" (as they call themselves) from our state government which i believe contributes to the splitting off of the identity. there's a small but vocal movement from some yoopers that they want to break off and be their own state OR that they more identify with wisconsonites/canadians but it's not in spite of lower peninsula folks as much as it is a response to very little funding/attention paid to them from lansing due to a sparse population in the area and IMO lansing just being so physically off-center. the reason our capitol isn't located closer to the UP is because the UP was "awarded" to Michigan as part of the treaty that ended the short-lived Toledo war in which the state of michigan went to war with ohio over possession of toledo (AFAIK the only time in history that two states went to war against the recommendation and wishes of the federal government, it's pretty crazy if you look it up) in a perfect world our state capitol would be in Mackinac City Gaylord or Grayling which would likely over time converge the identities and lead to a greater unity and maybe we'd all get the silly accents in the process. but to answer your question simply there's not really a rivalry except that some UP ppl cheer for the packers
i just let him type this stuff out so if you have any other questions let us know

This video is ATV riding the Alcona ORV Trail East in northeastern Michigan’s lower peninsula. On this cloudy and rainy April day, we drove around 21 miles on this portion of the trail. This trail is mostly dirt forestry roads that are comfortably wide enough for any level of rider. This section of the trail has crossings over a few creeks. For whatever reasons, this trail is designated as 50″ or…
