Robbie Burns Day Story!

Here's a Robbie Burns Day story for you: while I was at Trent University (Peterborough, Ontario, Canada), at Lady Eaton College, we were all waiting in line for dinner on January 25 in 1987. For those who don't know LEC, it's all brutalist architecture and concrete, so when the piper started, it was LOUD and scared the bejasus out of all of us.

A man in a kilt walked slowly, solemnly behind the piper, carrying the haggis. They walked down the long, wide stairs into the cafeteria... and the haggis-bearer tripped.

The haggis went THBUBUBUB and half the students just ran away to the residence wing.

I think the local pizza place made a killing that night.

Did you know that crayfish display sexual dimorphism? This was shown in a lab done by the Foundations of Biodiversity class at Trent University. In this lab, the students were able to observe a number of crayfish. They determined whether the crayfish were male or female and then they measured their claws. On average, the males' claws tended to be larger than the females'.

Other studies have shown that the larger a male's claws are, the more "attractive" they are to females, which shows that claw size plays a role in sexual selection among populations of crayfish.
