Architectural Finds, 06/24/2023
My walk today was a brief 20 minutes, I was meeting up with a friend from upstate for some chai who had come down the night before to stay with some other friends. We met up at the Chai Spot on Mott St. (which I definitely now recommend) and we relaxed in their backroom lounge with our chai's for 45 min or so. She eventually had to leave to catch her bus back upstate & I walked her to the subway stairs hugged her and said goodbye. Feeling the warm weather on my skin and the caffeine in my veins I decided to walk up Broadway, here were some of the architectural highlights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This cute turret room on the top of the building on the NE corner of Bleecker & Broadway. Doing the smallest ammount of googling I am finding out this was Peter Venkman's (Bill Murray) apartment in Ghostbusters 2???? ok.
It just looks like it would be such a whimsical little tower to hang your hair from, idk.
Building Facts: Built in 1891 as the Manhattan Savings Institution, also known as Bleecker Tower. Architect Stephen Decatur Hatch.
Built in the Romanesque Revival style with arches and ornaments, as well as the red sandstone and signature rough cut stone of this style on the base of the building (definitely why it caught my eye, I love Richardson Romanesque/romanesque revival).
The tower on top eludes my brief internet search, but if anyone has pictures of the inside please direct them to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up we have this lil copper cutie who looks like it just got a face lift judging by the shiny copper facade on top. It is currently a FootLocker so hopefully they're treating her nice.
Building Facts: (obv) Built in 1889 by Architect Alfred Zucker.
The menacing gargoyles are cute.
(maybe more of an opinion than a fact, but) there used to be a bookstore called Shakepeare's on the bottom floor and the top floors were 1-per-floor studio spaces for artists to live/work in, & I wish that was the case today, not footlocker and high rent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MOVING ON, we've got this pair of cuties. Don't they look like the best of friends holding hands ready to face the world side by side? These guys are 734 (left) and 732 (right) Broadway.
734: Built in 1872 by Architects David & John Jardine in Cast-Iron Neo-Grec style. Until ~2015, the facade had become a rusted brown/black mess until they cleaned and repainted it.
732: Built in 1854 by unknown.
This little building has a complicated past but ill try and summarize the small dig I just did on it. Originally it was a 3.5 peaked-roof building as a set of 3 houses for wealthy sisters (daughters of John Mason) from 732-736 designed by an undocumented architect. It underwent large renovations twice in its life, and one small renovation adding the Treffurth's sign on the roof cornice. The first renovation happened in 1885 by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh (god write a romance novel already would you) and allowed the introduction of E. A. Mac's bookstore to take the place of the earlier saloon on the bottom floor. It was then renovated in 1900 by Bruno W. Berger to the Cast-Iron more or less Renaissance Revival facade we see today.
-
Im going to keep these next ones brief because I'm beginning to lose steam :)
Tumblr media
1 Astor Place
Built in 1883 by Architects Starkweather & Gibbs (they also designed the Potter Building). Brick & Terracotta above Cast-Iron ground floor facade.
Originally it was used as a hotel and boarding house with ground floor stores. The harsh vertical motifs on the exterior caught my eye, and I was drawn in even more by the harmony of the design elements and color choices.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10 Astor Place aka 444 Lafayette St
Built in 1876 by Architect Griffith Thomas to the same owner as the above building, Orlando B. Potter, who seemed to have impeccable taste in architecture.
I love the ornate implementation of the painted white Cast-Iron in the arches and pillar ornaments on this one. As well as the eye-popping contrast of the white paint on dark red brick, kind of a juxtaposed take on themes seen in the building above with the way the red and black elements seem to blend in together in harmony.
Tumblr media
21 Astor Place aka Clinton Hall
Built in 1891 by George E. Harney.
Originally a Library for the New York Mercantile Library. I love the classic industrial look its such a strong look while they still tried to give elements of the facade some artistic nuance like in the arched windows and dark banding.
Tumblr media
Only Caught the side of this Collonade building but doing more research on it, it's owned by the Blue Man Group????
Built 1831 by Seth Greer and historically home to family member's of the Astor & Vanderbilt families, it is the oldest building I took note of today.
Tumblr media
And of course, how could I not be drawn into the Cooper Union Foundation building's charm. It stands seemingly so alone in the heart of Manhattan, close to a modern miracle.
Built in 1859 by Frederick A. Peterson in the (what I'm finding now to be called) Rundbogenstil German neo-Romanesque style.
I didn't realize it at the time but this picture also seems to be the back of the building. Still just such ornate and well-balanced design!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HONORABLE MENTIONS: This house on top of this building and the cute lil mansard moment next to it, which I searched and searched for but I cant seem to remember where it is.
Edit: I found it, there were street signs in the picture whoops. The one with the cottage is 203 E 13th Street also known as Pear Tree Place. And the little guy with the mansard roof is 109 3rd ave, both of them resting above Kiehls 3rd ave.
Tumblr media
DISHONORABLE MENTIONS: This NYU Alumni building. Who designed you, they should be ashamed. What is going on with your offset, unbalanced terraces in the back? Awful. What was the point of all of these different colored brick patches?? Uncomfortable, awful. It looks like a neutral-toned Duplo set.
Built in 1986 and I cant even find the architect so you know they weren't very proud of it.

JUSTICE FOR THE WILDS!
It's utter bull that Amazon Prime canceled The Wilds! We were left with such a huge cliffhanger...I was really looking forward to seeing what the dynamics & the power shifts of the groups were going to be now that they were integrated. We were also left with the indication that Shelby is now working for Gretchen and the program...now we'll never know what would've been her new role in season 3. We never really got any updates as to how much the parents know about what is currently happening to their kids, at this program. I was also looking forward to seeing if the FBI was going to crack this case and save these kids. This was such a great show. Damn you Amazon Prime! JUSTICE FOR THE WILDS!!!!!!

With the developments of Osiris worship of during the latter half of the 5th Dynasty (Griffiths 1980, 40, 44; Lorton 1985, 120; Bolshakov 1992, 203,210; Bolshakov 2001, 65), a major change in the portrayal of Seth occurs, resulting in the Predynastic Seth the Elder being replaced with what can be classified as Seth the Younger. Unlike his earlier incarnation, the Pyramid Texts place the later incarnation of Seth into the Heliopolitan Ennead, and trace his linage back to the creator god Atum. [...] The original function of Osiris as a god is again an unknown. However, Griffiths proposed that his first function was that of the god of the dead, and with the rise of Osiris worship in the Old Kingdom he became associated with the deceased king. In doing so he displaced both Horus and Seth from their Predynastic roles and association with the deceased king. Horus was recast in a new role, that of the living king and legitimate successor to the deceased king who was now identified as Osiris. This change in religious belief reinforced the political idea of the accession to the throne by the living heir of the deceased king. The newly deceased king and the crown prince reprise the roles of Osiris, the deceased royal father, and Horus, the living king and heir (Anthes 1959, 175-176, 205-206; Griffiths 1960, 21, 27; Lorton 1985, 120). However, as the displaced Seth no longer had any role associated with either the deceased or living king, he was allocated a new function, that of the villain, the murder of Osiris and the enemy of Horus. In this role, although a despicable one, he was essential, for it produced the initial impetus to begin the cycle of uninterrupted inheritance of the throne by the deceased king’s legitimate heir; ‘the king is dead, long live the king’. By this act of filial violence, Seth brings death into the world of the gods but rather than destroying Osiris, results instead in his temporary death and resurrection into an afterlife. The deceased king’s association with Osiris sanctioned the transference of the resurrection and afterlife to the king, granting him eternal life. This would not have occurred without the initial violent action of Seth.

2012 Usagi -a rant.
You're going to get some major grumpage cuz it's been a long week and I am TIRED of bullshit. Strap yourselves in kids..
I love how people just automatically assumed this guy is a pee-paw by literally nothing else but his voice alone.
Tumblr media
Like yes, it's deeper than Jason Griffith's voice, but that doesn't make the character 40 years old. Young people can have a deep fucking voice guys, it's known to happen.
People fucking panicking over 'WHaT AgE iS UsAGi ThO?!"
Whatever age you want him to be! It's left up to interpretation for a fucking reason! RELAX!
If you want him to be an adult and his relationship with Leo is purely that of friendship or even mentorship, FINE!
If you want him to be a teen just like Leo, his balls just happened to drop a little further than Seth Green's? FINE!
For fucks sake guys, Rob was in his 60's when he voiced Donnie, but no one gives a shit when he's paired with every feasible character out there. Literally none of the iterations of the turtles thus far, movies, shows, whatever, have 'sounded' like they were played by an actual child. they all had adult voices.
"BuT iN tHe CoMIcs hE hAs A cHild oUt of WEdlOCK?!"
Yes. In the comics. which is NOWHERE mentioned in 2012. We get a little classic Usagi lore, but nothing about a son, nothing about his other companions he's made during the course of the comics, frankly the only thing familiar about 2012 Usagi is himself , Jei, and the tokage lizards. (They even make up some weird Samurai chick we're supposed to believe Usagi knows, when they could have easily made it Tomoe Ame or Chizu. Kintaro could have been Noriyuki. I'm legit curious why this was a necessity, does anyone know? was it a copyright thing? how'd they get Usagi but not Tomoe??)
Even then, 'in the comics', His age is STILL never confirmed! Learn to live with it! The closest we get is Stan essentially shrugging and pointing at the mid twenties range like 'sure let's go with that.'
Also, fun fact, apparently samurai could be as young as 13 FUCKING YEARS OLD when they went to battle for the first time. Usagi was probably Leo's age during the wars and when he served as Yojimbo to Mifune. He was probably that young when he and Mariko conceived Jotaro. Whatever you think of it, it's history. It was known to happen.
I respect that certain iterations of a ship don't appeal to everyone, if you just don't like it because you personally interpret the character one way, that's valid. But policing an entire ship and anyone else who ships it because of an assumption YOU made is the dumbest fucking hill to die on, honestly. And a pointless one
In the words of a wise Fury
"I recognize that the fandom has made a decision- but given it's a STUPID ASS decision, I've elected to IGNORE it."

hi i read in one of your posts that you think quite a few of the sacred stones voices was miscast. do you have anyone in mind that you think would better for them (esp. for ephraim. everytime i hear him my brain can't help but goes lukas???)
also, any thought on saleh's VA?
Yes, if I had to pick a replacement for Ephraim, here’s what I think:
Aleks Le. I know he already plays Jorge but I feel like he’s a pretty expressive VA with the right range.
Jason Griffith. I know everyone thinks about the goofy Sonic voice but he’s got a nice in-between voice that he used as Sir Aaron in Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. It could work for Ephraim.
Todd Haberkorn. Again Todd’s amazing as an actor but whoever did the voice directing really screwed him over.
As for the others, I may have to address them in a reblog because out of the list I had (Ephraim, Seth, Valter, Marisa, Duessel, Ewan) there’s some that I can’t exactly remember WHY I said they were miscast, like Valter and Seth. Especially because with Valter, I love Imari Williams as Benny and Fuga. So uhhhh let me reblog this later while I try to remember what it was that bugged me about their voices.
But ANYWHO, let’s get to Saleh. And I have to 100% admit I didn’t even know what his voice sounded like because I just… did not like the artwork. I’ve already stated my issues with that artist so I won’t go into it. So I just gave it a listen and honestly, his voice is really nice to listen to. It looks like he’s voiced by Kamran R. Khan, and also looks like that’s been Kamran’s ONLY VA role so far.
So, I think his performance as Saleh is great, his voice is calm but he has a warm and friendly tone that you can hear in his lines. That paired with his hesitation about his outfit is just really adorable. Kind of makes me sad now that we didn’t get Saleh on the Sacred Stones banner.
I think this is a good voice, also a lesser known VA who really fits so bonus points for that! I like hearing familiar VAs but it’s nice to see other VAs too.
Can’t really talk about range, so uhhhh… not much to say on that matter, lol.
I can’t really give a number rating since this is his one and only role, but I will say that I think he’s a great pick for Saleh and he goes on the list of Sacred Stones VAs I’m happy with.

Good afternoon! Please tell me where I can get the book Gwyn Griffiths - Seth, God of Confusion. A Study of His Role in Egyptian Mythology and Religion?
That book is by Herman te Velde and as far as I know the cheapest accessible option is Scribd. Failing that, here's Philip Turner's PhD thesis on the same.
