I never thought I’d say this, but I’m in love with a demon. Harley Laroux did not disappoint with this book and I’m so glad there’s two more in this series!

At first Rae bugged the hell out of me because of her stupidity, but then I realized the girl was just trying to survive. As any human would. And at least Leon loved her brattiness. His punishments were… wow.

And the whole Leon giving Rae his metal scene… fucking. swoon!

Dear lord, I loved it.

I loved it all.

Now here are my rambling thoughts...

* I’m already team demon. I don’t like this pompous Kent guy. Or his children.

* Kent’s son Jeremiah is such a little bitch lol

* What the fuck is waking up that gives a DEMON chills?!

* Oohhhh. Rae found a grimoire of her own 😏

* Who the fuck is this security guard and what just happened..?

* Wait.. Leon is the security guard?! lol. Demon asshole. Okay, it’s fine then.

* “I don’t tell stories for free, doll.” // “Yeah? What’s your price?” // “You, on your knees, begging for my cock down your throat.”

* Goddamn. Leon’s bold. I fucking love it 😂

* Holy shit. The way he ate her out and then fucked her… yeah, she’s totally giving up that soul of hers.

* Aw fuck. Why did Everly steal the grimoire? If she didn’t “donate” it, then how did it end up in the library? And please don’t let her father know she has it.

* Aww. Poor Cheesecake. The Eld snatched the car up and Leon’s totally risking his life for Rae’s cat 😂

* Rae is starting to piss me off. Just listen to the demon!

* I knew they were gonna fuck, but goddamn that was… intense lol.

* After everything, this bitch STILL wants to ask the Hadleigh’s for help?! I fucking hope they sacrifice her now. She’s so stupid.

* Now you’re trying to bind him and command him to protect you? Rae, you’re fucking up. I hope Leon makes you pay.

* And punish her he did. Goddamn.

* Goddamn. Callum the Archdemon fucked up Leon 😂

* Awww. Everly gave him his sigil back.

* Oh my fucking god. Did you really go to the Hadleigh’s for a party? You’re so goddamn stupid, Rae.

* Of course Jeremiah is gross enough to roofie Rae. I knew this party was just a ploy to get their next sacrifice. Thank god for Zane and “Sam”. And now Leon is here. Yay!

* Fuck. Kent was waiting for them 🤦🏻‍♀️

* Leon pierced her nipples. Why was that so hot 🥵 😂

* Whoa. Kent’s dead? A little anticlimactic, no? But which psycho will have after Rae now? The God has a Kynes, a Hadleigh, and now It just needs a Lawson. Rae is so not in the clear.

* Fucking hate Jeremiah.

* Oh my god 😭 Leon saying goodbye before he takes on the Reaper. I’m not okay. Fuck this.

* Oh my god… no matter that she’s marked for the God, she still carved Leon’s name into her flesh and gave him her soul. HE’S ALIVE!!!

Lightlark is joyless, a husk beyond parody, a checklist of every Island of Blood and Bone and Glass and Hearts that has come out in the last five years, built and sold on tropes and aesthetic boards. This is a book written by an author who is not a writer. It would fit in on the dregs of an amateur writing site with eerie perfection.

But Lightlark is more than that. You see, Lightlark is… a TikTok book.

The best book I’ve read so far this year is Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar.

When poets write novels I always get very excited because they enter into their contract with words in a different way to other writers, with a certain level of distrust of language’s abilities, with an understanding of the disappointing paradox in metaphors, and with a playful abandon for convention.

This book is a great example of all of those things. It tore me open so many times and put me back together again, too. It’s got everything — family, identity, death, nationality, history, death, art, politics, death, love, war, did I mention death, and dreams where the dead speak to cartoon characters

posting this at the risk of sounding like a pretentious loser

you can learn a lot about a society from its reading choices, and lately, i'm concerned with bookstagram / booktok. there appears to be two dominant genres capturing readers' attention: fantasy and crime / murder mysteries.

fantasy readers are huge consumers. the amazon / barnes and noble wet dream, spending every last dollar on the newest release of six part series. but fantasy novels have always been a regular story in disguise. when you strip away the magic of todays fantasy what are we left with?

today's fantasy stories tend to revolve around taboo themes, especially explicit content. essentially, a form of literary pornography. it reminds me of the joke you used to hear guys say when they bought playboy magazines: "i read it for the articles.”

unlike this new stuff, the essence of series like lord of the rings, the chronicles of narnia, and harry potter lies beyond their fantastical settings. they all delve into the timeless battle between light and dark, and retells the age old narrative of good versus evil, while exploring the nuances of power and the conquest of internal darkness. in each case, magic serves as a narrative tool rather than the central focus.

without passing judgment on the morality, the question is: what does this trend say about our collective priorities in relationships and the themes we find most compelling what is wrong with us? the parallels for crime / murder mysteries are apparent. the fascination with crime, murder, and serial killers raises questions about societal interests and individual takeaways.

as opposed to the timeless and profound themes explored in classic literature, these contemporary genres seem to focus on more immediate and shallow aspects of human experience. i wish our literary interests extended beyond mere escapism and momentary entertainment.

a truly good book is timeless, addressing deeper aspects of society, morality, economics, sociology, mortality, and spirituality.

[Book Five Novellas]

Story: 4 out of 5 Smut: 1 out of 5

I forgot how much I loved these couples AND hockey romance.

These stories are supposed to tie up everyone’s stories from the Off-Campus series, but for me all it did was leave me wanting more! How dare Elle Kennedy leave each ”part” as a mini cliffhanger. Especially Hannah and Garrett’s story!

Each “part” made me laugh. A couple left me aggravated, but thankfully the issues were handled fairly quickly. I got so attached to these characters that I hated any drama. I just wanted my babies to be happy haha.

As was the case with the first four books, Elle Kennedy did a fabulous job here. This is one series I will never forget.

Now here are my rambling thoughts…

THE PACT

* Not Logan and Grace role playing at the bar. Holy shit haha.

* Aww. I forgot how much I loved Grace’s dad Tim. He’s such a sweetheart.

* Lmao. A creepy haunted doll? These idiots mail it to each other when they least expect it 😂

* Fuck this puck bunny. I just know this is going to cause issues 🤦🏻‍♀️

* Oh I’m so glad the article took a completely different turn 😂

* Lmao. Stuck on the side of the road during a blizzard? Fuck it out in hopes of keeping warm. That’s the obvious choice, duh.

* “A pact requires the agreement of both parties,” he argues. // “Not when my life is at stake.” I stick my tongue out. “Sorry, babe, but I’m eating your ass whether you like it or not.”

* Wait, what?! How are you gonna end part one like that?! We better get to find out if they eloped or not!!!

THE PROPOSAL

* Aww. Dean’s practicing his proposal on his best friend 😂

* They totally fucking eloped. Logan’s being secretive about that day!

* Oh my god.. Hannah’s queasy?! She’s pregnant!

* Oh no. So Allie doesn’t wanna get engaged right now? but Dean already has the ring!!!

* Logan and Grace did get married!!!! I knew they were the eloped part of this lol.

* And now Hannah’s barfing in the bathroom. Friends episode indeed 😂

* Wow. I’m totally Team Dean in this. My heart hurts for him.

* I’m so happy she saw the error of her ways. And Logan’s dick 😂 Her proposal was sweet.

* “Fuck. I wish I had the ring on me. But it’s at home.” // “Is it big?” // “Huge.” // “How huge?” // “Massive. Even your dad was impressed.” // “You showed your dick to her father?” — 😂😂

* Lmao there’s that creepy doll again. And of course she let the cat out of the bag. Now Dean knows Logan’s married too.

THE HONEYMOON

* Lmao. Oh no. Their flight would have the worst crotchety couple in front of them and then smoke filling the plane. Poor Sabrina and Tuck. All they wanna do is bang each other’s brains out and they ended up with the worst flight ever.

* Lmao. Dean’s such a dick. He would send them the creepy doll on their honeymoon.

* They threw the doll into the ocean. I’m gonna laugh if it winds up back with them somehow.

* “That was for the plane, wasn’t it?” // “I would never.” // “You almost let a man pee on me, Sabrina!” // “That’s how much I love you.” — I love them.

* Awww. Hannah confirmed her pregnancy. But she doesn’t know what she wants to do.

* A coconut knocked her tf out 😂 They’re having such bad luck on this trip.

* Lmfaoooo. The doll fucking returned. I can’t 💀

* And now Tuck got arrested 🤦🏻‍♀️

* Damn. They both got offered jobs in Manhattan. I think they should take them.

THE LEGACY

* Aww. All Garrett wanted was a good night. Now his dad is there handing out an award. Barf.

* Oohhhh. The Legacy is a show. And they want Garrett to do it with his dad. Ouch. I hope he does… and then outs Phil Graham as the abusive asshole he is.

* And now he’s spiraling. Fuck, Hannah is never gonna find a good time to tell him she’s pregnant.

* Oh no. She’s spotting. Please let her be okay. Or freak out enough to go to the hospital and this is where Garrett finds out.

* Goddamn. That interview was not going too well at all. And then Hannah tells Garrett she’s pregnant over voicemail. This day sucks already.

* I’m happy she’s giving him the silent treatment. And now that he’s freaking out because he saw the number she took for a realtor. It’s totally not what he thinks, but this is the kick in the ass he needs.

* Awww. They’re gonna have the baby 🥹

* He’s going to do the interview solo and tell the world what a piece of shit his dad is! Yesssss!

* Lmao. The creepy haunted doll now has a companion and the expecting couple were gifted them 😂 Sabrina and Tucker are such assholes.
