"Those who persist in wearing secularistic lenses have eyes and do not see, have ears and do not hear. For the Bible cannot be understood except in an attitude of humble receptivity, that is, "on one's knees," (as Kierkegaard puts it). So-called "biblical" scholars may know Aramaic and Greek but nevertheless radically misunderstand the divine message because of their "scholarship" has warped their faith. A tacit refusal to receive God's message―because of intellectual pride―is punished by blindness. . . . “But if holiness is the fulfillment of your God-given identity, then only by His grace will you become who you were created to be. Your gifts, talents, and other qualities do not need to be suppressed in order to follow Him. In fact, He may desire to use those gifts for a greater purpose than you ever imagined!

Choosing to live a godly life is something you should do for your sake and for the sake of the world. A great deal rests upon whether or not you say yes to God-not just once, but daily. In her book The Privilege of Being a Woman, Dr. Alice von Hildebrand reminds women:

As long as women are faithful to their "religious" calling the world is safe. But the threat menacing us today is precisely the metaphysical revolt of feminists who have totally lost sight of their vocation because they have become blind to the supernatural.

When women lose sight of their call to holiness, the entire world misses out. If you're going to help save the world (you mistakenly think we're exaggerating), begin by taking the time to make an inventory of your spiritual life. Ask yourself:

Am I interested in pleasing God, or am I trying to please myself while hopefully not offending Him?

Am I more concerned with being accepted by men or being accepted by God?

• Whose heart am I trying to win?

Am I waiting for God, or is God waiting for me?

Also, look at your daily habits, and compare the amount of time and energy you spend on your physical appearance compared to the amount of effort you spend on beautifying your soul. There's no problem with looking gorgeous. Just make sure your soul matches the rest of you.

Perhaps it's time to give your spiritual life a makeover. If you used to have a devotional life of prayer, get back in the habit. If you've never been particularly religious, don't be afraid to deepen your interior life. God isn’t hard to find. You’re probably the one who has been playing hard to get!”

The call

“Every woman is called to be a mother.”

The first time I heard a Mother’s Day sermon drop that line, I was in my early 20’s, in church with a couple of friends. One of whom was absolutely gutted by it.

She was in tears as the preacher went on about moms and kids. I asked her if she was okay. She said, “No. I can’t have kids.” Then got up and left during the sermon.

Here’s how that happens.

When we see something one way, when we experience something one way, especially if it’s the first time we run into it, especially if we grew up with it, there’s something in us that wants to lock it down. There’s something in us that says, “that’s it, that’s the only way it can happen.”

Anything else that doesn’t match up with that locked down version? It doesn’t count. No matter how close it might be, how good and needful it is, even if it’s objectively better? It does not matter. Because it doesn’t exactly, perfectly fit that locked down version.

When it comes to things like my wife’s pumpkin pie? I’m okay with that. I mean, there’s a reason why it’s the locked down version. It’s that good.

If you and I are doing that with pie, it’s probably not a big deal. The problem comes when we start locking down people and locking down ideas.

And all of us do lock down people and ideas. Most of the time, we’re not even aware that we’re doing it.

Your reaction when I said, “every woman is called to be a mother?” Whatever it was, that’s where it comes from – from that locked down version of what it means to be a mother that each of us has.

Maybe you’re like my friend, who saw motherhood one way (mom plus kids) and locked it down. And that locked down view of motherhood tore her apart.

Because she didn’t match up with that locked down version of being a mother? In her own eyes, she didn’t count. She wasn’t good enough.

Think about it for a second. Even if the only way to be a mother is to have kids at home, that version of being a mother changes radically over the years. Being the mother of newborn is very different from being the mother of a two-year-old is very different from being the mother of a six-year-old is very different from being the mother of a teenager.

And what happens when they move out? What happens when they’ve got kids of their own? What happens when you’re the mother of a 40-year-old?

Does that mean you’re not a mother anymore? A moment’s thought tells us the answer is no.

But you and I don’t think, we react – relying on what we’ve locked down. And a lot of us have locked down being a mother as mom plus kids, with the “real” version of that being mom plus kids at home.

Which is why a lot of good, loving moms struggle when the kids grow up and move out.

The thing is, that version of being a mother isn’t the heart of being a mother. It’s good. It’s important. It’s invaluable. It’s holy. The mom plus kids at home version is one way that the charism of being a mother is lived. But it’s not the only one.

Behind that version of being a mother, at the heart of every version of being a mother, is the true charism of spiritual motherhood. Spiritual motherhood is the motherhood that all women are called to, in a world full of people who (in the words of Alice von Hildebrand) “are desperately looking for a mother.”

What does that even mean? It means that every day you are surrounded by people who need help. Who need to be heard. Who need to know that someone cares. Who need to be loved.

People who need some mom in their lives.  

And you’re thinking, “I could never do that, I don’t know how to that. What if I get it wrong? What if I can’t help them?”

If that’s what you’re thinking, you’re being way too hard on yourself. God didn’t call you to fix anything or anyone. Or to be responsible for how it all works out. God is calling you to be a mother, not God.

God is the one responsible for eternity. God is responsible for how it all works out. Not you.

Your call (as Caitlyn Pszonka* says) “is to be a mother to whoever God calls you to serve.” Whether it’s taking care of an elderly relative or getting groceries for a neighbor. Listening to a co-worker who needs to be heard or being with someone who just got the diagnosis were afraid of. Watching a friend’s kids or taking the call at 2 in the morning.

God will give you the grace to be a spiritual mother to them. Whether God sends them to you for a moment or for a lifetime.

God is calling you to see the person not the problem.

And God will give you the courage to do it.

God is calling you to hear the one who needs to be heard.

And God will give you the grace to do it.

God is calling you to let them know that someone cares.

And God will give you the compassion to do it.

God is calling you to love.

And God will give you the heart to do it.

Go. Be the mother that God is calling you to be.
