this is going to be a slightly incoherent post but i need to get this out of my chest because FUCK.

like. i've said it before but the fact that NONE of the story would have happened if Yui hadn't decided to go 'fuck this' and accept gabimaru? if he hadn't loved her? i think about that a lot.

genuinely, you can take any point of the story, ask yourself 'what would happen here if yui didn't exist/if gabimaru didn't love her/etc' and nothing happens. that's it. it just doesn't happen

like haha funny story about rabid cat ninja who's in love with his wife - IT IS THE FUNDAMENTAL FACT UPON WHICH THIS ENTIRE STORY IS BUILT. DO YOU UNDERSTAND.

hell’s paradise honestly has such interesting protagonists like. a trained killer who’s been slated to die and his executioner. a man who’s killed his whole life and a woman who’s still learning how to kill. one of the most feared murderers and the lowest-ranked professional executioner. and they are going to paradise (to hell) together.

the whole thing with tenza is SO fucking good. before the story even STARTS he understands that criminality and morality are two separate concepts—from the very beginning, he's actively seeking to save someone the shogunate was determined to execute unfairly. and then he just DIES. we meet him, learn he's bold and stubborn and virtuous and kind, and then we watch him die trying to protect nurugai because he knows her status as a death row criminal is undeserved. and GOD talk about haunting the fucking narrative. his self sacrifice weighs so heavily on shion and nurugai both, and it takes shion the entire story to fully come to terms with tenza's death and his own sense of justice for nurugai. as for other characters, an obvious example is that fuchi doesn't claim "crime and evil are not the same" until chapter 91, while tenza is dead by ch 22. it's just so interesting to introduce him (and kill him off) so early in the narrative when he understands something everyone else needs about a hundred chapters to figure out

This is the reason why Senta is a character so close to my heart. As someone who was forced into expectations very young, i know the feeling all too well. Being made to do something you actually despise when you'd rather do something else, bound by the shackles of duty, never ever feeling free no matter what you do.

To physically feel your dream rot and fester inside you as you realize there's no way out. Acting on autopilot as you go through the motions of what is simply expected of you, you can spend many years living and never be truly alive.

Either fortunately or unfortunately for me, unlike Senta i was actually no good at the path laid out for me but even that was a weight i couldn't lift, never feeling good enough, so i can't imagine actually being good enough but being dead inside regardless.

And thats one of the reasons i don't think what he felt for Yuzuriha was romantic or anything, it was more like adoration, admiration and jealousy at witnessing someone who was free, alive and enjoyed living in ways he never could.

In the end all he wanted to do was paint and it's sad that he could only feel that freedom in an illusion brought on by his death.
