ok i know we all pretend this is a coming of age etc etc but what u guys do NOT understand about the innate INSANITY of stephen king's It is that apart from maybe the silver bullets and the slingshot and, like, the itching powder, there are not very many real weapons used in attempts to defeat It. the entire book relies on the children themselves as weapons. richie's voices, eddie's aspirator, stan's bird book, bill's tongue twister; these are things that are integral to the children, that are completely essential to their personalities. they are eleven years old!! they are eleven years old, they have little quirks just like the rest of us; their little quirks are not quirks but weaponry. they never, ever get to move on from It, from the trauma, because they themselves have been tainted from the age of fucking eleven. it doesn't matter if you forget that something rotten is inside you. even if you aren't aware of it, it's still there. you're an adult, you've left derry, and you're a talk show host like you've always wanted to be, and you're doing your voices for the world, except your voices aren't voices, they're gunpowder. you're the gun. how are the children ever supposed to live real lives, normal people lives, when they have only ever been soldiers? and not only the soldiers, but also the swords the soldiers are carrying? the story would not have been nearly as impactful if it relied on physical machinery as a method of destruction, but it doesn't. the children -- the adult children -- are themselves the only method of destruction. how do you ever go forward? how do you ever grow up? how do you ever move away?
