Rewriting My Tragic Ending - By Kxwon (7.5/10)
She needs loyal dogs! She gets that and more. The usual sweet holy saintess story gets overthrown by a woman who refuses to die. She steals the men that were supposed to worship the true heroine, and her meddling actually prevents unnecessary deaths. So this is junk without the guilt. Some necessary evil. A grey area villainess!
Alicia had the perfect life. The perfect family. Money. High status. She also got a magical and holy adopted sister, who she loved dearly.
Nix was clearly crazy from the start. But Ophelia was too pure and wonderful to kick him out. It was the one thing. The one time Alicia said no to Ophelia. Ophelia was allowed to have whatever she wanted, but Alicia wanted to kick out this one suspicious man! Ophelia fought back, and then Nix transforms.
He's barely human. A dark worshipper intent on sacrificing Ophelia to end their peaceful world. He wants his God to devour all. The entire family dies except Alicia, her baby nephew and Ophelia. Ophelia runs away after attempting to save Alicia...but Alicia doesn't know that. When she wakes up she sees Ophelia fleeing.
She holds her baby nephew. She vows to rebuild his family. She will make money, so he can have the title and life he deserves. The castle has been flattened. Their parents are gone, but Alicia will not give up.
It takes ten long years. Alicia used the money in her name to open a wine business. It's successful. She has managed to keep all of her family lands. Everything is going well, but she cannot share it with her beloved family.
Ophelia has not shown her face.
Alicia despises the coward who left. Ophelia never even came to the funeral, where their shared family was buried en masse.
Alicia is captured by Nix. To add insult to injury he doesn't care about her. He plans to use her as bait, to lure out Ophelia. Alicia wakes in a nasty cell, in chains. With nothing but cult madmen for company.
She dreams, and its a nightmare.
She dreams about a book called Ophelia's Night. She is dead in that book. Nix tortures her. He uses her body, literally, to lure Ophelia out. Ophelia accidentally gave Alicia her divine powers when she attempted to save her. Alicia can survive any torture, so Nix delivers parts of Alicia's body to Ophelia.
When Ophelia finally comes Nix beheads Alicia.
Ophelias powers return to her when Alicia dies. Ophelia gets over her cowardice when she looks at the body. She attacks Nix, finally ready to sacrifice herself for once. She wins and is declared the savior of mankind.
Now Alicia knows she has powers. Great. She manages to use them to escape her cell. She uses information from the book to find Ophelia's weapon. It's a man. His name is Norman and he's an unnaturally strong paladin.
She frees him.
The first chapter is Norman swearing his eternal loyalty to his savior.
It's promising.
He seems like a really sweet guy. He is, at the very least, her slave. He wants to serve at her side forever. There are other men too, and the villains are very bloody. Norman will probably be doing massacres for her soon. Hopefully. I got the yandere vibe from the promo chapter. Right now there's not much.

1,8,9 and 19 for the 3H asks?
1. favorite house?
When all was said and done, it ended up being the Blue Lions house. I really enjoyed a lot of characters from all the houses, so I dunno if it's the "this is who I started with" bias, but Lions has the majority of my favorite characters.
8. favorite house leader?
Also...probably Dimitri, although I really, really like Claude (and Yuri if we're counting him) a whole lot too. Although I will note this is for Houses specifically, as I'm...not wildly keen on what Hopes did with Claude.
9. favorite faculty member?
Oh, definitely Seteth, although I've grown to like Hanneman a lot too. Cyril's not "faculty" per se, but he gets grouped with the "church" characters, and I do love Cyril a whole lot.
19. favorite post-timeskip design?
As a general rule I tend to prefer all the timeskip designs more than the preskip designs, but for each "group" of characters...
I like Linhardt and Petra's designs the best of the Eagles, Dedue and Ashe's designs for the Lions, Ignatz and Marianne's designs for the Deer, and Cyril, Hapi, and Yuri for everyone else who got a timeskip design. Out of all these I probably like Dedue the best, but he's my favorite character, so...

of obsession and persistence
when lan wangji was but a child, sat in his mother’s lap, he remembers thinking he wanted to have all of her and nothing of his father. a passing thought that was easily and quickly disturbed by the warm happiness of finally seeing her.
that thought stayed undisturbed at the back of his mind. until he met wei wuxian.
suddenly he felt his father’s blood running in his veins. something was slowly but surely growing inside him, something wicked and ugly, that reeked of jealousy. it crawled up his throat, tasted bitter in his mouth. it took one look at wei wuxian and said “mine, mine, /mine/“. it felt regrettably like greed.
he tried his best to suppress it, to kill the fire that slowly burnt his insides, until all that was left werethe ashes of his restraint and he caught himself saying “i want to bring someone back to cloud recesses, bring him back and hide him”.
at that moment he was every bit his father’s son.
he couldn’t control it, it was bigger than him, all-consuming, and, most importantly, it wasn’t new.
he had seen it before, had watched as it destroyed everything in its way, twisted and insatiable, devouring blindly, always seeking something no one could quite give.
he had seen his mother withering under his father’s obsession, had witnessed as it got to a point of no return. and, still, it had not been enough to appease the thing that twisted in his stomach, that made him nauseous.
and now it was happening again, after so many years of careful taming, of mindful trimming, after being so cautious, it had caught him when he least expected.
he once thought it to be something overwhelmingly suffocating from the beginning. instead, he was hit with carefree laughter, incessant teasing, a smile kind but sharp, containing a certain wilderness that could only be described as addicting.
much like his father, he too had come upon an untamed being; much like his father, he too wanted to contain him.
the thing is, lan wangji was nothing if not persistent, some would even say headstrong, so he decided that if his father’s blood insisted on sticking with him, so would his mother’s.
and so he took everything she ever taught him - the softer, kinder version of her only he and his brother got to see - everything she was, that was kept safe and close to his heart, and brought it forward.
he refused to oblige to the parts of him he didn’t want to acknowledge, the parts that wanted to restrain wei wuxia. instead, he chose to set him free, not drag him to cloud recesses but to beg for him to come willingly, and, when he refused, to watch from the sidelines, to try and protect him from a distance.
then came the day when he regretted that decision. in a dark and cold cave, with wei wuxian, bloodied and hurt, cradled in his arms, he thought it would have been better to have him unhappy than not to have him at all.
he felt the consequences of his every decision, felt it deep in his soul, where his heart recoiled in itself, wanting to disappear, felt it in his own flesh, thirty-three times over.
later, much later, when he wakes up every day to the reassuring weight of wei wuxian on top of him, his breathing even and oh so real, he tries to convince the thing that it got what it wanted, that it does not need to keep growing, expanding every day, eager to take up more and more space, to conquer and dominate.
he tries and fails as he looks at his husband and feels it swelling, so fast he feels sick, it wants to whisk wei wuxian away. to where? he doesn’t know, he just wants and wants and wants.
it wants to bend until his ribs crack open and swallow wei wuxian whole, to keep him inside and hide him, protect him. it always wants more, insatiable in its awakening.
and maybe it’ll burst inside of him, maybe it’ll leave nothing of him behind, maybe it can transform them both into one being, maybe that’s the only way it’ll know peace.
in the end, what scares him the most isn’t the thing that keeps growing, it’s how used he’s gotten to it. he knows wei wuxian would never leave him, just as well as he knows he would never let him.
and one night, after they’re tired and breathless, laid side by side, a tangle of limbs and hair and souls, he tells wei wuxian so.
“i’ll never run away” wei wuxian says “nothing can beat love”
lan wangji shivers, the thing inside him swells with pride, “/good/“, it says, “let him believe that”.
“my love isn’t kind” lan wangji whispers, and suddenly he’s a child nested in his mother’s lap, afraid of the time he’ll be away from her.
“you have to trust me” wei wuxian says, sounding as sure as ever.
“i do” lan wangji answers, not even a heartbeat later. and he does, more than he trusts himself, more than anything.
wei wuxian smiles at him, his eyes glowing under the moonlight with something soft and careless, and kisses him, and kisses him, and kisses him, and the thing inside him shrinks ever so slightly.

Ok actually you know what? I have more emotions about this.
The way that aa consistently portrays the influence that characters have on each other is incredible. But more than that, the way that it portrays the influence of horrible, awful characters on characters who fight to be morally good is so fucking important to me. I’ve written about this before—it’s woven throughout the games. Kristoph’s heavy influence on Phoenix during the seven year gap. Klavier slamming his fist against the wall. Franziska clutching her arm. But I think the most fundamental and impressive example is, of course, Miles.
Miles never takes off the caravat. His gestures, even if they’re toned down from Bratworth, are still very clearly derived from von Karma’s courtroom behavior. Everything he does is visibly shaped by the man who abused him and his sister, who murdered his father and framed him for murder. And it always will be. He is, as much as Franziska, von Karma’s living legacy.
And—let me say—that is fucking tragic. It’s horrifying. They shouldn’t have to go through that. But.
It is so important to me. AA shows us how these characters don’t need to shed every single resemblance in order to heal. Miles wears the caravat while he works and struggles and questions and ultimately becomes something greater and kinder than what was given to him. Von Karma’s legacy is Franziska and Miles Edgeworth—isn’t that hilarious? Isn’t that amazing? Hell, even the von Karma name quickly becomes associated with Franziska over her father, just like “Gavin” becomes Klavier instead of Kristoph. Klavier “air guitar in a courtroom” Gavin is Kristoph’s living legacy. And guess what? He’s one cool, levelheaded prosecution attorney.
this always reminds me of luke skywalker saying “I am a Jedi like my father before me” (no that didn’t rewrite my brain as a kid in a shitty family, why do you ask?). For him to say that to darth vader, after multiple people have expressed fear that he will turn to the Dark Side…it means: I have seen the legacy you want me to have. I know what you want me to become. But that’s not the lesson I’m taking from you. You were cruel. Lesson learned: be kind.
AA shows us how characters who were fundamentally shaped by horrible people are able to twist that influence to their own ends and heal and thrive. Makes me emotional man
