Cody had succumbed to the darkness and lived in it for the better part of a decade.

Rex knew they would find him, that Cody wasn’t permanently lost to him.

When they brought Cody back—rescued him—Rex would sit with him for hours, just as patient with Cody as he’d been with any of his troops when they needed it. Sometimes Cody would talk. Not much more than a few words, not enough to fix any of it. Not yet.

Every day Rex would sit with him and when Cody was ready, he leaned into him and the tears began to flow. It was instinct for Rex to wrap his arms around him, to comfort him like Cody would always do on Kamino a lifetime ago.

Rex watched the sunset and pressed Cody closer as his own tears formed.

They would be alright.

Everything would be alright in the end.

CC-2224 let the slip of whatever the General had started to say slide.

(Co— what is Co— so familiar, out of grasp, Co— please you need to leave, I need you safe plea— shh, go back to sleep. -dy)

It wasn’t his place to correct him. “We are still establishing control over the airspace. Please keep inside until safety protocols are instituted, Sir.”

(it’s not safe, go, I need you safe please— sleep or we will make you)

The General sighed. “Of course, 24. I’ll be along in just a moment.”

CC-2224 saluted, caught the General looking at him over his shoulder. Yellow burning eyes.

(Shouldn’t they be… sleep blue reboot)

His head is jerked. He jerks his head.

“Stay with me for a minute, Co— 24.”

(Co—? What is Co— so familiar, out of grasp)

He had duties to fulfill, he didn’t have time nor the inclination to watch, what was it, the planet’s sun rise over the distant mountain range. “Yes, Sir.” Fell into parade rest and pretended to not notice the General’s hands shaking. It wasn’t his place. Good soldiers follow orders.

post order 66 codywan governed by irrationality. cody is irrationally angry that obi wan didn’t look for him. even when he rationally knows that obi wan didn’t know he was alive, or even his reasons for staying on tatooine. obi wan is sometimes irrationally scared that cody might try to kill him again, even when he rationally knows that he is not the same man who tried the first time. does he fear that if this happens he might be forced to kill cody to protect luke and all he represents? or does he fear that he’d be unable to do this, that ultimately his love for cody would win over his loyalty to luke (to anakin)? does he fear being forced to choose? is cody guilty that he’s hiding whilst his brothers fight? that he failed to protect them earlier and now he’s failing them again?

#yeah fluff is nice but what if they were both irreparably effected by their experiences #i think this is also worse ? better ? if cody was a purge trooper as he often is in these fics #don’t get me wrong i love the fluffy reconnection on tatooine as much as the next person but recently i’ve been having thoughts #codywan #star wars #also wrote this is my drafts at like midnight so if it’s not too coherent my apologies
