1,400-year-old temple discovered at Suffolk royal settlement
A rare, possible pre-Christian temple from the time of the East Anglian Kings, has been found at Rendlesham, near Sutton Hoo in Suffolk.
Tumblr media
The discovery was made this summer by Suffolk County Council’s Rendlesham Revealed community archaeology project, which is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, made possible by National Lottery players.
Last year the project uncovered the remains of a large timber Royal Hall, confirming the location as a royal settlement of the East Anglian Kings.
This year’s excavations also uncovered evidence of fine metalworking associated with royal occupation, including a mould used for casting decorative horse harness similar to that known from the nearby princely burial ground at Sutton Hoo.
The royal compound was found to have been more than twice the size than was previously thought, bounded by a 1.5 kilometre-long perimeter ditch that enclosed an area of 15 hectares (the equivalent to about 20 football pitches).
The royal residence was part of a wider settlement complex covering 50 hectares which is unique in the archaeology of 5th to 8th century England in its scale and complexity.
This year’s breakthrough caps a three-year campaign of excavation that transforms expectations and understanding of the period.
Everyone involved in the project can take pride that together we have achieved something remarkable. Councillor Melanie Vigo di Gallidoro, Suffolk County Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Protected Landscapes and Archaeology
Professor Christopher Scull (Cardiff University and University College London), the project’s principal academic advisor, said:
“The results of excavations at Rendlesham speak vividly of the power and wealth of the East Anglian kings, and the sophistication of the society they ruled. The possible temple, or cult house, provides rare and remarkable evidence for the practice at a royal site of the pre-Christian beliefs that underpinned early English society.
Tumblr media
The site at Rendlesham is identified as an East Anglian royal centre by The Venerable Bede in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Bede records that King Redwald, who died c AD 625 and whose grave is thought to be the Sutton Hoo ship burial, maintained a temple in which there were altars to pre-Christian Gods alongside an altar to Christ – although he does not specifically say this this was at Rendlesham.
This summer’s excavations also revealed:
The foundations of three new timber buildings (including the probable cult house, or temple)
Evidence of 7th century metal working, including the discovery of waste products and a fired clay mould to make decorative horse harness
Two graves of unknown date
Enclosures and evidence of earlier settlement and activity from the Neolithic (4th millennium BC), Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman periods
A Second World War searchlight emplacement
These archaeological discoveries show that Rendlesham has been a favoured location for human settlement and activity for 6,000 years from the fourth millennium BC to the present day, but that it was most important when a royal centre during the 6th to 8th centuries AD.
The most recent archaeology encountered was a Second World War searchlight emplacement, part of a searchlight battery recorded on US Force aerial photography from December 1943.
Councillor Melanie Vigo di Gallidoro, Suffolk County Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Protected Landscapes and Archaeology, said:
“This year’s findings round off three seasons of fieldwork which confirm the international significance of Rendlesham’s archaeology and its fundamental importance for our knowledge of early England.
“Everyone involved in the project can take pride that together we have achieved something remarkable. Over 200 volunteers from the local community were involved this year, bringing the total number of volunteers to over 600 for the three-year fieldwork programme, including from the Suffolk Family Carers, Suffolk Mind, and local primary school children from Rendlesham, Eyke and Wickham Market.
“I’d like to thank the landowners and Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service for enabling this project, along with the archaeological contractors Cotswold Archaeology. And of course to all National Lottery players who made possible the grant of £517,300 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.”
Excavations are now complete and the trenches at the site backfilled, with work already underway to analyse the finds with provisional results in 2024.

George Powell Flint
Tumblr media
Beloved son of the late George Pogue Flint and Dorothy Powell Flint, husband for 58 years, 7 months to Helen Elaine, and father to Andrew, George Powell Flint, 83, passed away early on Sunday, November 28, 2021.  He grew up in Nassau County, Long Island, NY, where his father managed a GE appliance store and his mother, a nationally recognized pioneer in adapting 4-H programs for suburban youth, had a 47-year career with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County, 4-H Division.  In 1924, she established a 4-H camping program using borrowed tents and equipment. When public camping was no longer permitted in state parks, she and her mother financed the purchase of a 24-acre rustic camp on the bluffs overlooking L.I. Sound with a sandy beach 90 steps below. This allowed the camping program to continue and flourish with huge effort, creativity, resourcefulness, skill, and generosity from dedicated community volunteers, co-workers , and county officials. Now known as the Dorothy P. Flint Nassau County 4-H Camp, it is a 140-acre co-ed sleep-away camp with a farm and a wide variety of programs for ages 8-16.
An only child, when he was 4 years old, after the sudden death of their mother in Nov. 1942, 3 cousins, ages 7, 5, and 2, came to live in the 3 story Victorian house, along with Grandmother Powell and brave Carolyn Cobb, there to help care for 4 lively boys. After their father, a pilot in the USAAF, completed his tour of duty flying military supplies between India and China during WWII, he returned to the US and established a home in CA.  The cousins moved to be with him, but they were always important in Aunt Dorothy’s family.
In his early teens, a football game with friends resulted in a spiral fracture of his left femur.  The group had climbed a fence with a locked gate to play on the perfect grassy area at the Fulton Avenue School at the end of the block.  The family doctor climbed the fence to aid until the gate could be unlocked for the ambulance.  George spent many long days in traction in Mineola Hospital, but was fortunate to have an excellent recovery.  He had no fond memories of that hospital stay.
George graduated from Hempstead High School and Bowdoin College where he was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity and participated in ROTC.  Upon graduation, he was commissioned   2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.   He trained at Fort Benning, GA, and from Sept., 1961, to Sept., 1962, served as Commanding Officer, Headquarters Detachment, Student Battalion and as Executive Officer, Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Intelligence Center, Fort Holabird, MD.  He was awarded a “Certificate of Achievement” for outstanding organizational and leadership abilities, concern for and interest in the welfare and morale of his troops, and devotion to duty.  Upon discharge from active duty in 1962, he worked as an insurance adjuster for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co., Lynbrook office, where he made lifelong friends. In 1965, he entered graduate school at Teachers College – Columbia University where he was awarded a Master of Arts degree in 1966, followed by a Professional diploma in 1968.  He also studied for a Ph.D. at New York University, all in Higher Education Administration.
At Adelphi-Suffolk College (later known as Dowling College), he served as Assistant to Dean of Students, Director of Student Financial Aid and Placement, Assistant to the President, and VP for Development and Public Relations, as part of a team that successfully raised the funds to build a library.  He became Director of Institutional Relations at Lycoming College, raising funds to build a new gymnasium, and then he was Director of Development at King’s College, leading their successful campaign to fund their first separate Chapel.
Deciding to remain in PA he began a third career as a Care Manager for the Aging, first commuting to Dauphin County, and then transferring to Luzerne County Area Agency on Aging as soon as possible. Experienced, resourceful, professional, and compassionate, and with a gift for treating clients with dignity and respect, he joined the Protective Service team, where he served with upmost dedication.
He was a member of a number of professional organizations and had several articles published in CASE CURRENTS.  He was a past-president of the Oakdale, LI, Lions Club and at the time of his death was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Dallas, where he had served as an Elder, King David Lodge 763, F. & A.M., Kingston, and Irem Shriners, where he sang with the Chanters.
An active parent, he included Andy’s friends in baseball games in the back yard, fishing at Shadyside Pond, golfing at Newberry, and when they were teenagers, trips to Dorney Park, Unexpected calls for help came:  a ride home to Orange from a party, home alone and a stubborn bleeding cut. He responded.  He was an excellent driver and role model, once receiving praise for averting a sure disastrous accident when a driver pulled out in front at a high rate of speed. One of Andy’s soccer friends in the car observed, “Mr. Flint, I don’t know how you did that.”  He was using seat belts as early as 1962.  However, in 1968 he did buy his favorite car, Pontiac’s “Car of the Year.” a GTO with concealed headlights and windshield wipers, and Endura bumpers. His was gold with a black Cordova top.
Over the years, he had many interests.  One little goldfish led to four large tanks of tropical fish.  A fifth-grade teacher enrolled her class in the Audubon Society, sparking his lifelong casual birdwatching hobby.  Whenever he heard a Cardinal’s song, he responded with his own close imitation.  He was a good bridge player, had an eclectic love for music from pops, jazz, bossa nova to classical.  He attended many, many live concerts and Broadway shows.  He somehow had a box seat overlooking the stage for his favorite show, “Camelot,” with Julie Andrews, Richard Burton, and Robert Goulet. He also appreciated good food, whether at home or at a wide range of restaurants from Maine to Maryland and from Long Island and Manhattan to PA.
In his relationships, he was positive, patient, supportive, and constructive   He taught swimming one summer at Buddy Pierce’s Country Day Camp and never forgot the very frightened six-year-old who did learn to swim thanks to his patient coaching, He was known to be a slow speaker, said to have been characteristic of George Washington and Ruth Bader Ginsberg, but he was reflective and thoughtful, never glib or superficial, almost always very serious.
His mother’s family traced back to John Alden and thus two signers, John Alden and William Mullins (father of Priscilla Mullins Alden), of the “Mayflower Compact” on Nov. 11, 1620. George was certified through eleven generations and accepted as a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.   A 5th generation great-grandfather, Alden Gage served in the Revolutionary War, enlisting at age 16-1/2 in Oct.,1775 and serving in parts of every year through 1780.  During the Civil War, a great-grandfather, Frederick C, Powell, served with the 106th NY Infantry Regiment, G Company, from 8/27/1862 to 6/22/1865, His beautifully scripted letters to his parents, describing some of his life and requesting supplies for himself and friends from the Madrid, NY, area, were preserved.
In the last years of his life, George suffered a series of mini strokes and failing vision, despite best efforts to help.  The last twenty months were greatly impacted by Covid 19.  His family extends their deepest gratitude to all those who provided care with kindness, compassion, understanding, warmth, and humor.
A service for the family was held at Trinity Presbyterian Church with Pastor Jen Baer officiating and Pamela Carroll, Director of Music, providing music.  He was laid to rest at Fern Knoll Burial Park near the tall pines reminiscent of the “Pines of Bowdoin.”
Survivors, in addition to his wife and son, are cousins and their families, Cecil J. Folmar, MD and Raymond H. Folmar, MD (Sharon).  Roger L. Folmar (Carolyn, children, and grandchildren)) died in 2013.  Before his retirement, he was a software engineer at Lockheed Missiles & Space and had worked actively on the SR Supersonic Plane and the Hubble Space Telescope.  Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Nancy Masticola and Anne Rieken and their children, Stephen P. Masticola, Ph.D. (Jeanette) and Nadine Rieken.
If you wish. memorial donations can be made: “where needed most” or “where they will do the most good”.

hello! my name is Haley, i’ve been involved in high school studyblr before, but the pandemic and depression knocked me off for my freshman year of college. I applied to a lot of schools and decided to attend Bryn Mawr College with an English major, going in person until late October, and ultimately withdrawing in December of 2020 to attend a community college at home.
My decision to withdraw was after realizing I just didn’t fit at the school, and I went to BMC because it was the most affordable option for me, without choosing the schools that I actually loved.
I was planning on attending law school post-college, but upon realizing that environment would only stress me out, I was lost on what I could do. While at home, job-searching, a spot at a local preschool opened up, and I found myself working every morning, and becoming motivated and well-adjusted, things I had been struggling with after my tough two months at college. I then chose to focus on Education, and I’m now attempting to get my associates and transfer to a 4 year school and get my degree in Elementary Education. These are the courses I’m taking this summer, and I really hope to find motivation in this community again!

This is very big for the city of Minneapolis: The tRUMP sucking head of the Minneapolis police union Bob Kroll, who perverted the very definition of what a union even represents, has agreed to retire under intense pressure...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These rally photos in which Kroll can be seen sucking the big orange tRUMP, happened long after the infamous tRUMP speech to law enforcement officers at Suffolk Community College, July 28, 2017, in Brentwood, New York. This was the speech in which our corrupt illegitimate presidunce encouraged police to be more violent in handling potential offenders:
He described the precautions typically taken by police where they place a hand over a suspect's head while they're being put into a police car to protect them.
"When you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon, you just seen them thrown in, rough. I said, ‘Please don’t be too nice,’" he said.
"When you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head you know, the way you put their hand over [their head]," Trump continued, mimicking the motion. "Like, 'Don’t hit their head and they’ve just killed somebody, don’t hit their head.' I said, 'You can take the hand away, OK?'
The comments were met with snickering by many police in attendance. Our illegitimate presidunce is of course so stupid he doesn’t understand that suspects at this point have not yet even been charged, and even if and when they are charged it is not the duty of the police to be the judge and jury and dole out punishment.
The Suffolk County Police Department, the county in which Trump spoke, afterwards tweeted about its policy on handling prisoners:
"The SCPD has strict rules & procedures relating to the handling of prisoners," it tweeted following the president's speech. "Violations of those rules are treated extremely seriously."
A subsequent tweet read, "As a department, we do not and will not tolerate roughing up of prisoners."
It seems more than likely having a tRUMP kissing buffoon like Kroll heading the police union in Minneapolis was a contributing factor not only in the murder of George Floyd, but in the mistreatment of others as well.
With this kind attitude coming from leaders it’s inevitable that at least some police officers will mistreat suspects knowing that the police union would have their back no matter what. When the Mayor of Minneapolis told officers they could not appear in uniform at political events Kroll was involved in having T-shirts made supporting the corrupt illegitimate orange presidunce, and distributing them to police to wear at the tRUMP rally in Minneapolis in 2019.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Kroll skirmished over several other issues as well, upon learning that Kroll would be leaving: “Good riddance,” Frey tweeted Monday.

Regina Boone pulled the papers out of the fireproof bag.
For more than 20 years, she protected the thick package through her moves from teaching in Japan, to her years as a graduate student in Ohio, then as a photojournalist in Richmond, Norfolk, and now, on this December night in 2016, in Detroit. She'd skimmed the pages before but she was finally ready to make good on her promise.
She read page by page, absorbing the details: Her paternal grandfather, Tsuruju Miyazaki, was born in Japan in 1897. He created a life in America — in of all places — rural Suffolk in the 1930s. At the start of World War II, the government designated him an enemy alien, stripped him of his life and shipped him away. Regina lingered over the love letters he'd written to the black woman he had built a family with in Suffolk. He asked about their two boys, one Regina's father. Her grandfather wanted to return home, the letters and formal requests show, but he never made it. He died shortly after the war ended but nothing in the papers said how or when. Then there was his photo — a handsome man in a tweed three-piece suit, his dark hair and suit crisp, the slightest tease of a grin.
Regina's father was only 3 when Miyazaki was taken away, and he rarely discussed his childhood. The most her father discussed his dad was in his final days in late May and early June 2014, before he succumbed to cancer. That's when he asked her to sit by him. She took his hand.
He then told her: "Find out what happened to my father."
Tsuruju Miyazaki was 14 when he left his mother, brothers and sisters in a seaside village in the Nagasaki Prefecture. If he left for adventure, he found it.
He heaved coal on a ship and worked as a steward and cook. He learned French from his time in the port city of Marseilles and was a well-traveled 24-year-old by the time the Japanese steamer, Texas Maru, brought him to Norfolk on Aug. 17, 1922.
Asian immigrants landing in the south were welcomed more hospitably than those on the West Coast, where anti-Asian hatred thrived. The Japanese appeared to be so rare on this side of the Mississippi that they didn't threaten the racial status quo. They sat in the front, white sections of segregated buses. They studied at Virginia colleges that refused African American citizens.
In Norfolk, Japanese single men and those who married black women tended to live and work in African American communities around Church Street and Brambleton Avenue. Several answered to nicknames like "Harry" and "William." Miyazaki went by "Mike."
Miyazaki spent most of the '20s working for the Philadelphia and Norfolk Steamship Company before leaving it in 1928. By that time, a Chinese or Japanese restaurant seemed to be on each block in the Church Street area. Maybe that's why Miyazaki looked to the less densely populated and quieter Suffolk to start a business.
In 1928, he took over the Horseshoe Café in the black section of town at 360 E. Washington St. He spent time in Skeetertown, a part of neighboring Nansemond County that was known for its interesting 18th-century origins. It was where whites co-mingled and married free blacks, producing generations of folks whose skin color ranged from cream to butterscotch with surnames like Milteer, Faulk and Boone.
He wrote letters and sent money to his family in Nagasaki and once included a photo taken at a local studio, his trim 5-foot-3-inch frame looking taller in that tweed suit.
At some point he met Lethia May Boone, who was almost 20 years his junior. They didn’t wed. They had their first child, Raymond Boone, on Feb. 2, 1938. Their second, Gerald, was born 10 months later on Dec. 27, a day after Miyazaki’s 41st birthday. Gerald’s middle name was “Miyazaki.”
Miyazaki was enjoying his young family in Tidewater while the world was speeding toward war. Germany, Italy and Japan were creating a lethal alliance bent on dominating the globe. In 1940, the United States reacted by passing the Alien Registration Act that required foreign residents to let the authorities know where they lived. Miyazaki dutifully went to his local post office to be fingerprinted.
His mind was on his new home, though. In May 1941, Miyazaki plunked down $1,000 to open Mike's Café in the 300 block of Market Street in Norfolk. He did not know that federal agents were tracking the activities of the local Japanese. Around Sept. 21, an informant overheard Miyazaki say, "I am going to get things lined up for the right time."
Miyazaki could have been planning an order of 7Up or proposing to Lethia; the agent wrote it down nonetheless as suspicious.
Then on Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese bombers unleashed war on a Hawaiian military outpost that few on the American mainland had heard of — Pearl Harbor.
The news hit Virginia around 2 p.m. and the reaction was swift. Police swept through Norfolk and arrested 14 Japanese men. In Portsmouth, police hit Charlie's Cafe and the Oriental Cafe on High Street and rounded up eight workers. By 5 p.m., Suffolk police picked up Miyazaki and his employee from the Horseshoe.
Miyazaki was allowed to appoint a manager to run his business for three days, but authorities were not going to let him go. A month later, Miyazaki and others were shipped to Fort Howard Detention Camp, a compound of old Army barracks in Baltimore.
He tried to soothe Lethia from afar. He also mailed letters to keep Mike's Cafe going and to track his restaurant equipment and his bank accounts. He got letters back that the landlord of his Suffolk restaurant had already rented the Horseshoe to another tenant.
Miyazaki was paroled in March after being deemed a non-threat, but he was not freed.
Executive Order 9066 issued in February forced about 120,000 Japanese families into internment camps. While some Italian and German families were included, most were Japanese. Most of them were American citizens.
On Dec. 4, Miyazaki was put on a train to Rohwer War Relocation Center, newly built in Arkansas swampland. A few days after arriving, he wrote to Lethia. He, like several others, spelled her name "Leather."
He mailed Lethia earnings from his job as a timber worker and then cook’s helper and was looking to return to his family. He’d written a friend about getting him a job in Suffolk and got a reply in May: The owner of the Busy Bee Cafe would love to have him at his restaurant.
The government, however, would not allow it. Japanese aliens, even those deemed peaceful, could not be go back to areas with military installations.
In late 1943, Miyazaki was shipped to Chicago where some 20,000 Japanese were being relocated to fill a wartime labor shortage. He got a job, rented a room in a boarding house and reported to a sponsor twice a month.

*Nothing BTS related...just a personal update for any ARMYs that cares*
Wow...okay I have not been active on my Tumblr page for a years now. Most of you might know it is because I had started college. I was enrolled in Suffolk County Community College for two years. I recently graduated with an Associates Degree in Philosophy. To continue my studies, I applied to many other Universities and was honored enough to hear that I was accepted to Columbia University, School of General Studies, a prestigious Ivy League University in New York City.
To graduate from this institution would be one of the greatest achievements in my life. I have worked hard in college, especially when I had to adjust to a whole new country (I emigrated from Singapore to Long Island, NY), to achieve a 4.0 GPA, be on the Dean’s List for four consecutive semesters, and be part of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
As a fellow ARMY trying to navigate this world, I am seeking out to ARMYs all over the world to help me if they can! The yearly fee for Columbia University is $90K outside of other financial aid/scholarships that I received. My goal is to raise $50K (yes i know, it’s a lot!! > <) Please click on the link if you are interested and help me reblog/share this so that I can reach out to as many ARMYs as possible!!
xx Sofiya

Overhead Garage Door Repairs
Garage door repairs are inevitable even with the best installation. When a homeowner uses their door several times a day, whether operated manually or by a remote control in the car, there are bound to be repairs needed at some point. With today's tight economy, many think that they can just put off the repairs. Even in the safest community, there is the chance of a break-in. What would make waiting even more unfortunate is if the repairs resulted in the loss of property, or worse yet, harm to a spouse and/or children. That's why it's the best decision to act fast with any service that may be necessary.
It's a fact that a majority of home invasions occur by using the door inside a homeowner's garage. Some smart criminals even have remote controls that clone the same frequency used by the homeowner. Don't make a break-in any easier than it has to be. Bring in a professional at the first sign of trouble to address all issues involved with overhead garage door service. Crime is on the rise with so many out of work, and the desperation some criminals feel could cause fatal consequences. Garage door service is not a "home expense" worth waiting on. It's not just a matter of making the home look better having a garage door that works as it's designed. Fast garage door repairs may very well save a life. After one hour watching the local news on television, it's clear that these are not statements used to simply raise fear.
Even if a homeowner arrives home safe and gets inside without incident, there's still the chance that one, or both, of the family vehicles will be stolen late at night. Overhead garage door repair, if brought in fast, can decrease the stress, and lost work hours, involved with coming outside to find the family car missing. It's just a fact of life. In smaller communities it may seem silly to worry "too much" about crime, but the fact is - crime is everywhere. Don't be a statistic and wish that the repairs had been fixed sooner. Call in a professional not only to put in the garage door, but one that will quickly return to fix problems and help keep the family safe. Homeowners will surely sleep better at night when they can get any problem fixed fast no matter what the problem may be.
