Sry but ur opinions on black and white are ruining my day and I had to speak up- the unova region was such a serve and the city designs were so pretty. Don’t even get me started on the battle animations they were so good 😭 The 3D movements with the pixelated retro feel was just amazing. (also Serperior? Darmanitan? Fusing legendaries? Gothitelle? The spiral staircases?)

Sorry I have mixed feelings on something you love. Honestly I think that Black and White have a lot of interesting stuff going on and I'd be here forever if I went into full detail on explaining my opinion in full - I do actually plan on doing video essays on the whole main series at some point, so maybe then.

I feel pretty weird about my position on this one because I love a lot about these games but they're not my personal favourites, which has me in a weird position where I don't entirely agree with anyone on them.

In the meantime, to address each of the points you made here:

-Aesthetically I like Unova a lot. Maybe the most of any of the regions, it's top tier at the very least. My problem with Unova (in BW anyway, it's been too long for me to remember how it was in BW2) is in how you progress through it. I know the linearity of it has been discussed to death but what really bothers me (and this has been true of a lot of subsequent games too) is how little it lets you actuakly explore it. The moment you've hit any major story milestone there is usually someone right there to tell you where your next objective is. I like actually being able to stumble onto my plot progression and find secrets in the process. I also don't like how restrictive the wild Pokemon options are borh in the earliest stages of the game and in how many of the best ones are locked off until absurdly late. This also makes navigating any of the optional areas restrictive because of the HMs required and the lack of water type options. The only gen 5 water type I'd want to use in a regular playthrough is Jellicent, and then I'm either doubling up with the several excellent Ghost types or just deliberately not using any of the others.

-The battle animations are also something I have mixed feelings about. While I do think they're a lot more visually dynamic and interesting to look at than the static sprites of previous gens, as a sprite artist it bothers me a lot how many parts of them are manipulated without any regard for how it warps the sprite. The individual frames of the sprite aren't generally redrawn, they're stretched or rotated, which sometimes leads to some really off-looking animations. The way some of themcare manipulated also conveys the weight of some Pokemon in weird ways. I fully appreciate how much time it would have taken to animate new frames for every single Pokemon and this is a good compromise but I've never actually been the biggest fan of how it looks. That said, applying the same technique to the region allows for some really good scenes, including the whole spiral staircase thing you mentioned (also true of DPP to a lesser degree).

-Every generation has some good Pokemon. I don't know why you'd think pointing out a few of your favourites in this one would sway me. Also, Darmanitan and Gothitelle? To each their own but like. Those are the first ones that came to mind to sell gen 5? (No shade for Serperior tho that guy rules)

-I literally invented homosexuality back in nineteen-aught-seven, thank you very much.

some miscellaneous reviews:

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster: a straightforward Frankenstein retelling with a twist in the last minute that sort of undermines the message. I was hoping for a subversion on the tragedy, if you count the last minute it is, but it's brutal getting there. Vicaria you deserve the world.

Jules 2023: very chill and tender story about an old man whose gardenias are smashed by a broken flying saucer. Ben Kingsley fades into the role, his co-stars are equally touching.

I May Destroy You: binged in a daze. lots of involuntary crying. not ready to review it yet. besides it's too dense, you'd have to go chapter by chapter or character by character. I think i'll rewatch it later in the year or next year while trying to not smash the next episode button and let it breathe.

Something in the dirt: if you go in knowing that it's a lockdown indie film by two friends about the nature of conspiracy thinking: it's a really fun watch... but if you don't I could totally understand not enjoying the way the film jumps around and presents itself as a fake documentary about a fake documentary. It's character based storytelling which refuses to answer the central mystery.

The Creator: incredible visuals and worldbuilding, top tier character design and cinematography but there's no fully fleshed character under that. It reminds me a lot of The Fall by Tarsem: the visual storytelling is incredible but without the human story to latch on to, it's maddening because that design work would be amazing in service to a good plot. I don't know how to appreciate aesthetics for aesthetics alone and it's something I wish i could cultivate. Both films feel incomplete and hollow while also full of fantastic imagery but maybe expecting solid story is impeding the ability to just enjoy moving pictures for what they are.

The Watermelon Woman: I felt deeply let down that the watermelon woman wasn't a real historical figure but that's the point, you're supposed to yearn for the lost stories people didn't think were worth telling. Even though the last video store shut down over a decade ago so it's obviously a culture long gone, these women felt more real than most films or TV I've seen in a long while. Not that makes them likeable and understandable. That too is kind of the point.

REVIEW: Jurassic World Escape Room Experience at Universal Orlando Resort | by Muzzammil Shaik

The Jurassic World Escape Room in Universal's Great Movie-Escape is one of two new escape room experiences to the Universal Orlando Resort that opened in December 2022. Located in CityWalk, it is a multi-sensory puzzle-based quest that gives guests the role as geneticists at the Jurassic World theme park, timed around the events of the 2015 film. This review will consist of a non-spoiler portion where I give my general overview on the experience and recommendations for the escape room as well as a spoiler-review that consists of the overview around each puzzle and story elements that tie into the larger Jurassic lore at hand.

Non-Spoiler Review

Making the Reservation/Check-In

Signing up for the escape room was relatively straight-forward as you navigate to the elaborate Universal Great Movie Escape entrance located right next to the Antojito's restaurant in CityWalk. As soon as you enter, there is a check-in right at the end of the hall where you can make your reservations to either the Jurassic World or Back to the Future Escape Room. The Back to the Future escape room is on the first floor, whereas the Jurassic World escape room is just upstairs.

Prices can range anywhere from an average of $40 to $60 per person for a single escape room experience and Annual Passholders can get a discount when you purchase in person (at the time of writing this article). What was recommended as least expensive to us was the matinee which is any time before 6 PM on weekdays. Also, to note, if you are planning to attend both escape room experiences, they last about an hour each, so it is at your discretion if you want to do them back-to-back or spread it out. After you decide, each member of your party will be handed a ticket that details the experience and time on the back.

On the day of the experience, my family and I went to the check-in desk and they recommend you be there within 15 minutes of the escape room which would be safe to assume that it is to ensure they run on schedule. At check-in, we are guided to a space with TV monitors showing the safety video. After that is completed, we go upstairs to another attendant at the entrance of the Jurassic World Escape. They will scan your tickets and confirm your names on the reservation and let you know about standard safety and security measures as with many theme park attractions.

The Experience

The Escape Room experience involves a series of rooms with various puzzles themed to technical aspects you may find throughout the Jurassic World theme park. Some involve matching, sequencing, and using context clues from previous stages. You also get a score at the end of the escape based on four tiers where you can get a score of up to 20 as lead geneticist. Ultimately, the objects that are key to solving the puzzles are spaced out in the room well enough that you will need at least 3 people in your party to somewhat beat the clock (although if you have less than 6 people, there may be additional guests in your experience time).

The difficulty of each puzzle, in my opinion, gets progressively challenging not so much that they are hard to solve, but the context clues around the room can leave you scrambling for what seems like a good amount of time gone by. But often times, a lead geneticist from Dr. Wu's lab will give you some hints along the way. Also, not to worry, you will not be trapped on Isla Nublar. Because the rooms are timed, there will be a sort of override where the lead geneticist announces that you can essentially proceed to the next room.

Some additional highlights to this experience were that the attention to detail with the aesthetic of the Jurassic World film was top notch. It shows promise that if a full Jurassic World land were to ever be built, this is a step in the right direction, similar to the details in the VelociCoaster attraction in Universal's Islands of Adventure. Tying into the multi-sensory aspect, the sights, sounds, and even smells are authentic to what you would experience in each room, whether that be a lab or in the jungles of Isla Nublar.

Although there were some increasingly challenging puzzles towards the end, we made it out and survived off the island. After we left the experience, another attendant is present at the exit to tell us our score and we got a 15, which is pretty average and apparently, the highest any party has gotten is 18 out of 20!

The attendant also gets feedback because it's clear that this a brand new experience to Universal Orlando Resort and anybody who regularly receives surveys from them know that they are constantly working on ways to improve their experiences for guests. After that, the attendant offers to take a picture and the journey is over.

Overall, a must-do experience for Jurassic and Escape Room enthusiasts of all ages and it takes a team and effective communication to escape Jurassic World!

SPOILER Review

If you're still here, congrats on surviving the Non-Spoiler Review! In this portion, I break down each puzzle based on the story elements, so I will leave at least some surprises to be desired when you finish reading this.

NOW ON WITH THE TOUR!

Introductory Room:

After your party is checked in at the entrance of the Jurassic World Escape, you enter an enclosed corridor that smells very similar to a dinosaur paddock. Don't ask me how I know that, it just does.

Moving on, we are introduced to a geneticist, named Riley Matthews, and AIS, an Artificial Intelligence System (pronounced ACE) and we are recruited to the Hammond Creation Lab's Secret Offsite Research and Development Center. They will be our guide through the screens and overheard speakers throughout each room and will be reporting to Dr. Henry Wu about our progress.

Riley briefly mentions that many of the assets are reaching 100% genetic accuracy and that they are moving into genetically modified hybrids, which we know where that ends up. And so, we are directed to the first puzzle room, which is the genetics lab.

Puzzle 1 - Genetics Lab

This room tests your general biology skills as you match the sequences in the genetic code that make up the Indominus Rex, the new attraction to Jurassic World. Your team is guided to a workstation and will be using a group of sliders to reveal small sequences on two monitors. On one side it is the Indominus, the other is a species that makes up the hybrid.

What really stood out to me is that despite it being known for a while that Carnotaurus, Giganotosaurus, and Therizinosaurus were among the species that made up the Indominus, they were not in the 2015 film. So, Jurassic fans will be reassured that the experience acknowledges some aspects of Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022).

After matching a bunch of sequences, one of the members in your party will need to scan their hand on the touch pad leading to the next puzzle room, Nutrient Distribution.

Puzzle 2 - Nutrient Distribution

Moving into this next room, we are shown a small enclosure similar to what we have seen in Jurassic World and even the first Jurassic Park in the prologue sequence. In here, we are introduced to a Velociraptor from the IBRIS Project, named Bravo.

We are tasked to provide the necessary nutrient mixtures that will be key to keep Bravo satiated. When you look around the room, you will find canisters detailing how to make each mixture and that will be loaded into the panel facing Bravo. Once all mixtures are created there is an additional catch- you have to provide Bravo with the mixtures in the right order. And there are multiple levels of mixtures you will create as you race against the clock to satisfy this restless raptor.

What really adds to the tension of the puzzle is that you see the cage rattling and the roaring gets progressively louder as we scour around the room looking for each of these canisters. Once the room is completed, it seems like all has ended well. But then, the power starts fluctuating and then you hear a familiar ominous theme from Michael Giacchino's score. The Indominus Rex has escaped and Riley is informed by Dr. Wu that we need to go to the Cold Storage Area for our next puzzle.

Puzzle 3 - Cold Storage Area

This puzzle room is very similar to what we have seen in the Jurassic World film and what we've seen with Dennis Nedry's attempted hijinks in Jurassic Park.

We are presented with a frosted-over storage compartment of dinosaur and prehistoric reptilian embryos. However, the challenge is that we can't see them until we recharge all the canisters facing a panel with a keypad. To add to the stakes, the Indominus rex crashed into an essential power grid that threatens the viability of these embryos. Thus, Riley and Dr. Wu have assigned us to recharge all the canisters and enter the embryo code corresponding with the animals they wish to save for future sequencing.

The first one they ask for, which blew my mind is Quetzalcoatlus! This means, Henry Wu has been keeping some BIG secrets since before the events of the Isla Nublar Incident. Other animals we were assigned and also saw in the storage of embryo vials, included Dilophosaurus, Spinosaurus, Giganotosaurus, Dimetrodon, Suchomimus, Ankylosaurus, and basically every prehistoric creature we have ever seen in the films. If this doesn't scream, I want a prequel show/film with B.D. Wong, I don't know what else…

After completing this challenge, Riley and AIS let us know that the embryos have been saved. But, they warn us about more power failures, which gives Bravo, from the previous room, free rein to leave her enclosure.

That's when they speak too soon and the power temporarily goes out. You hear the snarling of a velociraptor from the Nutrient Distribution Room. Bravo's silhouette is shown at the door and she tries to open it, but is unsuccessful. Then, being the cunning velociraptor she is, Bravo escapes in the vents above us as we hear the sounds moving around and away…

AIS is still down, but Riley leads us into the power station that the Indominus bumped into.

Puzzle 4 - Power Station

This room has a bit of an outdoorsy atmosphere, with vibes similar to control rooms seen in Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom with Claire and Franklin. In this puzzle, Riley informs us that because the power is down, we will need to manually bring it back up.

This one requires all hands on deck, as one person needs to manually power the overhead lights or we are completely in the dark, another looking at the manual of where certain number switches are, and one more person changing the configuration of those switches based on a blueprint just above.

I thought this was a fun challenge as we each had to communicate with each other on following the blueprint in the time allotted. Once it was over, the power was restored just enough for us to escape into the Research and Development Lab's Control Room.

Puzzle 5 - Control Room

This is more of an abbreviated version of the control room we are familiar with in the 2015 film, but it contains all the key elements with multiple control panels for all users to manipulate as well as huge monitors on the walls showing various statistics around the island.

Essentially, AIS is rebooting and there are many areas of the park where the security systems are still offline. Our task is to use the control panels to find statistics to answer questions provided on these panels. This means that you will see multiple occurrences of a location that Riley wants you to solve.

This puzzle was a bit difficult because we could have benefited from additional members in our party and there are six consoles. So, this was one was definitely overridden for us. In terms of the story elements, the puzzle room ends with AIS booting back up and bringing the rest of the security systems online and Riley getting us ready to go to the Monorail Service Station.

But…

A security feed shows the Indominus has broken into the aviary and the pterosaurs have escaped. We hear screeches in the ceiling as the light bulbs break one by one until it seems they have flown away. Riley then lets us know the coast is clear and we are on our way to the Service Station.

Puzzle 6 - Monorail Service Station

I loved the atmosphere in this puzzle because the sights and smells made you feel you were on the ground in Isla Nublar and the Indominus is not far away. The foliage is rustling and you hear quite a bit of roaring and stomping.

Riley then informs you that the door to the monorail station was damaged and we need to follow the pipes to find the correct configurations of switches that will open the door. The stakes are continually added with the Indominus on the hunt, but this puzzle in my opinion is fun callback to Ellie Sattler following the pipes in Jurassic Park.

After opening the door, Riley tells us to proceed to the next puzzle in the Monorail Station Walkway.

Puzzle 7 - Monorail Station Walkway

This puzzle left us all confused, to be honest, because all the clues that Riley gave were to use the map of Isla Nublar on the Walkway wall to enter the numbers on a pin pad of the closest stations to us for the monorail to come get us. The Indominus also continued to get louder, which made it very clear of our impending doom.

Fortunately, AIS finally overrides the puzzle after we pass the time allotted and we are then directed to the loading platform, which looks like a maintenance shed.

Finale - Loading Platform/Monorail

AIS tells us to wait for the Service Monorail and the Indominus is still on our tails. The stomping becomes progressively louder and then the window in front of us blasts open to show the eye of the Indominus staring us down. Promptly after, the door to the monorail opens and we board for our journey off the island.

On the monorail, we see a monitor with Riley speaking to us from somewhere outdoors. She tells us that the authorities deem Jurassic World to be long gone, but thanks to us we saved a lot of people and research for Dr. Wu. She lets us know that he is building a team to continue his research, which implies his work in the future films.

Thus, the doors off the monorail open and we meet the attendant to debrief and take pics with the Indominus banner.

Concluding Thoughts

Overall, the Jurassic World Escape Room is a welcome addition to the Universal Orlando Resort and these adventures are really unique because they are story-driven as with many of the attractions in their theme parks. As a fan of the Jurassic Franchise, it was fun to be more involved in the high-stakes nature of the 2015 film. Many other experiences by Universal like the Jurassic World Exhibition and Jurassic World Live Tour give a nice stand-by experience, but this gave me and my family the closest experience to living the events of the movie.

Some areas that I think could be improved are relatively minor as I am sure Universal wants to cycle in other stories in the long run. For instance, I would like to have seen a brief video or audio of Dr. Wu as it has been known for Back to the Future that they had Christopher Lloyd return. I will not spoil that attraction, but the involvement could be done in the same way for BD Wong. Additionally, I thought some areas could use small animatronics such as the pterosaurs in the ceiling or even see the claws of the Indominus at the Service Station.

In terms of the larger Jurassic lore at hand, I thought this experience paid homage to the future and the history of the franchise in showing that embryos for animals we see in Fallen Kingdom and Dominion are saved. This also means that Dr. Wu has a deeper story to tell and makes me wish that Universal explores the prequel route even if it is on streaming services.

For value, I do recommend the weekdays due to the price ranges fluctuating. It is also best to note that those change based on peak days at the resort. But, I believe the attention to detail is on par with the latest attractions they have in the theme parks. The repeatability is also strong for those who want to acquire a top score of 20 as lead geneticist.

Finally, the Jurassic World Escape Room Experience, in my opinion, is a strong entry in the supplementary material to the franchise that is fun for the whole family and friends.

Fishy's top movies watched in 2023

It’s that time of year again. Time for my movies roundup for the year.

This post includes movies that I watched in 2023, not movies that were released in 2023. I will rank movies based on my personal impression, so this is not an objective post. As well, I sort the movies in tiers as opposed to individual rankings.

My Favourite Movies of the Year

These were the movies that had the biggest impact on me. I think of them often.

The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019)

This movie was about a man and his attachment to his childhood house. It was based on the experiences of one of the writers, who also played a fictionalized version of himself in the movie as one of the main characters. I thought the movie was thoughtful in its themes, about gentrification, and people's attachments to places.

Another reason why I liked this movie was because it was very beautiful. I was so in awe of some of the shots and aesthetic choices that the director had made. San Francisco is such a visually distinct city and the director definitely took advantage of that. As well, the colour palettes in this movie were so pretty. I had fun choosing a gif for this movie in my post because there were so many beautiful shots. Definitely check out this show if you want a visual feast and a meaningful story.

Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms (封神第一部: 朝歌風雲) (2023)

I know this is more of a fun action flick but it really did move me. This movie is the first in a trilogy covering the Investiture of the Gods, a famous Chinese historical fantasy and mythology novel. The novel is a retelling of the fall of the Shang Dynasty and the rise of the Zhou Dynasty, with mythology weaved in.

This movie specifically followed the journey of Ji Fa, who would be the future King of the Zhou Dynasty (sort of a spoiler though most Chinese audiences will already know who he is). Ji Fa was a hostage son who glorified his captor, Yin Shou, the last King of the Shang Dynasty. Over the course of the movie, Yin Shou’s tyranny was revealed, and by the end of the movie, Ji Fa understood his values and decided he had a responsibility to take down the tyrant. The mythological story line had to do with the immortals seeing that Yin Shou’s rule would be bad for the common folk, and wanting to stop that from happening. It was an exciting movie about war and politics, but it was also a touching story about fathers and sons. I kept rewatching scenes between fathers and sons and brothers and feeling those moments of love for one another.

There have been comparisons between this movie and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and for good reason. The director, Wuershan, took much inspiration from the Lord of the Rings and consulted and hired people who had worked on the Lord of the Rings. Many behind the scenes videos outlined the extensive design process in creating the world that this story was set in. There was also a separate variety show that covered the 8-9 month training camp that all of the young actors attended to hone acting and physical ability. It’s clear that a lot of love went into this movie, and it showed in how rich the movie felt to me.

For some reason, I couldn't find any Creation of the Gods gifs using the Tumblr in-post gif finder. So instead, I looked up specific characters and found a gif from one of the most hype scenes in the movie >3

Honourable Mentions

These were also movies that I enjoyed and they made me think. They just weren’t at the top of my list.

The King of Comedy (1982)

The King of Comedy was about a man who was desperate to find fame through any means possible. There were characters in the movie who were fascinated with fame and celebrities in different ways. What was chilling was that some of these characteristics were familiar to us and I was sympathetic to them to varying degrees. I thought the different interpretations of obsession with celebrity were interesting, and relevant even to celebrity culture now.

An Elephant Sitting Still (大象席地而坐) (2018)

This was a drama film focusing on a few main characters living in a town, each with their own battles. One of the characteristics of this movie was its length, nearly 4 hours long, and yet this movie did not feel as long as other long movies I watched. The director Hu Bo naturally had a slow style but it didn’t feel slow. Rather, he captured some of the mundanity of life so instead of feeling bored, I felt that I was accompanying these characters in real time as they went about their day. As mentioned, this was a story about characters and their battles, and I did feel some parts of this story to be somewhat hard to watch. Not literally, but in the sense that I felt bad and I knew I couldn’t do anything for the characters. I know this movie definitely isn’t for everyone given its length and style, but I felt that I could get a sense of what the director was trying to express, about trying to break free of one’s chains.

Movies that were still good

I thought these movies were good and they had messages that would speak to other people.

From Up on Poppy Hill (コクリコ坂から) (2011)

This was a movie about young people, young romance, and coming of age. Our main characters were high school students. Through the course of the movie, they learned about themselves, each other, and they learned to fight for causes they believed in. As a story, it was fun. It was cute, but our characters did encounter troubles which I appreciated.

While this movie was animated by Studio Ghibli, it was directed by Miyazaki Goro, the son of Miyazaki Hayao, and there were notable differences in style. I felt that From Up on Poppy Hill was a bit faster paced, but still showed off much of the Studio Ghibli style that we appreciate, in high quality animation and pacing.

Apocalypse Now (1979)

I’m not normally drawn to war films, but I felt that the story line of this movie offered something a bit different. This movie was about a military captain who was assigned to assassinate a defector during the Vietnam War. I think this movie appealed to me because the plot was more of a personal journey of the captain as he tried to understand why the defector had decided to take the path that he did. It offered a different perspective on the horrors of war that I commonly see. I think this is one of those movies that I’ll have to re-watch several times because it was packed with interesting dialogue.

Bullhead (Rundskop) (2011)

This was a solemn drama/crime film, surrounding an illegal market where livestock were injected with hormones. From beginning to end I felt a serious sense of gravity over the main character as he went about his life, and as we discovered his past. I think the appeal of this movie was the style and the character, as opposed to the story. Not that the story was bad, but rather, I think the story was more of a vehicle to show us what life was like for the people in this movie, specifically our main character.

I Am Mother (2019)

I do love a science fiction story that asks questions and makes me think. I Am Mother was about a child who was raised by a robot. Initially, we were only privy to the nurturing of this child. As she grew older, we were shown more about the truth of the world. I liked this movie because it was simple from a story standpoint, but it did raise a lot of hypothetical questions, which is what I love about science fiction stories.

Quest for Fire (1981)

I included this movie on my list because it certainly left an impression on me. To sum up my feelings on it, I appreciated the commitment to the concept. This movie was about a group of cavemen in prehistoric times. They had had a fire, but it was put out, and so the group sent a few members to find fire again. The reason this movie left an impression was because it was very raw. This was a prehistoric time, a time before many of the social norms we were familiar with would have been common among people. Some of it was gruesome, such as violence or just eating habits that were hard to watch, but I appreciated that the movie retained this cohesive style to immerse us in the time period. I’m pretty sure this movie was not historically accurate (for reasons that I won't say because of spoilers) but I think it delivered the story it set out to deliver.

The Heroic Trio (東方三俠) (1993)

If I was 13 years old I probably would have made this movie my entire personality. This was an action-adventure movie starring three icons of Hong Kong and Chinese entertainment (Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui, and Maggie Cheung). It was a story about solving crime mixed in with a little bit of the supernatural. It had a surprising amount of backstory, particularly relating to two members of the trio. And of course I loved seeing the women fight in cool action scenes.

Closing Remarks

I’m a little surprised myself that there were some critically acclaimed movies that didn’t make this list. This didn’t bother me in previous years but it did bother me this year. I went into some movies expecting to love them because they were what I would consider my type of movie. Perhaps it was because my expectations were too high, that the parts I didn’t like seemed to stick out more to me. I did do some thinking as to why I didn’t like those movies and I think I still stand by those opinions.

D-Tier Poptropica Islands (Nostalgia Ranking)

I have to make the same disclaimer as before- this ranking is based purely on nostalgia- no critical thinking involved! I have reserved the D tier for islands that I remember actively disliking, though not hating as much as the F tier islands.

Skullduggery Island

Skullduggery is at the top of the D tier for me, and once again it is less due to the island itself and more my inability to beat it as a child. I ragequit this one multiple times and eventually just followed a walkthrough that literally said exactly where to sail and what to trade to beat the island. The only reason this was not F-tier was that I genuinely loved the pirate aesthetic, so I spent a lot of time just sailing around, not too worried about the main quest (which is probably another reason it took me so long to beat it). I remember there being a trading system that I did not understand at all when I first played this game, so I hope that the replay will be a lot more fun for me and I have high hopes that Skullduggery can really climb the tier list after my replay.

Vampire’s Curse Island

Vampire's Curse is in D because the only thing I remember about this island is that the first time I played it, I got to one of the final scenes- the one where you use the potion to heal the vampire- and it just didn’t work. I had to replay the entire island and when I finally reached that last scene it happened again. The third time was the charm and I was able to beat the island but let me just say that 10-year-old me had never experienced such frustration in my life, and I genuinely cannot remember anything about this island other than that final scene which is scarred into my mind. It’s not in F tier because I do remember that I thought the castle was super cool and while I was frustrated at the glitches, I still liked watching other people play walkthroughs of the island.

How Vampire's Curse had me feeling after 3 hours and 2 restarts:

Arabian Nights Island

I’m noticing a theme here-- if I remember correctly, this island also has some sort of trading (or was it crafting?) system. Not much to say as I really do not remember much from this one except that it was another island that required much much more walkthrough assistance than the others. Also, I could have sworn this was an episodic release like Survival and Mission Atlantis but I stand corrected by Poptropica Wiki.

Poptropolis Games Island

This is another island that I hated because I was so bad at it. In Jake Miller’s Youtube video that inspired my tier list, he mentioned that the controls were pretty bad, so maybe there’s a chance that my hating this island was less the fault of my tiny child hands and poor coordination and more due to poor game design. Only my attempt to replay it will tell!

Mission Atlantis Island

Mission Atlantis is the last island in D tier- though to be clear I only ever played the first episode. I can’t really remember much except that I felt like it wasn’t very fun and I was disappointed when I finished the island and had not encountered any merpeople.

After finishing this D tier, I am most excited to revisit Skullduggery, since I feel like I would have loved it if I understood it at all. Once again, this is all based on nostalgia and this tier is pretty evident that I mainly hated the islands I was too stupid to figure out. Hopefully, 10 years later, I'm at least a little bit more intelligent (though it's doubtful). Omg Wings is one of my most favorite album (still undecided which is #1 to me ofc) and I wasn't even ARMY at that time. I became army in Feb 13, 2017 (specific I know but because I just went straight to it without any reservations like yeah idk all of them, I didn't care if people will call me as someone just joining the bandwagon, I just loved Spring Day so much I decided I was ARMY right that very moment lol) anyways, I have all 4 versions of Wings, took me a while to buy them but I'm so so happy!

It was definitely odd when they like REALLY blew up in popularity. It was kind of bittersweet - like I was sad I could only have them to myself (not really because so many people still loved them at the time lmao) for such a short time and then have to share them but I was also insanely happy and proud. Like the way it became so much easier to find other army irl was amazing and I'm still so happy when I get to meet more army. And of course, them finding so much success was just amazing.

But yeah, Wings is just top tier and the aesthetic of that album and the blood sweat and tears music video really inspired my writing. One day I will buy at least one version, I am so happy that you were able to get all four!

Oh and Spring Day, that really solidified me as an army 😂 I FEEL YOU.

i binged sk8 the infinity at the weekend and i enjoyed it a lot. for a show with an ai robot skateboard and tricks that would be 100% deadly irl it’s a surprisingly grounded show.

like yes, the costumes and personas of the background characters are over the top, the villain is extra as hell and creepy af in a truly anime fashion. the skateboarding power moves are there to emphasize that this is a sports anime true to its genre. it’s all super entertaining in this classical sports anime way with really stunning animation moments. and yes, one of the protags is super gifted and becomes a top tier skater in ridiculous time.

but the skating actually feels grounded despite that. the non power move things they do are real things skateboarders do. their boards have these visual styles that feel right, there’s this street aesthetic to everything, including street art stickers. and it’s all filmed like a rl skateboarding video, like the creators watched a shit ton of those and really understood the visual language of that. (yes, i do love to the street art aesthetic in all its forms)

the other thing that feels grounded are the characters. the background ones are more comic relief and they also have these personas when they skate - i have no clue if rl skateboarders do that actually or was this done due to the anime conventions and for entertainment value - so they are extra at times and don’t get that much development but they are also endearing. the two that feel more grounded are the honorary straight, shadow, he’s such a fun character, and the brat miya, he’s got such perfect middleschooler energy.

the grounding kind of falls flat for me with the villain, my attitude to him very much mimics langa’s attitude. the dude is a great skater but he’s also weird and cringe so he’s not really interesting. i loved how langa was all the time: i really don’t give an f about your creepy personal issues, i’m not going to react to that, i just find you upsetting because you hurt my friends and also an interesting skating challenge. when they rolled out the villains back story my thoughts were: i know that’s meant to be sad and it kinda is but i also don’t care about you, now go to jail. no the subtext kink dynamic with the other guy you have going isn’t really doing it for me either, go to jail.

where the character writing shines is with the main two. they don’t have personas, they are just themselves in their daily life and during the underground skateboarding events.

reki is enthusiastic and passionate but also vulnerable in a way that’s relatable. his crisis feels very real in a teenage depression kind of way, or even an adhd rejection kind of way - though i’m not saying i think he has adhd in canon, i try not to diagnose characters, it just felt very relatable to me, a person with adhd, in how it all played out. and how the crisis is in reki’s mind very much about langa but the little detail of how it affects others was just so good. like how depression is so self-absorbing.

langa is quiet and not great in social situations but he’s very much present. he’s not standoffish and above it all, he’s really there taking everything in even if he’s sometimes slow to react to social situations. but he’s really focused on reki and attached to him and it’s just such a strong relationship. and it’s really cool how langa asks for advice and talks when the situation demands it.

because omg they talk it out like people, and that’s just rare in media period, not just manga/anime which can be extremely emotionally constipated due to its cultural background - i don’t mean that all japanese people never talk openly about their emotions or that they never had until recently or whatever but there is a certain culture of understatements in japanese language and it influences such things as pop culture cliches which deal in exaggeration and super exposing of cultural ideals. tangent aside the conversation was super real, awkward and it hit just right.

this is much longer that i planned. so just honorable mentions.

the anime really is there to cater to the shipping crowd. the two mains are very much implied to be a thing by the text of the show, and i think some creators also implied that though i’m not 100% on that. but i don’t think the show’s going to say it in open text in the following season(s) because it’s still a shonen anime. it can go fanservice all it wants but an openly queer protag in shonen is imho decades away. the rest of the cast is eyecandy very much made to cater to the female/queer gaze. while the og japanese version is subtext, though very loud subtext at times, about it, the dub apparently took it and ran with it and made it very queer.

it’s set in okinawa and that means the world to me. and it also gives a certain unique aesthetic to the show.

The ROG Phone 8 Shows that ASUS Still Knows its Stuff

ASUS unveiled a ton of new and impressive tech just this month, and its ROG-series products were undoubtedly one of the main highlights of its hardware reveals. As such, the latest iteration of its smartphone line - the ROG Phone 8 series - is evidence that the Taiwanese manufacturer continues to have faith in its Android-powered hardware offerings. With that in mind, the ROG Phone 8 series builds on features that were introduced by its predecessors, while adding some new elements to the mix - let's take a look! Design and Display Perhaps the biggest change one would notice with the ROG Phone 8 is the approach to design. While the phones still retain a look and feel inspired by ASUS' other ROG offerings, they have a more minimalist look, at least when compared to models like the ROG Phone 6 and 7. Gone are the overly angular lines and seams on the rear panel, which have now been replaced by a more modest design. Some might even describe it as a refinement, especially given how "loud" earlier ROG Phones looked. With that being said, ASUS hasn't completely abandoned the gamer aesthetic - there's a glowing ROG logo on the back of the base model, while the Pro and Pro Editions feature what ASUS calls the "AniMe" display, a customizable mini-LED display on the bottom half of the rear. Internal Specs and Software Of course, aside from their appearance, the ROG Phones are most notable for their performance, with ASUS always incorporating whichever high-end components are available at the time. Cameras, Pricing and Availability ROG Phones aren't exactly known for top-tier camera performance, but that doesn't mean that ASUS has cheaped out on the imaging hardware. I never watched animes 🫣 I think I would like it, but I never know how or where to start mdhsmdh if you have a any tips/recs I’m all ears haha Also another big Disney fan spotted haha me and my sister used to watch Disney movies every night when we were little and we know all their songs! I also grew to become a big Disney Channel fan and HSM is definitely my comfort franchise haha!

I don’t have much patience to watch stuff either but I’m still more of a series person than a movie person haha a few years back I would binge watch k-dramas (16/20 episodes, +1 hour each) but now days I can’t see myself doing that anymore kdhsjdh I recently binge watched Wednesday tho and it was really good! I really recommend! Ooo I've been meaning to watch Wednesday, I love the Addams family movies and I wanna see what's up with this series. My dad already watched it all and he said it was good so Its been in my top list since then! A friend recommended me to watch the "Dark" series so I also have that, hopefully my brain can get around to do it 😂

My fav MV is Scars! Even with the very little lino moments I think it's still one of my most favorite skz mvs, the aesthetic is really cool I really loved the 'its the end of the world' concept they had in there, and the dancing!!!!! Glitter on the Floor | Phinnip

The show had been a total success, and while Phineas was bummed it was over, he was coping in the same tradition as generations of theatre kids before him: absolutely hamming it up at the cast party.

The great thing about Moulin Rouge, in particular, was that the show was practically about partying. Well, it was also about truth beauty freedom love or whatever, and, like, turn-of-the-century Paris, but the soundtrack was full of bangers and the aesthetic was top tier. And so that was how Phineas ended up standing on a chair in someone’s off-campus apartment, belting the lyrics to Sweet Lady Marmalade into an empty beer bottle microphone.

“Yoooo, it’s the duke!” Phineas interrupted himself and jumped off the chair, stumbling a little when he miscalculated the distance to the floor. “Everybody watch out, it’s time for his solo!” He shoved the bottle “microphone” at Pip.

Lavender Haze | Phinnip (10 Years Later)

Monday, November 21 — Back to the Future Thread: Write either a flashback or a flashforward thread with another mun! (This could be an existing connection or a connection that could possibly happen 10 years in the future! Should be 10+/- years in the past/future.)

This time last year, Phineas had thought he was on top of the world. He was wrong. This was on top of the world.

His brother was getting married!

And yeah, maybe Phineas and Mim hadn’t always gotten along, but over the years, they had found a rhythm to things. At this point, Mim felt as much a part of the family as anyone else, and honestly, it had kind of already felt like she and Ferb were married. But the time came when they decided they wanted to make it official (and honestly, Phineas just wanted an excuse to throw a big party).

And yeah, it was a pretty big day for the podcast, too— they had just reached 100k subs— but Phineas wasn’t thinking about that right now. He posted the “thanks for the support” video he and Pip had filmed the other night and then turned off his phone, ready to attend to his best man duties.

Now, though, there was a lull between the end of the ceremony and the cocktail hour/reception/general revelry, so Phineas made the mistake of turning on his phone. It was blowing up with comments, so many that Phineas didn’t even bother to read them.

And then Pip came bounding around the corner, looking frantic. Like he always did.

“Hey hey hey,” Phineas said, grinning. Somehow, a year after they had first kissed, seeing Pip still made Phineas’s heart flutter a little bit. Especially in that suit— one thing about Pip was that he really knew how to wear a suit. “I know I shouldn’t be checking my phone, but our post is going crazy. People love it.”

best albums and female artists that shaped gen z

Albums are a topic that has become a very controversial, since this can reveal people's music taste, bad or not. Albums, on the literal, are just collection and compilation of songs sold for the people to listen. But albums are also a form of art, they are a part of a story, whether for the artist, for the composer, or for the writer. Some people have their favorite albums that they cannot live without.

Norman Fucking Rockwell!, and Lana Del Rey Arguably the best album of the 21st century, this album has been the best of them all. The first line of the first song of the album, the title track, "Goddamn, man child, You f*** me so good that I almost said, "I love you"", has sent her fans to heavens. The song talks about how she loves a man even though his imperfections are showing. Perhaps the most popular song on the album, "Doin' Time", is a cover of Sublime's original. The song has garnered more than 300 million streams on Spotify alone. Whilst the best song on the albums, as per fans would say, is the fan-favorite, "Happiness is a butterfly". The most iconic line, "If he's a serial killer, then what's the worst that can happen to a girl who's already hurt, I'm already hurt", has sent fans to their sad girl mode. The main producers of this album are Jack Antonoff, who also produced some of the best albums of this century, such as Lorde's Solar Power, Taylor Swift's evermore, and many more. Del Rey's fandom has been always been known for jokingly treating Lana Del Rey a God. Some of her fans was found praising her as if she was a God. Also, her fandom have been trending last year in the video-sharing app TikTok, for creating the Lana Del Rey cult, which influences people by spamming comment sections with comments such as, "⚠️✝️LANA DEL REY IS COMING✝️⚠️SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM BEFORE ITS TOO LATE✝️⚠️LANA LOVES YOU ALL.". Lana Del Rey has always been known for her ever-changing reinvention of her aesthetics in music. Her albums have different euphoria and feel onto it. For example, her second album Ultraviolence, features darkness and melancholia. Then her album Lust of Life, which is a complete opposite of the previous album. Now features sublimity and simplicity. Her lyrics are also top-tier and monumental. She has always been a subject in comparing her work into Shakespeare's, which proved her mastery in poetry. Her best songs are as follows: West Coast Radio Salvatore Cherry The greatest Chemtrails over the Country Club Arcadia

Even an abrupt entrance to the realm of indie and folk genre, Swift has always been a superstar. Her reinvention did not made her lose fans but instead, she gained a ton. folklore has debuted on Spotify in its first day garnering a total of 80.6 million streams. The first song on her album, "the 1", has shocked many of Swifties since most of her songs starts with Pop. The line "but we were something don't you think so?", pertains into grieving a little bit, but moving forward and moving on. Perhaps the highlight of the album is the three songs, cardigan, august, and betty which symbolizes the love triangle in the album named Betty, Augustine, and James. Cardigan was the point of view of Betty, the original and righteous woman, worthy for the love of James. The line "and when I felt like I was an old cardigan, under someone's bed, you put me on and said I was your favorite", in this sense, The old cardigan was her, pertaining to the old love she had, the old relationship. Betty felt like James was cheating on her, using her like she was nothing. The song august is the point of view of Augustine, the other woman. The line "to live for the hope of it all, cancel plans just in case you'd call, and say meet me behind the mall", refers to the false hope and false trust of Augustine for James, the dedication of her for their secret love. The last line has a double meaning, it is meet me behind them all. The last song is betty, which is James's point of view in the relationship. The line "in the garden would you trust me, if I told you it was just a summer thing?" is the contrary on august "so much for summer love", meaning James didn't give an importance to Augustine. There are other songs in the album which has a message on people's mental health. Songs such as mirrorball, and this is me trying, has made fans cry. Swift's evolution in music is very rare, which led her into being a pop phenomena. Her country roots have led her into transitioning in pop, to folk, which has a distinct characteristics, very different from each other. Her different issues and feuds that almost plotted her downfall, but instead, she is one of the prominent artist in terms of longevity. One characteristic of her music is its relatability to its listeners, her target audience can be teens who had experienced their first heartbreak, which can be found in her album Fearless, or that depressing and heart-wrenching heartbreak, which can be found in her album Red, and finally finding the one, which can be found in her album Lover. There is no definite audience in listening Swift's discography. Her best songs are as follows: Cornelia Street Come Back...Be Here illicit affairs right where you left me

Melodrama, and Lorde "I'm 19 and I'm on fire" When it comes to music for young adults and people who are suffering in existential crisis, then this album is for you. If music is art, then Melodrama is a painting. It is a completed canvas with its bombarding colors and hues resonating sadness, but also happiness. Feelings that we experience when we are in confusion in the grand scheme of life. This album has the highest critic score by a female artists with a whopping ninety-one percent. The first song on the album "Green Light" has the elements of anger with the fast paced beats of the song, and showed in the lyrics of the first verse, "she thinks you love the beach, you're such a damn liar". The song tells about moving on, but looking at the lens of resentment and anger. Perhaps the best song on the album is "Supercut", which means reminiscing and getting back to the films of the relationship, then getting back to the reality. The song are for people who has not moved on in the relationship, contrary to the first song Green Light. The line "all the moments I play in the dark, wild and fluorescent come home to my heart" pertaining to a flashback of her past love, the love that she can't come back to. The last song of the album is "Perfect Places". The phrase perfect places means even in the darkest moment of our lives, where we had lost the compass and the steering wheel of our lives, remember that this is just a period of time and someday, we will find a life that is very happy, free from all the problems. Lorde is one of the artists who was popular in her debut era. I’ve seen this done before but here are my modern!rdr2 social media headcanons for the Van der Linde gang.

some of these are LONG and then some are shorter. doesn’t mean I love any of them any less however. I just did my best with all of them.

Dutch

frequently uses Facebook and has dozens of friends he doesn’t even know. like if he gets a friend request he’ll accept it. John tells him he might as well just make his page public and Arthur pleads with him to make a facebook PAGE so that his random friends will stop liking posts that Arthur tags Dutch in.

Dutch has no idea how to make a facebook page.

he also has a Twitter and a massive following at that. He’s VERIFIED.

all of his twitter posts are vague though

are they a joke? are they political? is it what he’s eating for lunch that day? literally no one knows.

Hosea

also has facebook but doesn’t use it because why does he need to look at pictures of events he was at. he only uses it to see things he didn’t partake in

also has snapchat but just to keep up with the kids

an avid reddit user. if he’s got problems he’ll go to reddit. claims reddit saved his life. everyone’s tired of the story so they stopped asking.

also uses snapchat more than he should and the only social platform he has more than 100 followers on.

same as arthur and has both facebook and instagram and posts the same on both except his are pleasing to look at.

they’re unintentionally aesthetic

he uses a psd on all his pictures and won’t share what it is

has monthly life updates that start with some inspirational or deep quote and then text that pushes the instagram word limit

also has a deviantart , has shared psds there before , constantly tries to convince Arthur to get it.

the definition of a facebook mom. 80% of her facebook posts are about Jack or parenting.

Instagram is similar but also different, she’s actually a relatively successful influencer with over 1,000 followers.

all of her friends and family (who have instagram) follow her

has snapchat solely for the cute bitmojis and to send John adorable snaps of Jack playing with all the fun filters.

she also won’t take a selfie unless it’s with snapchat because she no longer trusts her own camera.

also uses pinterest and has a collaborative board with all the ladies.

but in general, on her own, she has too many boards. she uses pinterest for EVERYTHING

bold of you to assume she uses social media.

she does just not a whole lot.

checks it once in the morning and once at night.

except pinterest because how dare Abigail get her into it. but even pinterest she only uses in downtime.

has facebook and instagram but there’s maybe only five posts.

if anything she’ll post on her story

will only snap Abigail and Arthur otherwise she doesn’t use snapchat

all of the social apps are mostly offloaded on her phone anyways

if she needs to know anything she just checks the group text which she has on do not disturb because they text way too much.

she’s verified on instagram

it’s also the only social platform she’ll use, which frustrates Dutch because he wants to be friends with her on facebook

but she’s happy with just instagram

she keeps it simple

and the main theme to her posts are fun outfits in her ever expanding closet

the other posts are usually of plants that she’s managed to grow. she’s not the best at being a plant mom but she’s still a good one to the ones she’s managed to keep alive.

the only thing she contributes to the pinterest board are her own pictures of her plants which are overly aesthetic.

Karen

started out with a normal instagram account then made a spam account which she ended up using way more often.

all of her posts are extremely chaotic

and usually reposts from her snapchat

has a reddit just to troll John

reposted his cringy youtube videos to reddit and got hundreds of upvotes

if you wanna see the most raw and chaotic videos of Arthur and John then she’s the one to follow.

Zodiac Challenge

Welcome to the Sims 4 Zodiac Challenge!

This idea came to me in a dream after a month of um-ing and ah-ing over whether or not I should start my very own Sims inspired Youtube Channel.

This is also inspired by the Not So Berry Challenge over on my queen, lilsimsie’s page, since I recently started playing that myself and found myself engaging with aspects of the game I never used to before.

SO, the Zodiac challenge... It’s a legacy challenge inspired by Zodiac traits*, aspirations and careers with a little extra spice to keep the story moving along.

*Please keep in mind that this is not a direct reflection of Zodiac traits, but merely an inspired challenge based on some common information surrounding each sign and a need to make a workable legacy challenge. I love all you little start signs out there equally and I believe we all have some positive influences on society as a whole.

Okay, okay, cut to the chase already. Here are the rules of the challenge:

No excessive money cheats (freerealestate is acceptable, as well as moderate transfer of household fees when a sim moves out)

You have full control over CAS for your sims/partners/children, however traits are to remain according to challenge

The color attached to each generation/sign needs to be visible on all sim outfits as well as in household, but you can decide to what degree

You can create looks inspired by the signs, but again, you can decide to what degree

Make it your own! Where a generation requires pack-specific traits, aspirations, careers etc which you do not own, please substitute and come up with your own unique spin on it!
