#Mob Psycho 100 live action

Now that the Mob Psycho anime has ended, I can’t help but think back to the live action adaptation of season 1 that, overall, I thought was actually pretty decent. I mean, clearly the budget wasn’t there (locations of certain scenes were changed, some characters were either combined into one or not depicted at all, cheesy special effects, that sort of thing). But I was honestly impressed with most of the casting and how closely it tried to follow the anime (I unfortunately haven’t read the manga yet, so I can’t speak to that aspect).
I mean, look at this guy! He did such a good job at depicting sweet baby Mob.

Then there’s this nightmare-inducing Ekubo. BUT he was voiced by the same seiyuu as in the anime, which was really neat!

And Kurata, the Body Improvement Club, and the Awakening Lab kids were all treasures.

But I absolutely cannot get over how they did Reigen and Tsubomi so DIRTY.
Let’s start with Reigen.
Tumblr media
First of all, they cast a middle-aged man as Reigen, which already threw me off. But as the show went on, they portrayed him as this scummy, creepy old man. Like, yes he was meant to be a liar and low-key scam artist who liked money. But he was never really malicious about it and he genuinely still cared about people, especially Mob. He had some morals, ya know? His character in the live action, though, was more like a money-hungry horndog who didn’t care about anyone. It was honestly gross.
Then there’s Tsubomi.
Tumblr media
The casting wasn’t that bad for Tsubomi, per se. But again, they made her character totally wrong. In season 1 of the anime, she’s just sort of… there. Mostly just “Mob’s crush”. Of course, we learn more about her throughout the series. But the live action for some reason felt the need to involve her character more in the action, which was odd enough. But they also decided to make her a ditzy, sort of snobby damsel in distress. Which is a total slap in the face, especially now, knowing what I know now about her character at the end of the anime.
It’s like the producers didn’t even bother to reference the source material regarding these two, and decided to fill in the gaps of their character with silly tropes. Which is honestly such a shame.
All that said, I think I would still recommend the live action to those who love MP100. Despite its flaws, it was still pretty fun to watch. And hell, for it being a Netflix adaptation, I think we’re just lucky it was an actual Japanese production and not an American-made whitewashed dumpster fire.

Studio Bones’ and ONE’s masterful work with the extremely nuanced and allusive facial expressions in Mob Psycho 100 adds so much subtext and subtlety to scenes. Like there’s a rich world of emotions behind the text of a lot of important scenes—stuff said only through furtive movements and charged looks. It’s very fun to go back through the context of the anime or the manga and really pay attention to the details. People who won’t watch or read MP100 because of the art style are really missing out

I really wanted to emphasize his intj stare
[Image description: Digital art featuring Ritsu Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100 in the format of an art meme. At the top of the image is text reading "Draw fanart of a character..." There are two large boxes that take up the majority of the image. The left box is labeled "On-model/as close to canon as possible," and contains two drawings of Ritsu, one in the original black-and-white manga style and the other in the anime style with colors directly picked from anime renders. The right box is labeled "In your style and/or with your headcanons," and contains a painting of Ritsu rendered in more detail than a typical manga panel or anime frame, with painterly shading and slightly more realistic features. His hair is much more detailed with highlights from several different hues and many stray hairs, and his dark eyes have a blue triangle-shaped shine, subtly resembling his aura from the anime. In all drawings, Ritsu is in his middle school uniform with a blue bookbag, with a small but knowing smile. In the manga drawing his arms are at his sides, in the anime drawing his arms are crossed, and in the stylized drawing he is pointing directly at the viewer. Text on the bottom, outside the boxes, reads "That look of pure analyzing coupled with a slight sardonic smile that makes people uneasy." End ID]
