A Little Help | Bucky Barnes x Reader

Summary: You don’t even know why you still hang out with them. They’re rude, ignorant, and just overall toxic. So when everything goes wrong over dinner, you simply start dialing numbers to see who would pick up and be able to drive you home, knowing that the buses don’t run this late. What you didn’t expect was for your crush, Bucky Barnes, to be the first one to pick up. What you didn’t expect even more, was his reaction once he got there.

A/N: Hope this meets your standards! I tried my best with this one and i hope you enjoy it! Just a reminder that I will always be accepting requests!

“Hey, guys! Sorry, I’m late! Got held up at the office.” You explain, sitting down at the table with your two other friends. Heather shoots you a small smile while Lauren looks you up and down with pursed lips.

“Hi Y/N!” Heather greets before looking back down at her menu. Lauren scoffs quietly and you shoot her a confused look.

“Something wrong?” You ask, reaching for your water and taking a sip of it.

“Did you have to wear that dress?” Lauren comments, her face riddled with disgust.

“Is something wrong with it?”

“It’s tight, short, and a little revealing. I just wouldn’t recommend wearing it with your body type.”

“Lauren-”

“I know I’m not the only one thinking it!” Lauren admits, turning to Heather. “I mean, come on. Her thighs giggled when she sat down, her stomach pudges out of that dress, and no one wants to see those stretch marks, sweetie.” Heather sighs before turning to you.

“She’s not wrong, Y/N. You do look a little chubby in that dress. Plus you could’ve worn something nicer. Not that cheap crap. I mean come on, buy something of value for once.” She comments.

“Can we just order our food?” You whisper, looking down at your menu, trying to hold back the tears coming out of your eyes. The waiter comes over and takes your order, the people sitting beside you giving you sideways glares as they order their own food.

“Jesus Christ, Y/N. You ordered enough food to choke a goat. Especially with your body type, you should really watch what you eat.” Your eyes burn as you look down at your food.

“I’ll be right back.” You whisper, standing up and walking to the bathroom. You dry your tears and fix your makeup before making your way back to the table, stopping when you hear two familiar voices talking.

“God, why did you even invite her?” Heather asks, not aware of your position in relation to the table.

“Because I feel bad for her. We’re the best chance she’s got at ever having friends. I still hate her though.” Lauren admits, making you stop in your tracks and turn back to run into the bathroom. You pull out your phone and start dialing numbers, hoping someone will answer. Mom? No answer. Kelly, your big sister? No answer. You run through the rest of your contacts and realize the only people you haven’t called are some of the Avengers. Coulson? Nah, he’s most likely asleep. Cap? Funny voicemail, no answer. Your finger lingers over the last name, and you click it before placing the phone to your ear.

“Hello?” Bucky answers after a few rings.

“Buck-” You whisper, your voice catching due to tears, a crack replacing what would have been more words.

“What’s wrong doll? You sound upset.” He asks, sounding more alert and concerned.

“Can you just pick me up? I’m at the restaurant on 8th and Madison.”

“Sure, I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

“I’ll be waiting outside.”

“Bye.”

“Bye.” You walk back to the table after drying your tears once again and pick up your purse, quickly making up the excuse that your boss called you in. The two girls nod and continue their conversation, leaving you to walk out of the restaurant. As you stand out in the cold, tears start streaming down your cheeks.

The rumble of a motorcycle pulls you from your thoughts and you look up, instantly spying the old-fashioned Harley Davidson pulling up beside the curb. Bucky hops off his bike, placing the kickstand down before rushing over to you, pulling you into a bone-crushing hug that makes you sob a little harder. He pulls away and pushes the hair out of your face, his brows furrowing at your red-rimmed eyes.

“Oh doll, what happened?” Bucky whispers, causing you to let out a loud sob. You babble to him about the things your “friends” said about you, and his face grows angrier and angrier by the minute.

“And I just wanna go home.” You finish, wiping your nose with the sleeve of your coat.

“They said what to you? That’s un-fucking-acceptable.” He mumbles, grabbing you by the hand and pulling you inside the restaurant. You try to object, but you end up just leading him to the toxic friends still eating their meals. “Are you two Heather and Lauren?” Your two “friends” turn their heads up to meet his eyes, and you can practically see their panties fall off.

“Yes, that’s us.” Heather adds, trying to act all sweet and innocent, but Bucky looks past that in less than a second.

“So you’re the two assholes who made Y/N cry?” Their faces form into those of realization, and Heather tries to blabber out an excuse.

“Well-”

“Well, what? I don’t see why you judge her so much when you’re wearing the fakest damn pearls anyone has ever seen!” Bucky comments, pointing to Lauren’s necklace.

“And how would you know?” She retorts, obviously thinking she’s done something.

“The paint is chipping, bitch. Also,” He states, turning towards the other woman at the table. “I really hope you didn’t pay full price for that purse, cause the logo is upside down and one brush away from flaking off.”

“At least we can afford something of value at all! She couldn’t even buy anything from the stores we shop at if she tried!” Heather says.

“I’m sorry, have you seen her house? I’m sure yours can fit inside it 10 times. And why are you so focused on money?!” He stops, taking a breath before continuing. “I’m-i’m just guessing here but I’m really not, but you buy “expensive” things to compensate for your bitchy personalities.”

“As Heather said, she can’t afford anything we buy.”

“I’m guessing you can’t either because there is so much fake and ‘made in china’ here that I can barely breathe. And while we’re talking about fake, let’s have a word about those faces, boobs, and personalities!” Lauren scoffs and that’s when you try to intervene.

“James-”

“No! I’m serious! There’s more plastic in these two than there is in the entire fucking ocean!” The man grins sarcastically and sits at the table, crossing his left leg over his right and leaning back in the chair. “So do you want me to continue pointing out your flaws in front of all these people, or are you gonna apologize to my girl?”

“Um-” Bucky doesn’t even wait for the rest of that sentence as he grabs your wrist and starts walking away.

“What about the bill?” Lauren whispers.

“I-i can pay guys.” You whisper, causing Bucky to rear back as you start reaching into your purse.

“Nonono. Apparently, you have a shitty job, and they don’t.” He turns towards the women still sitting at the table. “I’m sure you two can manage without my girlfriend.” Bucky grabs your hand again and pulls you out of the restaurant, handing you a helmet before straddling his bike.

“Thank you.” You whisper, wrapping your arms around his waist as you sit behind him.

“Why didn’t you tell them you work for S.H.I.E.L.D?” He asks, starting up his bike.

“They’d use me to get to you or Cap.”

“Ah.”

“You-you called me your girlfriend.” You mutter, hoping he heard you over the roar of the wind. He apparently did, as he nearly slams on the brakes and pulls off into a side street.

“I did?”

“Yeah,” You whisper, tightening your arms around him.“you did.”

“Oh, well are you okay with that?” You bury your head into his back, trying to hide a wide smile.

“Yeah.”

“Good,” He speaks, turning around to still be on the bike but face you. “because you didn’t have a choice. You’re mine.” You pull your head up and look at him with a bratty glare.

“Oh am I?” You retort, grinning at him. Bucky rolls his eyes before slipping his head behind your neck, nesting his fingers in the hair at the base of your scalp as he pulls you closer. He places his other hand on your chin and tilts you head up, pulling you into a kiss that leaves you seeing stars. He pulls away with a grin on his face, both of your noses nearly touching.

“Yeah, yeah you are.” He whispers, leaning in again.

“Okay”

I have never watched Supernatural actually, so I can't really comment on which one was worse 😅

But after spending years on here and ao3, what I understand is that every ship is very much loved and is the most important thing in the world for their respective fandoms 💕 The amount of effort, emotion and time we invest in these fictional characters forms a deep bond and connection. Something very personal and intimate. So it's very natural for anybody to feel hurt and let down when they never make the ship canon or do it for experimental purpose and snatch it away before you could even blink. It's sad, heartbreaking, something I've experienced firsthand and that's why I sympathize with each and every one of the fans.

And to your last point. YES. ABSOLUTELY! ENDGAME WAS HORRIBLE TO US 💯. I condemn t.e the directors and the studio for doing that to Stucky. And you are also on point with the observation. And I also love your song btw. It's Great! I appreciate art that reflects reality 💔 (🤷)

All of the Captain America Triology revolves around Steve and Bucky. Russo's and M&M themselves admitted it. Hell they even capitalised on the Stucky ship and fandom during the Civil War promotions. Kept baiting us by calling it a 'Love Story' between these two men. Received praise from the media outlets and fans for treating it as more than just a casual-bros-relation. And then they make Endagame, know that they don't have to capitalise on anything or use it for promotion this time and people will watch the movie anyway because it's the culmination of the last decade. So they treat stucky like it never existed.

"Oh, Steve is going back in the 1940s now. He'll leave Bucky alone to deal with all of the problems just after he just got Bucky back from losing him for five years again because of the snap. Cause you know, they're just friends." 🙄

WTF 😡 DO. YOU. REALLY. THINK. WE. ARE. DUMB. ENOUGH. TO. NOT. NOTICE. THE. FUCKING. CONTRADICTION. AND CHANGE. OF. YOUR. TONE.

And I am now going to think of the Russos every time a ship gets dissolved and unacknowledged by the show-runners. Because believe it or not, Marvel did start that trend. If a powerful and such obviously canon but never officially addressed ship like Stucky can be disregarded and ignored in the highest grossing movie of all times, why won't other tv shows, movies and web series follow that lead too? Russos set the precedent for them 🙄

But who needs canon confirmation anyway? This is Tumblr Territory. Why should we let some marketing strategies and corporate decisions ruin our happiness and safe place?

I was thinking, why do people who literally hate Steve still ship him with Bucky? It's bc they know they can't do half the fked up shit they do with stucky when it's sambucky, buckynat or sarahbucky. It's the same as why Tony is shipped with everyone but Rhodey. Not just racism or sexism, it's also bc they know they'll get called out for their shit.

There are so many stories where Bucky and Tony are like 18 (or even UNDER) and Steve is 40, and they can't exactly do that with Nat/Sam/Rhodey. They won't have a horde of likeminded ppl going "oh yeah starker/underage!Bucky is so sexy", they'll have people going "this is racist/pedophilia". Can't use Sam/Rhodey as a punching bag therapist bc Sam/Rhodey fans won't take that. It's easier defending underage, problematic spiteful writing when it's a horde of white ppl protecting their white faves. When you try that shit with Sam or Rhodey you're on your own.

This isn't about bdsm or kinks or sum btw, this is about that pedophilia, abuse, grooming shit a lot of stuckies on here seem to love, the kind that's framed as romantic and hot. They know if they write Bucky treating Sam like they write him treating Steve they can't spin it like it's justifiable or sexy and still have Bucky be the innocent baby. Like, if you treat Sam like trash and enjoy it, ppl are not gonna be cheering you on.

Lmao they have such a strange relationship with Steve. It's like they want the validation a character like Steve gives them by loving/falling for their fave and they violently reject it at the same time 🤔 like they want to make it clear that their faves are above such recognition.

And yeah the dynamic becomes so transparently biased if you substitute anyone else with Steve! I don’t think they would be so passive aggressive if it was anyone else, but never say never. Fandom is so good at concern trolling, so I wouldn’t be all that suprised if they did that to other characters as well... ( ie the latest bucky/sarah discourse).

Oh lmao, I’ve always found the amount of fics that make Steve older/more powerful a bit odd, when in canon it’s the exact opposite 🤔🤔🤔. A few fics isn’t weird, but when it’s so unbalanced, you can gather some Facts™ about fandom.

Then again, as a bottom Steve supremacist, know that I am ultra biased as well.

first: i have a song recommendation— i know it’s been going around in this little corner of the fandom recently, but i just listened to it today and i love it so much 🥺❤️ apparently it was written for stucky, specifically from steve’s perspective. it makes me super emotional but it’s so good imo!

second, a little frustration rant: i’m technically supposed to be working on this essay right now and finally, after fighting with a mental block for a few days, i got started on it. so i guess that’s good? i’m just annoyed because i don’t like it, and it’s just going super slow 😣 also i have another longer and more difficult essay/more important one due on the same day, and they’re both due on november 1st, so i’m super-duper stressed out by it lol

i’ve literally had like 5 breakdowns and 2 panic attacks in the past few days so there’s just a lot going on and i just want to be able to write and draw for fun again 🥺 luckily within a few weeks all of this stress will be over! i also have an interview for a new job tomorrow and i really don’t wanna go because the lady didn’t sound very nice on the phone. but i shouldn’t assume i guess

but yeah— i’m managing! barely

one good thing is that my friend’s fundraiser has made nearly $300 US dollars!! which is more than they ever thought, so i’m proud! ☺️

I’m so proud of you for starting the essay! I know how hard can it be so yay! ♥ I always struggle so much with starting things - both because it’s always so hard to make myself start working on something and because it takes me AGES to come up with the first sentence? No matter if that’s academic writing, a fic, a message I just never know how to begin. So for me even the first sentence is already a great achievement djsdsgh School work is always horrible, I totally get the feeling! But no matter how slow it goes, it goes! With every word you’re getting closer to having it done and then you’ll be able to forget about this. There’s still plenty of time before your due date and I’m sure you’ll make it!

I’ve told you before but I’m gonna say it again - I’m so sorry you’re going through a rough path in life lately. There’s nothing I’d like to do more than to wrap you in a hug and don’t let go until everything feels better again ♥♥ But you’re such an incredible and strong person, you’ve overcame every single obstacle that life has thrown your way up to this point and I’m sure that you’re gonna get through this as well! Hi I really love your writing, so far I've read Fairest of Them All, Smitten Kitten, spideypool sequal of SK, and The Stories We Write, I loved every second of each of them and I cant wait to read more. TSWW had me laughing the entire time btw, anyway I just wanted to ask if every excerpt was a fic you wrote and posted or if some were just written for TSWW, like they didnt come from any of your other works you just wrote a quick scene to put in the story?

Every excerpt I wrote specifically FOR that story. I opened my Idea Folder and pulled a bunch of ideas and either wrote a scene in TSWW for it or mentioned it in passing so I could cross it out of the Idea Folder and move on lol

Most of the scenes were pieces/ideas I’d picked out specifically for Stuckony, or at least specifically for Tony-centric stories but there were a few I changed from Spideypool to stuckony just because I loved the idea but knew I’d never get around to actually writing a full story for it.

OH the exception would be that eye gougingly terrible female reader/Stucky reader Insert— I was honestly just poking fun at cringy reader inserts/those awful romance novels you know are written by Straight Men because of the weird fascination with tiddies?

And then of course the one Stucky wrote for Tony which was just a mash up of all the tropes they’d come across, so I don’t think it counts.

Anyway, yes, every excerpt was a scene I wrote specifically for TSWW. I thought it would be too “involved” to quote stuff I’d already written and I definitely didn’t want to misuse someone else’s writing/offend another author by quoting from one of their fics so I just made them all up!

Glad you enjoyed it though! It turned out super funny lol

If you love my Stuckony I HIGHLY recommend “Long Distance”, it was my first Stuckony fic but I think it holds up as not too terrible lol it’s just cute and funny and of course if you want a challenge, check out Pirates Heart for approx 250k of pirate themed Stuckony shenanigans. I created an entire world for that and it’s got basically everyone in it, including TChalla and Mbaku, Diana Prince and Valkyrie as Ye Olde Lesbian Pirates, Tony going from mega innocent to a bloody scalawag, lots of gratuitous shirtless Bucky and Steve and Thor in a loincloth, so honestly, what else could we want from a fic??

Me watching the end of endgame: wow the home of phobia

We’ll never know for sure but it does seem highly likely that they did this because of the massive popularity of Stucky, doesn’t it? I’ve been struggling to find a better explanation and I can’t. The writers built up this beautiful, deep, lifelong relationship between these two men, for some reason not realizing many people would interpret romance in it, and then went oh shit, no, we wanted you to like it but not THAT much. Same reason they shoehorned that horribly awkward kiss with Sharon into Civil War in which Steve (barf) literally kisses Peggy’s niece like 2 days after her funeral, and Bucky nods at him like yeahhhh broooo from the car like he’s some kind of sidekick fratboy douche canoe which is both fully out of character for both of them and also does a giant misogynistic disservice to Sharon Carter by relegating her whole character to nothing more than a no homo device.

I have zero need for Stucky to actually be canon. I haven’t come across many people who do. That’s not at all what the issue is. It’s that the writers spent the whole Cap trilogy asking us to care about these two men who have meant everything to each other since childhood, and asking us to believe they would without hesitation tear the world apart to protect each other and always always always choose each other no matter what, and then in Endgame went ‘lol just kidding’ because their own narrative suddenly contrasted directly with the hetero happy ending they’d last-minute decided they wanted.

Relegating Bucky to an afterthought that Steve barely considers before making the seemingly easy decision to leave him forever is not just shitty because it hurts our fandom ship, it’s shitty because it’s bad writing. It’s inconsistent, it requires rewriting the past and asking us to believe things that were never true (such as the fact that Steve’s been secretly pining for Peggy this whole time - he hasn’t, in canon, but they said oh whoops he has actually we just never showed it to you, cool?) It’s reminiscent of JK Rowling and her ridiculousness, isn’t it?? Uhhhh oh btw I never said anything but Dumbledore was gay the whole time even tho I never mentioned it before now or showed it to you in the books or movies in any way whatsoever. At the last minute throwing a new plot into well established canon and characterization even tho you never showed it to your audience before but suddenly expecting them to believe it was secretly there all along, is terribly lazy writing. I’m a low-level fic writer with no professional training or experience in writing fiction and even I know that.

Steve deserved better, Bucky deserved better, Chris and Sebastian deserved better after all the work they put into these gorgeous characters, and we deserved better. Even people who couldn’t care less about Stucky have to admit this was lazy and completely retconned the rest of the movies in favor of shoving a no homo ending down our throats that literally nobody asked for. All we can do now I guess is take comfort in the fact that we understand Steve better than the writers do, and throw that ending in the trash where it belongs.

The Boy With The Thorn In His Side i just read this one yesterday and i am truly obsessed and would love to talk to someone about it!!! so steve’s captain america still but it’s modern bucky who is a ufc+ (ufc but for superhumans basically) boxer, and there’s some angst, some fluff, some sad lonely men finding each other, and it’s incredible! you need an ao3 account to read it btw.

Spaces On The Wall this one is so lovely!!! it’s an au with steve and bucky as single dads, and steve’s like the all-american hot-shot beefcake lawyer while bucky is new to town and has hella ptsd from being a pow and is really only holding it together for his gorgina daughter, and they obviously find each other and it’s beautiful.

Dishonor On Your Cow okay this one over 100,000 words which i rarely read but it’s so worth it. it’s captain america and modern day bucky with his best friend sam wilson and i loooove a sambucky dynamic. it starts as enemies to lovers because bucky is like soooo unimpressed by captain america’s whole shtick. for this one i’ll just add the actual little excerpt summary because it describes their dynamic at the beginning so well.

“Sergeant Barnes?” “Oh, hell no, don’t call him that, man,” Sam warned.

“Captain Fuck Off!” Barnes shouted over him. “Fight me!”

Steve didn’t know whether to laugh or just slink away. He managed to combine the two by pacing two steps and snorting instead. Like a bull.

“I’m gonna need you to calm your ass, Barnes,” Sam said as he went limp again, obstructing Barnes’s struggling under him. “This is so undignified. That is Captain goddamn America.”

“Captain goddamn America!” Barnes repeated, louder. And angrier.Steve cleared his throat again.

“I’ve been looking for you,” he told Barnes.

“I hope you brought lube this time!” Barnes shouted.

The Memory of Us okay this one is definitely very angsty but has a happy ending don’t worry! so after steve and bucky have been reunited and are doing alright, steve gets taken by hydra and made into a replacement for the winter soldier. and so bucky has to go save him and deal with his own guilt and trauma.

i’m guilty of treason (i’ve abandoned control) okay i am like probably one of the most diehard bottom steve stans out there, but this fic was worth delving into sub bucky because it’s soooo good. steve is super daddy as like middle-aged, silver-fox, rogue captain america, and bucky is the young SHIELD agent who gets captured by steve’s team when SHIELD sends him to infiltrate steve’s team (don’t worry, neither of them are bad guys in this, they’re just idealistically on opposing sides for the time being). bucky is like super slutty and super thirsty for steve, and steve is just so big and dominant, and normally i would be like ???? at those dynamics, but somehow they work so well here idk just read it

despite the threatening sky and shuddering earth (they remained) okay this one is literally going to destroy your entire soul and i’m sorry for that but also not. this guy is colloquially referred to as “the mask fic” because what happens is that the winter soldier’s mask is screwed into his face so it doesn’t come off on the bridge while fighting steve. it absolutely is not a warm, fluffy fic, but it’s beautiful and has a happy ending and is definitely worth a read.

The Right Partner i’m ending this section with this fic because i looooooooooove it and it won’t break your heart. it’s just really fun. captain america meets a new rival, the winter soldier, right around the same time as steve rogers meets the most beautiful man (you already know) named bucky barnes. it’s kind of a mr. and mrs. smith au type deal

if the bad times are coming let ‘em come this is one of my favorite all time fics, but it’s very bittersweet. basically the winter soldier somehow accidentally time travels backs to the 40s and meets scrawny badass steve rogers, and while neither of them really know the other, they know the other, you know? it’s basically tiny fiesty steve taking care of big, broken, touch-starved winter soldier and it’s absolutely gorgeous
