The thing we know JC truly puts so much weight upon that he feels meaningless without it?#Yeah that's pretty terrifying. She hoped that Wen Ning wouldn’t feel any pain, when the time came for him to follow her. - Or, the one where Wen Qing ends up in the past and fixes the future. Kay's comments: I love stories where Wen Qing time-travels, because she's one of the few characters I love to see time-travelling! And she makes good use of her second chance as well, making sure her two younger brothers live their best lifes. I really love Wen Qing's characterization in this story and loved how the canon divergence played out. Excerpt: She jerks awake to the feeling of a solid wooden chair under her, to the stuttering of a candle. For a second, she thinks that this must still be Koi Tower, that Jin Guangshan has lied yet again. But— —the desk under her folded arms is familiar lacquered wood, as familiar as the white and red robes she’s wearing and the scattered scrolls and books she’d been sleeping on. Her office, in Yiling. In Yiling. “Fuck,” she says, and in the same breath pushes herself up, not caring that the chair clatters to the floor, that her robes aren’t in order. If this is—if she isn’t hallucinating all of this with the last sane figments of her dying brain, this is after the burning of Lotus Pier, the fall of Yunmeng-Jiang by just days. And that means Wei Wuxian and Jiang Wanyin, the core transfer—her brother. Wen Ning is alive! He has to be, even if this isn’t real. Wei Wuxian always joked about her having an iron bear trap for a mind and he isn’t really wrong; even if this is a dying hallucination, she’d have Wen Ning alive.

“Your welcome was rather disappointing, Jiang-zongzhu,” Jin Zixun calls mockingly. “Even your husband here failed to make us feel at home.” The obvious baiting is answered with a dangerously still, silent courtyard. Jin Zixun throws a glance at the three cultivators keeping Lan Wangji kneeling, chin tipped in a wordless order.

The blade hooked beneath Lan Wangji’s throat digs deeper, drawing more blood and he knows without looking that the red on the front of his robes is growing. Still no response. Lan Wangji can feel his wife’s presence, along with a handful of other qi signatures he recognizes as Jiang senior disciples. And he prays she doesn’t come out.

Jin Zixun’s grin is feral. “Very well.” But before the blade slides home and ends it all, the doors are flung wide and Jiang Cheng emerges. A silent breath escapes him. He should have known his Wanyin would not stand by. It is not in her nature.

Hair unbound and eyes flickering with Zidian’s energy, she looks like a wrathful goddess of lightning. Even where he’s forced to kneel, Lan Wangji can feel the electricity thrumming through his wrecked meridians, thinned to the point of snapping. Sandu’s naked blade gleams wickedly in one hand. And in the other, she carries their son.

She is not like his mother, bowing her head with furious acceptance of her fate and allowing her sons to be dragged away from her. She is not like her own mother, vicious in her pride and arrogance, blind to the needs of her children.

Jiang Cheng would do the impossible for those she loves. That is her strength.

Lan Wangji knows that there is no safer place for their son than in her arms.

DONGHUA LXC REPLACES HIS SWORN BROTHERHOOD IMMEDIATELY WITH JIN LING (13) AND NIE HUAISANG (USED HIM TO MURDER BY PROXY)???? DONGHUA LXC, WHAT??

Okay, so 1.) the donghua is not my jam so I've only watched a couple of episodes, so I am a poor source of information, and 2.) TECHNICALLY that is not what happens, but it's also not NOT what happens.

Basically, we get an ending montage about how everyone who isn't Wangxian is having the worst time (but that's fine because Wangxian are the only ones who matter!), and we see Jin Ling, Nie Huaisang, and Lan Xichen recreating 3zun's brotherhood oath tableau at the coffin-sealing ceremony.

Which I don't hate on its own, honestly! Immediately after this, the trio separates as a Voiceover Of Busybody Public Opinion speculates on the precarious position of Jin Ling/the Jin Clan itself (as Jin Ling himself bursts into tears upon being given Jiang Cheng's clarity bell)*, tells us LXC "needs some time to recover" (as LXC looks sad and sighs), and remarks how what a great job NHS did overseeing the ceremony (as NHS stands before the monument looking grimly satisfied).

So I think it's meant as "wow look at this fucked-up successor to the Venerated Triad" rather than something positive for anyone involved, but like. The fact that LXC is there at ALL, placidly following the lead of the guy who tricked him into murder, is... a pretty intense fumbling of the character? Even if he has zero regrets about killing JGY (a weird choice but, given that JGY tries to do an MCU villain skybeam at the temple IIRC, not fully incompatible with this canon), he's still going to feel fucked up about failing NMJ, grieve the MY that he once knew, and have zero faith in his own judgment. He's not going to be out here doing sect leader shit just a few days (days! the subs say so!) after all the temple shit goes down. It's weird! I don't like it!

*The choice to place the core reveal after the temple and have JC go into seclusion because of it is, IMO, a worse adaptation choice than literally anything in CQL on so many levels, and it has the unintended side-effect of making Donghua WWX the biggest douchebag of all time. With QS and JGY both dead and JC in seclusion, WWX is the only family Jin Ling has left in donghua canon. And yet! Donghua WWX abandons his 13-year-old nephew (who must now unpack his brand-new trauma and navigate political chaos with NO SUPPORT NETWORK WHATSOEVER BESIDES HIS THERAPY DOG) and skips merrily off into the sunset with LWJ without a second thought. Uncle of all time, truly~

#WWX at first says he's going to destroy the Stygian Tiger Seal but within the same conversation he decides to 'go home' with LWJ #does he have much of a relationship with JL? no but given that this is the guy who risked it all for the Wen remnants #bc he believed it was the right thing to do and bc he felt indebted to them for the help they provided him #he would maybe ALSO feel indebted to his flesh-and-blood nephew (twice over since he's in MXY's body!) whose parents died on his account #and maybe also feel like helping this child who just got effectively orphaned AGAIN would be the right thing to do also #but who am I to question the choices of the Morally Correct Protagonist?
