Hi i love your sirius/remus x animagus!reader,,, can you please write james potter x animagus(squirrel) reader?
James always carries nuts such as acorns and sunflower seeds to give her🥹❤️ just pure fluff please
made me think of that one new girl scene where nick opens jess's bedside table and finds her night peanuts
--
When Remus is instructed to fish James's scarf out of 'his bedside drawer', he reaches for the top one. Because of course he does, because who is asked to open someone's bedside drawer and chooses the bottom one? Of course James meant the top one, otherwise he would have specified the bottom one.
He does not mean the top one.
Instead of knitwear, Remus finds a disastrous array of- nuts? Nuts and raisins and berries and seeds, for god's sake, in James's top bedside drawer. Loose. Filling the entire space.
He stands frozen, hand still clutching the knob to the drawer.
"James," He says, voice calm and cool, "Why are there nuts in your nightstand?"
Sirius snickers, makes some joke about 'forgetting to put them in his pants this morning', but Remus doesn't react. He can't react, he's petrified solid in his spot by the sight of James's strange collection.
"Oh, that? That's for m'girlfriend." James answers, like it's an explanation. Like it solves the problem, like it answers Remus's many, many question; 'Oh, right! His girlfriend, that makes sense. 'Cause she's a squirrel.
"Is she a squirrel?" Remus voices his thoughts aloud, tone bitter and tight.
James's shoulders tense slightly, raising towards his ears, and he nods slowly, "Uh, yeah, actually. 'Finished the transformation last week."
Oh.
"Oh," Remus's eyes are still roving over the heap of sunflower seeds and dried cranberries but he forces himself to shut the door, "So- so, what, she sleeps in there, or something?"
James laughs, a guffaw as he grins at Remus, "Don't be ridiculous, Moony, I don't make my girlfriend sleep in my nightstand. I've been taking a handful with me to class every day so she can snack."
Only James Potter would think that sleeping would be more ridiculous than scooping a pile of nuts into his pocket every morning before class for his girlfriend who can turn into a squirrel.
"Right." Is all that Remus can manage, and he goes through the motions of retrieving James's scarf from the bottom drawer this time, "Here's your scarf, Prongs."
"Thanks, mate." James nods, catching it when Remus tosses it in his direction. He's getting ready to head down to Hogsmeade to meet with you, and Remus briefly wonders if James already has a pocket full of raisins.
"You heading down with us?" James asks, watching Remus gather his jumper, slipping it on over the white tank he'd slept in.
"No," Remus shakes his head, stuffing his feet into his shoes and ducking his head as he beelines for the door, "I'm going to the hospital wing; All of a sudden I need a cure for a headache."

sometimes your valentine is a close friend, sometimes it's a stranger on the bus, sometimes it's a secret admirer, and sometimes a secret admirer is your wooden front door cut from a tree grown by an acorn that floated across to america from greece that is actually a dryad because a god decided to fuck the hole in an oak so now it's a sentient door to your home whose wood gets harder than it already is when you peep thru its hole and comes to you in a dream to tell you that you MUST ABSOLUTELY MUST polish its knob ASAP so that it can become the demigod he was always meant to BE and protect you from your creepy landlord so for the love of goD TELL HIM HE'S A GOOD DOOR and start knocking on his wood before iT'S TOO LATE!!!!
so in summation:
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY, NEA💘💘💘
i just want you to know that i saw this immediately when you sent me it this morning and i wanted to wait to post it until more people were online because if i have to suffer through a completely UNHINGED valentine's card like this then so does all my mutuals love that for them truly
also you're absolutely insane i love you so much thank you for making me this card (& making me even more afraid of doors bless) and for being such a lovely, warm, kind presence in my life forever grateful that we bonded over roadtrips all those months ago <3

👋 Wanda
#ridspoilers - Frayed Knots - Currently under "Nymphomania"
Here we went again. I touched the knob, only to jerk back immediately. “What the-?” A thin trail of smoke curled up from the center of my palm. Cautiously, I brought it towards the knob again. Even before I came in contact with it, I could feel the tingles of electricity in the air. But I went ahead and touched it anyway. Bzzt! I stifled my howl by shoving my fist in my mouth. Oooh, that snake! She’d dropped her four-leaf clover headband over the handle on the other side, hadn’t she? Knowing full well that metal conducts good luck. I rubbed my stung hand, staring hard at the knob, and went to try it again. Before I could grasp it, Wanda yanked open the door, the clover headband now keeping the hair back from her eyes. I clenched my jaw at the tiny horseshoes dangling from her ears. A rabbit’s foot hung in the centre of her crocodile teeth-and-copper piece necklace, all but concealing her ladybug brooch. In her fist, she clenched an acorn. Our staring contest lasted hardly three wingbeats before I was forced to take two steps back. The stench of artificial fortune sent my stomach gurgling with butterflies. I twisted my mouth into something like a smile. “Well. I see you found your way home without me after all.” “I see you learned not to barge in where you’re not welcome.” I withdrew to the far side of the living area as she stalked towards the icebox. “Wanda, darling, I know you’re upset about last night…”
Send me a 👋 and a character from a fandom I'm in and I'll share a relevant WIP snippet if I have one (or a random headcanon if I don't)

So I saw some tags on a reblog of one of my fics that were like "hey how does Green know that Second has these nightmares" and uh. Now I'm writing it
Brush, brush, brush.
Spit.
He turned and wiped his mouth on a towel. It was rare for him to be sleeping this early, but after Blue and Second actually non-metaphorically killed him, he was a little tired.
Surprisingly enough, the parts where they hit him didn't hurt. They just felt...fuzzy? Kind of like TV static. He didn't feel like building anymore after that and had announced that he was going to bed. He probably needed it, anyway.
Walking to his room, he could see Second passed out on the couch. His face was against the arm of the sofa, with the rest of his body sprawled across it, a single arm dangling off the side, barely brushing against the white tiled floor. Green smiled at this. Looks like Second was just as exhausted as he was. Opening the door to his room, Green closed the curtains, tucked himself in, and drifted off to sleep.
---
"The hell..."
A light grey, pointy-eared dog had jumped onto Green's bed, and was now standing directly on top of him.
"Hey, Acorn," Green said, giving him a couple scritches. He panted very excitedly and with a lot more energy than one would expect for any diurnal creature at 1 in the morning.
The dog jumped off the bed, trotted up to the doorway, and stared at Green. "Really, dude?" Green asked. "S'like...the nightmorning. Lemme sleep."
Green began to turn away, but a heartbreaking, high-pitched whine came out from Acorn's mouth.
"...fine. But if Red finds out I'm getting you snacks past your feeding time, we're both dead meat."
Green followed the dog quite slowly, Acorn turning around every so often to make sure Green was still there. To Green's surprise, Acorn walked past the stairs to the kitchen, and up to Second's bedroom door. He sat down and stared up at Green with big, round eyes.
"Dude...Second's so asleep right now. He's probably, like, the asleepest of all of us--"
A sob.
Green turned his head in the door's direction.
He knocked lightly. "Second?"
A gasp, then silence.
"Is everything ok?"
More silence.
"I'm coming in, ok?"
He slowly turned the knob.
"Seco--"
A blanket covered all of Second except his face. His eyes were bloodshot and his irises were glowing green. A box of tissues lay sideways on his bed, tissues spilling out of it as though they were liquid. As soon as the door was opened, Acorn ran up to Second and began licking his cheek.
"H-hey--Acorn--"
Second's speech was cut off when he saw Green standing in front of him. His eyes got even wetter. He covered his face with his blanket and laid down, snuggling a plush cat close to his chest.
"...Second? It's me," Green said. "What's wrong?" he asked, slowly getting closer. As he approached, he could hear...whispering?
"It's not real it's not real it's not real it's not real it's not real it's not real it's not re--"
"Second?"
A yelp.
"It's me, Gree--"
"Go away!"
...Huh?
"I...I killed you...you're not real."
Oh.
Oh.
"S-Second...I respawned. I'm safe. Everything's gonna be ok."
But alas, Green's words did nothing, as Second's sobs began again.
"I'm sorry," he cried. "I wish I didn't kill you. I don't know what's wrong with me. I wish you were sti--"
Green smacked him.
Second touched the part that he smacked while staring at him.
"You're...alive."
"Yes, I am. Now can you please explain what happened?"
Second's eyes shifted to the side. Were they slightly less green than before?
"U-um...do you remember today when I...?"
"Yeah."
"That, but...over and over again."
Ah.
That...sounds bad.
Green sat down on the bed next to him. "S'ok," he said, pulling him into a hug. "I know you didn't mean it."
Second returned the hug, almost dragging Green downwards. Green pulled back slightly, his face inches away from Second's. "If anything like this happens again, lemme know, ok? I love you. I don't want you to be sad."
Second flushed, realising how close he was to Green. "U-um...ok."
For the rest of the night, they laid in the same bed, snuggling, but not before two sentences were spoken:
"I love you, Green."
"I love you too."

Graham, freshly moved in with any villager of choice, “I’m your new neighbour and I got locked out, help!” Or a guard version if the king locked himself out of his bedroom by mistake, and he can’t keep guiltily taking guest rooms. Breaking and entering may occur.
He is King Edward the Benevolant’s Knight Hopeful, the champion of the tournament, the knight who traveled from Llewdor to Daventry in hopes of becoming a part of the king’s court.
And he was locked out.
This… this was embarrassing, to put it lightly.
It was one thing when he was traveling from inn to inn to be locked out of a room… it was another when he was locked out of his own room from within the castle.
Graham paced back and forth in the hallway, contemplating his options. Asking the guards for help was simply out of the question, he couldn’t have word spread that the new knight was a klutz (though he already heard those slight whispers from the maids after a tumble down the stairs he did once while not paying attention to the way his cape was fluttering just nicely under his boot). Asking for either Acorn or Whisper’s help felt… wrong. Not because he couldn’t ask them to, he knew the two would be able to, especially Acorn, but because it felt like this was his problem to solve on his own.
He could, theoretically, go to town, rent an inn for the night, and deal with the consequences in the morning or even ask veeeeeeeeeery nicely one of the villagers to crash at their place, probably ask Wente more specifically as he was the literal embodiment of compassion (that and the smell of baked goods was always favorable over the smell of metal or potions).
Zards, this was embarrassing. He halted and put his hands over his eyes. Deep breaths, Graham, deeeeeep breaths. You got this. You solved many puzzles before in the past, this is no different. Surely.
After about three hours and several broken pieces of metal that littered around Graham, it was official. This is past puzzle territory and more into breaking and entering territory.
He slammed his forehead repeatedly against the door, as the knife he took from the kitchen snapped in the keyhole. Thieves made this look easy. Pirates made this look easy. Hell, Chester made this look easy. Why was trying to pick a lock so difficult for Graham?! He grumbled a curse under his breath as he kept tugging the knob and jiggle the handle of the knife when he heard the telltale sound of a throat clearing that made Graham’s blood freeze.
He knows that tone, he knows the dry and sarcastic clearing anywhere. Of all the guards to stumble on his predicament, why oh why did it have to be him?
Slowly, Graham turned his head and looked at the guard in question, sheepishly waving his hand with an undoubtedly goofy grin on his face.
“Ah… hi, Number One.” Graham greeted. “Wh… what brings you here?”
“I could ask the same of you, Pockets.” Number One remarked, his arms crossed. “I was asked by the chef in regards to missing cutlery and followed up on a noise complaint by one of the maids in this area. And lo and behold, here you are. So I ask you again, what brings you here.”
‘Oh, is it not obvious?’ He thought. ‘I’m your new neighbor and I got locked out, help!’
“Well… um.” Graham tapped his fingers on his thigh, his lips pressed tightly as he thought of a proper response that would, at least, lessen Number One’s sarcasm. “I appear to have lost my key to my room.”
“And you resorted to stealing knives and committing the acts of breaking and entering.”
“It’s not really breaking and entering if it’s my own room, right?”
“With that logic, no, I suppose not.” Number One conceded.
Graham sat up a little straighter, prideful that he got this one up on the captain.
“However, this isn’t your room.”
And just like that, Graham felt himself deflate.
“Come again?”
“That’s not your room.” Number One reiterated. “In fact, this hallway isn’t the sleeping quarters.
“...It’s not?”
At that, Number One sighed deeply. “No, it’s not, Pockets. You’d know this if you paid attention during the initial tour.”
“How was I supposed to memorize an entire layout from one tour?” Graham pouted.
“I asked the same thing, you insisted you have a photographic memory.”
Graham blushed deeply. He… he did say that. And it was to get to his room quickly to catch his breath that he won the tournament. What in the stars name was he thinking of not taking up Number One on a follow up tour?!
“You uh… I guess you have a photographic memory, huh, Number One?” He laughed, absolutely embarrassed with himself.
“I just pay attention.”
“Rrrrright.” Graham looked at the door for a moment, seeing the various scratches from his attempted breaking and entering before pointing at it and looking at Number One. “So uh… what’s in this room?”
“Number Two’s office.” Number One answered with certainty. “Now, if you would like to know where your sleeping quarters are, I’d be more than happy to assist you with that as well as give you another quick tour of the castle.”
“Oh! Great, I uh… I’d appreciate that.” Graham smiled, standing up and brushing the dirt off of him.
Number One hummed a bit before tilting his head slightly. “Is there anything else I should be aware about, Pockets?”
“No no, that’s all. I do appreciate the second tour… could use a refresher of the areas in the castle if um… if it’s not an inconvenience to you.”
“It’s not.”
“G-good. Good to know.”
The two stood there in silence as Graham sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. Number One, once more sighed.
“You lost the key to your room as well.”
“Yeah.”
“Heaven help me…” Number One muttered.

This is random but like here’s some hc about the TR boys sfw kinda fluffy? Bit ooc so I apologize if it sounds cringey
Mikey- although he’s in a gang and understands the significance of having tattoos and piercings he can’t get them. Like mf is TERRIFIED of needles he fights the doctors when getting his flu shot. But as time went on he didn’t care about it hurting because he’s just numb
Draken- he’s one of the best smelling characters. The girls at the brothel taught him that taking care of yourself and smelling fucking good is not bad.
Takemichi- I don’t know why but he loved collecting acorns as a kid.
Mitsuya- he collects small hello kitty figurines. Yk the machines where you put a coin in and you twist the knob? Yeah those. Why? 0 idea
Hakkai- all the TR boys are millennials but I’m convinced Hakkai was supposed to be the sticky iPad kid. I love him I do but put this guy in front of an ipad, computer or T.V. He’s entranced
Baji- is great when it comes to science. He doesn’t even know himself but he just grasps it the easiest.
Chifuyu- he over feeds peke j. Like ALOT when I tell you that cat eats better than me and you combined I mean it. He will go out of his way to find raw fresh fish at the supermarket.
Kazutora -when he was in jail he did work out quite a bit but he also got crazy good at cooking? He can make anything and it’ll taste good.
Smiley- he spontaneously dyed his hair blue once to match angry and play a prank on him saying he’s the actual angry not him. It almost worked because they were 12 and it was at 3 am
Angry- nearly perfect attendance throughout all of school. Same with work has almost never missed a day or call out
Hanama- quite literally wrote his tattoos with a big sharpie and he was like “yeah this, this is dope.” And got it tattooed within the hour
Inui- he loves his heels and heels in general. That being said he takes good care of them. Not just that but if you break one he will beat your ass to a pulp. Like it’s legitimately his trigger.
Koko- he hates goldfish with his entire heart. There’s no tragic story or anything he just fucking hates them. (It’s the animal not the food.)
Sanzu- he’s pretty and he’s aware he has feminine features. He has used this to his advantage….basically what I’m saying is he’s scammed numerous men out of half their savings :)
Ran- okay I think ran likes to party but he doesn’t do drugs, or smoke, he drinks but smoking is something he does when he’s stressed. But ran is pretty “clean cut” guy. He loves his tattoos but that’s because him and his brother match yk? If Ran didn’t have rindou he probably never would have gotten them.
Rindou- he loves tattoos, he thinks it’s just cool how you can make art on a body. He wants more but can’t fucking make up his mind where the placement should be. He’s frustrated about this half the time cuz he’s canceled six appointments with his artist bc he doesn’t know where.
Shinchiro- hates whales. He has a pretty mysterious aura and personality about him and he doesn’t talk much about himself but he will let you know he hates whales. Why? Again no idea.
Takeomi- the scar? He ran into the corner of a wall. I’m convinced this is how it happened
Benkei- he’s fucking hilarious like at first when you meet him he’s quiet and intimidating but once he’s used to you he’s cracks jokes so much your stomach will hurt.
Wakasa- isn’t actually all that apathetic or “emotionless”. Same with rin both of them are constantly overthinking. wakasa is anxious half the time so instead of smoking he sucks on lollipops.
Bonus
omg HELLO !! hehe i love all of these ☹️ the mikey “as time went on he didn’t care about it cause he became numb to it” ☹️☹️☹️☹️ takemichi with the acorns LMAO 💀 also i really liked rindou n ran’s </3 i could see that for sure—and haruchiyo’s is canon 100% LMAO he so took advantage of that

Bringing a World of Adventure Hunting in to Your Home
Not everyone is not living in a position to wander the woods, desert, beach or ruins. I had that situation at one point in my life. And yes its depressing. And when you read others doing all these things its can really get to you. However there are a huge number of things yo CAN do to counteract the depression. Lets visit a good many of these things:
1) Everyone’s first Go-to is Roleplaying. Be its table-top or online. But not all Online games bring out the true desire to adventure, as they are limited to telling a specific story. As such I suggest avoiding using game maps and make you own real maps. Right down and study any runes in the game, study the magic tech in the game, write side stories of your character that can not be done in game. Create a history to the character you made. Some games are limited what you character looks like. Draw your own character and hang it by your game station.
2) If you have adventure wear, wear it about the house/apartment. Does not have to be all of it. Boots, a shirt, a vest, tunic, wristbands, cloak
3) If you  have the money and talent turn kitchen into a tavern or saloon, line shelfs with bottles and plates and other tavern/saloon wear. Avoid cheese props. Study movie sets and get ideas from that.
4) Likewise turn your bedroom into an Inn room. Go ristic and simple with natural colors and materials
5) Burn in a cauldron or censor wood chips, herbs and incense,
6) Hang posters of nature about the walls in natural wood frames. If you can obtain some old wood window frames, you that as your poster frames. If possible find images of nature on line and print them out. Try to make all the images co-inside, so its looks like you are looking out into the same view. Change the posters with the seasons if possible
7) Place realistic life-size animals about your home: Snake, turtle, mice, birds, chipmunks, insects. If you have a ficus tree or a cluster of plants, place a birds nest with eggs in it
8) Play sound effects and ambient sounds in the house. Youtibe and other sites have a plethora of ambiance and sounds from cave to camp sites, tavern sounds, market squares, pirate ships, forests
9) Add a fountain/s in your home. Fountain pumps can be bought anywhere these days,
10) Terrariums! Make them and add them to your home. Even of the plants are fake
11) Aquariums! If your adventurous aestheic love is the see or any water setting like ponds, these are fantastic to have. And do not limit yourself to just fish: Crabs, snails, turtles, frogs, lizards, snakes. Even if you are not allowed to have pes, build an aquarium anywhere. The flow of the water from the filtar moving the plants can lend to the imagination
12) Wood, tin and copper and wrought iron objects
13) Leather bound books. Line a shelf with them,
14) Candles and lanterns. Some people can not have things where they live for safety mode. Even if you never burn them, have a cluster of candles anyway. Just the look of lanterns and candles plays with the mind. You can also invest in battery ones but I think they are silly looking
15) Bowls of fruit: Wood bowls and real fruits and nuts about the house.
16) Seasonal and year round garlands and wreaths about the house. Clusters of ferns. If you do not have a green thumb, go fake if need be. Ferns and spider plans are my fave.
17) Drift wood and moss covered wood.
18) If you have your own Adventure clothes and gear do not bury it in a closet. Get a mannequin and display it,
19) Fur, leather, blankets, wool, sheepskin throws and pillows.
20) Banners and tapestries
21) Invest in a couple of mortar & pestle sets, one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom is you have the room. (Confession: I collect them)
22) Hang herbs and dry plants in the kitchen.
23) Clay pots and assorted pottery about the house. Try to sick with OLD looking styles. Check out some sites or books on ancient styles for an idea
24) Antlers add a wonderful feel to ambience. Even if fake. Now they are made into door handles, draw knobs and so much more. (DO NO go hung deer and elk JUST for their racks)
25) Bowls and vases of snail shells, acorns, pine cones,
26) Rolls and displays of maps,
17) Glass and Ceramic bottles: Display a few or better yet, use them! fill them with shampoos, liquid soaps, drinks and what ever else you use and look at daily
18) Old style dip pens and ink vials on your desk along with scrolls of parchment and an old leather bound journal,
19) Color glass baubles like the ones at christmas time and “witch balls” These are great if your Aesthetic is the sea or in the Witchy profession,
20) Wood wand display. Not talking about Harry Potter here. Do a little reserach and find or make a REAL one. Display it on your desk or mantle staff. If you have a set, even better.
21) A Statue of an ancient god,
22) Baskets and wicker to hold things
23) Metal goblets and drinking horns
24) If you have one or several hand your shields on the walls,
25) Oil hurricane lamps,
24) Hang and display Gourds about. If you know how to carve and stain gourds, all the better,
25) Birds houses. In the house?? Sure, why not?
26) Feathers. Sometimes just a vase of ling feathers helps. If they are feathers you find in your walks, just as better. Each one has a story
28) Bowls of rocks. Not only does this bring the natural world in but its said that a bowl of rocks by the door and window wards off negativity.
29) Old wood boxes. Just do not collect them but USE them. put whatever in them as storage. Afraid you will forget what’s in it??? All the better. There is your treasure at the end of your search.
30) Corn dollies. These folk cultural dolls and designs have their roots into the ancient world. a display of them, especially during the late summer, really invokes the harvest season
31) Ceramic and wood bake ware in the kitchen. Ads a rustic tavern feel. This could include   bread boards and bowls, wood spoons, rolling pins,
32) Replace DVD covers with parchment or wood texture covers. Sometimes a wall of game and DVD cases can kill an ambiance you are striving for. If you can not print out all these coves, hang a tapestry over your shelf unit or add wood shutter doors
33) Cover your library of bright color books with leather, paper of plether, No access to leather? See of someone has an old leather jacket they are ditching you can cut up
34) Wood flutes, harps, ocarinas, pan pips, lyres and rustic drums add to a great tavern-ish display.
35) A tall vase of cattails gives ambiance for this that over adventures in places like rivers and lakes,
36) If you have a collection of crystals, sea glass and gemstones, show them off in a wood box or basket,
37) Halloween Witch bottles add to the adventure appel. (I have a buhnch and have all my teas in them,
38) Fancy yourself an Librarian or treasure seeker? Have a display of “artifacts” like (potters, tiles, scales, bones, glass, wood), Find some broken pottery shards and make them look like Greek pottery. If you sculpt make a remnant of a state or a bone or prehistoric tooth. Create your own artifacts and put stories to them.
39) Hang a bunch of leather sachets and small bags from a hook or sit them on a shelf,
40) Find yourself a rustic tea set,
41) Collect vintage clay and wood tops. Tops have been around since ancient Assyria and Babylon.
42) Display a collection of carving tools or depending on your likes, a small anvil and hammer,
43) Hand on hoots of rack by your door or wall woven wicker hats, leather caps and witch/witch hat, head wreaths,
44) Display an old stick/straw/grass broom head wreaths,
45) Display a helm or helmet you have in a place that speaks “I am at the ready”
46) Fold a small stack of old burlap bags and place on a shelf and use them to store things like potatoes and onions,
47) Display and basket of wood knitting needles and wool,
48) Grow plants, flowers, herbs and small trees. Even small pots of just grass adds a sense of nature and Adventure (The ancient Greeks would grow grass for their New Years Eve celebration) I have lemon trees in my windows I grew from seeds.
49) A Fish Net works great to add an aesthetic look to your space.
50) If nothing more find an artist and have him/her draw your aesthetic self as you see yourself in different poses, gear and situations. Blow thing up power size and hang them about your space
51) If you can not do any of this, create a physical scrap book of pictures and images that’s screams your aesthetic ideals. Visit it daily and add to it.
NOTE: While all these ideas are great starts, DO NOT over do it. Less is more. Rustic and simple. Avoid cheesy plastic props and things like signs screaming “I am a Proud Viking!” Investigate films, movies and history into your aesthetic loves and the world behind it. Do not create clutter. Make you space livable and function to your NEEDS. Make you space your home, not a museum. If your space is cluttered and does not bring you a feel of your Aesthetic feelings you may need to pull back on some of your props.

19, and you know I'm gonna ask for Kataang lol.......
Oh gawd I was dreading 19
Hurt/comfort prompt: (Kataang + #19: “Don’t touch me!”)
Even the Trees Remember (AO3)
Words: 1,990
Rating: T
************************************
“He said it would make me forget!” Aang flung his arm, and another wave of reckless airbending cut through what remained of the tree. The winded blade gulped the air out of Katara’s ears in a strange way that made them pop. “He lied! Why did he lie to me?!”
Katara chased after him. It was hard to track Aang’s silhouette with only half a moon to light her way. Orange and yellow robes were her burning waypoint; churned earth and splintered tree corpses lined the warpath in Aang’s wake.
“Aang!”
Aang didn’t look at her. Katara wasn’t sure if he could even hear her. Crimson colored his face with furious sorrow; his every breath tore a howling cry from the wounded beast hiding in the cage of his soul.
“Sokka said it would make me forget, but it doesn’t! He lied! It doesn’t help anything!”
Aang staggered against a tree. He cut it down with a careless saber of wind that Katara had to duck for fear of losing her head. The tree groaned once, like it was bemoaning the Avatar’s betrayal of nature, before its severed half toppled through a dozen other canopies to the ground.
“Aang, you need to calm down! Please! You need to stop before you get hurt!”
Aang finally looked at her. His eyes, wide and wet and searching for something that wasn’t there, cut her open so deeply that Katara almost clutched her chest to stem the bleeding. Grief like she hadn’t seen since they visited the Southern Air Temple weighed Aang down in heavy chains. A mountain of self-loathing sat on his shoulders, and his broken heart poured rivers down his cheeks.
There was a pause in his destruction—Katara wasn’t going to pass up the chance. She approached him like he was a wild catdeer, and she tried to ignore the way he trembled and flinched from her every footstep like he really was one.
Aang’s voice was the squeak of a machine about to break. “Sokka...He said it would m-make me forget...” He curled into himself. “Sokka said...H-He said it would…He…so f-forget and…a-and...”
Katara hushed and cooed him, and she tried so very hard to suppress the bloodlust burning under her skin when she smelled the alcohol on his breath.
She was going to have words with her brother.
“Aang, it’s okay. You’re okay. Sokka is a moron and doesn’t know what he’s talking about. C’mere,” she offered her hand to him, “let’s go home, okay?”
“Can’t...Can’t go home…”
“Why not?”
“Can’t remember...Can’t remember home...Gyatso...I can’t remember…” Aang hugged himself, and it took every ounce of Katara’s restraint not to pull him into her arms. “I can’t forget, but I can’t remember, either. I can’t take it anymore. I want it to go away. I...I-I just—W-Were those good times even real? Is this even real?” He looked at her, begging her for something she couldn’t give him. His voice broke and shattered Katara’s heart. “Are you even real?”
Katara swallowed. “Oh, Aang…”
Aang dropped to his knees and cradled his head like a bomb was about to drop. “I wanna forget...I wanna forget so bad—I-I just can’t remember anymore…” He pressed his brow to the grass. “I’m trying...I-I’m trying…”
“Aang—”
“Don’t touch me!” He didn’t want to know the answer to whether or not she was real. He couldn’t take it if she wasn’t.
Katara swallowed the burning in her throat and steeled her shaky resolve into iron.
“Lemme—Lemme go!” Aang squirmed like a newborn and whined and flailed just as loudly, but Katara didn’t let up her grip under his arms. She dragged him to one of the trees he cut down and sat them like its fresh stump was a dining table.
“Look,” Katara said. Aang tried to get up, but Katara wouldn’t let go of his hand. “Look, Aang.”
“Look at what?” His voice was something worse than desperate. He slumped, the life and fight flushing out of him. “There’s nothin’ to see—I can’t remember—”
“You do remember.” Katara spoke as gently as she held his hand. Aang sniffled and made himself smaller than he was. Katara kissed his knuckles and massaged the tender belly of his palm—the most precious part of a bender—until his breathing slowed.
He didn’t stop crying. The burning knot in Katara’s throat didn’t stop growing, either.
“Oh, Aang…” She leaned over the stump so that her elbows rested on it. She held his hand in hers and peppered it with more kisses until he dragged his eyes up to hers.
His eyes were empty and endless like a dry well that stretched on forever.
He looked so alone.
So incredibly alone.
Like he had spent those hundred years in the ice awake and without even Appa to keep him company.
“I—I-I can’t remember, K’tara...I can’t...I can’t, but I can’t forget, either…”
Katara soothed him with gentle coos and hushes. “I know, sweetie. I know.” She held his hand tighter. “It hurts. I know it must hurt you so much it feels unbearable.” She cradled his face with her free hand. She tried to ignore the dagger in her heart that made every part of her ache when he first flinched, taking a second to recognize her touch before pressing so desperately into her that it wouldn’t be a stretch to believe that he hadn’t felt a loving touch in years. “But you do remember. You haven’t forgotten anything.”
Aang cocked his head like a hound to a high pitch. It would have been cute if it didn’t make Katara fight the urge to cry with him. “I...I haven’t?”
“No, you haven’t. Not really.” Katara tapped the rings lining the inner belly of the once large tree. “See this ring? And how narrow it is?”
“...m’yeah.”
“These rings are thin and remember a long drought. These rings are further apart and remember a bad flood.”
Katara moved Aang’s hand over the stump’s memories. He flinched when the pads of his fingers brushed the grainy, black knobs curling crooked lightning through the wood.
“This is a scar from a fire that burned through this forest a century ago. The scar is near the center—when the tree was very young—but the tree grew around it and made its scars a part of itself. From the outside, you could never tell that it happened, like maybe the tree forgot. But it remembers both all the good and all the bad. The bad didn’t stop it from growing.”
Aang wiped his eyes, and something more lost than thoughtful pinched his face in a scowl.
The night air hummed its silence, void of the many patterings of small animals and other creatures scared away from the Avatar’s grieving. Aang’s hand was cold in Katara’s. That wasn’t right at all. Aang was never cold, out or in.
Katara kissed his knuckles, reveled in the shadow of a smile she pulled from him, rubbed some warmth back into his fingers, and looked at him even though it made some part of her howl and claw her insides in its desperation to pull him closer.
Katara laid his hand flat on the stump of tree-rings and forest memories. She held his palm up and traced her finger down a dozen calluses and twice as many scars.
“See this?” Katara spoke softly and traced his palm even softer. Her voice was hushed and cloudy, her words warm and wrapping around him like a hug. “This is your love line. You see how deep it is, especially in the beginning?”
“...Yeah.”
“This over here is your life line. It’s just as deep in the beginning. They’re both broken in a few places, though. One a bit more than the other. But that’s okay. Look at the top, here. The lines double back over to compensate for the breaks, and they double and triple at the ends.” She tapped the tree’s rings. “See? Even the trees remember. And you do, too.”
“So...So I’m a tree?” Aang looked so incredibly lost, even though they were in his own home.
Katara laughed, the sound hollow and dying like a candle in a harsh breeze. “No, you dork, you’re not a tree. But you remember, just like they do.” She smiled, and the gesture called his out to play even though he didn’t understand why. “Nothing is ever forgotten or gone for good. I know you remember why, Aang.”
Now Aang looked truly lost and more desperate, but hopeful, than ever. “I...I do?”
Katara’s smile stretched a little wider as she curled his hand shut.
Aang blinked at her dumbly. He opened his fist like it was buried treasure he had stumbled upon. He nearly dropped the smooth little acorn resting between a callous and his life line.
Aang smiled. He sagged like a deflating war balloon, like his insides were more slush than bone. His heart tugged its seams back together, just a bit, and his mourning joy leaked over his cheeks.
Aang laughed. The bubbles of giggles were lost, knowing not where they came from or why, but they grew in volume just as he opened his posture like he was going to hug her.
But Katara was already at his side, brushing them together. He was still cold, so Katara scooted closer and warmed him with tender touches and even more tender words. Aang couldn’t hear them, but they dug into the deepest parts of him and soothed the wounded beast limping out of the cage of his soul. Katara nuzzled her face to his, and his widening smile and even louder laughs pulled out the coal searing a hole in her throat. Her broken heart danced when he returned her affections, and the corner of her soul that he had claimed for himself cuddled, like her, into the arm wrapped around her shoulders.
Katara laced her fingers with Aang’s and was gentle with him as though he were burned and bleeding. With her other hand, she guided him into a kiss, and her love line cradled the curve of his jaw.
Aang smiled like a supernova and had Katara tugged into the space between his legs and pulled flush against his chest in the next second. She laughed along with him. Or maybe he was laughing with her? It didn’t matter. Aang paraded his joy in small kisses on whatever his lips could reach.
Aang mumbled into her hair and held her tight like he might lose her. “Thank you, Katara.” His voice was quiet, like it was a thought he was sharing with her. “For everything.”
Katara wormed her way out of her Aang-cocoon just enough to kiss his cheek. “For you, my Forever Boy? Always.”
Aang pressed his smile to her temple, and his laugh shook into her from where they were pressed together. His glee was genuine and warmed Katara from head to toe like she was sitting in front of a fire during a blizzard.
Katara pulled his arms even tighter around herself, but, somehow, she made it feel like she was hugging and holding him, instead.
The night hummed its peace in a gentle buzz, holding an undercurrent of shy animals creeping back to their homes. Aang cuddled closer to his home, too, and Katara molded into him like she was a foundation that could protect him through any storm.
“I love you, you dork,” she said in a voice so quiet it reached Aang like a thought. “And I’m not going anywhere.” The pressure in the air grew lighter. Aang sagged like the brace forcing him to bend into something that he wasn’t was suddenly ripped away.
And then he smiled like being happy was what his face was built for.
And Katara’s kiss was a promise and a bandage all in one.
“I love you...And I’ll make sure you never forget it.”
