So i finished the liveship traders a few hours ago and i have Thoughts and Feelings.

-im so????? emotional?????? i feel wrung out. i was so invested in the lives of these characters and the speed with which i read the books combined with how emotionally weighty some of the content of the books has left me feeling so many emotions and i cant name half of them.

-i didnt expect to enjoy this series as much as i did. i practically flew through the last book (read it all in roughly 2 days) and i think thats the fastest ive ever read a book that length.

-Althea Vestrit my darling, my baby, my honeybunch, my sugarplum. How i adore you.

-She went through so much :( And despite it all she kept that daring spirit.

-actually i think all my favourite things about althea are the thing that keffria hates about her lmao

-kennit. fucking kennit. i was actually kind of attached to that bastard right up until you-know-what happened. yes i know he was manipulative but at that his motives were still kinda understandable and even forgivable given the trauma and whatnot. he was actually doing some good with destroying the slavers and freeing the tattooed (even though his real intentions were selfish). But what he did to althea was fucking disgusting and honestly i think he deserved a worse ending than the one he got.

-like seriously. you had a perfectly good sympathetic villian. whyd you have to go and make him irredeemable.

-wintrow and paragon not caring that kennit is a literal rapist is actually so realistic bc men fr be defending their rapist friends like that irl too.

-on the subject of villains, kyle haven got off too easy as well because this whole thing is his fault if you ask me. wintrow, althea, ronica, and keffria should have all gotten the chance to beat the shit out of him.

-at first i thought etta was wayyy too clingy and weird but she grew on me (thanks to her expanding her world past kennit's existence). i actually really hope to see her in the rest of the books, and i really wanna see how shes adapted to being queen.

-i love the vestrit women and how they were written. aside from my boundless love for althea, i have mad respect for ronica and i enjoyed seeing malta's character development. at first i thought keffria was too much of a prim and proper tradwife but when shit hit the fan and she had to stand up and be strong even she became tolerable.

- i went from wanting to throttle malta to her becoming my little princess. i just wish she didnt have to go through so much shit to become better :( she was too young to act the way she did before but she was also too young to go through the things she did when she got lost in the rain wilds

-malta should have gotten the opportunity to slap cosgo silly at least once

-im so conflicted by reyn and malta's relationship bc on one hand they are SO cute together but on the other hand im not really feeling that age gap :/ the story would have lost absolutely nothing by making reyn closer to her age.

-MISS AMBER❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

-i know who she really is and im just so interested to find out whats going on there cause why the masquerade??? theres a whole other layer added to it when i think about all the talk about the Fool's gender in the farseer trilogy

-amber is so different from the fool that it took me way longer than it should have to realize that they were the same person. At one point i suspected she was his sister LMAOOO. but sometimes she'd say something or do something and i couldnt help but feel so happy in my heart bc thats my fool!!!!! <3

-FITZ IS HER TRUE LOVE 😭😭😭😭 SCREAMING AND CRYING

-paragon asking her to give him a face she could love and she just. without hesitation. gives him fitz's. down to the damn earring. down to the broken freaking nose. help.

-i love her relationship with paragon 🥺

-grag>>>>>>>brashen. i liked brash as a character and id most definitely let him hit but theres something about tenira that just #DoesIt for me. hope althea's happy though

Story: 4 out of 5 Smut: 5 out of 5

I.. am not sure how I feel about this book lol.

I’m all for a “why choose” romance, but I think I may have met my limit with this one. Four on one is fine, but seven on one? It left me re-reading scenes to make sure I knew where everyone was.

As for the story, I liked it. I think I could have even loved it, but all the smut scenes kind of took away from everything. Which is something I never thought I’d say.

I loved that these “sinners” got a second chance to become judges over their race, but the big showdown seemed… anticlimactic. I felt like the drama could have had more oomph if the smut scenes had been less frequent.

But all in all, the book kept me rather entertained and I will definitely read the next standalone in this series.

Now here are my rambling thoughts..

* Wait a minute, she’s only 16?! Please let there be a time jump in the next chapter.

* Oh yay. Time jump! Eighteen is still young tho 😬 Another time jump, please 🙏🏻

* Ouch. Fate chose the King as her mate and he rejected the bond. What a dick.

* Oohhh. Girl villain. Let’s go!

* She let them kill her 🥺 She shocked them all by meeting her death willingly. Oh my god. That was so sad.

* “You, Althea, were always destined to be the death of others and be one in the dark protecting innocents.”

* She’s back, baby. Fuck yeah!

* I knew this was going to be “Why Choose”, but goddamn… how many is she going to have?

* Seven kings. Seven kings who all wanna feed, feed from, and fuck the only queen 😂

* Oh my god. I love them all already 🥰

* Reve and Althea making Conall cum in his pants 😂 They’re gonna be the death of everyone.

* Queen of Monsters; Queen of Nightmares. I love it.

* She took on a God’s powers. Holy shit.

* Damn. She really took control of Nathair’s body and made him stroke himself. Girl is not playing around 😂

* Wait… there are 7 kings. She’s supposed to claim the nightmares and has claimed one (Nathair), and now she says only 5 to go? That’s 6 she’ll claim then. Is one only going to be platonic?

* Oh. My heart hurts for Azul. I hope Althea keeps her promise.

* I knew Reve was going to be fun 😏

Azalin Reviews: Darklord Althea

Darklord: Althea Domain: Demise Domain Formation: 686 BC Power Level: 💀💀⚫⚫⚫ (2/5 Skulls) Sources: Domains of Dread (2e), Monstrous Compendium I and II (2e)

Within the island chain known as The Finger in the Domain of Lamorida is a small island called Demise that houses a mysterious Darklord who’s history has been obscured by time and most likely the diligent work of our ever present tormentors. This Domain is ruled by the Darklord Althea.

From the sea, Demise appears as a large cone of dark basalt rock sticking out of the ocean with desolate shores. Those brave enough to climb the cone discover the island is a large crater that contains a vast tropical jungle at its center. From this, one could gather that Althea’s homeworld was associated with volcanic activity or, at the very least, far warmer than the arctic climate of Lamordia.

At the very heart of the jungle is a structure made entirely of white stone with a single arched entrance – a portal of a sort with runes engraved all around it. None in the lands of Mists have been able to decipher its meaning and I theorize that is a harsh reminder of Althea’s homeland. Within this structure is a vast labyrinth made of stone and illusions, the combination making it nearly impossible for one to navigate. It is within this maze that Althea is trapped.

No one, not even I, have discovered Althea’s history before she was dragged into the Mists. Her crimes must have been great to not only be imprisoned on an island but also within a labyrinth on that island. What can be determined about Althea is that she is a Medusa. If you’re not familiar with their kind, Medusa are beautiful women with snake scales upon their body and hair made of living snakes. Althea’s isolation has driven her into despair and desperation. She longs for companionship, but her gaze turns most that look upon her into stone.

Althea’s gaze is quite deadly and she can even extend it into the astral and ethereal planes, but if she is ever to view her own image, she too would be turned to stone. Given that their own reflection is a medusa’s greatest weakness, a vampire medusa would be quite formidable. Perhaps I should conduct some experimentation into the matter…

Althea’s snakes spit venom and she herself is skilled with both bow and sword and though she loathes the maze she is trapped within, it is the perfect lair for one of her kind. Each bend of the maze, she could hide behind, ready to paralyze any that look upon her.

I find it difficult to fully rate a Darklord who’s history has been so thoroughly obfuscated by the Mists. Without her illusion-filled maze, she would be rather easy to defeat. And given that she is just as fooled by the illusions as any would-be hero, I find her Darklord status a bit lacking. I will grant her two skulls, one for her mysterious past and one for her snakes.

Song Review: Grateful Dead - “Althea” (Live, May 27, 1989)

Call it Workmanslike Dead.

It is the Grateful Dead’s May 27, 1989, performance of “Althea” at the In Concert against AIDS benefit in California. And the video just released in the band’s “All the Years Live” series finds the musicians successfully rolling out a strong performance for an audience not made up exclusively of Dead Heads.

This is a band doing its job - five musicians contributing equally to the music while Jerry Garcia sings strongly and turns on the afterburners for the resolving guitar solo.

It might not explode in the way others do. But this “Althea” is a prime example of the Grateful Dead doing their best to infiltrate the straight world of music without stifling their inner outsider status.

rain wild chronicles thoughts (mostly negative ones)

warning for me being a hater - if you liked this series, I'm happy for you!!! feel free to click away from this criticism with the knowledge that it's okay to like and dislike different things.

that being said, this was by far my least favorite Hobb series. there are some things I really liked, but I feel overwhelmingly "meh" about this series. it feels like there's a lot of missed potential and it's a significant dip in quality from what I know Hobb can do.

I think this review is best formatted with a list of things I liked, and things I didn't.

things I liked:

I really enjoyed and related to aspects of Thymara's arc. her struggles with the model minority idea was super interesting, and her issues with sexuality hit home for me in a weird (but good) way.

the Rain Wilds :) they are so cool! tree cities yes please!!!

Malta in book 3. this deserves another post and I've already ranted about it on Discord, but I'm continually amazed by Hobb's skill in developing characters. we pick up with Malta after a significant time gap, and she is clearly different, but it's so clearly still her and she's been informed by everything that's happened to her and it's just amazing.

also the scene where she gives birth to Phron and kills the Chalcedean. good for her. it was extremely disturbing to me but also extremely badass

also her relationship with Reyn is very sweet

the Hest/Sedric flashbacks to the start of their relationship

learning more about the ancient Elderlings and their city was cool

things I disliked:

Malta in book 4. "but Eve you just talked about how much you love her" yes but she got fucking boring in book 4 ok. she did nothing.

this actually hits on a bigger issue with RWC to me, which is that none of the characters really had a character arc worthy of four books. most of them had a pretty simple thing (in terms of story) to overcome - ie Sedric and Alise realizing Hest was a horrible abuser and finding self-worth without him, Thymara embracing her sexuality and choosing a partner, etc - but once they did that, or if the story wasn't allowing them to make progress at that point, their arcs just kind of... stopped. which could have been workable, except Hobb was committed to giving characters POVs even if nothing interesting was happening with them.

this is my main frustration with Alise - it feels like her arc pretty much ends when she has sex with Leftrin. yeah there's the stuff about being a scholar and accepted into the Elderling community, but it's boring and not impactful to me and doesn't feel satisfying. but even when she's a very static character, she still has POVs, and they're repetitive and boring.

WHY HAS PARAGON BEEN ENTRUSTED WITH ANOTHER CHILD. WHAT THE FUCK. this better get addressed in F&tF or I riot. (no spoilers please)

WHY DID WE NOT GET ALTHEA AND BRASHEN'S KID'S NAME. i have been waiting for so long!! (again, no spoilers)

Selden's arc ends with him being dragon pilled again!! whyyyy. it could be interesting if it was showing the futility of trying to build a life without the dragons, and how he's destined to be a slave to them and that's tragic, but nope! he's just a happy minstrel again! yay /sarcasm

the dragon and Elderling plot in general kind of went nowhere... it was cool to see the Elderling development but the books ended without most of the dragons changing in any significant ways, and the new Elderling society really wasn't explored to the extent I was expecting.

THE WAR AGAINST CHALCED IS LIKE FOUR FUCKING PAGES LONG. it's one battle and the resolution isn't even on screen!!!!!! the narration of the dragons flying to Chalced is longer than the ENTIRE WAR WITH CHALCED. girl.

I could go on but I don't want to.

TLDR: I was really disappointed in RWC. I thought the characters were pretty shallow and boring and didn't deserve four books of POVs, the plot was... fine but not exciting, and the resolution was rushed and not impactful.

“Fuck no, you shouldn’t see the other one. He looked much better after he’d kicked my ass and therefore, we’ll scratch him from my story.” Skyler smiled bitterly. He could joke about it and laugh that bruise off, but his ego suffered more than his ribcage did. Would he learn anything from that and stop starting such unnecessary fights? Of course not. The lesson would be gone even before his bruises had a chance to heal.

My idea here is he wants to use your character and plant some device/steal something he needs, but doesn’t necessarily have to be this kind of plot.

He almost jumped at the sound of her voice. Sudden noises in the middle of the night were his least favorite – one could never prepare for that inevitable mini heart attack. With a quiet, bored sigh, Skyler turned around, smiling a little apologetically. “Sorry I woke you up. Everythin’s under control. I’m just lookin’ for-... Uh, never mind, go back to sleep.”

After his shift ended at three o'clock, Noah headed back home to get changed before hurrying over to The Bookshelf.

It had been a long shift at the lab and he’d already promised to help his boyfriend at his shop for the later half of the day. He’d learnt to restock things fast from working with Jasper on his home business, so he was speedily effective in making sure the shelves was always full.

The shop was going from strength to strength. Briony had called to confirm that his store was going to get a very well written review by Gretchen that was due to be published in the Campbell Chronicle.

Henry waved from the counter as Luke walked in, doing some of the rounds of businesses that Althea usually partook in. As her deputies, he and Becky had both made their presence known in town and making sure Althea wasn’t so overworked.

“Afternoon Luke!” Henry called.

“Hey Henry” Luke said as he grinned in welcome. “How’s it been today?”

Henry nodded, speaking modestly “It’s not been bad for business.”

Henry really has a handle of the shop, Luke thought as he looked around. The shop was clean, cosy and the shelves were fully stocked.

Oh look, a book about supernatural myths. How the heck did he find this?! That’s impressive!

In 1619, Althea Weyward was put on trial for the death of a local man and accused of witchcraft. But like her mother, she was a healer with a deep connection to nature. Women possessing powers that others cannot understand have always been deemed dangerous, but were Althea’s intentions sinister or meant to help another?

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. It was the perfect blend of mystical realism and female empowerment, with characters who embodied these traits so well. I felt the story fizzled out a little toward the end, but as a whole, the book was definitely worth reading. I look forward to reading more from Emilia Hart!
